Reviews of National Liberal Club
K. H.
Great venue for events or just for dinner. As is a membership club it's quite hard to get in but try your best so you can enjoy this experience. The terrace has an amazing view to London's Eye, one of biggest attractions of London. The Christmas tree is huge this year and so cute. I was attending a party so had this great chance to taste some great wines and cocktails. Hope to get back one day and try the restaurant menu as well.

What an amazing membership club with such ambience and grandeur. I’m told Churchhill spent a lot of time in here.
I had a meeting here during January 2022 when Covid restrictions were still in place. I’ve been told they have fabulous New Year’s Eve parties where you can look out from the terrace over the Thames to the London Eye and see amazing fireworks.
It was completed in 1887 and has a dining room, a bar, function rooms, a billiards room, a library and an outdoor riverside terrace. It is located inside the Horseguards Hotel at Whitehall Place, close to the Houses of Parliament, the Thames Embankment and Trafalgar Square.
I enjoyed a lovely glass of Cabernet with business associates.

This review is for the food shown in the photo.
I ordered the jackfruit salad, which was on the "bar snack" menu. Not only was it really filing but it was also one of the best salads I've ever had! Highly recommended. I would come here just got the salad if I was a member.
M. U.
We had a fantastic event at the venue, Samira Mughal SMglobal fashion catwalk.

I have been a member for many years and always will be - the best Club in London! An oasis of peace. The river terrace with mesmerising views is the jewel in the crown - no other private members’ club has this. I have also had the pleasure of visiting many of its Reciprocal clubs in London and worldwide. My family and I love it and I also work from here when I can.
B. W.
A splendid building with stunning high Victorian interiors hardly altered since it was built in 1882. Originally a political club, it is now a social, very exclusive, non-commercial private members’ club but a number of members are Liberal Democrats.
As it is described by the Traditional Gentlemen's Clubs of London website it has "Probably the most stunning interior of all the traditional Gentlemen’s clubs in London – but visitors are usually duly impressed long before walking through the front door. Not only does the club have the most impressive address of all London clubs – 1 Whitehall Place – but the building itself, design by Alfred Waterhouse (who also designed the Natural History Museum), stands like a royal palace just off the Embankment.
Overlooking the Thames and the London Eye, the lucky members of the National Liberal Club not only are able to enjoy their summer drinks on one of London’s best terraces, but also have the best view in the city of the New Year’s fireworks"
I was fascinated by the full length, almost life sized portrait of a young Winston Churchill and the wonderful use of some beautiful marble especially on the awesome staircase staircase leading to the first floor. The height of the ceilings throughout are amazingly high and I was very intrigued by the "sit-upon" weighing machine with leather seat outside the gentlemen's lavatories.
To take a walk back in time here is a total delight.

I'm very happy to be a member of this wonderful club. It's traditional grandeur combined with the friendly Liberal ethos makes it a brilliant place to spend time. I come for meetings as well as for socialising. The fees are not bad for a central London club, and the hospitality pricing is quite reasonable as well.
K. L.
The place is magical. Although it boils with bombasticity. I've met there very inspiring people.
C. C.
Enjoyed a wonderful dinner in relaxed private dining, following a sparkling wine reception.
P. B.
Went there for dinner last tonight. Excellent food. After we went onto the terrace for drinks. The terrace has good views of the river Thames and the London Eye. All in all a very good evening. We had a John Dory fillet starter, Venison Haunch Steak for the main course, Raspberry Brulee desert followed by Scotch Egg and then coffee and mints.
R.
A club with diversity and progression.

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at this beautiful club. The service, food, building and overall atmosphere were exceptional.
R. H.
Beautiful space, welcoming staff, modest prices: join!
k. j.
Beautiful interior, tasty food - I've had a great time there.

Fantastic old members club in London. Grand building, beautiful terrace, and smoking room.
Some of the basement areas need a bit of a revamp with really old tiles.
S. C.
I was invited by a friend of mine who is a member. The food was excellent and the service impeccable. Highly recommended
S. A.
What a place. Loved the staircase. Fantastic collection of old parliamentary books to boot.
R. H.
I went there 13/07 as a guest of my brother, a member. Built in the late 19th century, a real trip back in time. The interior, unsurprisingly, well-kept, quite fascinating, comfortable. A gin and tonic on the terrace seemed quite appropriate … I know it’s a cliché, but really an oasis of tranquillity.
F. v. A.
Beautiful building, and great events space. I'll be back!
B. C.
Beautiful private club, great place for private meeting in Westminster
R. W.
Very friendly and welcoming- steeped in history. Well worth going
J. S.
My favourite Private Members Club. Find someone whose a member and get yourself invited. Or apply to join yourself.
A. K.
Welcoming, stunning building and interior. A true port in the storm that is London.
J. A.
Incredible building. Like going back in time in the centre of London. Amazing food.
F. W.
Pleasant atmosphere

One of my favourite places to go in London - both to eat and to relax
d. r.
Very impressive and great value food and drink
K. B.
An amazing facility in the heart of London. Entry is members only so ask for an introduction!
R. C. T.
Amazing place🤩 and great food😋

National Liberal Club is one of the oldest in the town and is twinned with a number of respectful venues around the globe. Expect the best of the imperial times. Very spacious and richly decorated rooms. Even as the word "rooms" should be replaced and we better refer to them as halls. With plenty of lights and sitting spaces the club offers unparalleled atmosphere in the Central Westminster. Taking the grand stairs and exploring the historic portraits all the way to the library is a nice stroll and is highly advised. Do not expect fancy food yet focus on very sophisticated clientele and enjoy your conversations and omnipresent historic features this building has indeed. Mind, this is a private membership enterprise by special invitations only.

