Reviews of Aux Pains de Papy
C. N.
This French bakery used to make the best croissants and other pastries.. Sadly the chap (one of the original owners) who used to oversee the whole process is gone and standards have slipped significantly. The croissants still taste great on a good day but are often a bit too soggy/oily. Even the small cakes look slightly deformed compared to before and I'm not sure if it's just me but they don't taste as good.
Get there before 9 for fresh croissants
Summary: OK but not great as before
L. G.
Great bakery! I love their croissants, especially the almond one! The fillings inside and the crispy, buttery, sugary outside just works so well together!
The Paris Brest and the apple tart were great too, though not as impressed as the croissants. Good service too!
They have savory selections and lot of other bread too. Will give it a try next time!
M. T.
I went in for a cappucino (pretty good) and a filled baguette. The filling was good, but the baguette itself was perhaps the best I have had in the UK, certainly up to the best French or Portuguese standard.

This French bakery is an unassuming gem! Come here for their almond croissants and decadent croque monsieur. They are well worth the calories!! 😋
R. H.
Fabulous authentic French boulangerie. The croissants are stunning. Couple of tables out front too on which to enjoy a hit of their excellent espresso.
8.
One of the best pain au chocolat ever! Delicious, with almonds on top and plenty of chocolate cream.
L. W.
This used to be the best croissant shop in the world but has been taken over by new owners and is not the same anymore!
K. Z.
Local family run French bakery serving huge, flaky, buttery pain au chocolat goodness. I get really sad when I finish my pain au chocolat (4/5 gobbled now) and just want moreee :( Also ordered a flat white with oat milk today, really smooth yummy coffee :))
If you're in the area definitely drop in, especially to support local businesses! They have both sweet and savory goods. Had a nice chat with the fella working there too (human interaction is greatly appreciated these days), excellent service and will be dropping in more to fill my ever-hungry stomach~

Excellent pastries and tea! I had a plain and almond croissant with a tea kettle. The croissants were heavenly flaky and you taste the butter inside. Staff was very polite and treated the customer with warmth 😊
Made the mistake of eating at a regular chain cafe the next day, regretted it, and going back to Aux Pains for some takeaway! 😁
M. J.
This used to be one of the best bakeries in London with delicious croissants, baguettes and brioches cremes - run with enthusiasm by three French brothers. The new owners seem to aim for the same quality, but clearly with less success: the croissants are soggy and ooze butter, other pastries lack flavour and make up for it in sugar and fat. I have come back several times over the last year - not wanting to accept the loss of a good neighbourhood bakery - but have finally given up.
J. Z.
Proper French pastries here, and the baguettes! Try the Mille Feuille, Papy nailed that cream recipe. Simply divine.
S. H. T.
Astonishingly good light, buttery, flaky, still warm croissants handmade by French bakers. Their products are 100% made on site.
J. C.
I've had many tasty croissants and pain au chocolat in Paris, and I was pleasantly surprised to find these so close to home near King's Cross. The croissant, pain au chocolat, and the pain au chocolat aux amandes were delicious and authentic. The owners are also wonderful and friendly - such a hidden gem! I'd definitely recommend this place. I can't wait to try other pastries and bread here!
N. H.
Simply the best croissants and pain au chocolat.
Great coffee and lovely people too!
T. K.
Oh. My. God. Had the croquet monsieur and it was out of this world! What a perfect way to start the day. My only regret is that I didn't go here until the last day of my trip. The next time I'm in London, I will definitely go back and enjoy more baked goodies.
I. J.
Very French, decent pastries and good coffee. Authentic and French-owned rather than a chain. Laughably-busy and congested road, but managed to sit in the pavement Ana d watch the traffic not move. If I worked nearby I'd be here several times a day. A bright offering in an otherwise grungey bit of town.
M. T.
Probably the BEST croissants I’ve had in London. So buttery, so crumbly, overall wonderful and melts in your mouth. Nice staff. My only disappointment was that they didn’t serve any alternative milks with their coffee. I’m genuinely lactose intolerant and cannot consume cow milk, so I’m not going through a fashion or a fad; i hope they change with the times and offer oat/soy/almond milk.
