Reviews of Maison Bertaux
A. B.
We saw this place on Mary Berry's show and thought that we had to try it. We're very glad we did, the pastries were amazing the coffee/hot chocolate were good too. It was a great introduction to the wonders of French patisserie.
박.
How lovely cafe it is!!🫖
I heard this scone store is the oldest one in London. I admired the taste of scone, blueberry jam and cream. I bring some croissants for my kids. I expect those tastes as well. 🥐
And luckily I met one of gentle man who is a friend with the owner of the cafe for 35 years. He helped to enjoy tea and scone with good stories. I will visit here again and again.
a. t.
A small shop with very delicious sweet and cakes. I have tried strawberry tart and cheesecake and I liked the taste. The stuff working there are very nice and friendly. The gentleman there was happy to tell me about the ingredients. The packaging is nice and clean. It’s worth going there.
T. J.
This french-inspired tea room and patisserie serves up some of the best cakes in London, and in wonderful, authentic surroundings. Visit Maison Bertaux for a truly unique experience, and enormous almond croissants!

Saw this cafe on a programme with Mary Berry yesterday, so thought we'd drop by. We had two cakes (hazelnut & Cherry) an English tea and an Iced coffee.
The cakes were delicious as was the tea but the iced coffee was rather tasteless which they took off the bill. The only let down was the seating area. We were asked to sit at a dirty table with unclean dishes. The tables were really old and rickety and the toilet was in a cellar - a bit unsafe with old decor. We had a nice weather so enjoyed eating outside and the service was good.
R. C.
An absolutely classic cafe. A charming place to sit on the edge of Soho. The selection of French pastries is great and they are classic, homely and satisfying. Friendly and happy staff. Lots of charm
m. m.
Small quaint little coffee and pastry shop. Owners were very nice. The pastries however were not my favorite. I feel like you can find much better viennoiseries elsewhere in London.
T. G.
Lovely selection of desserts and pastries. A petite venue, ideal for tea.
C. W.
Well it's actually back to 2015 when I came here and tried the fruit cheesecake as a tourist, coming to UK for a vacation. 7 years later, I am still thinking about it. It's definitely one of my favorite dessert shop and I cannot wait coming back again soon.
E. T.
Best patisserie in London, hands down. Absolutely delicious pastries, great coffee and I always love to see Michele the wonderful owner. A gem of a place. A little slice of history.
N. K.
Cake and scone was awesome. Tea was really nice and staff were friendly.
However there was this smell in the room on the 1st floor. Would have been perfect without it.
A.
Amazing cakes, you will be spoilt for choice here. I suggest not going to the first floor seating area as the smell is really bad and it will spoil everything for you.
J.
Great scones with clotted cream and jam. Pricey for what it is, but they are good. Lots of tiny nooks for sitting inside, upstairs and next door. Panhandlers often stop to ask for change if you are sitting outside.
A. K.
delightfully fancy, frothy, creamy cakes with a deep layer of nostalgic Soho patina and sui generis proprietors
B. K.
Old place with old vibes and old decor. Not the cleanest, but they make a mean cup of tea and great cakes and scones and such. I would drop by here again for the quirky artomesphere and the great cakes (sit on the top floor, it has a great vibe and a street view)
K. A.
An absolute must for cake enthusiasts! Amazing cakes, tarts & more. In the heart of Soho & staff are friendly.
j. g.
I love this place. As flash as Soho has become, Maison Bertaux retains its original character. Great coffee, innocent charm, take it or leave it. A joy. Long may you remain.

We always pay a visit when in London. The window display of cakes is wonderful to behold and they taste even better. Always busy and popular but staff always friendly and helpfull.
N. B.
The place is as you can imagine very busy but also truly charming.
The service is great and the cakes even better.
Would definitely come back!
J. V. M. S.
I loved the cake, the tea and the ambiance 🥰 definitely, I will come back many times ❤️
B. A.
Beautiful afternoon tea for my daughters birthday lovely lady who served us and did a little cake for my daughter's birthday scones are to die for plain or fruit no sandwiches but the cakes are beautiful forget the Ritz, or Harrods go here might have to wait but its worth it
Z. D.
Amazing chocolate eclairs and cheesecakes. Very helpful staff.
V. D. V.
The cakes are delicious and the place itself is something different!
D. Q.
My kids and I love this place. Amazing (and very filling) cakes and very friendly staff who can help you choose your cakes in the downstairs window. Has a very independent feel to it. No one here is trying to set-ip the first of a global chain of patisseries, they’re just trying to run a good one right here in Soho.
T. G.
This Soho institution is always incredible. You'll be looked after like royalty and served the most wonderful baked goods and perfectly brewed tea. The cheesecake must be ordered, especially when you can see and smell it cooling on the wall mounted racks.
When trying to picture the ambiance here, think of a lovely little tea shop in some quaint Lake District village then imagine that the tea shop has been drinking absinthe and smoking gaulois cigarettes since noon ... This is Soho after all!
J. B.
Maison Bertaux had been recommended by my wife's Uncle who has a penchant for all things cake and pastry related. We were not disappointed at all by the clearly fresh and homemade selection
The decor is definitely rustic and has character. If you expect fine surroundings go elsewhere, if you aren't too fussed about the ambiance but love a good traditional pastry this is the place.
The pastries are authentic (an earlier review inferred éclairs should contain custard, they never have and they never should).
My only concern was that after we had ordered they brought out even more tempting options which made me want to sit there all day and test every single morsal.
J. W.
Small family run business, very good service and delicious food and coffee! Cakes and pastries are amazing!
However, I think they've put the price up..(maybe due to the pandemic)
We had a cake and a pastry, 2 coffee and it came up to nearly £20.....

I don't know why this place has been famous for Koreans but definately worth to try Quiche🥰
Y.
This is my favourite bakery in London. All the cakes are fresh. The owner is just lovely. All the staff smile. The tea is proportionally very generous and the cake slices are huge! The setting looks crampt but is actually very cosy and homey. It’s a true corner of happiness that is in the heart of soho, without all the crowds and noise. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone coming to London.
S. O.
Beautiful little cafe, wonderful pastries. Wonderful staff. Just an excellent experience. So nice to visit again
H. C.
been here since I was a student. 6 years past and Im still here. Everything is all good. They deserve more than 5 stars.
C. E.
Always a treat. Yes it's sometimes busy, it's the west end. It's pricey, it's the west end. However it's a lovely setting, brilliant tea and very nice patisserie, but as much as anything it's the experience of such a small conversion and the history your buying. I've read complaints about pensioners?? prices?? and cake quality I think those people should go to Starbucks for overpriced burnt coffee and a highly processed additive packed croissant, and we'll all be happier.
J. P.
A bit disappointed with scones and croissant not heated up or toasted. Otherwise, typical bakery.
D. G.
An authhentic Institute of soho.
I can hardly emphasis enough how elated I am to see it open and operational after the various lockdowns and laggard logistics this year. Long may it continue to colour the corner of Greek and Old Compton.
Come for the butter and baking, stay for the sincere sense of shabby-shic joie de vie to be found beneath it's bonny blue awnings.
A timeless, true treasure of London.
and still the only place I've managed to find in the city that serves tea as it should be (without charging a limb for it).
Sit, write, watch all of soho. Contemplate, compose, consume copious amounts of confectionary sugar and for goodness sake be kind to the staff!
Bertaux you have my heart, and it is fuller and sweeter for it.
M. J.
I paid £4,80 for a traditional french eclair...well, as far as I know it's supposed to be filled with custard...it was filled with whipped cream, not what I expected (and of course I didn't see it was filled with whipped cream, otherwise I wouldn't have ordered it). However the place looks lovely
O.
Quiet cafe tucked away in the middle of Soho. Nice selection of cakes, pastries and hot drinks. Rooms are decorated with work by local artists. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is the managers can sometimes be a little impatient and rude, but in a weird way, it adds to the charm.
C. L.
A Sheer Delight!
A cute little cafe in Soho. Wonderfully retro and beautifully eccentric ( to get to the other part of the cafe, you have to leave the main area, back on to the street then enter the adjoining door!)
Pastel colours, delicate fairy lights, flowers & chintzy tablecloths- the cafe is tiny- but great fun!
I ordered baked apricot cheese
cake & coffee. Absolute heaven!
The staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive.
Can't wait for my next visit to Maison B!
J. S.
Quaint old cafe- apparently the oldest French patisserie in London.
I had a lovely fruit scone, clotted cream & jam. Lots of old memorabilia on walls, shelves & piano. Made a real change .
F. *.
Unique and original Soho cafe. Amazing patisserie, busy but worth it to support an independent cafe that has managed to survive the coffee chains. The almond croissants were huge and yummy, the quiche tasty, all baked there.
M.
Great service and good cheesecakes
M. C.
Love a good old family business! Its feel exactly like going to your favorite aunt home.
Great cakes and scones!