Clean Friendly and Attentive staff.Enjoyrd my visit
M. &. F. B.
Had an event there, and the place is wonderful, with a huge history. A very high level service.
P. T.
Went to the Savage Club. They are being asked to leave due to the fact that they have no female members.
S. T.
Private members club taking political and non political members. Stunning marble staircase and smoking room. Wonderful bar and delicious good value restaurant food. View from the terrace of the Thames, Embankment and the London Eye. Insider tip this is a great place to see the New Years Eve fireworks without the jostle of a public ticket. Have to be a member though.
M. C.
I'm a member, so obviously I like it or I wouldn't be a member. However, a very relaxing members club in a lovely location.
B. F.
It feels wrong to rate a private members' club, but here I go. Magnificent building, restored after wartime damage. Spectacular reading room and dining room. Very good service and better-than-normal club food. Always quite busy and with good reason given the super atmosphere and convenient location near Trafalgar Square, Westminster etc.
S. G.
Fantastic building, decor and ambience. Great staff. Lovely food. A very enjoyable lunch/afternoon. Thoroughly recommended but you can't just walk in (as far as I'm aware), you need a member to sign you in.
F. W.
A special music evening.great building
I. P.
A very good lunch enjoyed in an excellently appointed establishment.
L. A.
A dear friend invited us to this members only club and showed us around the art Nouveau interior. Astonishing and great fun. If ever the club offer open house to general public certainly with at least one visit. Full of history narrative and almost baroque decoration. DELIGHTFUL.
F. L.
Have only attended an event there, so I cannot comment on the overall facilities. The venue was amazing both for is historic value and is exclusivity. The decor is impeccable and the staff is extremely polite and helpful. The food service was not improve and the bar area next to the dining area was not as fancy as the club rooms.
N. S.
Great dinner fabulous surroundings. Went to a society dinner, food was classic British, beef and mushroom pie followed by parking and custard. Tasty and a trip down memory lane. Wines were good and the company and surroundings excellent.
M. R.
Attentive, welcoming staff, first rate club food, like school dinners with a budget. Beautiful views over the Thames and very conveniently placed. Aside from the past glories on the walls and statues it doesn't make a fuss about politics.
D. I.
Actually almost 5 star deeper inside. A bit dated as you enter, then you discover how spacious it is. More airy and far better views across Thames than Pall Mall clubs. More inclusive, too.
T. W.
Amazing decor from a renowned architect of the 19th Century in a building with the feeling of an Italian palazzo. There is an extensive library spread across many of the rooms. In addition to the normal, larger capacity spaces available for dining or chatting with friends, there are many smaller but atmospheric rooms perfect for small groups, either meeting or dining together.
P. Y.
Majestic but not gaudy Victorian decor including scultures, portrait paints (e.g. Churchill & Lloyd George) High ceilings, chandeliers, grand red carpeted spiraling staircase, bar and dining restaurant with good food at very reasonable prices for location. In good weather you can enjoy views of the Thames on a long wide balcony
R. K.
Fabulous building, lovely staff, a bit of history. Wonderful location, great resturant but you do have to be a member or guest. Get there if you can!
A. O.
One of the old establishment meeting and events venues in central London. The place was buzzing on the day I attended because a General Election was announced the previous day. Men have to wear a jacket and ladies decently attired.
M. W.
In a historic part of London, beautiful looking building outside, inside majestic stair case, high ceilings and wonderful decor. Attended a meeting and found everyone friendly and impeccable service
s. r.
One of the finest Clubs in London. Beautiful surrounds and steeped in history.
The Club itself is a haven for those needing to step away from the hum drum of life and enjoy comforts of tranquillity, elegance and nourishment of the body and soul!
L. P. V.
A step back in time.A delightful and grand building with terrace and garden overlooking the Thames. However it can appear stuffy and old fashioned alternative this impression is balanced by friendly and attentive staff.
A. M.
It is quite traditional English place, the dress code is formal and it is fine for dinner reception meeting after a conference or workshop with dignitaries and high level classy ladies and gentlemen...
c. s.
Was one of the largest Gentleman's Clubs in the UK - reduced in size now a large part of the building is owned by an Hotel. Full of historic connections with senior political figures. Around 1500 members paying £785/yr (2017 figures), around 10% women. Very reasonable by Central London standards.
L. H.
For a club of this standing you’d expect it to be clean!
Yes the club is many many years old, but that’s no excuse to to dust cobwebs, vacuum carpets etc.
As a positive, staff are friendly and helpful and drinks are cheap.
A. B.
The most amazing place I’ve ever been! Great dinner, amazing location. I felt I was in one of Sherlock Holmes venues. Back in the ‘800.
M. M.
Very lovely inside. Love it
B. W.
Amazing interior, one of the best terraces in the area. Minus point for the food, which is more in the style of children's menus 🙄
S. L.
I love it here. As an out of town visitor from New Zealand this is a very special place to dine and is the high point of my London trip with my dear friends.
D. M.
I met a very dear and hospitable friend, Dr Saras Karna, at the club. We had tea, sandwiches and fruit cake on the terrace, all delicious.
G. R.
Steeped in history, this rather magnificent building has the interesting address of 1 Whitehall, London!
No pictures but a memorable evening!
A. M.
Very, very old school, as you'd expect. For a cooking style that's about 50 years out of date, the food was surprisingly nice. Decent house claret, too.
C. C.
I enjoyed an evening dinner in very good company. The food and service was of exceptional quality, accompanied by good wines
T. P.
Outstanding venue for my sons wedding. Beautiful and historic with great views of the Thames and Southbank.