Z. M.
A bit underwhelming but fairly good croissants and pains aux chocolat for London!

I have mixed feeling about this bakery. I lived in Grey's Inn road 6 years ago, and I still work around Kings cross. I remember when I tried the traditional method baguette years ago (there were two different kinds of, 'common' one using dry yeast and traditional one using old dough as yeast) I was so impressed; it was better than ones i got in Paris. The guys in the bakery were very French, even more local than what you would see in Paris. Authetic bread, brilliant croissant, and believe it or not, they had Mariage Freres tea for only £1.4 per cup.
Pandemic changed everything. The French bakers all went home; during the recent lockdown, the last French owner also left. I am sure they gave all the recipes to the new team and I am sure the new team tried hard to get everything right. But the fact is by last year things already tasting different. I visit them again recently, the croissant was still pretty decent; actually better than last year. I think they got it right again. However the baguette was really not the same thing anymore. I am not even sure they use the same flour, the inside doesn't look as white as before. It is still baguette, and surely still better than Waitrose ones, but I am not sure it's better than even Paul UK, which is not at all impressive. The patisserie part is basically all changed, nothing really like before.
I still give them 4 stars, because first of all, it's not easy to any bakery to survive these days, and I appreciate that they still try hard to run business. We should support it. Secondly, I don't believe only French people can make French bakery. I believe they can get the taste right again, if they stick with the original recipes and ingredients. I will still visit and see how things go.
D. N.
Feels like Paris :) good coffee and amazing pain au chocolat. Great for a quick breakfast.
L. P. L. D. C.
Great service, wonderful sweets and very cosy place, I'm sure I'll come back more often!
M. R.
Simply beautiful. I had a smoked chicken salad sandwich (the smoked chicken was perfectly cooked and a wonderful surprise) with a pistachio éclair and a little bottle of apricot necter. Aux pains du papy is a rare gem and by far the best French cafe in London. I'll be back :)
K. B.
Work across the road and me and my friends frequently get sweet treats from here, its fab. Love the pan au chocolat, had a passionfruit tart and it was gorgeous, tart! Also had a chicken baguette, really great. 10/10 would recommend.
M. E.
This is simply the BEST French bakery in the neighbourhood. It's a kinda London secret. If you like your croissant extremely buttery this is the place for you.
K. H.
I am very impressed with the quality of the service and the amazing cake that I send to my daughter, Aux Pains Papy were absolutely impressive in their delivery too, I am grateful and satisfy 100% of this excellent patisserie!
C. H.
One of the best almond croissants in the world ❤️
A. L.
I don’t recommend buying almond croissants here, pretty awful - too oily and not fresh :( Latte is ok.
L. S.
Tiny French bakery (with all-French staff, at least when I visited) with a small selection of viennoiserie (mostly croissants) and bread along with coffee and a few other light things. Their butter croissants are amazingly flaky and delicious—as good or better than any I had in Paris. Their almond chocolate croissants were interesting, but I probably wouldn't have it again...among other things, the chocolate wasn't the highest quality. Definitely worth a stop if you're near King's Cross and want some great French baked goods!
J. F.
Waiting for a train at kings cross we looked about and saw nothing of interest, so I googled ‘croissants’. It turns out this place is war the station and has a small bar area inside and a small seating area outside. The coffee was good and strong (win 1) and the pastries were plentiful and there were far more varieties than I’d seen before even in some bakeries in France (win 2). What we ordered first was a pair of croissants and then because they were so good added another few items to take on the train (win 3 and 4). Everything was fresh and delicious! Try as much as possible and over buy.
M. G.
Early morning croissants are the best way to start the day, and Aux Pains de Papy doesn't disappoint. Flaky and buttery, their croissants and pastries are well executed and reasonably priced. Definitely recommend stopping by, you'll not be disappointed.
A. L.
Like some of the recent reviews, the quality and standard has significantly slipped. It’s a real shame.
H. S.
Amazing croissants and lovely customer service.