Next level pasties and cakes – a soho institution!!! 🥐

Friendly, tasty. I’ve ordered a milk feuilles ( I call it Napoleon not sure if it’s correct?) take away. It’s fruity, creamy and crispy.

highly recommend cheesecake and scone. you never go wrong with maison bertaux cuz the quality is top notch with reasonable price. might be very hard to find sittings though
S. W.
First visit since lockdown and as lovely as ever! Warm service. Terrific coffee. Great range of cakes but I never look past the scones...
S. K.
Again I love my afternoon tea places. But please listen, I’m not your going enemy, I’d like to have the best time ever! I came in and a warm “hello” whoop! When I order don’t make as if I’m asking for your kidney. Overall happy and would recommend. Cheery staff please.
F. T.
Cakes and Tea are great but it's a bit pokey and stuffed with Instagram models.
No word of a lie, saw a lady buy 3 cakes, take a bunch of selfies and pictures, take one bite and then walk out...
Worth it for the people watching perhaps!
Y. H.
The moment we went in the shop, was stunning by all the lovely and delicious-looking cakes, all the cakes were organized sitting on the plates, in front of window, couldn't wait for my first bite and eager to try all of them.
The front staff greeted us with a big smile and warm welcome, and said happy birthday to me (it was my Bday😀).
I ordered a cheese cake, that was the best in London for sure, you could taste the strong cheese and with peach, just a perfect match, another best thing about it is not too sweet.😍
Earl Grey tea was great too, was my cuppa tea indeed! not too strong and not too light, just perfect.😀
Another staff, name should be Chris, sang a Bday song for me and gave me a surprise that night, that was very sweet and made a perfect ending of my day😁
Thank you for the magic you made.
Definitely will go back again soon😍
E. F.
My favourite tea room in London. The coffe here is very good and cakes and croissants are just amazing.
It's not cheap, but it's definitely worthy because the quality is high
J.
The most wonderful cake shop! Staff are friendly, cakes are delicious!
m. m.
This store is famous for its cheese cake so my friend ordered one. The texture of cheesecake is more jelly-like, and not rich flavored, slightly disappointed. I won’t say they sell delicate desserts.
M. C.
Love a good old family business! Its feel exactly like going to your favorite aunt home.
Great cakes and scones!

Amazing cakes and tea, also staff where really friendly and helpfull. Definitely don't miss this quaint little french patisserie.

Friendly, tasty. I’ve ordered a milk feuilles ( I call it Napoleon not sure if it’s correct?) take away. It’s fruity, creamy and crispy.
j. w.
I’ve had a hankering for traditional Parisian jambon buerre. It’s just ham and butter in a fresh baguette. They didn’t have any, so I left with an amazing croissant
A.
Very good home made pastries and cakes selection in a traditional historical building. One of the best chesecake in London!
F. W.
No doubt the bet scone in town, the cream is soooo nice, make sure you put a lot cream and jam in!
Small and cozy Cafe with love and happiness.
M. Ó.
Oh my GOODNESS!!! This place is NOT for the diet conscious, but it is paradise for the palate when you're craving sweets that are not cloyingly sugary. Hands down, my favorite place to go for anything sweet and baked when in London. And of course, you'll also be able to enjoy a fine cup of tea or a savory cup of coffee. HIGHLY recommended.
C.
Spent a very enjoyable time here. Croissant are beasts! Lovely staff, very homely feeling.
J. F.
Tea house open until late with an interesting decor and tasty pastries. Quite small but has an excellent atmosphere with old books, theatre masks and statues packed against the walls. Really enjoyed our visit.
a. L.
We love this treasure of a gem always made welcome the cakes are awesome and the tea is traditional by the pot can highly recommend
V. V.
Lovely place with a wide range of pastries to choose from. Berry cheese cake and earl grey tea is a must try
A. C.
Always amazing experience. Good cup of tea with delicious cakes :). What more could one ask for on a sunny afternoon
D. P.
Amazing cakes and snacks. 10/10 would recommend and stop by anytime I’m the area. Their prices are great as well.
M. I.
Great cake shop, very good coffee and delicious cakes and pastries. It was packed but it was worth it
W. H.
Really nice granny and warm decoration. Delicious cake/scone/tarts and various tea. Highly recommend!
C. S.
Great scones, but that's not the best part: came here with a friend who was celebrating her birthday and the lady inside went the extra mile to find a candle for her to blow. She couldn't find it at first and we were happy enough to enjoy our delicious scones and our tea. 15 minutes later she came out with a complimentary pastry and a candle on top. We really felt pampered!
R. L.
Quirky, quaint, long-established tea shop in the heart of London. Like something from another age. The cakes are divine and the tea excellent.
C. J. (.
Small pleasant place with some delicious cakes and tea on offer. The styling of the place is a little strange but I think it has a bit of a quirky atmosphere.

F. K.
A very good place for a desserts and a cup of tea or coffee. Cakes are super delicious. I was here in 2011 and it’s still the best cheese cake I have ever tried since!
D. M. A.
Very small cake shop, and filled with customers so almost no space to eat. Tried some merengue cake, it was alright.
g. b.
Another popular place when visting London. Perfect for a coffee and cake. The decor is brilliantly original. Never change.
A. W.
Best cakes we've eaten! Friendly service and lovely tea too.
N. N.
One of my favourite places to be in London. Quaint space with wonderful pastries and desserts for tea time. It’s a little tight in space but I guess that’s what makes it feel so homey.
R.
one of the best cheesecakes in the city- taste homely and handmade :)
N. M.
Maison Bertaux’s is a tiny French patisserie with truly English Tea spirit. Its an unpretentious tea room in Greek Street opened in 1871 by Monsieur Bertaux and was visited by all famous and bohemian people: Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, Alexandra McQueen, Vanessa and Virginia Wolf and many others - marks of are still present on some of the pottery used today. Freshly baked cakes, very liberal pricing, and welcoming and engaging atmosphere.
S. C.
One of the Soho originals. First rank choice of cakes. Cream cakes are a speciality. Service can be a bit frosty.
D.
Absolutely amazing butter croissant with a great service. A little gem in the city.
J. G.
Classic French patisserie, no frills, great cakes, excellent friendly service
C. B.
Amazing staff, really welcoming! I ate the best cheesecake of my life: after I ate a slice I went back and I ordered another one!
P.S.: if it is your birthday... Tell them! There will be a surprise!
A. V.
I always visit Maison Bertaux, my most favourite Tea Room. The cakes are fantastic! Simple and nice café with very lovely staff!

