Reviews of Polentoni

Fantastic wee cafe, amazingly delicious Italian pastries, focaccia, sandwiches, and other tasty treats. The flavour and quality of ingredients are top notch, at a good price too. A real gem, the best in the city! 10/10 would recommend
D. E.
Amazing food. The focaccia is delcious and the ciabatta sandwiches are to die for. Great customer service too. I have a dairy allergy and they always do their best to accommodate 👌🏻

A niche café.
This Italian café is located near Calton Hill, 10-15 minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley station.
I was very intrigued by this café as it was highly rated (4.8 stars) on google reviews and it was near where I was staying.
The first thing to note is that the café does not allow customers who only want to drink because there is not much seating available.
My table was a bit sticky when I arrived.
The dishes are unique in that they are not typical Italian dishes, these dishes have a unique twist and is run by native Italians.
The wild boar ragu gnocchi was not available on the day I went. Instead, I ordered the Arancini which was one of the special’s of the day and it costed £10. The Arancini was tasty. I also ordered the mocha (£2.50) which was a bit too sweet, I could even see the brown sugar granules at the bottom of the drink as I was finishing the drink. For me the prices are more towards the pricey side.
Overall, a unique café with interesting food but the mocha was a bit of letdown and the prices are more on the pricey side.

All of our food was delicious. The portions are generous, the atmosphere is lovely and staff were friendly. There's no alcohol served but you can bring your own (£3 corkage if it's wine), which is great because there are two beer and wine stores with great selections just a few meters away. I didn't plan to get a pudding but then I tried my partner's tiramisu and had to get one of my own. Pudding prices are generous too.

Excellent Italian food. No pizza, just nice normal really testy good food. Is a BYOB, so you can bring drinks from the near places to enjoy your meal. Cousy, comfortable, nice, simple but elegant. Great coffee
S. W.
Great little place. The menu is really different as well, with a heavy Italian influence. Polenta, burrata, pancetta; fantastic quality ingredients. The staff are also lovely, make you feel very welcome. Highly recommended.

Best place for coffee and food in the area
£2.50 for a great flat white both next door coffee shops are 90p more a cup.

The results of testing
#JacobDeerCooking vs @polentoni_
I both two focaccia’s one with beetroot, goat cheese and roasted pepper, the second with spinach, eggs, mushrooms and truffle oil.
Also I get one pistachio bundt.
Focaccias cost each £3.50, pistachios Bundt £1.50.
All were quite ok.
I wouldn’t call that “focaccia” as the dough is quite dense, but little bit crispy outside. So, the dough is something between pizza dough (dense) and focaccia (more bobbly inside and crispy outside). I cannot taste truffle at all in the spinach focaccia, eggs are nicely done and good quality. Beetroot need some more spices as is quite bland, the goat cheese is a decent quality. Better quality olive oil would be a good idea too.
The pistachio Bundt, tasty, but you can’t really tasty pistachios itself as the Bundt is super sweet. However, you can see that they put inside a lot of grated pistachios.
Overall, fine food for that price and they need to improve only a little bit to amazing. If you have some time give them a chance and check how you like their food.
Regards
Jake

I am giving 5 stars because I cannot give 10! This place sure it's tiny and you may have to queue for a bit, but God their food is heavenly! I have been today for a late lunch with my partner and we both had the gnocchi with fennel sausage sauce. I was almost moved to tears because the flavors of the sauce remembered the one my old grandma used to prepare for the family on Sunday lunches. Please help me spread the word about this place because such wonderful businesses deserve to have a huge success!

