Reviews of Trefriw Woollen Mills Ltd
J. M.
We decided to pop in as the last part of our "Tour North Wales With American Mother" trip. Totally a great stop if you're interested in really nice textile and knitted products. The fact that it is a fully functional, water powered mill, where raw wool works it's way to amazing woven products is fascinating. The people working there were super friendly. We didn't have any snacks as it was late in the day, but we did go up and watch a mill in operation. That was amazing. You can feel the power of the machine in the floor and see the intricate mechanical parts working together to create beautiful textiles. Proper true craftsman working these machines. I got a great sweater for a great price. Remember people, though products for sale may seem expensive, things with the Trefriw label are very unique and handmade. I'd say totally worth it. Would definitely pop in again.

The answer to the question of where to go to find traditional woven goods in Wales. The site, itself, is beautiful, offering tours through the workshops. The workshops features everything from modern to wonderfully preserved and maintained classic looms and tools of the trade. I found it interesting. My mum, who is a weaver, herself, was absolutely absorbed by the processes.
The shop offers up many products, which are made on site, as well as items made from local textiles, crafters, and artisans. You can also buy the usual sort of tourist-tat here but, really, it's the traditional craft that deserves the attention.

Amazing Welsh blankets!!! Wide range of top quality products on offer. The lady on the sales counter was very helpful and the customer service was exceptional!Diolch yn fawr/many thanks.
A. V.
Its great to see a working mill. We were there at a time when they were using 2 looms, which was nice. Unfortunately, that meant we didn't see the spinning and other processing in action. It would be great to get a little more information on the processing and work involved.
To see all areas one needs to get up/down two flights of stairs.
The products in the shop were not to my taste but well crafted.
S. M.
Very friendly staff and lots of localy made wool products. We were a little late, but still got a quick walk around the machinery.

I’ve just received a beautiful blanket from Trefriw as a wedding gift from my sister. The craftsmanship is amazing and the quality is second to none. Highly recommend if you’re after a piece that will last for generations. I look forward to cosying up with it this winter.

I visited Trefriw Woollen Mills a few years ago as I absolutely love Welsh blankets. It was a lovely day trip and so nice to see that these traditions still exist.
Having bought Welsh blankets for every bed in my house, I recently bought one as a wedding present for my sister, to remind her of childhood holidays in Wales, and to keep as an heirloom for years to come. The staff are helpful and lovely to deal with, the blanket arrived this morning and we are all delighted with it. Thankyou!
T. B.
A good visit with plenty of goods to buy. Views can be had of the wool shed, the hydro power system and the weaving machinery in action. Very interesting.
A. D.
We wanted to show our daughter the mill workings but were initially disappointed that the weaver wasnt usually there on Mondays. However he arrived and showed us all the process. You could see from the raw wool to the finished products. Also the magnificent water driven turbines. Thank you all xx
The shop has a wide range of lovely things including products made at the mill. Seeing the work and process to make them makes you realise they are a bargain.
L. J.
Visited this shop after a long walk around Trefnant lake. Nice large shop, high quality woollens. Unfortunately it was late afternoon and the cafe wasn't open for refreshment!
D. H.
Ok, so the best thing is it's free to walk round. On some days there is machinery running and on others not. When I went nothing was running. Might be worth ringing up to see if they can tell you when some machines will be running if that is important to you. The turbine was interesting, but I went through the mill in about 15 minutes. The shop? It's a shop, you'll need to ask someone else about that. Toilets clean. The fairy falls are close by, you might consider doing both?
M. W.
Self guided tour is free. My kids were able try making a rag rug and weaving in a loom. There are a lot of signs explaining each part of the process. Great gift shop with all sorts of items for sale.
L. M.
This was a very interesting visit. We were there when the mill was working, so we went upstairs and were able to watch them operating the spinners and twisters. It had a wonderfully woolly smell and so many interesting things to look at.
L. P.
Nice place with full process shown. There were man who worked since 1969 and it was amazing talk, he said us a lit about machine a nd how it is working. Worth visit.
J. C.
Fascinating, free self guided tour. Really interesting to see the process, and the shop has beautiful products. Everyone was very friendly and helpful!
L.
Both my husband and I were fascinated by the woollen mill. We actually missed the beginning of the tour and jumped straight in. It was amazing to see the machinery working turning the wool into yarn and then woven into the fabric. It was awesome to see the weaver using the loom to produce the intricate fabric. Finally through the cafe into the shop where there are a large range of clothes and woven items. The fabric is expensive £65 meter but there's other things less expensive to buy. A GREAT place for crafters and those who enjoy watching machinery work. I don't think it's suitable for young children as the place can be noisy.