Great service and good cheesecakes

Great place for tea and amazing desserts smack down in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. The owner is a sweat older lady that in a classic British manner will help you choose the perfect item for your mood. Definitely worth a visit

Amazing. Authentic and more than tasty! I even got live latino music across the street which made a marvelous experience! Thanks also to the wonderful staff :-)

REALLY LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!! all my life my dad has been buying cakes from here for special occasions, and they're SO FRICKIN GOOD!!!!!!!!! im thrilled that they're still holding up well as a business, even with corona and all. the crispy biscuit base on their fruit tarts nearly brought me to tears (tears of joy, i can assure you), and their skill at balancing flavours and texture for each of their pastries is truly something to behold!! love you guys and your food so much xoxo
S. R. M.
Really cute place! Cosy seating upstairs
N. K.
An honest and well established business who know how to make good, authentic French desserts. Always delicious.
P. R.
What can you say other than it's Fabulous. Fabulous pastries and the ham & cheese croissant is sublime...You don't better than this..It's totally unique and wonderfully camp.x
S. K.
Lovely place serving great pots if tea. Cake isn't bad either...
C.
Cozy tea place
They always serve many selections of cakes and tea 🫖
M. F.
Reaaally good pastries! Best pain au chocolat you can find in London! Nice, polite staff and peculiar atmosphere. I would recommend to get there early and enjoy the pastries when they're still warm.
G.
It's one of the very few last, authentic cafe's/pubs/restaurant places left in Soho. Been there for around last 60 years and hasn't change much. Owners often still serve coffee with cake themselves. It's not cheap anymore, prices are rising unfortunately, like everywhere in Central London, esp. after current covid closures, however, this place has unique atmosphere and because it's on side street, you often find place outside, whereas in Old Compton Street all places are gonna be constantly occupied. So in bustling Soho you can actually sit there on sunny day, have a coffee and watch life go by. Great spot for people watching and occasionally you can spot some celebrities heading into nearby clubs.
A. E.
We stumbled on Masion Bertaux while staying in the neighborhood and treated ourselves to breakfast several times. We didn’t find better croissants any where in Paris and loved the staff at Masion Bertaux - they treated us like locals.
J. S.
Charming cafe. This was a Derek Jarman haunt. Decent cakes and drinks. Quiet undecorated 2nd floor space with gallery. I'd come here again.
A. J.
I had a super nice latte and the apple cake. Then as they were so good, I went for a scone too. The best tea room and cakes you'll find in London! Very nice staff too :-)

BACK WITH A BANG AFTER THE LOCKDOWN
Sat 5 June at 09H30 was my first return since September 2020. Fellow afficionados of this venerable institution should know that it is fully open for business again. My coffee was good & strong with really fresh croissants. Seating is indoors or at tables on the pavement, with good stimulating conversation, as always, with fellow customers.
S. M.
I love this place! On each of my London visits I'm coming here enjoying a nice cake ... for already over 10 years!
S.
So quaint. Such character. So lovely!
O. ..
Very fancy place in a popular tourist area. Could be tricky to get a seat. Great choice of pastries and cakes, not all made on the day though.
R.
This is place is always lovely - I have been a couple of times - very tasty and delicious cakes - Would recommend to anyone dropping by
N. U.
This place is so good! I cannot tell you how much I enjoy the fruit custard tarts. I'm not much of a sweet tooth, but when I came here I think I had 4 or 5 fruit tarts. It was basically my dinner. They were so good. The bakery shop is really cute too. The staff are funny and accommodating. I also like coming here to work and relax. This place is really popular though. They often have a line going out the door, so if you want some peace and quiet try to come when they're not so busy. The line does move quickly though which is nice. Don't forget to visit upstairs too. There's additional seating there.
K. J. T.
I am so happy with the Black Forest cake I've ordered from them for my boyfriend's birthday. It was very tasty and beautifully decorated. Will recommend them ❤️❤️❤️
s. p.
Lovely cafe, amazing cake, nice afternoon tea choice
J. P.
Even if you don’t have time for sit-down tea in this Soho staple (first opening in 1871), getting a pastry on the go is a must. There’s no better pâtisserie in London, and the lovely staff will be more than willing to guide you toward the perfect treat for any occasion.
J. R.
Fantastic! As busy, packed, and hectic as this place is, this was one of our favorite experiences in London. This is one of those places that seems so busy it would be impossible to find a seat, but even though they barely had any room, they were very welcoming to my family of four and made it all work. Cakes, scones and tea were truly exceptional. Staff were a bit off-putting up front, but once you see the quality of their craft and efficiency with which they deliver it, you understand why. Will certainly come again and recommend to all.
F. W.
Cute place, always like to hangout here after dinner. Love the non-chain vibe here.
H. W.
Best cheese cake in town!👍👍👍the cheese is just melt in your 👄 mouth, the texture is rich & creamy! Love it so so much 😍
T. L. (.
Taste quite traditional? But good.
There is a seating area and a small terrace which makes it quite comfortable dinning in.
K. R.
Very nice place, the cakes are amazingly tasty!!
A. I.
Very tasty desserts! Cozy place for a rainy day in London.
Y.
Came here twice during my trip. Love the scones here. Better than Fortnum & Mason’s.
A. Á.
The place is tiny but the cakes and pastries definitely deserve the visit. I had a plain scone that was absolutely delicious. Even though they had the first floor booked for a party an hour after we arrived, they allowed us to sit there, which was very nice of them. The place is rather random, the decoration is quite quirky too but definitely a good place to stop and have a tea.
J. K.
I love this place so much, and of course one of my fav place in London since I moved to London. All cakes are very delicious and fresh, all staffs are so friendly. Cappuccino doesn’t need any word just perfect ❤️
n. s.
Old style french tea room with fantastic cakes.
T. V.
Wonderful cakes and great tea! Quirky tea shop in Soho, Greek street. Love their cakes - the cheesecake was so spectacular! Great shabby chic feel & very quaint. Loved it and have been many times when in London. Staff always helpful. Highly recommended!
E.
“Best cheesecake in the world. I flew in from Colorado for this.” Said a guest. And agreed, delicious cakes and tea!
N. V.
Had a takeaway custard eclair and cherry danish. Soo good!
S. D. P.
The best cakes in London, the most delicious teas and tasty coffee. The perfect place to spend an afternoon in the city.
B. H.
One of my best friends went here while on his honeymoon back in December. He suggested I go here the moment I mentioned I'd be going to London. He said it was better than any bakery he'd eaten in Paris. While I haven't been to Paris, I can honestly say this was the best croissant I'd ever had. Super flaky and you could taste the butter with every bite. Yum! Now, I'm going to be recommending this place, too, to everyone I know!
N. K.
They were so kind tp us and the tea tasted reallyyyy good
N. A. N.
We had 3 very good pastries there and most of all I really want to thank the staff. I forgot my handbag there, with my keys, credit cards...i went back to France thinking I would never find my bag but on Monday, the staff called me and said they found it and were keeping it until a friend could come and pick it up. I couldn't thank them enough. I really appreciate their help ! And they have amazing pastries :D
S. P.
My favorite coffee shop, cake & scone place. Also excellent croissants!
R. F.
Best place in London for English tea and dessert.
A. T.
Never tried this place until recently even though I have been hanging around Soho for decades!! The desserts are amazing. There is a wide selection and most importantly, it is the type of traditional desserts that your grandma would make. This place has character and it a nice change from the expensive chains that aren't nearly as good as this place. So good. I will return very soon. Highly recommended.
E. L.
Large choice of cakes freshly baked in this wonderful 150year old institution
M. R.
You won’t get much change out of a tenner for tea and cake. But it will be delicious and you’ll enjoy the atmosphere, service and charm of the establishment. Long live Maison Bertaux
ע. נ.
Very good quality food and nice coffee as well. The atmosphere inside the cafe is nice, but it is a bit weird that people/tourists come and take photos with the place (did not bother me that much). The cost for two different croissant, two (unknown named) pastries, two cups of coffee, and one cup of tea was 26£.
G. R.
This place is a must! Their pâtisseries are just delicious and staff is extremely welcoming!
I've had a pretty good cup of tea along with my hazelnut cream puff and ended up paying something around £8 for the whole.
Really looking forward to going back.
C. W.
It's an experience! The place is clean, the food excellent and service very good but the interior is more shabby than chic. The windows upstairs kept blowing wide open, as there doesn't appear to be any catches, so the place was freezing. The toilet facilities were grim and the narrow winding stair case could prove treacherous. We found it hard to believe that Health & Safety allowed the single bar electric wall heater.