This little place is an absolute gem, been here numerous times, and I'm never disappointed.
The food is always amazing (to be honest I could eat their polenta chips on their own!). Very authentic, fresh, and presented beautifully.
Staff are always friendly and helpful. The place is quite compact so I try and come at less busier times, to guarantee a table.
T. G.
Franco, the owner, has a true talent. A real hidden gem on Easter Rd. And the best chocolate torte on the planet. His pizza variety is terrific and one of the only places that has true Italian fennel sausage. Worth every penny.
J. D.
Outstanding food, sandwiches are amazing. Fresh, high quality ingredients at a reasonable price. The coffee is really good too. Usually I order a latte and more often than not I like to add sugar. Not here though. The latte quality need not be tainted by extra sugar here! If I had one word to describe the coffee here, it’d be ‘smooth’. It goes down a treat.
Do yourself a favour and give this place a try. You won’t regret it!
M. d. W.
Had an absolutely delicous and amazing breakfast here. The dishes were a mixture of Scottish and Italian. Varying price options, not too expensive. Service was super friendly and kind. I also took some bread with me for lunch, amazing as well. Would absolutelt recommend anyone looking for a great breakfast in Edinburgh to go here!
A. W.
This is a superb cafe, full of cracking Italian plates, breads and pastries. Polenta on every dish!
The value is excellent too. I'd love to be able to have a little glass of wine as I go too, so I'll be back to try the rest of the menu.
p.
Overall, coffee and food is really nice; however, personally I found my dish contained slightly too much truffle oil and needed to add more salt for the taste. Anyway, my friend enjoyed her dish so much.
J. R.
Delicious little cafe a bit away from the rush of downtown. Both breakfast dishes were delicious. Toast was thick and crunchy and the egg was cooked perfectly. Highly recommend.
Bonus: buy some biscuits or baked goods on the way out to prolong your enjoyment.
L. B.
Delicious tiny and comfortable place where you can enjoy an amazing coffee and drink. Today my soya cappuccino and Polenta and raisin biscuits with mascarpone were ace! If you like Italian tradition and food, go there!
K. B.
Stumbled upon this place after visiting Cloud9 next door. The coffee was delicious and fairly priced. My partner ordered a chocolate cake which was half brownie and half cake and scoffed it in less then 10 seconds, saying it's the best cake he's had (and he loves his food!). Great food, great coffee and friendly staff
A. C.
This is a really unique place in Edinburgh with real authentic Italian dishes! The kitchen menu has dishes that you can't find anywhere else, the sandwiches are somehow simple but amazing and they really make me feel like I'm home in Italy. Sometimes they do special menus like the seafood feast and that's always well done. Really recommend this place
A. C.
This place does amazing food, the hot food is fantastic as are the sandwiches. And the cakes!
J. J.
Excellent, excellent, excellent. Service, ambiance, quality, flavour. We had the porchetta and the tartufo. So perfect. ♥
A. M.
Love it! Worth a visit and provides me with an opportunity to play my favourite game of ‘pastry wars’ between the cafes on Easter Road… the winner is still to be announced! Polentoni is in the running 🍰
A. H.
Fresh tasty food, friendly service. Can get a bit busy so be prepared!
M. S.
Lovely wee find on Easter Road and like most Scottish things, Polentoni is understatedingly extraordinary. Fantastic Italian food at very attractive prices.
J. M.
Absolutely awesome Italian deli. Best place for lunch, brunch and bread on Easter Road. 1/2 the price of the competition and 2x as good IMO. My favourites are the Nutella swirls, house bread and potato focaccia.
C. S.
Friendly host but unfortunately only take away during pandemic.
A. A.
Delicious vegetarian sandwiches and foccacia. Really lovely for a weekend brunch, especially as there are quite a few cafes on that stretch of the street so there's a lot to pick from if you're in a group.
I. H.
What a find sandwiches were amazing and the blueberry dessert was delicious
S. C.
I was only here for a lazy brunch on a Saturday morning. The coffee was nice and so was the atmosphere. The breakfast menu was very short and, although the dishes sounded delicious, it was really lacking an option for the unadventurous. I love trying new foods and that was fine for me, but my partner was craving some relaxed comfort food and nothing on the menu matched that. The food arrived and, for the mix of ingredients, it was a bit bland and had a bit too much oil. Staff was friendly and helpful.
All in all, I would return here for dinner some time, but it won't be my regular brunch spot any time soon.
P. U.
Wonderful food and excellent customer service, super recommended!
N. K.
Great vibe, delicious properly made food, decent prices, incredible bread!
D. O.
