Reviews of The Spence Bakery
S. I.
Popular Stoke Newington café - always a queue at lunchtime, but definitely worth the wait. Excellent cakes as well as bread and savoury items. Helpful staff!
S. D.
If you miss genuine, good quality bread in London, visit this place. Definitely the best bread in the area, delicious croissants and cakes, finest quality coffee.
A. P.
Amazing local bakery! I always come here to buy sourdough bread and cakes. I tried different sourdough bread in Stoke Newington, and so far, Spence Bakery is the best. You often see the queue here, but it's worth waiting. All staffs are friendly, it's also quite handy to buy quick dairy stuff too - and they have Oatly!
T. C.
You will often see a long queue here, with good reason! It's an excellent local bakery, with a great selection of largely sweet treats. My recommendations are: Smoked Salmon Bagel, Carrot Cake, Vanilla or Orange Butter Biscuit, Gingerbread man, Chocolate Guinness Cake, and Iced Buns.
Bonus info: Wheelchair accessible, no steps. Dog-friendly. Covid precautions in place.
P.s. The queue goes down quickly, so it's worth the bother :-)
A. T.
Got a take away chorizo roll and chocolate swirl. Both were very tasty! Although I didn't buy one, the selection of bread loaves looked amazing.
P. R.
Really tasty breads and pastries! Go early though as as the quality tends to go down a bit as the day goes on
I. L.
Love this place. Great bread and cakes. The brioche Bread Butter pudding is back on form! Moist and tasty. Generous portion too.👍
Goes well with a coffee.
A. S.
Delicious pastries, nice staff, reasonably priced
G. S.
Nice bakery. Very good attention. The bakery is not very big, so customers have to line up on the street. A big variety of bread and pastries.
D. L.
Excellent bread, sandwiches and cakes. My favourite is their cheese scone. I just wish the queue was not so long, maybe an order and collect service?
F. T.
I only tried this bakery last Sunday. The rye bread and bagels were really good! I think is one of the few places left in Stoky that is reasonably priced. The best thing I got from them was the cheese scones, it was delicious and I will definitely come back to get more!
W. L.
Spicy Mushroom soba is a bad idea. The noodles are not suitable to cook this way. 🥲
N. M.
Here you can get the best bread, cake and so on..
Y. C.
I get the egg and bacon sandwich buns all the time, it's very good. They should now think about providing some sort of cover over the food.
I tried the sausage roll yesterday and remember why I don't usually get it. There was more pastry than the sausage meat and was a tad on the dry side. I expected better for £3 a roll to be honest.
E. G.
Bacon and egg bap: There is something about the mayonnaise. When I am hungover / need a pick me up, I go and get this. Then the world is alright.
f. s.
Lovely baked products. Their breakfast buns are delicious, as are their biscuits. Coffee is good too. Really nice and relaxed neighbourhood vibe, when it's sunny outside you can also sit outside to enjoy your food or coffee (they have a few tables). I agree with another reviewer on the minimum card spend policy, it's really outdated and super annoying.
A. A.
My favourite bakery in Stokey. Everything from the cakes, bread and sandwiches are delicious. Get there early, as there is always a queue, but the food is worth the wait
e. c.
A lovely little bakery and very close by.
They do make good bread and have some lovely food in there. Favs are the bacon and egg bagels. They are over priced at times depending on what your after but sometimes it is worth it. Due to covid they do have massive lines outside for this.
M. S.
I walk specifically to Stoke Newington to come to this bakery. Prices are very reasonable with very talented bakers. A roll of your choice and something sweet comes to around £5 which is an absolute bargain.
B. S.
Ahh their baking is amazing.. highly reccomend.
M. w.
Great Bakery with a fantastic selection of really well made breads.
They keep better than the wholefoods ones for sure - and taste better!
added bonus, they have amazing cakes too - try the Butter Brioche pudding, personal favorite.