Wonderful little patisserie, delicious cakes and gorgeous atmosphere. However, this lovely café gets extremely busy. Well worth a visit, but choose your time carefully.
I visited on a Saturday afternoon at around 16:30 and the staff were rushed of their feet with queues out of the door. The cakes I bought were delicious though, (hot cross buns and a scone!) so well worth queuing! Just be prepared...
S. W.
I don't think it would be unfair to compare the service here to Fawlty Towers with a surly guy at the till unenthusiastically taking orders and a chaotic waiter kicking open the door in the seating area next door and offering you the wrong cakes. It took 15 minutes to be given the two pieces of cake that had been plated in front of us as we paid before we were sent to sit in the crowded space next door, but the cakes were very tasty and so entirely worth the wait. Perhaps the slightly eccentric ordering system and run down appearance are part of this place's quirky charm?
H. G.
Cake selection great (could do with signage so you know what they are though!) and we enjoyed a lovely ice tea and cafe latte. However, staff were very informal which felt a little unprofessional and I can see how others take it as rudeness. Also expected a French style based on the name but it is very British with eccentric decoration everywhere. Good for a unique cafe experience just the once

Amazing cakes in an old soho institution
H. E.
Just found by chance. Quirky seating arrangements but this patisserie is in a league of its own. The cakes were beyond compare. My chocolate mousse on choux pastry with fresh fruit and brittle glaze tasted even better than it looked. I would have offered a photo but it was consumed with such haste and gusto! The coffee was superb too, but served in the smallest cups (quick to go cold), a more generous serving would have achieved perfection!
K. T.
What a fab find! Bloody lovely coffee and cake with fabulous staff!
S. F.
This is my favourite place in London for its vintage and continental atmosphere and sometimes creepy look and despite pastries and cakes not being so great as everyone says or at least way too expensive for their quality. But being an institution in London I still love going to Maison Bertaux and prefer it to other places where food is better and better value for money.
However, what really upsets me is that the shop assistants keep changing the time of closure on Saturday nights - the place should close at 10:30pm (the owner even allows you in until 11pm) but those evenings when the owner is not around shop assistants turn you away at 9:55pm saying they're closing in five. Yesterday evening we were turned away on the excuse that they were closing at 10pm because they were not busy and they didn't have much cakes left while there were still plenty of options in the window! Also, of course you are not busy if you keep turning customers away! I would recommend the owner keeps a close eye on her employees!
J. B.
Lovely place, good coffee and tasty French pastry!
A. I.
This is a historical corner of London, it looks like you fly a few years back. I go there often as I love the whole experience.
There you'll find beautifully presented cakes and great choice of herbal teas. Friendly and quirky staff. Quirky crowd no matter what vice. Love it.
J. W. S.
A very beautiful and nice tea house that got hidden away from the big crowd of Soho. Came here to get a small rest with a nice Mint Tea.
It was real mint tea leaves, which is amazing! Nice setting and good to visit. Haven’t got to try their pastries and would drop by again some time later for it!
And the attendants are really amazing! Friendly and filled with energy! 👍🏻

This lovely cafe has a very strange set up! it is split across to shops that were not connected.
Logistics-wise, the cafe didn't really work for me because we ordered from one shop then had to find seats in the other shop and our food was delivered by the staff after they have found us on the other side.
However, the desserts were lovely and very generous in portions. They had a nice range of cakes and pastries available which made it difficult for me to choose as they all looked so lovely! This place definitely satisfied my sweet tooth. I can't wait to go back again to try something else. The staff were really lovely but I feel bad for them to have to explain to all the customers that they have to order here, then go there and come back here to pay later etc etc.