S. S.
I had an absolutely delicious almond croissant and pain au chocolat with a very good cappuccino from this cafe this morning. The croissant and pain au chocolat were made with lovely soft layers of tasty pastry and were without any doubt the best almond croissant and pain au chocolat I have ever had. My friend had them and she agreed. I also bought a baguette and the bread was so good and tasted fantastic with a bit of butter and cheese. The cafe itself had a really nice French atmosphere with actual real French people serving who said things like ‘merci bon weekend’ which made me feel like I was in France for a moment until I had to walk out onto Gray’s Inn Road. I am coming back to this place to try more of their stuff. Highly recommended.
R. V.
Changed of owner so not having a Frenchy friendly service. And saddely the croissants and the pains au chocolat are not as good as before. Now, it's an average/good UK bakery. It is still okay but just not as good as before. Like everyone else I'm disappointed.
A. W.
Amazing authentic french boulangerie. There has been a change of management and a few teething problems but the food is still amazing - one if the original team have returned to take the reins and is doing an amazing job. Still one of the best in London
J. A.
An authentic little French bakery in the centre of London. All the products are delicious and made with love and top quality ingredients. The staff are so cute and polite all the time and you can tell they do their job with real passion.
R. B.
Was informed about this coffee shop by Stephen of Kilts4all. It would be very easy to walk past as the exterior is very restrained, but you are really rewarded if you enter and buy some of their products. The coffee was great. As was the roll that was heated up. Great fresh ingredients that are really prepared on the premises by those who serve you. Thoroughly recommended.
D. H.
Quaint corner of London that tastes of Provence. The bakers here are expert craftsmen and though the end product may not be presented with all the fanfare you see in shop windows of other bakery chains, for taste this place can't be topped anywhere north of the channel.
Please note that my previous comments refer to the bakery under the previous ownership. I have not since visited Aux Pains de Papy so my comments above no longer apply.
S.
thought we made a wrong turn and ended up back in France. We had the chocolate and the almond croissants. Also coffee to accompany. Sat at the small counter. Place was busy, but not overly so, the whole time we were there. Croissants were flakeyand buttery just like they should be. Highly recommended if you can't get to France....
T. B.
Went there for the croissant, wasn’t blown away.
M. C.
Probably the best patisserie in London. Go early or things will run out.
T. H.
True French bakery arrived in London, you will not find true french bread in another places in London. I love France and french cusine and french people, so I travel offten there, I know the taste of french bread. Here two lovely and hard working brothers make the best bread and passtiserie in London. I am touched by they kindness and very friendly service . It is really worth visiting this place , you might have your spoiling spot, for yummy crossonant or other sweet treats. Don't wait for it , you won't regret and they are from south of France, so you don't need travel so far because they are here with old recipes from many generation, even Royal family buy passtiserie from France in paris for , because they are the best , two brothers are also the best in baking true bread in entire London!!!!
R. S.
There it's a nice assortment of pastries and sandwiches. I arrived early (about 7:30 a.m.) for a morning tea and pastry and thought the sandwich selection a bit limited, but as I sat and people watched I noticed the sandwich selection grew. So if you want a choice of sandwiches then come after 9 a.m. not only will you have a wider variety too choose from, I can tell you they will all have been made fresh just moments before.
L. C.
Absolutely fantastic! I had been desperately trying to find a Marjolaine cake but had no luck in any other bakeries. Despite not including them in their selection, they researched the ingredients and baked one especially. Safe to say it was the best cake I've ever eaten and will definitely be popping in to sample some more! Couldn't recommend enough, thanks so much!
b. o.
Forget Costa, forget Starbucks, forget Cafe Nero. This place is amazing. Coming from an Italian background I've been brought up to be critical of anywhere I eat that isn't up to the standard of the food u would find in Italy, but this place I would absolutely recommend, I can honestly say the best mocha I have had in in this country! The cakes are delicious and they even sell hand made baguettes. Run by two brothers, who are very friendly, you will honestly feel like ur in a bakery somewhere in France. 5 star ✌🏾️
B. N.
Great French bakery experience.
A. J.
In regards to the change of ownership ... I visited this delightful spot a few times before the (recent?) change and have just popped in for a few pain aux chocos. My colleagues and I found them of a good standard, we’ll revisit and try some of the other items to further refine our opinion. As an aside, the staff were polite : ]
N. S.
Lovely little French place!
The croissants are super buttery and simply melt in your mouth 🥐
H. K.
Simple but awesome taste. Best French patiserie in area.