R. C.
I absolutely adore this place, and make a bi weekly pilgrimage here for baked goods and good coffee. You have to get their before lunchtime on the weekend if you want any of the good loafs. It's perfect for a quick takeaway roll to eat on the go, and a loaf to take home. The bacon and egg seeded rolls are a must have. It's no frills, straightforward food, something that Stoke Newington now lacks with all the gentrified and overpriced cafes and restaurants that are more style over substance. The Sourdough loaf here is probably the best I've had in London, even so much that local cafes call it out on their menu, as they are proud to serve Spence. I can thoroughly recommend this place as the best bakery, with simple and straightforward bites to eat. It has a vibey, if sometimes overcrowded atmosphere.. But this is testament to its local popularity
P. H.
Brilliant bakery. The burger buns are the best I've ever had. The queue outside during COVID moves really quickly. The sourdoughs are all amazing too.
P. A.
Huge selection of bread to choose from, at reasonable prices. The cakes are excellent and the coffee is good, using Allpress beans. Best to get there before lunch otherwise most of the bread will be gone.
My only gripe is the focaccia - I’ve bought it twice this week and both times it was incredibly dry - we couldn’t finish it, seemed either over baked or stale.
S. H.
Queued to get some pastries and coffee: service was not very friendly and got visibly irritated when I added an additional item to the order. Products are all right, service is not worth the wait. Sticking to Dusty Knuckle next time!
a.
I love all the baked goods here, and such affordable prices. But even though they use one of my favourite coffee bean roasters, the staff aren't making as good coffees as they used to here. Get the coffees going again and it would be five stars every time!
G. R. M.
The pumpkin bundt will melt in your mouth. This place is absolutely superb.
L. M.
Bestest bakery around town! Love the orange. The people are supers n the pastry... Nom nom nom. Thankyou for such a delightful place. :))
S. K.
Love the bread, but hate the minimum cc purchase policy. I always buy multiple loaves of bread and minimum spend for cc doesn’t really affect me, but twice now I have bought my bread and realized I should buy some cookies, even though they knew I had just spent 10 pounds, they still make me buy extra stuff to meet the minimus spend.
B. T.
Oh dear I think I need to bake my own bread. I found the staff today very kurt when I queued at the wrong window, they were very disproving. I am not a mind reader , signs stating where you can pay and collect and collect only would be good, given the current circumstances. However I guess Spence have the Monopoly in Stokey so they can choose to ignore their customers;as things are a bit desperate at the moment and people will accept anything they are given, including bad service 😔
Katherine thank you for your reply, it shows willing . I have since gone back to Spence and the staff were more open to suggestions which was good , maybe it was a off day for your staff It happens. Looking forward to new signage.
T. T.
We are lucky to have them so close to home. A true gem of a bakery with friendly staff, a great selection of breads and baked goods, fine artisan bakers, and egg and cress sandwiches to die for!
A. L. P.
Love their eggs and cress buns! Perfect for a breakfast on the go while taking the dog for a walk!
Paired with a cappuccino and that's morning perfection in my world!
O. P.
Spence is our local bakery. Staff is very friendly. The baked goods, including the coffee. Annoying sometimes that they have a £5 minimum on using cards. On weekends it gets super busy.
L. H.
Such a great little joy buying delicious bread here, and today tried their coffee and chocolate brioche too - both excellent
A. S.
Moved to the area about a month ago and I cant stop myself from visiting. Best cakes I've had in quite a while.
R. B.
Very nice baked goods eg: bread, cakes and brioche rolls. Worth trying
C. B.
Such good bread! The queues on a Saturday are there for a reason: excellent product. I especially love the bagels; pumpkin bread; and olive and gruyere loaf! A good coffee too.
H. Y.
Been coming here for years and only for one item that i think is what they do best. The egg mayo bacon with cress is most definitely the best item they have for sale, cheap and filling. Cant fault.
K. T.
Oh boy. Everything from this bakery is just too good.
You know how sometimes big selection is a bad thing? Well it is not here!
R. B.
Best bakery in town. The Egg Cress rolls are especially a delight to go with their well made flatties.
H. S.
Great bread and baked goods. If you don't arrive early enough a lot of the food will be gone. Can be incredibly busy at times.
C. B. R.
Light Rye loaf is the most delicious bread ever. Cheesecake with dark chocolate base also gorgeous . Lovely place !
A. A.
The bread is delicious, I have been shopping here since it opened (across the road) over 16 years ago. Unfortunately the staff can be rude. Shame that.
P. G.
Small little bakery selling sandwiches and rolls and artisan breads, along with homemade sausage rolls, flapjacks and other treats. Good value and good quality.