D. H.
Something for every one, very high quality products in both looks and the making. Interesting guide as to how the base material is made. Worth a visit. Trefiw itself is very interesting with plenty to offer in terms of walks and amenities.
J. P.
Loved it! Extremely friendly staff. Walking through the area where all the products are made is fascinating-particularly if you wear wool and can appreciate how much work goes into the process. Great product selection too.
M. W.
Lots of woollen products to see although not all local Plenty to see and if timed right the weaving can be viewed. Prices a bit on the high side as they usually are for hand made goods
T. B.
I bought a small blanket here, it's called a knee throw" which I'm extremely happy with.
C. L.
Fantastic shopping experience great crafting items and love the woolen made animals of sheep owls e.t.c well worth a visit and a walk around the tranquill village love it..👍
J. C.
Beautiful items on sale. Thank you!
C. F.
Lovely place to look round didn't except it to be as good as it was
m. L. P.
we really enjoyed the working part of this mill....with heaps of colored skeins and blankets in process - wonderful! They also have a nice big gift shop and a little tea room. A very authentic and good place to visit!
G. H.
Interesting place, unfortunately they weren't weaving whilst we were there
T. B.
Nice friendly atmosphere lots of things to inspire you well in my case buy.
C. R.
Perfect spot for a morning coffee and lunch. We stopped off before and then after a local walk down to the beach. Latte with soya for creamy and soft. Egg Mayo wrap with crisps and salad the perfect after walk nourishment! Lovely atmosphere and design layout with the outdoor seating and especially the sun seat!!!
R. C.
One of the most interesting places I've seen whilst on my North Wales Holiday.
E. J.
Visited here today lovely place, items for all ages. Great to be able the see the looms working making blankets very intresting. Staff very helpful and friendly. Also a spacious shop, floor all marked out well one way system so no problems social distsncing.
A. W.
Shop was interesting and the staff were very nice and friendly.
I. M.
It was very interesting to see how the weaving mills worked. The fabrics and patterns where beautiful
M. B.
Enjoyed my visit although food in cafe limited. Friendly helpful staff. Felt there should have been more Welsh products in shop, especially their own wool, but love what I bought (and will save up for a bedspread). Great to see traditions continue and mechanisation has replaced child labour - more about that would have interested granddaughter (7 years). Short walk to Fairy Falls - great for kids to let of steam! Thanks.
M. K.
The fabric they make here is superb quality with some interesting colours. Yes, it is expensive, but you get what you pay for. I was bought some tweed for Christmas and have made waistcoat, which I am very pleased with, that is lovely and soft.
D. M.
I had a great time here. I had a lovely chat with the lady in the cottage who was making a peg rug. Then a trip around the looms followed by the shop. Where there are some very nice products and of course I just had to buy some wonderful fabric for myself and a beautiful woven wrap for my daughters birthday.
C.
Products are of good quality but prices are exorbitant. Clothing products are dated and possibly needs to be updated for a new generation. People seem to be walking out without any purchases (unfortunately).
D. R.
Not much was happening when we visited in that not all staff were there. However, it was excellent to have explained to us the history of the process of wool manufacturing by expects who obviously loved the subject, and the work they do. Having seen the amount of work that is put into the items that are sold in the shop, makes understandable the higher price of the goods. We really considered it worth the visit.
A. K.
The mill was closed ,but we did have a,walk.round the beautiful.village , and to.look.at the falls
F. C.
This is a genuine hydro-powered mill carrying out all stages of wool processing which you can watch for yourself. The location is stunning in the wooded foothills of Snowdon. I loved the tweed, but the skirts made with it only came in large sizes which was really disappointing. The Welsh tapestry would have been nicer in more neutral colours, and we thought some of the garments needed updating to reflect current styles. It was great having a cafe on site, though we were served by someone who didn't seem quite up to the job. I still recommend a visit though!
B. E.
Fantastic little museum and free which is a rarety these days. The mill machines are still running and the history of the mill is very interesting, lovely shop too full of the things still produced by the mill, little coffee shop has snacks etc, not a lot accessble by wheelchair which is a shame.
S. C.
Views of weaving taking place are limited, but the traditional produce on display in the shop is of an outstanding quality.
n. h.
Beautiful traditional welsh wool products, all in a lovely setting. Friendly professional staff helped me pick a wonderful blanket. Reasonably priced for such quality, and for supporting one of the few remaining Welsh woollen mills. Highly recommended
C. W.
Only the shop open due to Covid, but still worth a visit. Stunning fabrics with history, and very friendly staff. The whole family enjoyed the visit - made even better by the fact that it's dog friendly!