S. J.
Fabulous coffee breads pastries and croissant!!!
This place is worth taking a trip to London just to enjoy a delicious sandwich and take away a Grand Campagne.
Very Highly Recommended
C. F.
One of the best croissant / pain au chocolat places I've been to! I live in the neighborhood and go here almost every Saturday morning with my daughter. The french family that owns it always greets her with an enthusiastic "coucou"...most the staff come up from the back to say hi...she loves it. Don't know a lot of french people in our neighborhood, but this patisserie always seems to be full of them. We lived in France for about a year...and the quality of Aux Pains de Papy's product and service is as good or better than anything I experienced in France. The family used to have several patisseries in the south of France, then closed up shop and moved to London in 2013 (lucky us!)...really wonderful people, wonderful food....can't recommend enough!
M. K.
Coffee was great and the croissants were quite big and delicious, a filling breakfast. Place has a bit of rustic and hipster feel.
s. s.
simply delicious, fresh and high quality product 😍
F.
Best croissants I’ve ever had. SO delicious. Fantastic coffee too.
M. W.
Very welcoming little bakery with superb pastries, tarts and other delicacies. Great place for lunch, although as the previous review said there are only 3 stools in the building. Need one of these closer to Reading, Berkshire!
M. R.
These guys are amazing. Traditional family run bakery in the heart of Kings cross. Their food is out of this world and they are incredibly friendly and welcoming. Best sandwiches in the area.
K. T.
Really amazing fresh bread, brioche, croissants etc for very decent prices. Staff are super friendly. Will definitely go back!
G. K.
The best croissants in London (unfortunately for my waistline I buy one every time I pass)
H. L.
Brilliant place! Excellent food, nice coffee, and very authentic french staff. In the best way possible.
You can eat innside, there is a few barstools, outside at the two tables or get your food wrapped up and take it home.
Pastries, cakes, sandwiches, bread … all good.
A. T.
Best bakery in the Kings Cross area by far. Amazing croissants, bread and coffee plus the people running it are the most friendly and welcoming!
T. H.
Couple of nice items such as the almond based ones but overpriced and better options available nearby
A. J.
Lovely staff. Don't know the name of the items I got, but all yummy and quite reasonably priced I thought. Also the staff were lovely and even advised us to refrigerate our items which we wouldn't have done otherwise as we were going to a restaurant.
B. B.
Merveilleuse! Absolutely unique and delicious. Try the Paris Brest! Now refurbished and the look has changed. But the food is just as brilliant!
A. E. I.
French patisserie where you can also have breakfast. Run and owned by French people. You can tell it's authentic by the croissants!! Cheap prices and really good products.
S. M.
Very French but not quite as high quality as I was expecting. Still, I had some nice bread and a decent pastry from here made with more love than at Tesco.
S. L.
Simply the most authentic french bakery in London. Better than quite a few Parisian bakeries I've been too - and I know what I'm talking about, je suis français !
L. W.
You can't go wrong with anything you get at Aux Pains de Papy! We tried many things during our stay. Our favorites being anything with croissant and the very chocolatey macaroon.
a. r.
Ahhh, one of the best croissants in any style, and the bechamel croissant is to die for, also check out the special bakes of mini croissants and cookies. Amazing place and friendly staff.

P. H.
Excellent food and friendly staff
J. “. G.
Patisserie you don't find easily elsewhere in London. On the downside, seating is a problem, with only 2 street tables and half a table inside. Better to take out.
N. C.
Perfect patissiere / viennoiserie lovingly made fresh by a family team. Best french patisserie in London I've ever been to. Faultless!
C. S.

(Translated) This shop was introduced to the most delicious bakery in London and a popular YouTuber.
I visited for croissants in the early afternoon, but the croissants were sold out before noon. I had a baguette sandwich, but the bread was very delicious as it was well received.
It is a popular shop that customers are constantly visiting. The coffee was also delicious. There were also sweets.
There are eat-in spaces inside and outside the store. Next time I would like to get up early and challenge the croissants.

The fig bread and galette de roi are nice, friendly price, get quality bread under £2 in city centre is not easy!
Not impressed by the baguette so I only give 4 star.
