Don't live local so if ever in York, gotta to visit Barnitts. It's just like an old fashioned country store that used to have every conceivable item hanging from hooks in the ceiling. Barnitts is the modern day equivalent, no hooks in ceiling but you can almost buy anything here from helpful knowledgeable staff, in a shop that seems to go on and on. Never visited and not bought something.

Having managed 4 independent high street stores (1 of them my own) over the last 25 years, I'm fully aware of just how much 'good customer service' can help build and maintain your regular customer base. We always try as much as possible to 'shop' and 'eat' independently when on a day out, today in York where we come regularly. I love this store , it's got everything, unique products and its independent. I've always been impressed with the DIY guys in Barnitts, they always seem knowledgeable and very helpful when asked anything. Today the wife wanted a new baking dish, I suggested we get one from Barnitts, she found one, said it was a bit 'expensive' but I said I'm paying I don't mind - I'd rather buy from here than say Wilkinsons. She also found a pan she liked, so we went to pay for them. The guy at the till (green hoodie) didn't once give us a 'please', 'thank you' , 'hello' or 'goodbye' . The sort of lack of poor manners and service you'd find in a chain type store from a youngster. Manners cost nothing and today I left feeling that 'shop independent' ethos took a bit of a knock.

I initially thought this place tiny but upon further investigation, there's an entire gardening department inside as well. Loads of stuff ranging from kitchen wear and utensils to repair DIY. Got myself a tool box and staff were pretty helpful too.

This shop supposedly stocks everything for the home & DIY person - too many products to list but there are individual sections with specific categories e.g. plumbing, general diy, lighting, electrical, painting, china, kitchen & dining necessities, bathroom fittings & furniture. I was looking for some wallpaper border but this section seemed to be undergoing a make over so I was disappointed. There are only a few places selling wallpaper in York & Barnitts used to be one of the best.

Honestly, this is the best shop in the entire world for do it yourself, lighting, glassware, kitchenware actually for absolutely anything you need about the house. It is quite my favourite shop in York. Huge. Masses of stock. It really is like a wonderland. Just go and see what I mean!!

I struggled to find someone to help as no-one was in any kind of uniform, so waited in a long queue for help, another person has a question and was snapped. They didn't have in any of what I needed and couldn't be bothered to offed to order in for me, just walked off, I did need to ask about something else but if they weren't interested I am happy to take my business somewhere else.

This store is a veritable Aladdin's Cave - a real old-fashioned hardware store - and my first impressions were favourable. The staff members I did encounter were helpful, but, this being Yorkshire, a little on the gruff side. However, on my most recent visit, I really wanted to buy a decent frying pan, and would have welcomed some assistance. The layout of the store doesn't make it that easy for staff to see customers who are obviously wanting help or advice. But I walked around for 5 or 10 minutes and was never approached or acknowledged. I was a little disappointed, but I'll give you another go. It's lovely to have a "proper", independent retailer so close to where I live, and I'd like to be able to support it if I can.

Pretty much everything you need in a hardware store. Staff are really helpful and well informed IN THEIR OWN DEPARTMENT. If you are after something from another dept you may get pointed to it if you are lucky. Competitive pricing on everything from bird food to kettles. Only downside is lack of parking however they offer a free local delivery service. It's my first point of call for most household items.

Don't be fooled by the small entrances, this shop is vast. It has everything from furniture to kitchen accessories and a myriad of different things in between. Although, if you know what you want, a quick shop is possible this shop has so much that leave yourself plenty of time to browse. Staff have always been helpful and prices seem reasonable. What a fantastic place it sells EVERYTHING. More seriously great DIY section and an extensive lighting section with a very helpful staff member. Worth a visit just to see what they stock. I love this shop! The shop is a labyrinth, made by joining six or so individual shops into one. Barnitts is great! Even someone who works at one of their competitors told me "you can buy anything at Barnitts!". They were nearly right! The shop itself is a fun maze to work your way around, with departments going off in all directions. If you have only been once then you won't have seen everything, no matter how hard you tried.! Prices are not the best but the amount of choice can't be found anywhere else in York. A friend of mine whose job is to find things in the shops for people always starts in Barnitts.

There's a saying in York it goes "...... have you tried Barnitts?" it's sometimes rephrased "... I bet Barnitts has it... " answered with "good shout" there are other phrasings. Long story Short, you need something chances are Barnitts have it and at a decent price. They are always expanding their Range and Shop for that matter. So remember you need Screws for a shelf, A tape measure, tins of paint, door handles, fork handles, O's for the Gate, Ho or a rake, work wear, a new cutlery set, a new pan set, electricals, pet food, pet toys, lighting, furniture...................... ....... - One eternity later-........ .......... Beds, wardrobe or bird food for garden birds, you'll find it here. You'll even find the kitchen sink.
