Reviews of Northern Rye

Nice shop, they make loads of different pastries, bread and sandwiches. I had an almond croissant and a coffee, the croissant wasn't really what i was expecting, it felt more like eating a biscuit but i still enjoyed it, the coffee was nice. The sandwich looked unreal, im definitely gonna try one next time.

Lovely to find a local traditional bakery, Situated just a minute walk from the quayside near the canal locks in Ouseburn, everything is freshly baked, plenty of choice of breads, Danish pastries etc also filled baguette and homemade sausage rolls.
Chilled drinks and freshly brewed coffee available.
Well worth a visit.

I’ve followed the Northern Rye on Instagram for many months now. When the opportunity came to go to the North East, we made sure we paid a visit!! It wasn’t easy to find by car and we ended down a different dead end road! But we got out of our car and walked down the walkway by the river and finally made it! There were already a queue of people and we joined the line! It was dog friendly too which was a great plus! Couldn’t wait to get to the front to see the many delights that I have been drooling months for!! We plumped for a cinnamon bun, almond croissant, almond & hazelnut praline cruffin, sesame seed sourdough and 2 coffees! We couldn’t wait to try them and had the cinnamon bun and cruffin straight away, hence no photos!! They were both absolutely delicious! And washed down with hot coffee was a perfect start to the morning! I’ve been to many modern bakeries through my travels and this has to be one of the top bakeries in my list!!
We made it home later in the day and tasted the sourdough which was amazing! Great crust and a wonderful toasted seedy flavour! Then this morning, we shared the croissant! It still tasted fresh and full of toasted flaked almonds!! We are definitely coming back again! So wished we lived closer!! Perhaps you could open one in North Yorkshire in the future!!

Quite nice, however I was expecting next level pastries given the price difference from Lidl. The croissants and pastries were quite well baked and crispy. I prefer them lighter and fluffier with a slight chew. There are queues out the door so it’s probably me just being basic.

The best walk in bakery in Newcastle upon Tyne. Just when you think you have tried it all, Northern Rye comes along and sets the bar. Well done to the team who are producing such incredibly tasty, interesting and innovating foods, served with compassionate service and just excellence. Wow.

Went to Northern Rye based on a couple of recommendations. What a great place! From the bakery I found it difficult to choose between everything, it all looked so good.I went for a country sourdough, croissant, ginger and fennel drizzle bun and a baguette a sandwich, plus a coffee. Each thing was all so tasty!
I also really like their approach to sourcing ingredients, which I sound the info on their website- with emphasis on local, ethical nutritious produce, such as organic flours and free-range charcuterie.
Nice service, lots of other customers, a great place and not over-priced. I felt it was an honest place making honest food. Will definitely be on my list of places to go back to next time I’m in Newcastle.

Wonderful bakery and pit stop after walking along the river from city centre. The apricot Danish was delicious.
O. C.
The only reason I'm not there daily is because I would probably eat myself to death. The best pastries in town, the most amazing cheese and kimchi grilled sandwich. RECOMMEND!!!!! if there is one place you go to in Newcastle it should be this. I still dream of their mushroom, hazelnut and truffle oil danish. And the last time I went there they happened to have the most mind blowing bread pudding the world has ever seen.
j. b.
Always great baked products, and a good selection of quality groceries/ingredients. Photo isn't actually at Northern rye but just round the corner and it's the poppy and flax seed sourdough
R. H.
Extremely busy so go early, plenty of proper cakes made with great care. Every single item I tried was baked the right amount of time and care. Good flavours and great staff. Parking can be a bit of a pain but you can avoid the greedy council parking bays by parking above the pub if you walk towards the cycle hub.

Read the article about this small bakery shop few days ago and finally got a chance to have a visit just right before the holiday starts. Personally I'm not that into pastries and bread but they surprised me by making me enjoyed every bite. The almond croissant and danish were the best I have had. Fresh, delicious and very reasonably priced. Friendly staff. Wide variety of pastries. Can't reccomend highly enough.
C. E.
First visited over the Christmas period and was disappointed, little availability and long wait. However I gave it the benefit of the doubt and returned, it was very good. Bread is excellent and the pastries wonderful. Good coffee too although a tad too hot. Will be back.
B.
A bit on the pricey side, but you definitely get what you pay for. Excellent pastries and bread, some of the best I've ever had.
j.
The crunchie cruffins are a revelation, probably the best pastry I've ever tasted! Really impressed with the pain au chocolat and lemon curd morning bun! Can see why this place has such a good reputation. Wish I'd spent longer having a look around the shop, definitely need to come back!
B. B.
Only been once. Went on a Saturday morning and queued for an hour.
Not worth waiting that long.
My bro went on a Tue and didn't queue at all.
Super disappointing to queue that long and find out they don't do syrup for coffees 😂
Got a sandwich, coffee, sausage roll, cruffin and cinnamon bun for £19. So canny pricey. All the separate elements of the sandwich were proper lush. But, together, they were a bit meh. Cruffin was amazing. Cinnamon bun was good. The pastry on the sausage roll was some of the best I've had. The sausage was a bit like a Pepperami... interestingly weird...
Would go back, but turn away if I saw a queue 😉

