I was stuck on the A1 with a puncture and no spare tire. Phoned a tire company who said said yes they had the tire but didn’t have enough staff to come help me. Phoned a breakdown company.. too busy.. AA I’m not a member but if I spent 100pounds and half an hour on the phone they would send someone about 90 minutes after that. Then I tried D.A.Thorburn Motors. Thank the Lord ! Julie who answered the phone couldn’t have been more helpful or empathetic -fully understanding my stress at being stuck on a busy road with a deadline to reach Newcastle. Within 10 minutes, a breakdown truck was there. Colin the driver - again very sympathetic and efficient. He got the car loaded and then stopped to take photos of the open drain in the road, and put cones around it, while Julie reported the danger to the Bear Roads people. I was back on the road in less than an hour, having had the pleasure of meeting these wonderful people and having a coffee in the lovely little village. AND the breakdown recovery, the new tire, and the fitting and time cost £142 ! Unbelievable. It they weren’t so far from my home town they would be my new go to garage. Wonderful service, lovely people, great price. Thank you Julie and Colin.

They are mindful of the stress that drivers experience in such incidents and readily arranged dog friendly accomodation for us, and a hire vehicle to return home. " A big thank you to Alan Thorburn and his 24 hour Breakdown & Recovery team in Cockburnspath. If you are in need of a breakdown and recovery service, you are in good hands if Alan is involved. We were on holiday in Scotland and on the way back to the Hull-Rotterdam ferry, our car broke down on the A1 just before Dunbar and we could not safely drive any further. After a day of phoning and waiting on the advice from my insurance in the Netherlands, Alan took charge of the situation. First, he arranged an excellent hotel in Dunbar for us and then our car was taken to his garage. The next day, after more exhausting discussions with my insurance company (and with only five hours to go!) it was decided that Thorburn would take us and our car to the ferry terminal in Hull . (nearly 300 miles). On arrival, they arranged with P&O for our car to go on the freight deck and as well as a cabin for us on a nearly fully booked crossing to Rotterdam. The next morning at 9am we were in the Netherlands and we could arrange for the car to be taken to my local garage. In conclusion, Alan’s expertise and professionalism resulted in the correct decisions being made, he cared for our car and its passengers; an excellent service throughout." Henk & Renée, Rotterdam

I broke down 53 miles away from home with my daughter and 2 grandchildren. Alan the owner looked at my car and told me it was my head casket and couldnt be sorted. Alan not only bought my car so I didnt need to try and get it home, he also drove myself and my family with all our luggage 53 miles home. I cannot thank him and his wife gillian enough they certainly went the extra mile for me and my family. I fully recommend thier service to everyone.

Alan cut short his holiday to drive us over 400 miles back to our home in Wiltshire. Nothing was too much trouble. We will be forever in his debt for saving the day and transporting us along with our 2 dogs and campervan from Edinburgh. We had been informed by our breakdown insurance company that we may need to be transported by several recovery companies along the way home but Alan drove us all the way back in one journey. We had a serious accident on the A1 heading north in the early hours so not business hours Our car was not drivable and was a write off. Alan was an absolute saviour in coming out as soon as he could, getting our car safely placed at his garage and gave us the peace of mind we needed in our frantic state of minds. The company have been outstanding.

Allan saved our holidays! We had a busted tyre in the middle of the A1. Unfortunately our insurance company couldn’t really help us. But luckily, there was Allan! He came towing our car, he drove around till late in the evening to find the right tyre to fit, and he fixed our car, so we still could continue our journey the same day! Allan was extremely helpful, very professional and welcoming. So what more to say: call Allan if you need the perfect help for your car :-)

A great team - they went above and beyond what I expected, quickly and with the minimum of fuss. So happy that we were rescued by D.A.Thorburn. It was raining and we needed to be somewhere when the car's head gasket broke. Alan was on the scene swiftly, and forced the issue with the break down company we were with, by taking the initiative. We were driven to our holiday home almost immediately after getting the car to the garage. The next day Gillian convinced the recovery company to do the right thing and to let us have a courtesy car for the rest of the holiday and to get home at the end. We got back to Yorkshire on Saturday and early the next morning Scott delivered our car to our house. I can't thank this team enough - they made what could have been a stressful situation into a very smooth and trouble free experience. Thank you.

This review is very very late, but its finally here! Our car broke down in Northumberland on the last night of our camping holiday at the end of August. Our recovery company made all sorts of ridiculous suggestions to get us and our 5 children back to Sheffield. Julie heard about our situation as their company had been asked to recover our car and suggested that she would drive us home in her family car! She picked myself and the kids up and drove us all the way back to Sheffield, (my husband went in the recovery truck). Not only that, but she went even further and helped us to transfer all our camping and holiday gear from the garage (where the car was recovered to) to our house. I will honestly never forget such kindness and generosity. It could have been such an awful, stressful memory for all of us but Julie helped it become a fond tale we tell about when we went camping in Northumberland! Thank you so much Julie, you are an absolute gem! And if you are reading this Julie, yes I managed to sort out school shoes before the start of term 😅. We are very glad that we were allocated this company when we broke down. Alan and Scott went out of their way to recover us, get us to the airport on time, and fix the vehicle whilst we were away! Alan also inconvenienced himself to get the vehicle back to us on our return; we are very grateful. My motor home broke down on the A1 near Dunbar. A recovery lorry from DA Thorburn responded very promptly and loaded my motor home onto his lorry before taking my wife and me back to Stirling. Everything was done very safely and professionally, and the mechanic was very polite and friendly.

My car broke down near Cockburnspath in a slightly dangerous position on A1. Knew I might face a multi-hour wait for the AA so thought I would see if there were any local garages available to tow the car more quickly. Amazingly within fifteen minutes D A Thornburn had sent a recovery vehicle, and they not only took it to their site but then drove me to Dunbar railway station. All this meant that I was able to get to my destination (Barnsley, over 200 miles away) as planned and pick up my new (and obviously much needed!) car. Extremely friendly, speedy and helpful service throughout, highly recommended.

Recently I had my left rear tyre burst on the live lane (southbound) while heading back from Edinburgh to Catterick Garrison somewhere in Scotland near Dunbar and I had to stop on the live lane. Since my breakdown cover team was bit unprofessional and took much much longer time than I expected I opted to do it privately and requested Allan and Gillian from D A Thorburn Motor Engineers to help me out to which they were very very helpful and efficient from beginning till the end. I was very pleased with their service and professionalism they had. Much appreciated.

Brilliant recovery service. Broke down on fast A road in middle of nowhere far from home on a Sunday as the sun was going down and temp. already below freezing, so we were all feeling pretty stressed. Colin arrived well within time predicted and was lovely. A credit to his firm. Great that he got us to the garage safely and efficiently despite the icy conditions. But his kindness and interesting chat that helped the journey time whiz past and made us feel a whole lot better were what made him stand out as a real diamond.
