My first place of work.Walked in from war torn Belfast as an 18 year old Executive Officer (EO) on 17 November 1969. Then it was the HQ of the purchasing division of the brand new Post Office corporation, but still with a very GPO culture. A great place to work with a number of mid-ranking women, up to SEO, who had joined during the War to replace the men at the front. Previously the building had been the HQ of the National Telephone Company, which was rolled into the GPO to form its telephone business. An early form of nationalisation that pre-dates the rise of Labour. More recently it was for a time a Mercury Communications building, when that company was the first competitor of the new British Telecom (itself split off from the Post Office corp.). Very apt. Anyhow, happy memories of a grand Victorian building.