A year of covid restrictions and this place has shown if you sell quality you will survive and possibly thrive.
The bread supplied way better than many purpose fitted 'bakers'.
Combination of focaccia, always good.
Soups can be a wee bit different.
Never bad. Not his forte. I think.
This the thing. You get picky in that place.
You always expect 100% good matching Italian flavours.
Always worth the queuing.
S. D.
I can't remember what this plate of deliciousness was called, but I can tell you that I will be returning very soon to have it again!
0.
Maybe the best Italian food you’ll find in Edinburgh. Epic sandwiches and savories. Dark chocolate cake to die for. Heavenly lemon polenta cake and amazing hot chocolates to keep us cheery during lockdown. Proper treats and lovely, lovely owners.
M. H.
Great coffee and Italian specialities at this family owned cafe.
D. B.
Gorgeous little coffee shop the type of place you wished you lived upstairs and it was where you hang out most of the day. Except you would easy too many delicious cakes and this week you're allowed lots of coffee so that's fine. Lots of other yummy food things to try out too.
S. D.
Friendly and attentive staff. Food was great. There was an option on some dishes to have a small portion so I had two. Both of the gnocchis. My favourite was the one with roasted butternut squash. It was pretty incredible!
I also had a cappuccino and it was definitely way above average.
S. S.
Awesome food in a cozy place. Service is fast and friendly. Highly recommended!
E. C.
This is one of the best places to have breakfast or lunch in Edinburgh. A real hidden gem. Great atmosphere, great staff, great coffee and delicious food. Often very busy, but worth waiting for a table. The tortufo is the best thing on the menu in my opinion
j. l.
Polentoni is one of the bests assets for any Hillside, Abbymount, Leith- or even Edinburgh in a broad sense- inhabitant. As the name suggests, Polenta is its specialty and part of the many delicious dishes. I look forward for my weekly informal yet special sandwich (perfect bread by the way) as well as for the special dishes such as the incredible gnocchi and Friday's specials. Franco and Polentoni are by far a very recommended spot!
E. C.
Fantastic little restaurant - what a great find! I had the mushrooms with baked eggs and truffle oil, which were heavenly. The polenta chips were perfectly cooked too. All finished off with a great coffee. Couldn't recommend more highly.
C. P.
Best italian place in Edinburgh! Breakfast, lunch or coffee you won't be disappointed.
N. K.
Great and authentic sandwiches and cakes.
L. B.
Great food. Friendly service. Good coffee.
It's quite small but they've managed to make it feel cosy rather than cramped.
I was recommended this place by a friend and I would recommend to others. Will come again.
N. T.
Great food! Staff are always very friendly too
D. W.
Awesome little place for brunch. Loved the polenta chips with pork belly. Friendly staff that even offered to refill the tea pot without me asking first. Will definitely be returning!
A. W.
Absolutely delicious brunch - really high quality made with love and care. Plus relaxing environment and friendly service. My favourite cafe in Edinburgh.
M. N.
Amazing food, great service and good coffee.
Prices are a bit higher than you'd expect, but the quality of the food is very high.
Often a full house, so get there early if you want a seat!
H. B.
Sort of don't want to review Polentoni because it's my favourite brunch/lunch spot and I don't want other people discovering it and RUINING it and taking all the tables. The crispy polenta is to die for. Everything on the menu is drool worthy and the cakes and bakes are worth taking away once you've stuffed yourself at your table. The prices have gone up a bit but just more in line with other places around Edinburgh. Staff are A+
j. p.
We frequent for breakfast sometimes twice a week. Cannot fault the food. Very tasty and different. Worth the money and a visit. The staff are very friendly helpful and polite.
S. G.
If you're on a walk a little bit outside of the city or you're searching for a good breakfast or lunch, you shouldn't miss "Polentoni". Great service connected with tasty food and a pleasant atmosphere made this restaurant our number one choice for the morning. And don't forget to try the sweets 😉... Best regards from Germany
S. C.
Love this wee café, food was amazing baked good is out of this world. The shop is on a little bit on the small size, but I think it give it that warm and welcoming feel too it. Totally recommended.
A. M.
Outstanding food. Excellent service. I'd say "go" but I want to keep this place to myself..
Really very, very well worth a visit for anyone who loves fish/seafood.
S. P.
Local gem. Italian fish suppers on Fridays and Saturdays are outstandingly good - authentic, fresh and always delicious. Practically perfect. It's byob btw.
E. C.
Lovely place!
We are Italian and after all this years in Edinburgh, we finally found a place with food from our hometown, up in the mountains in northern Italy.