S. K.
Fantastic place to visit. Very old machines very good maintein and usefully still. Amazing electric generator with Pelton turbine. Traveled two hours to visit Trefriw Woollen Mill and this was beautiful day. I definitely recommend it.
L. G.
Typical of a Welsh woollen craft mill and shop. Tweeds are woven in house and a very extensive range of both cloths and products are available in the shop, although (as might be expected) at the high end of the price range. The quality is excellent and the staff courteous, professional and highly obliging. I bought a tweed cap and they went to great lengths to get my design choice in my size.
T. B.
We really enjoyed looking at the lovely weaves. The colours and patterns of the fabrics we're beautiful. Also had a lovely piece of cake in the on site cafe. We will return later in the year when the looks are running.
E. L.
Not as accessible as i had hoped. Wheelchair access to toilet up a steep incline. Lots of lovely things to buy. Also would have liked a better more extensive choice in the cafe.
J. S.
Enjoyed our visit here really interesting walking around seeing the weaving processes in action, from the raw lamb's wool then to the wonderful selection of finished garments, rugs, throws and much more. Thanks to the friendly staff. Worth the visit 😄👍
m.
This was a very interesting tour. You walk through and see the process of how the wool is woven into large bolts of fabric on looms. You can also see it being carded and spun. There is a little shop to purchase woolen items made from their wool. I really enjoyed it.
T. M.
Return visit after 53 years. Recognised the pattern from my mum's coat that she bought then. Still have the small purse in the same green pattern. The tour was very interesting to see the machinery working
C. J.
Wonderful displays of wool weaving processes and its own hydro power system. Great shop with wide range of textiles made by this mill and cafe.
D. H. W.
The mills workshops and main loom and machinery were on display and fully working! great place for the public to see real time woollen mill in operation. The shop was full of goodies you can take home :)
H. S.
They show you how they knit a blanket and the process the wool goes through
n. b.
Really nice place with very helpful staff. The tour was really interesting, and the shop has a lot of very nice items for sale. Would definitely recommend.
R. G.
Bit pricey, gorgeous weave shop
F. C.
Have been round the woollen mill a few times, always enjoyed seeing the old workings throughout. The prices are a bit steep, but that is to be expected with the quality of product and the niche market
G. N.
Shop is extensive, at other locations the staff offered advice on the attraction, where to go what to see etc, alas this was not the case in the shop nor the two staff members in the coffee shop. Did not feel a friendly vibe
D. A. H.
Open all year round and shows the process of how woollen items are made. Worth visiting if interested. Worth going round the shop and cafe also available, but food is limited.
N.
Absolutely wonderful quality items. The shop has great clothes and gifts. But the woven bead spreads are beyond compare.
T. E. (.
Fascinating place, like going back in time! And some bargain blankets - nice traditional patterns. Bought sheepskin rug as well. Also B&B there
J. a. N. V. l.
Well worth a visit. Its like going back in time
V. B.
The mill was very interesting, and the rest of the mill was also good, the tea was hot the, and the CAKE is to die for. The carpark is very big as well, be careful crossing the road
H. A.
A beautiful shop, if you want to buy a gift from Wales this is the place, such a variety. Nice cafe plenty of choice, and friendly atmosphere.
E. M.
Interesting to watch the wool preparation and the looms. The craft studio was very hands on for the children. Tea room is self service and ok.
P. M.
Of course it's expensive, they are quality handmade woollen products of traditional design and vivid colours.
If you want cheap go online and get cheap.
G. D.
Excellant textile and craft / local produce outlet on the way too Bettys Y Coed . It is an articulate venue and you could just imagine locals producing similar good when there wasen ' t the industrial accessories which we have today .
D. H.
Couldn't believe his big this shop is. They very kindly let us bring the dog in too. Bought a few presents to take home.
j. t.
Able to tour around mill and watch cloth being woven at no cost. Cafe and large shop with wide range of clothing & gifts . Very friendly helpful staff.
S. D.
Very interesting but they only do demonstrations on a Wednesday and Thursday. I went on a Friday. Craft shop is very expensive
i. S.
If you're looking for something cheap you're in the wrong place but the quality is unquestionable. A cold wet January probably wasn't the best time to visit because there was little going on apart from the shop.
P. L.
Absolutely fascinating place to visit, with friendly staff who are happy to offer information and explanation about the woollen mill processes. Good selection of cakes in the cafe!
R. v. d. B.
Nice visit but the garments on offer are all very much aimed at elderly people. hardly anything modern to be found, unfortunately.
J. R. E.
Excellent overview of wool from sheep to blanket. Quality of the goods for sale in the shop were not the best so come for the tour and shop elsewhere.
P. C.
