Reviews of 78 Derngate
E. W.
A lot of standing up with a guided tour, but very interesting.
More exhibits coming later in the year. Will go back without a guided tour so I can sit when my energy runs out. Rarely more than 1 chair to sit on, and sometimes none.
A view of the garden from the house. Currently locked as building work is going on
A. E.
This is a wonderful little gem of a building. Tucked away in an easily accessible corner of Northampton, close to a good source of parking, it makes for a smashing few hours of a visit. This is a fine example of a domestic Art Deco style designed by a master, but is also altogether a one off by its author. I strongly recommend the afternoon tea. It really is the best to be found in Northampton and it’s wider environs and the staff are charming and very helpful.
C. R.
We have lived here for many years and always wanted to visit. It was lovely, well worth the wait. Very interesting! I've always loved this style of architecture. Sadly we hadn't booked for the restaurant so we couldn't have a drink there.
E. A.
Stunning art deco, lovely house and smashing little museum and gallery. Well worth a visit.

78 Derngate is a Grade II listed Georgian house in the Cultural Quarter of Northampton, England, originally built in 1815. Its interior was extensively remodelled in 1916 and 1917 by the architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh for businessman Wenman Joseph Bassett-Lowke as his first marital home, given to him by his father.
Wenman Bassett-Lowke was the prosperous model-making business and was one of Mackinosh's most demanding patrons.
This is Mackintosh's only English house interior. It was a self guided tour.
Great plsce to visit if you like Macintosh's work.
L. P.
Amazing and unique house tour. Must- see for any Charles Rennie Mackintosh admirers. Our tour was really enhanced by the guide who brought the house to life. The dining room next door is also well worth a visit
C. W.
Wonderful way to spend a few hours and a real highlight of our trip to Northampton. The building tour was excellent and great value for money. We then had afternoon tea which was sldo excellent and great value. A real gem.
M. C.
Brilliant small museum packed with history. Extension going on so couldn't go into the garden. Did not spoil it in anyway, volunteers very friendly and snall cafe to get a coffee.
J. B.
Fabulous place to visit. We had a guided tour with an excellent and very knowledgeable gentleman.
The rooms were stunning. Well worth a visit
M. J.
An absolutely fantastic celebration of Mackintosh and Bassett-Lowke. Rob gave us a brilliant tour which was full of interesting information. We'll be back for afternoon tea next door ☺️
A. S.
If you enjoy Art Deco this house is not to be missed. The inside is not at all what you expect. It is Charles Rennie MacIntosh’s commission outside of Scotland. Free tours. The entrance ticket is good for one year.
G. J.
Really excellent museum depicting the ideas and art of very gifted man and run by very helpful and friendly people in all areas inciuding the nice little restaurant with very tasty homemade cakes, in particular the, Lemon drizzle.Only a short walk from Hazelwood road car park. I like the idea of slip on overshoes to protect the carpets and flooring.
S. C.
A rare survival, and a delight to see Mackintosh's work in such a domestic setting. It might have been the architect's closing chapter, but it presaged ideas of modernity in design which we're still assimilating.
K. B.
Had a great trip to 78 Derngate for Mother's Day. Our guide was very knowledgeable and even asked our opinions of the decor/design. Felt comfortable to ask questions
A. M.
As you may know Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a visionary architect and interior designer. Even though living in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, he influenced Art Nouveau and, in my opinion, was a precursor to Art Deco decades before it became the norm.
The museum has been extended and rearranged since the last time I visited nearly 10 years ago. The basement kitchen has been filled out with period furniture and the garden has been extended. It is an interesting set up especially when you find out that he never visited the place. His genius is less on display here than at the Glasgow Art School (before it burnt down - twice :-(
Well worth a visit and if visiting at the weekend then book a table in advance at the restaurant as it is very small. As we visited mid-week, it was very quiet and we were able to split our time with 2 visits to the restaurant - once for a light lunch which was very tasty and the second time for a cream tea right at the end. There was a large variety of teas to choose from and the scones are big enough to fill you up!
E. K.
Excellent CRM designs to see. Small museum, shop and dinning room. A few original pieces of Heal's furniture and early electrical kitchen equipment.
D. H.
A great visit. If you are a fan of art deco this place is a must. Friendly staff. Just ashame the cafe was shut on Monday.
A. F.
Great experience for the design and architecture lovers. Lovely afternoon tea.