Maison Bertaux is THE go to patisserie in Soho . They bake all their patisserie onsite with their own patissiers. They're excellent - faultless. Not too sweet either .
The actual premises are a gem - the decor harks back 50 or more years. It's never changed in all that time . It's absolutely charming as are all the staff even when they're busy and under pressure.
Thinking of spending north of £50 per head on tea in a central London hotel? Forget it - for less than a fifth of this price you can have a much better tea in a real establishment.
B. A.
I almost don't want to recommend this treasure. One of the last remaining independent tea houses in London - a history running back to the 1850s. Laden with personality, run by an actress - the whole place is idiosyncrasy personified. My personal best cheesecake (not the baked kind).
B. C.
My favourite place in London.
If I was to be asked what my favourite place in London is I would say Maison Bertaux. I have been coming here for 40 year and I love it. The croissants are great especially the ham and cheese. The cakes are delicious, Mille Feuille aux fraises, Gateau St Honore, Mont Blanc, tartelettes galore and wonderful eclairs. I am as near to heaven as I can imagine. Everything made on the premises. The team Tania, Gertie, Metin and Michelle are wonderful. Michele is actually a national treasure.
C. S.
An absolute gem. Beautiful tea room, selling delicious cakes and pastries. Unique environment with hidden treasures from a range musical and theatrical eras. Owners and staff are charming. Great value for money, glad I accidentally stumbled across it on a snowy day in London.
S. G.
I love it here. The staff are characterful and welcoming. The cakes are gorgeous and the coffee is just right. I also love how late it stays open, and that you can just pop in after a show, or if you don’t like the pudding menu in whatever trendy Soho restaurant you’re in. A rare glimpse of Soho’s former glory, surviving in a modernising, trend following, and cleansed new Soho.
M. S.
Always a joy. The cakes are devine. An institution.
A. S.
Unique place with wonderful patisserie and equally wonderful (& eccentric) staff. Gets busy, so be prepared for a short wait - cards are accepted but I've found its quicker if you've got cash. Have also seen many a celebrity pop in here for cake.
S. Y. T.
Lovely cafe serving good cakes, warm service.
T. P.
Lovely staff. Amazing cakes.
k.
I love the shabbiness of this place. .brings back nostalgic memories. But in terms of tea & cakes is definitely living off its past glory... cakes are no longer pretty, tea is quite bitter & service ranges from good to downright rude in the same sitting (the staff & management had changed) & expensive (£6 for not a very pretty cake)... would be nice if the new management did something to improve
W. K.
Amazingggg authentic French pastries! Definitely try the tart/cakes. Almond croissant is one of the most expensive I’ve had, but well worth as it’s huge & filled with fresh ground almonds. Tables are very close together and can be noisy at busy times, but if you don’t mind, great place for a sweet treat!
R. C.
Assure to experience high quality pastries along with an amazing customer service. Last year ,only because of them I was able to present my fiance a memory for life. The chocolate mousse cake was an absolute delight & the effort they put behind getting it delivered by a suggested time frame , has put their customer service bar at a very high range. I will always count on them for my future pastry needs & will highly recommend them to my friends /relatives in London. Keep up the good work.
安.
sweets ,cake, delicious good atmosphere for tea time
A. A. T.
Great looking, local patisserie with selection of pastries and cakes. Interior is very authentic looking and cosy. Eclair wasn't too good, given that it was made with whipped cream instead of classic eclair filling. But the cheesecakes are worth a try. Overall, a good alternative to contemporary cafes in Soho for a quick break.
T. C.
A lovely French cafe in Soho. One of the oldest in London, with a cute hodgepodge decor. Delicious selection of pastries and very friendly staff. Great place to go for an afternoon tea.
W.
Wonderful atmosphere, very friendly staff, a wide variety of teas and delicious cakes. Downstairs you can enjoy your tea surrounded by the fantastic and imaginative artwork of Noel Fielding. My favourite cafe in all of London
N. U.
This place is so good! I cannot tell you how much I enjoy the fruit custard tarts. I'm not much of a sweet tooth, but when I came here I think I had 4 or 5 fruit tarts. It was basically my dinner. They were so good. The bakery shop is …
J. K.
I love this place so much, and of course one of my fav place in London since I moved to London. All cakes are very delicious and fresh, all staffs are so friendly. Cappuccino doesn’t need any word just perfect ❤️
M. D.
Welcoming and unique cakes made daily upstairs so super fresh
A. R.
Wonderful place! So much tradition and character!
S. D.
Love this little gem been coming here for years ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lovely place. Delicious scones
M. U.
Lovely cakes and very friendly staff
z. p.
Cheesecake is so soft and delicious
R. A.
Everything was perfect. Cheese croissant was amazing
A. D.
Tasty cake and tea
A. B. (.
It's hard to find a cafe that serves good quality loose leaf tea, but this is the one! Add a fresh fruit scone with clotted cream and proper conserve (not a jam!) and you get one of the best cream tea I've ever had.
F. C.
A bit underwhelming I'm afraid. I had heard only good things about this place and I would have expected something better. The place itself is a bit rustic, which I would not mind, but in a alightly messy way. My cake tasted good but was clearly 1 or 2 days old which for that location and price I don't think is acceptable.
S. W.
Maison Bertaux is a wonderful contrast to the chain coffee shops. It's an independent patisserie, founded in 1870, that bakes all its own cakes and pastries. Drop in for coffee and cake. I highly recommend the croissant with melted ham and cheese. Please seek it out, it deserves support.
M. v. d. W.
Love the place. Like to go there for an afternoon and they have great pastries and coffee.
s. a.
Totally loved the pastry and cakes there-why did no one tell me about all these years gone!. The cakes not only looked beautiful they tasted amazing-one of the few places where the cream used had a great flavour. The owners were charming and slightly quirky. I would say the place could do with a good lick of pain but that could be my OCD! Can't wait to take my freinds!
S. D.
A slice of old Soho, served up with a piping hot cuppa and some frilly French fancies. This place is lovely, and an antidote to all the "classic" Soho boozy haunts such as the French House. Cakes sometimes look better than they taste, but they do look very beautiful indeed. As a side note, I really miss the shop that used to be downstairs - fashion heaven.
P. O.
Freshly baked desserts, great for tea time. Can be a little crowded. Be wary of pickpockets! The staff were kind enough to warn us about not leaving our phones/wallets on the table.
S. H.
Very petit and French! :-)
Never realised a crossiant could be so flaky and tasty!
Good for a wonderful French patisserie experience in the heart of London!
L. N.
A very eclectic clientele.. cakes are beautiful .. staff lovely.. good atmosphere playing golden oldies..interia decor needs a bit updating.
But the cakes and the service well make up for it.
Visiting from Newcastle.
A nice little find!!
S. K.
A proper patisserie. All cakes are made at premise (top floor). It's my main place to go for cake for past 12 years, cakes maybe simple but the flavours are perfectly balanced. Plus it's one of the few places which has been continuously open since 1880's.
E. M. T.
A favorite of mine, situated in the colorful, bustling streets of Soho. Established over a century ago, this quaint tea shop serves a wide selection of pastries, and has been cozy and comfortable every visit.
D.
Legendary patisserie, best in the UK. Almond croissants, dijon slice, the sublime gateau St Honore . St Honore is the French patron saint of pastry chefs .Tasty scones with jam and cream. Wine by the glass. Outside tables, tables upstairs. Been coming here for decades and as great as ever. Everything made on the premises. Love the mint tea. My family and friends adore this place.
D. G.
The best patisserie place in London. The chocolate éclairs are the best I've had.
y.
Desserts were amazing, especially the cheesecake, the reason why I gave it 5* star is the service from one of the staff members, an older lady who was so kind and funny, gave us some great suggestions. Hiighly recommend.
J. S.
The place to have a cake in London for me. If in doubt, try all. Charming staff and unique decor. Only chose the table while ordering at the counter. Do not ask for skinny decaf caramelito grande coffee as you will be sent off to Starbucks.
N. W.
Taste absolutely gorgeous😍 love them all!
J. C.
An absolute institution, the staff know all the stories behind Soho nights and busy mornings. Enjoy their sublime pastries and know that you're participating in a long chain of wonderful human interaction and historic comfort
N. G.
A Soho institution, this is one of the best places to sit down for a slice and a beverage. Everything I've ever had here has been good, but my personal recommendation is the Gateau St. Honoré, a perfect combination of vanilla and chocolate cream and flaky pastry, topped with a bonus profiterole (although you'll have to be quick as there's rarely any left after 4/5pm).
The staff are universally friendly and they provide table service (there's room upstairs as well as down), and if you visit during a quiet, mid-week afternoon, you might even get some genial conversation. Yes, the premises are rickety, slightly cramped and don't appear to have been redecorated for a while (misleading as they underwent a recent refurb) but that's an essential part of it's charm - and who cares when the cakes and pastries are that delicious?!
J. P.
Lovely cakes and pizza very tasty
L. D.
My favourite cheesse croissants and the best ones i have ever had! Lovely small place full of personality. The prices are a bit high though
..£4 for a takeaway croissant :(
A. B.
Lovely place, warmful people and nice pastries. We came for breakfast and we had scones with cream and jam, plus one slice of cheesecake. It was perfect ! Thank you very much !
E. J.
The cakes are pretty good, the street view incredible for people watching (if you can grab a table in there) and everything is reasonably priced. It's a little slice of quirky Paris without having to go further than Soho.
Hidden downstairs is a sweet little boutique selling a neat range of clothes for those a little more fashion adventurous. The staff are always friendly and happy to help, too. The only reason it's 3 stars is just due to how busy it gets, you have to really get there at the right time or it's overflowing with so many tourists and shopping bags, it's a little difficult to move around (or sometimes get into your seat) without bumping into someone.
B. M.
Wonderful to be there after a year and half beautiful cakes, croissants and company.
Y. C.
A great great place for a cup of homemade tea and a piece of handmade cheesecake. Very traditional British style! You will love the cheesecake, please try it
B. M.
Passed by here last week. How could I ever forget the coffee and cake and Bastille Day street theatre here one day back in the nineties when the lady owner? acted her socks off...and more..and did the best impression ever of the Delacroix 'Liberty Leading the People'. Good job it was a warm day. I looked through the window this week and, blow me, if that vision of liberty was not still there running the show. A little older but just as inspiring. Vive la France!
H. T.
The best pastry I've ever had! Such a lovely and friendly atmosphere, plus if you love tea they serve an amazing cup of English breakfast!
Can't wait to come again!!
A. D.
Fantastic cakes, the hazelnut cream chouix pastry is delicious. Slightly quirky and chaotic order, serve and paying arrangements. But I quess that adds to the charm
N. H.
Lovely atmosphere and delicious cakes. The place is full of different decorations and It feels like you are in an artistic French comedy. It's a bit expensive but not more then any other place in Soho. There is more space in the second floor if it feels to crowded.
H. D.
Whilst the decor is tired, especially upstairs, the patisserie is exceptional. Years ago, Bertaux was a cut above Valerie and now that has become a chain there is no comparison.
I don't get to London often, but Bertaux is a must visit place when I do. I wish I could come more often and I hope others do so this wonderful establishment is still here when I come again.
You could book tea at the Ritz and have the ambience plus rubbish food or you can go to Bertaux at a fraction of the cost and have the best patisserie.
B. S.
We enjoyed a wonderful croissant and coffee yesterday morning at the Maisonette Bertaux. This place is steeped in history, love it. Arthur, hope you got your coffee mojo back 👍😄
A. M.
Incredible tea room in the heart of Soho! Beautiful cakes😍
I. Y. H.
Luckily for my friend and I who were in line for 20 GBP Miss Saigon day tickets, Maison Bertaux was only a two minute walk away for us to take turns buying breakfast pastries. Almond croissants, sugar-glazed pretzels, fruit tarts, the choices go on. London's oldest French patisserie has been around since 1871 (that's 143 years!). Cakes, pastries and the rest are all baked upstairs. I noticed that the pink bunting and fairy lights I saw during my visit in March were absent but similar-looking childlike scribbles on the mirrors and the assortment of things on the piano remained. It is a charming little oddity in the midst of rowdy Soho pubs. Things may get a little busy in the evenings but at half past 9am on a weekday, the quaint patisserie was endearingly quiet save for the barely audible discussion about Wimbledon between two elderly men. Our server seemed a little inexperienced but he was very pleasant as was the woman supervising him. The pear pastry and chocolate truffle were delicious, although very sweet. I have heard that the almond pastries are the best but have yet to try them myself. I only wish I did not have to move away from Covent Garden and Soho.
