The Tea & Jam Collective provides a real service to hobbyist musicians of all stripes, even more so in this time of social distancing. It’s a place to do parallel practicing, discuss all things musical, and enjoy each other’s solo performances. We get together online via Zoom once or twice a week for about 2-1/2 hours. We start with a group chat and some stretching and breathing exercises. Then we mute our mics, leaving our cameras on, and work individually for about an hour on whatever pieces of music we want to practice. Then we turn our mics on and chat for 30 minutes, followed by another period of (muted) individual practice, finishing with a final group chat. Each month, several of us volunteer to video ourselves (offline) performing a solo piece. We submit these videos to Kat, our moderator/facilitator/host, who puts them together into a single performance video. Once a month, we meet on Zoom to watch these videos together.
When I described Tea & Jam to my bass clarinet teacher, a professional musician, she said the Tea & Jam concept put her in mind of an online analogue to the practice rooms and associated common spaces of a music school: Students go into their own practice rooms to work individually on their own material, then gather in common spaces to talk shop. Periodically, they listen to each other perform.
It’s all very sociable, and it encourages us to practice our music regularly, alone yet together. Finally, it gives us a chance to perform for each other. And all from the comforts of our own homes, across cities, countries, and continents. Highly recommended!

Kat is a patient and enthusiastic clarinet teacher and was enormously helpful to me in my beginner's attempts to play the instrument. Unfortunately I've had to put my lessons on hold for the present due to other commitments, but I'll definitely be back for more lessons in the future. Highly recommended!

I don't play any instruments, but the Showcases are so much fun - great way to start the weekend xoxo

Great opportunity to explore an instrument and be creative, without being judged by anyone else.