C. B.
I have been several times as it well worth taking friends and visitors. Each time there is something different going on, in the house and the art display rooms for local artists. They are doing renovations and extensions at the moment so it was a little disorienting, but the volunteer guide (well worth booking - you can go round again on your own if you wish) and staff were very helpful getting us where we wanted. I look forward to seeing the end result. And with the ticket allowing you in again, for free, during the year why not?🙂
The cafe/restaurant is also well with a visit. This time we were in the little coffee room, cosy and with really helpful staff. Food (and coffee) was delicious. (I had the Eggs Royale with smoked salmon)
H. N.
Quite amazing to find out what is hiding behind this unassuming house. We had a great tour and the opportunity to ask lots of questions.
A. F.
We all had a fantastic visit to this fascinating historic gem from my daughter to my father in our party of 6. Interesting history about the building, the family who owned it and of course the Scottish designer Rennie Macintosh. Anyone who likes an interesting afternoon out would love it here including those interested in interiors, art and design. Lovely staff and very well organised with social distancing. Nice gift shop and a gorgeous cafe too with traditional afternoon tea cake stands!
S. F.
Super interesting museum! Can definitely recommend a visit. I had a lovely guy called Peter who did my tour and who was very knowledgeable!
S. H.
A wonderful and interesting museum. The rooms are so atmospheric and the place is a must see for fans of Rennie Mackintosh. Small restaurant serves a good variety of food.
M. L.
Interesting interior, well kept and renovated. Colorful and at places purely black/white. Well worth the visit.
P. S.
As the only house in England to have been designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, it is a charming example of his creative flair. Small and beautifully formed, I found it a delight to visit.
T. w.
The only house in England to be designed by Rennie Mackintosh.well worth a visit.
C. B.
A jewel of a place to visit in Northampton, a town of many surprises. From the outside you wonder what all the fuss is about but go one, open the door and enter a design and architectural delight. You will receive a warm welcome and have the opportunity to book onto a guided tour which is thoroughly recommended. Learn about the Basset-Lowkes and their connection with Charles Renney-Mackintosh whose last commission was the refit of 78 Derngate. If you enjoy an English afternoon tea on fabulous bone china then stop a while and enjoy and drink in the history and ambience of a quirky but classy masterpiece.
J. R.
Well organised, dedicated staff, very welcoming, a treat.
M. H.
Brilliant little museum, and fine friendly cafe.
C. W.
Really enjoyed it here. Fantastic guide who was very knowledgeable. We also had afternoon tea which was amazing. Even the dairy free option for my daughter
R. F.
A very well informed guide and a spectacular house with a lot of CR Mackintosh designs which you see in their original setting.
A man ahead of his time, the designs and features in the house are timeless. Good design stays fresh.
L. L.
Been here twice now. Unique house designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. So interesting and beautiful design. Had lovely afternoon tea in the cafe with my Mum on Mother's Day too. Highly recommended as a treat. Booking is a must x
H. D.
Genius architecture even if decorations not to my taste. A gem worth visiting. Visionary, ahead of it's time yet a cosy home. Inspirational over a century later.
R. R.
Amazing designs - only house outside Scotland designed by Charles Rennie Macintosh. Not everything works but well worth a look. A well spent couple of hours
P. C.
Best afternoon tea in the area! Even better to visit the house as well. So interesting and Mackintosh did it all by post - he never actually visited the house so it shows his brilliance - loved the whole experience so much been back a number of times!
s. b.
Home of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, you can take a tour of this place. We plan to do this next time . You can also buy different bits and pieces relating to his designs.
We had lunch in the restaurant which was made fresh and served by lovely staff. The tables all had white linen on and the tea was served in quirky teapots and cups really lovely.
This historic place is well worth a visit.
E. A.
Nice little museum a bit expensive to enter but you get to see some interesting interior design exhibits
A. L. S. R.
This is a perfect example of a house decorated in the Mackenzie style. Well kept, well explained. Excellent little restaurant.
M. B.
Really interesting to look round the house, good gift shop reasonably priced. Don't miss the afternoon tea very generous.
J. M.
Fabulous! Loved Mackintosh's work for a long, long time. Having seen so much in and around Glasgow, it was great to see another house interior by the inspirational man. The free tour was very personal and interesting, getting an insight into details you would otherwise miss. I also learnt a lot about the man who commissioned the work, which was also very interesting.
The artwork in the galleries wasn't to my liking - I would have preferred to have more about Mackintosh's other designs but a sandwich and cup of tea in the restaurant finished the experience just nicely.
L. B.
Fantastic place. I'm a huge fan of rennie macintosh but my hubby is a history fan and there was loads for us both. Very lovely and knowledgeable staff take you round and show the house and give you it's history then you can book to have lunch or a delicious afternoon tea to end. We both had a great time and I'm planning to go back next time I'm in the area
C. d. H.
It's always a delight to go and visit 78 Derngate, either the house (each time you find out something new) or the exhibition in the gallery. The gallery exhibitions usually have some real gems and surprises. And if you're a 'Friend', you get a discount on gallery purchases too. Definitely worth a visit, enjoy, Christiaan 🕊️🌳👍🙂👌
M. P.
Amazing Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed house is the only one in England. Fantastically restored with modern adjoining facilities and informative exhibition, an art gallery with temporary exhibitions, a cafe and lots of CRM-inspired merchandise in the gift shop. Friendly helpful staff. Small but still well worth a visit.