M. L.
Charming, cramped and chaotic, but not really worth the price - £14 for two eclairs and teas is steep, and for that the eclairs should be piped and whipped custard (not cream) and firm, light pastry. That said, they were tasty. Having the shop and tea rooms separate also makes for an awkward setup.
G. H.
OMG What a find. Simple, lovely, home made croissants, cakes, scones and other lovely treats. Freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh coffee. Friendly staff and you can sit in or outside. Find it in Soho (just off Compton Street) and enjoy some indulgent treats. Definately worth a visit.
T. C.
Gorgeous coffee and available patisseries, huge croissants. Lovely location.
W. X.
The birthday cake I bought for my friend in this shop was delicious! The service of the old lady in the shop was very kind. She said the shop has been open for more than one hundred years and she was in the shop when she was 15 years old! I believe I will go again!
d.
The lady is really friendly, and the cake was super good
H. R.
It’s definitely different! If you’re looking for something new, shiny, upscale and polished, move on—this place is not for you. If however, you want to try something that feels real, and has its own lively history yes do give it a try. There’s something old school charm about this place and I don’t mean just the rustic atmosphere but the way things are run as well. They don’t take cards only cash (unless they’ve changed) and when I was short of cash I told the gentleman I would go get some money and would be leaving my purchase with them. He refused and said, “Nonsense! What are you going to do run away? Take it with you!” This mind you was on a very busy day so yes, there’s definitely this air of doing things traditionally, built on trust. Keep in mind if you’re a vegetarian or eat Halal and or Kosher, you might want to double check on the gelatin they use in some of their cakes.
l. l.
Delicious cakes and great coffee!
j. W.
It is some of the most traditional cake shop in the area, there are sitting upstairs too with toilet as well, beware stair a little narrow! Overall a good stop by after a long walk! Art works is everywhere on the wall
S. L.
Excellent service, great cakes and lovely tea. A must
M.
The place has a cosiness and an atmosphere I haven't experienced in a long time. The staff working here is extremely nice and polite, very attentive and kind. The couple of things we ordered were delicious and definitely worth the price. Would definitely recommend 💖
J. R.
Like Bar Italia, this iconic café needs to be kept a secret because I noticed they expanded into the next door shop, and although this might make commercial sense, it's messing with the beautifully delicate soul of the place. The same old stern but kind faces work there, and if you ask for an éclair but point at a hazelnut filled almond sandwich, you will be told off for not knowing you pastries from your patisseries.
S. A.
Love this cute hidden cafe in Soho, feel like you're in someone's house in a good way; service was a bit chaotic but loved it!! Very good pastries, definitely going back there soon
S. R.
A bit over-rated. The cakes are nice, not amazing, and therefore over-priced. Upstairs is a bit crazy looking, which is cool. However, everything looks like it's getting a bit old and messy rather than just looking it on purpose, if you know what I mean. The teapots could do with a proper clean too.
C. C.
Lovely place for tea lovers. Many options for desserts too...the staff was friendly and kind..the decoration could be a little better but it makes it up the fresh flowers they have in every table..
A.
Nothing was special, just crowded with a bunch of Koreans. I don’t even know why.
G. H.
Not sure what is more delightful the family or the food. The cakes are to wonderful, a great way to experience a little slice of France in London. Why are you still reading this...just go there !
c. m.
Very enjoyable and cosy.
The guy who served us was very attentive and kind.....good coffee too :)
N. S.
Amazing mille-feuille - absolutely delicious!
They unfortunately serve green tea with freshly boiled water - too hot and so it’s a bit astringent and bitter. Unfortunately most tea places do this in London. Annoying that none of them know how to serve such a popular drink!
But nevertheless it’s a charming and cosy place - if slightly cramped. Go there for the tea time cake.
A. B.
Maison Bertaux has an exotic name but the place is pokey and could do with a lick of paint. It is well frequented by those who are in the know. It is located near Chinatown in the theater district. The coffees and teas are good the patisserie not exactly the best in London is probably the best in theatre land.
M. R.
This hotel is decent value (in an expensive city) and nice and simple, clean and comfy. The staff are great - very helpful and human. (Sometimes the restaurant closes by surprise though - look out for that one).
C. S.
I love its atmosphere. A must see for patisserie lovers. The old house is also unique, you feel like in the early 1900, especially in the toilet.
F. F.
Little lovely place for tea and freshly made tarts! It can be a bit tricky sometimes to find the place to sit but it worth the wait!
L. G.
Fabulous cakes and all people from that place are very lovely people! The lady who is the boss I think she is too cold with them is to severe:)
m. B.
Tiny place, lovely fresh cakes, good coffee. Can be hard to get a seat or to see what to choose, as so busy and small. Worth a visit for a sweet treat
M. L.
Nice place to chill and have a tea and also satisfy your sweet tooth. Interesting that the buildings are separated, one building is just for seating and they bring the cakes in from the other -makes for a cosy chilled eating area
L. S.
My favourite scones in the city! We have been served by Alex and the service was absolutely brilliant. Would definitely go back.
J. R.
Great baked cheesecake, nice cosy vibe reminds me of the old school mom & pop master patissiers cafes in France. Really refreshingly unpretentious. Worth a stop in the middle of Soho's hustle & bustle.
L. N.
Lovely cakes, quirky little french patisserie tucked away in Greek st. Reasonable prices for Central London, comparable to Costa etc. Our 2nd visit.
A. A.
The best place in London for eclairs!
D. P.
Baked fruit cheesecake, vanilla cheesecake with cherry chocolate ganache, chocolate gateaux and a nice English breakfast to wash it all down.
Super friendly. efficient and knowledgable staff.
Amazingly decorated.
Go visit, even if it's just for a cuppa.
S. L.
Maison Bertaux has been part of my life and that of my husband's for years and I'm so so glad it has been. Their rum baba and a nice pot of cinnamon tea while my fella eats his Mont Blanc and macchiato is food for my soul as well as my stomach. The cakes are gorgeous needless to say, but more than that, it is the charm and character of both the place and its staff that have kept us coming back over the years.
The older French man who is often working there gets mixed reviews but what he does is in fact respond in kind; if you are polite and civilised then he will be too and doubly so. If you barge in and start taking up too much space with your noisy group and then try to jump the queue before asking for a skinny cappuccino, he'll tell you to piss off to Starbucks. Hooray for him sez I.
If this place ever goes, I think I would actually cry. I have so many happy memories tied up in the place. I hope to keep building them for as long as possible.
P.s. I don't know who does the hiring but the waiters for some reason are always extremely handsome but slightly quirky young men. Bit like the place to be honest.
B. E.
Popped in to buy an almond filled croissant. Very tasty, but the MOST expensive croissant I've ever bought. £4 for a takeaway croissant doesn't make this place a daily stop for me!
I. L.
I always finish my London trip here.
The dated decor makes its character.
l. t.
A little rickety cafe in the midst of busy Soho. Cakes and coffee are lovely, but it is tiny so not one for big groups and the toilets are less than pretty. But I still love it for a people watch on a sunny day, a bit chilly on cold days.
C. B.
Lovely place, such a nice and calm atmosphere, lovely lemon torte and coffee was delicious! Nice and warm rest after a rainy, cold day! Highly recommend!
C. M.
A lovely place in Soho to have a cup of tea and a piece of cake or anything sweet you can imagine. Love special in winter upstairs where you can seat and have a good and long chat with your friend/s. For me they do the best chocolat clairs in London... and also a nice earl grey tea xxx
f. A.
Very Nice people and welcoming! The strawberries cakes was amazing!!!! Definitely I recommend this place
M. D.
Beautiful pastries. Unusual and exceptional.
R. R.
Delicious! Quaint & proper place! Have the raspberry thingy! ;)
o. p.
I have been coming here for almost 15 years.
Best cakes in London, quirky decor and lovely service.
I recommend this place wholeheartedly.
A. G. (.
One that has survived, why? Best bakes and bake selection in town, arguably, all baked fresh onsite! Boho in true sense of the word, as in opposite to wannabe squeaky clean eclectic, very very cosy; don't go the weekend unless you don't mind sharing your teeny table with coats'n scarves'n other peoples bits flopping over your plates whilst queuing. There's upstairs though and next door. Hence the 4 ⭐. For the say over 35's it's a trip to 'back in time for tea' the continental way.
B. A.
Charming French café with a lot of history. Amazing patisserie and the coffee is great. Sitting outside, summer or winter, gives you the best chance of watching people of Soho walk past.
s. m.
Loved everything about this place from the classic decor, to the welcoming atmosphere from the staff to the amazing tea and cakes. It really is a must if you are in the area.
C. Y.
Great, fresh made scones and delicious tea. The owner is such a character too! So sweet and funny!!
C. S.
Everything I've tried has been delicious! Best frangipanes and almond croissants in London. However, customer service is not great and it is expensive for what it is.
I. W.
Love the cheesecake, most comfortable dessert that puts a smile on my face.
N. C.
They get the greatest sweets in London 🥰
H. A.
Delicious freshly baked. Always crowded and hard for sitting in
V. C.
Nice place, delicious bakery
N. W.
Brilliant cakes highly recommended
S. m.
perfect! delicious cake, lovely coffee and friendly staff.
A. H.
Quaint little French patisserie serving delicious cakes and tea. The staff is great and accommodating, and they attract a lot of French nationals which adds more charm to the place.
M. C.
Lovely cheesecake, love it very much! A small place to rest and have a cake, quite a lot of cake choices and the decorations inside is nice as well.
L. P.
Great and all the staffs were very friendly and attentive. Good and sweet bread food to experience. I like their coffee too, it is very delicious and interesting. Nice place :)
J. S.
There is a good selection of cakes and pastries, which goes down well with a coffee or tea of your choice. The hosts are super friendly.
t. p.
Undoubtedly the best pattiserie in London.
S. T.
My favourite bakery while I lived in London, quirky, cosy and friendly with tasty scones served with generous lashings of clotted cream and jam.
A. K.
Amazing muffins, croissants, cupcakes, etc.! Everything in here tastes like heaven! Also, the atmosphere is cozy and pleasant…it’s just a nice place to spend your afternoon with family or friends.
A. K.
Chaotic, characterful café in the heart of Soho run by two eccentric and entertaining English sisters. Cakes, pastries and savouries baked on site daily - worth the expense. Gallery and theatrical events. Media, celebrity, trendy, tourist and local clientèle. Welcoming icon of London life, since 1871.
K. M.
Love place that serves tea and cake until late. Staff are super friendly and the cakes delicious. It needs a lick of paint though!
D. J.
Best cake ever.
M. C.
The best scones I’ve ate.
M.
Make your own tea time. Don't pay these ludicrous prices per person at a tea shop. Go here! Get yourself a pastry or slice of cake and a pot of tea. Boom! Done!
E. F.
My favourite place in London. Eccentric, idiosyncratic, anachronistic, utterly delightful. There are few things as wonderful as the strawberry tarts from Maison Bertaux.
T. S. L.
When ordering tea, coffee and cake in London’s oldest patisserie, Maison Bertaux, be prepared to take a step back in time to a place free from chaotic city life.
This tea-room gem, reminiscent of an Aladdin’s cave of freshly baked treats, is undoubtedly one of TSL’s favourite places to head to when we’ve got a sweet tooth. We love the charm of the higgledy-piddledy décor and that, no matter the time of day, the place can befit all moods; mornings are for quiet thinking time while afternoons lend to buzzy nattering...
To find more unique and independent places why not visit the Twenty Something London website!
A. S.
The cakes and the cafe are stunning, but Maison Bertaux is let down by mopey staff. It's also very much on the cramped side, so don't go if you'd like a quiet chat.
E. P.
Delicious cinnamon roll and blue lady tea!
B. M.
Pastries and cakes are priced comparably to other high-quality places (if not even a bit cheaper than the posh bistro/restaurant/bars).
Recommended.
y. l.
Ordered a cheese cake and a fruit cake. Best!