That said, we definitely suggest this place for really authentic northern Italian food!
E. P.
My favourite breakfast place! Delicious dishes, coffee, buns. Always nice music. Also buy polenta here if you want to try yourself at home. A damn shame it is closed on Sundays.
S. K.
Staff were wonderful and very friendly. Food was excellent. This place was highly recommended by a local, and it did not disappoint. Will definitely be visiting here again when I'm in Edinburgh next
M. B.
Great place! Great customer service and world class delicious food.
We had the best breakfast in Polentoni under our Scottish holiday. Thanks guys! You are awesome!
N. J.
As the name suggests, they specialise in polenta. The polenta fries are indeed very good and are worth a visit just on their own. It's a small place with seating for maybe twenty people max including the tables outside. Service was quick and very friendly. They don't have a huge menu, but there are some nice options, including some things without polenta. They do a good selection of breakfast/brunch choices with a twist. There is on-street parking available nearby if you are willing to search for it. In summary I'd say it's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. Order the polenta fries and you won't be disappointed!
M. B.
I'm from Italy and I really feel to be home when I come eat something here, I still didn't find something that I don't like, nice coffee, amazing bread and they do fresh squeezed orange and grapefruit juice.
lovely food and lovely people
R. F.
Superb local cafe serving fresh, interesting northern Italian style food. Possibly my favourite brunch place in town. Cosy setting, friendly service. Highly recommended.
D. B.
Small boutique coffee shop. Serves breakfast and lunch. A selection of sweet cakes and scones to eat with coffee. Sit in or take away. Lovely coffee and food. Worth a visit!
J. L. R.
Un fantastico Espresso, un ambiente piacevole che fa ritrovare un pizzico d'Italia tra le strade di Edimburgo.
The espresso was fantastic, a cozy and warm place that make you feel a little bit of Italy in the street of Edinburgh.
J. F.
I only stopped for some cake and coffee but this little cafe has nice vibes and staff. There is lunch and dinner menu on offer and the savoury foods coming out of the kitchen looked fresh and delicious.
J. S.
Cosy breakfast/lunch style cafe with casual ambience and friendly staff. If you enjoy pork, give the porchetta a try and pair it with a citrus beverage like orange or grapefruit juice to get some relief from the indulgent richness of the dish.
M. T.
Amazing coffee, lovely staff and very on trend decor and styling. Great for just a coffee or a full on meal!
e. s.
So sad we found Polentoni on our last day in Edinburgh, would absolutely eat here every morning! Food is very very good, the service lovely and finally good espresso in Scotland!
S. v. H.
The food here is to die for! Proper italian flavors and lovely staff. We were there for breakfast but also took some of the delicious sandwiches to go for lunch later.
l. f.
Excellent food. Veggie options which were very tasty. Small venue but well worth visiting and staff very attentive.
P. F.
Friendly service, good coffee and yummy polenta-based brunch options. Quite small, so there may be a wait for tables depending on the time of day.
C. J.
A fantastic place with great well imagined food ideas. Lovely atmosphere. Great coffee and helpful staff. Great place to go anytime.
C. B.
My Italian favourite place. The quality of food is great and not so expensive. Coffee is also one of the best in Edinburgh.
J. H.
Fab.. get the seafood feast before it finishes (I assume for the season, surely it will return!) but I'm sure it will be replaced by something equally good. 🙏
C. K.
Amazing home-cooked Italian food, far from the usual carbonara-pizza-bolognese trinity. A lovely place to have a late breakfast or a relaxed lunch.
A. F.
I love it! Great brunch but I miss the variety of options they used to have...it s a shame..all of them were fantastic!
S. F.
The breakfast was delicious. We were also jealous of the customers who stopped in to take away from the display case as those treats also looked appetizing.
c. h.
So so good! Food is delicious.
J. M.
Splendidly tasty gnocchi. Very rich sauce. I had trouble finishing it all. Reckon I should have ordered some sort of salad to cut it a little.
A. R.
It has very nice Italian breakfasts. Ranging from focaccias, calzone and other delicious dishes. It is a great option for vegetarians
M. K.
Nice enough food (baked eggs were overcooked a bit though) - service was slightly shambolic and took quite a while to get the bill, so much so they were turning people away who could have had our table...!
G. T.
Great ingredients, beautifully combined to make for great tastes.
M. A.
Amazing, proper, genuine, no-nonsense flavourful Italian food - you can't go wrong!
M. G.
I have no words. Just look at the pics. Def best brunch I've ever had. Be sure to get there early or go on a weekday because the place is tiny