K. W.
An incredible house, well worth a visit.....and your ticket allows you to return as often as you like. The staff are lovely and the tour is a must. Did not manage to try the cafe but will next time.
G. B.
Very unlikely place to find in the corner of Northampton, but a essential visit if you're a fan of interior design, social history, people who made enormous wealth through selling model toys, or Northampton. Loses a star as restaurant was booked out when I visited so had to schlep off downtime for some coffee, but the house is fantastic.
t. c.
Interesting to see the designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, including a font! The museum has some other things and is generally ok. The tour was interesting. Cafe had no seats left but they accommodated us outside in the garden which felt like the extra mile.
S. H.
This building is unique to Northampton and also in an unexpected location. The tour guides are very informative and the house itself is also very interesting architecturally. The cafe is also exceptional.
M. P.
Great place to visit and staff very helpful and friendly. From a wheelchair user's point of view I found it quite good; you can see they have really tried with what they have done. They do need a new portable ramp as the one they have isn't great. They have a lift to most floors and an accessible toilet.
D.
Good modern museum attached to original fully restored only Rennie Mackintosh designed building outside of Scotland. Was amazing to see the original house interiors and then read history in attached modern interior museum.
Tea room is popular with coach parties and apparently does impressive traditional British Afternoon Tea. There is also a gift shop with a range of Rennie Mackintosh and Art Deco items including some exclusive pieces.
Standard entry cost as of Spring 2018 is £7.80.
D. R.
A must-see for Charles Rennie Mackintosh fans. 78 Derngate is the only CRM design commission outside of Scotland. It's a fascinating story of the ideas of two great men competing for supremacy of design details in a small Georgian terraced house. The museum/gallery and cafe are cleverly shoe-horned into the 3 adjoining houses. Free guided tours and a gift shop complete the experience.
D. T.
A special place & well worth a visit. Quite an unusual museum as it's dedicated to the Art Deco period. After your tour here, take a walk up the road to veiw the Guild Hall, it's amazing.
C. S.
Loved this place. Most of furniture is original. Good to have a guided tour as the guide was very knowledgeable. Worth a visit. Nice cup of tea there too server up in bone china
C. E.
Spectacular house on a small scale great place to visit
I. A.
A great little museum for anyone interested in Charles Rennie Mackintosh or Basset Lowke. Our guide was very knowledgeable and personable. The restaurant serves lovely food (I can recommend the mushroom tortellini).
C. L.
Absolutely brilliant! John the guide was knowledgable and spoke clearly with passion for his subject The house has been incredibly restored and the entrance fee of £8 very fair due to voluntary staffing.
D. R.
Fab place to get a true feel of what Macintosh could achieve as a designer, hard to believe it was so long ago. Due to so much reference available this is a true replication and quite fascinating ! Coffee shop great too
S. A.
A nice place to do if you visit Northampton. The guide gegen all the information about the house and the owners. At the end a nice gift shop. If you aren't interested a lot on the architecture and history of the city don't go.
Y. M.
Lovely restaurant serving great food and wonderful afternoon tea, wonderful atmosphere. The staff go out of their way to be helpful and friendly, also acknowledge birthdays, which is a lovely touch.
F.
We visited 7 heritage type properties in England this holiday, belonging to different organisations, most of them National Trust with lots of money and resources and yet this was one of the best, partly because of what it is, particularly because of our really good guide, John who brought the stories alive, the helpful staff and the tearoom. If you're going up or down the motorway, do stop here!
K. S.
Save the journey to Scotland and see a Macintosh finished house. Very 20's style but done in 1916. Very good exhibition about the owner as well.
G. P.
Oddly fascinating, for a man who made exquisitely detailed models, it was strange that he choose a minimalist geometric decor in his house. Some rooms feel modern even with the period pieces.
M. D.
Fascinating place with a very informative tour. Quality items in the shop and beautiful high tea in the cafe. Lovely day out
E. C.
Really interesting. Arrange for a guide. It is much more interesting.
M. C.
A really interesting place to visit. Take the free tour as the guides are really good. It's a unique house with fascinating decorations etc.
J. W.
The only surviving Rennie Macintosh design in England, if you like design - especially the period - well worth a visit. Also houses a fair collection of model trains and ships from the 20s and 30s.