It's my favourite place in soho for desserts. Really good and fresh cakes. Chilled staf f and relaxed music makes you want to sit down and have a coffee.
G. S.
Best cakes in central London. Vintage and decadent as the cakes and pastries that serves. A London different that the synthetic chains
M. R.
One of my favourites places in London for coffee and a treat. As always staff very nice. Tables outside are a plus
A. D.
Wonderful tea and cakes in the middle of Soho. A beautifully ramshackle venue on three floors with narrow winding stairs. Order and pay as you enter then there is table service. Try to go when not busy as otherwise the service is extremely slow!
C. H.
Shabby-chic and somewhat expensive (£7.70 for green tea and gateaux st honored, £4.70 for a mont blanc) but at least the pastries are pretty good at this French bakery and cafe.
B. L.
Best patisserie in town. Baking on the premises since 1871! Quirkiest little place in town.. resisting chains which are taking over the city.
c. p.
Lovely place. Delicious scones
C. R.
Delicious cakes and good coffee with places to sit outside when others are busy.
F. E.
Beautiful pastries all handmade on site, friendly and helpful staff. Will definitely be back
W. L.
Great little small shop for French patisseries in Soho. Will definitely be back for more cakes. They're delicious!
J. C.
The best patisserie in London !
The cakes just melt in your mouth ♡ !
I just recommend to anyone who loves amazing french patisserie.
E. S.
Very small quaint French patisserie.....pleasant staff... ..cakes were beautifully presented...but the taste of them were nothing to write home about