J. S.
Fair do's, they seem to be much better now.
S. D.
The Spence is a small sweet bakery right on Church St that sells astonishingly good bread. There's straight up sourdough, rye and wholewheat, or, if you want something different, little flavoured loaves (these seem to change depending on what day you go in, but last time it was pumpkin).
There's also so-so takeaway coffee (too milky for my liking), some tasty unusual cakes and biscuits (like the snowball, a chocolate cookie full of jam) and the famed chorizo bread. This recipe seems to vary but, right now, it's a warm hotdog-like roll full of chorizo - the perfect portable snack. It's delicious nd will leave you with sticky fingers and a sense of slight guilt.
Being right on Church St, there's usually at least one enormous pram in the way and it can get a little packed on weekend mornings or during the school run.
There aren't any tables (only outside seating and benches with stools) so, if it's settling in you're after, you might be better off crossing the road to the other Spence, which is much bigger and has more food options. Not less kids though. We are in N16 after all.
A. H.
I can't believe I wasted so much of my life eating sliced bread from the supermarket before discovering this. I used to think you had to have some sort of Neanderthal retardedness to buy unsliced loaves. Then I ate some fresh sunflower rye from Spence Bakery. Paradigm shift! So what conclusions can be drawn from this? Either the bread is just really really good, or I received some sort of blow to the head or brain tumour and have become one of those retarded people who slice their own bread. OK, admittedly it was with marmite on it.
A. M.
Spence is definitely my go to bakery in Stokey. Fresh and delicious bread and I am an absolute sucker for their Pain au chocolat. The coffee can be a little hit and miss (sometimes really strong) and other times a little milk heavy (I'm happy to admit I'm a moderate coffee snob) but I'm always happy to visit Spence.
M. B.
Chocolate banana bread was fantastic and very moist despite my visit being late in the afternoon just before closing. Didn’t try anything else but plan to in the future.
A. T.
Consistently good cakes and bread. Thanks for all your work during lockdown everyone!
P. G. A. (.
Amazing bread and baking goods. Our favourite is the pumpkin bread, but it runs out quickly so go early :)
B. B.
Had a very nice coffee and pain au raisin here, had a very long queue but worth the wait.
I. P.
Gotta try the egg cress rolls and bagels. A staple in our shopping!
T. G. F. M.
Great local bakery with amazing gluten free bread. Best fresh gf bread I've had (:
H. T.
Egg, cress and bacon bap is a must. Cannot find this anywhere else. Absolutely incredible and to die for.
D. C.
Great bread with many different options available, yummy pastries and cookies, buns and savouries. An honest, unpretentious, affordable bakery!
C.
Amazing bakery! Cakes and bread are lovely! Staff are perfect. Highly recommend visiting!
c. l.
Heart of church street this place is the best for local bread... and also do great coffee for on the go all made fresh..
D. H.
Splendid sourdough and the coffee's pretty good too, although asking for honey in it seemed like a big hassle and apparently it just got left out in the end.
A. W.
Good rolls, limited choice but very good quality. Lemon drizzle cake is wonderful!!
D. E.
Every area needs a good bakery, love this place, good coffee too 🍵😊❤️
P. J. D. (.
Freshly baked bread and cakes. Get there early, long queue worth the wait.
M. B.
Best Bakery in town, but they are slow!
T. G.
Great pastries and I especially like their rye bread.
L. D.
It's just a bit meh. The bread isn't the best, the pastries aren't particularly good, the coffee is uninspiring and the service is most neutral. I go when I have to, not because I want to.
M. Y.
Delicious local bread. Very good
O. P.
Great bakery, could use a little more reasonable prices at times, but it's a go-to place for a petit déjeuner in Stokey.
S. D.
Always fabulous sausage rolls and good fresh bread. Go early to avoid disappointment!
I. J.
best marbled brioche. best smoked salmon bagel. bakery and cafe. made in shop.
P. B. M.
Fantastic bread but routinely overcharged. Staff insist on "adding up in their head" and most people either don't mind or don't notice. Odd.
A. B.
The most amazing apple pie and great orange raisin bread. In addition a super friendly staff.
D. M.
Great bread and baked goods. Not so great coffee- milk always too hot.