Lovely cakes and very friendly staff

My must visit tea House every time I'm in the west end. This family run shop is incredible. Great service and amazing pies!
E. S.
The atmosphere there is great, the staff is welcoming and the offered drinks are tasty. I recommend this place without hesitation. You can find me there every Friday with my best friend Rebecca.
Y. L.
Second time to visit this place. The original flavour cheesecake is always my favourite, very creamy and not that sweet.
R. J.
Maison Bertaux is a fixture in Soho. Long may it remain unhassled by Westminster Council and its regulations. It's a gastronomic delight. The pastries are utterly superb. The service is, to say the very least, quirky and that's part of the charm.
D.
THE place for cake in London. No visit to the city should be complete without a visit. As a Londoner, I always take visitors here to experience the real cafe life.
L. W.
Best pastry and tea I've had in like ever 😍
P. C.
Always brilliant, great service. This place is unique, with a great history, and not part of any chain.
D. C.
Quite nice pain au chocolat, but slightly pricey I thought (£3.80)
E. M.
My favourite place. Cosy and amazing pastries ànf hot drinks! Fresh and big variety. Staff is friendly and nice!
M. H.
This place looks like a party happened last night and it fell into a bag of sugar to get over the hangover. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mad Hatter had attended the party either as the tea and cake served here is great. Unfortunately though his pals the White Rabbit and Alice probably didn't get in as this place is tiny.
C.
Best cake shop in London. Lots of choice. Reasonably priced. Quirky setting. Lovely, eccentric staff.
S. P.
Best eclair in London by far! Charming service and cosy interior. Would recommend for a coffee and a sweet treat!
J. H.

A. D.
The best! No doubt!

One of the very few original Soho destinations. An absolute must to visit and enjoy their tea and cakes.

Cozy tea and scone place in London
K. G.
One of the best places for tea and cake in central London!
Arrive, choose and be seated! Awesome selection of pastries and tea!!
許.
The scone itself is good. But the service is poor. When I entered the store, nobody reacted to that until I requested the order. :(
I. T.
Excellent scones and tarts, be sure to get there by early afternoon if you want to get the full selection of pastries.
陈.
They provide really good cakes and tea! Anyone who wants to relax and enjoy a lovely cream tea can go to this cake shop.
E. B.
Super kind and quick service. Very delicious english breakfast tea and scones!
J. A.
Perfectly balanced atmosphere for a French tearoom.
Relaxed and unpretentious setting. Recommend the croissants.
T. T.
Adorable place! Had croissants and a slice of apricot tart which were both amazing, especially with a pot of green tea 😊
C. G.
Lovely tempting looking food, but sadly we were only there for a quick coffee ! We will be back for a meal. Very efficient & polite staff
O. L.
I really like the experience here. The tired decor, interesting service and exposition of cakes. They can not afford to anything but proper cake and tea.
N. D.
Lovely old tea room with delicious cakes and real tea leaves in a pot gets very busy but worth it.
M. R.
Amazing cheesecake, and very kind service from the owner! Definitely coming back!
A. C.
This place is amazing. It could probably do with a deep clean but the cakes are very good indeed
T. Z.
One of the nicer experiences in London actually. A cup of tea and a piece of cake, sitting outside watching people passing by. Will definitely come back while in the neighborhood.
J. S.
Tasty desserts and cute decor.
W.
Friendly and warm feeling radiate from the shop. History with soho truly spiced up the lovely freshly baked cakes l.
S. D.
I love Soho, I love sitting on the pavement with my paper and peoplewatching with a bit of cake and a pot of tea, Maison Bertaux is perfect for this as they provide you with a mammoth amount of tea, at first I winced at the 3 pounds price tag but I soon realised they'd provided me with a full pot of tea with extra hot water, enough for at least a full pint of tea and enough to see me through that crossword.
S.
Staff very kind. Cakes and scones very tasty. Very busy place in the weekend.
B. S.
Awesome cheese cake, recommend chocolate cheese cake, amazing taste. I almost come here every week!!!! I love this place fabulous!!!
z. m.
Traditional mediteranian cafe in the heart of Soho. Really cute and nice choices of desers and pastries. Unfortunately the staff seems to lack common sense at times...
R. I.
Old traditional french patisserie. Try the cheesecake, recipe hasn't changed since 1867.
I. L.
Shabby and chic French patisserie, well more shabby than chic, but cakes are really good!
E. S.
Amazing cheese croissants, infact you could order any item of food here safe in the knowledge it would be fantastic
P. Z.
Delicious french cakes!

Soooo cosy. Everything is yummy, only scones are a bit hard when they get warmed up.
P.
Best French pastrie at the core of London Town. Nice and cosy place to have a macciato.
M. W.
This place is pure magic. The cakes are to die for and the staff and owners are as delightful and sweet as the pastries they serve :D
A. F.
Quirky little place

Good tasting cakes but bit on the expensive side
R. N.
The staff are so friendly. It is really worth a visit.

Great eclairs! Amazing and lovely staff!

Withnail and I meets Jules et Jim. Bohemian; London and Parisian by all accounts. The wine is surprisingly good.
C. H.
Absolutely wonderful place! Very sweet and charming lady and staff. Delicious sweets and warm atmosphere. ❤
R. A.

c. c.
Great place: good coffee and amazing selection of delicious cakes and pastries. Fantastic staff
J.
The perfect place for a spot of trees and a pastry.
M. “. L.
An institution and rightly so. Meet a friend for coffee, or pop in after dinner for a pastry that is guaranteed to be better than what your restaurant offered.
S. T.
The absolute best cakes for a great price with loads of options. Service is good too
P. B.
Arguably, the best croissants in London. The almond croissants are particularly nice.
R. M.
Such a cute little patisserie..Michelle is absolutely wonderful.

The best patisserie I know of in London. Favourite of many in the #Soho crowd

Charming little cafe with decent eclairs. You are paying for history rather than taste.