Been wanting to visit Northern Rye for ages for some bakery goodness. Today definitely didn't disappoint!
We got an Almond croissant, a Rugbrød,
A Kouign Aman, a Cherry and pistachio danish, a Harrissa roast vegetable, caramelised onion, chickpea and vegan aioli focaccia sandwich, a Nduja taleggio honey toastie and a Bialy, Oof! Absolutely delicious
L. H.
Cannot recommend this place enough! Food is incredible! Went in for lunch came out with 2 toasties, 2 loaves, 2 coffees and 2 pastries and we were not disappointed!! All were incredible!
V. A.
Amazing bread and pastry. However, the jabon or however it was called baguette was lacking. It was just dry ham, butter and some pickles. Could’ve benefited from some mustard and cheese there to balance it all out. Added those at home and it hit the spot way nicer.
A. D.
Staff at Northern Rye are very welcoming and very happy to help you out should you be unsure of what to purchase. The flax and poppy seed sourdough was deep and complex in flavour, and the cinnamon and pecan swirl made a delightful breakfast treat!
S. P.
My partner and I did a stalk of the best places for food in Newcastle before moving here and Northern Rye was on our shortlist of things to try. We visited on our second day in town to see if the food tasted as good as their Instagram made it look.
I think we’ve easily found our new local bakery! The bread here is so nice. I’m sure that there are other places to try but Northern Rye is going to be hard to beat! Definitely check it out if you’re in town.
E. B.
Been following Northern Rye for a few months on Instagram and everything looked incredible. Finally managed to take a visit and it was better than expected. The cruffin was a perfect blend of crispy, buttery and creamy, the pecan swirl was just so chewy, toffee like and nutty and the toasties were perfectly toasted. Will be visiting as often as I can! The staff inside were also very lovely and patient while we decided on what tasty treats to get.
Update: actually visited northern rye many times and everything they do and make is delicious. Literally never been disappointed. Please go!
G. t.
Love this place. I can't eat dairy but I happily poison myself with the crispy buttery goodness from here. Cruffins and croissants are so good.
L. K.
Excellent pastries! Haven't tried the bread but it looked great. Will be coming back
F. W.
Some of the best baking I have ever tasted. Incredible bread and I get a loaf everytime I visit.
D. J. B.
Just bought a Vollkornbrot, utterly delicious, brought me back to Balkhausen memories from the 90s, a truly great bakery in Cologne.
Highly recommended!
L. C.
Just moved back up north from London, where I shopped at Borough Market more or less every weekend for 7 years, and blimey I thought the bread was good there, but... got a Northern Rye sourdough loaf from Kork in Whitley Bay yesterday, and it’s the best I’ve tasted. Tastes like the first ever time I tried sourdough. It is pure lush.
t. c.
Everything we got was just of really high quality, well worth the wait and the money. Will be going back ASAP!
R. W.
Just had the best Cinnamon Swirl ever! It tasted just as good as it looked. Oat milk flat white was good too! Will definitely make this a stop when I'm next back in town. Friendly and efficient staff.
B. D.
Excellent pastries & toasted cheese sandwiches. Friendly staff and a good location
J. H.
Fantastic selection, freshly baked, generous portion size and absolutely delicious
A. 5.
Chocolate Orange Cruffins & Nduja, honey and taleggio toasties, wonderful 5*
D. R.
Hands down, THE best Almond Croissants I've ever had!! A great selection of breads and pastries. But get there early as it will sell out by lunch time. There's a nice selection of sweet and savoury pastries, generously filled sandwiches and also a decent coffee! Always a bonus!
Prices are higher than supermarket but still very reasonable for the quality received. They have their own chocolatier that creates their own chocolate bars and sweets. Take a visit, you will not be disappointed 🙂
D. Z.
Absolutely fantastic. Possibly the best bakery in Newcastle. I remember the days of following the pop ups around the city just to get a croissant! Now the queues are so big every weekend it's next to impossible! Chuffed it's become so popular though, well deserved! And always worth the wait.
S. L.
The best almond croissant and kimchi + cheese toastie in town. Worth the queue!
A. A.
Not many kinds of bread but they're all very tasty. Nice variety of danishes, also tasty. The hot chocolate is make with nice chocolate; oat milk an option in all the tea/coffee/chocolate variants.
J. T.
Remarkable food, 100% recommended
F. A.
White sourdough, cinnamon bun, hot cross bun
J.
Amazing selection of freshly baked goods and also items from other businesses. The various good I tried were delicious. I would absolutely recommend getting the grilled cheese with kimchi if it's available 🔥
E. H.
Fantastic bread, great coffee and amazing cakes. Can't recommend enough. Sorry about leaving all the crumbs. 😁

Walking along the Ouseburn, we have often seen this place closed (normal Monday walk) but today (Wednesday) it was open. What a revelation! An outstanding range of mouthwatering temptations, all in generous portions. Utterly, utterly delicious. Artisan bread (sourdough is phenomenal), unusual sandwiches which have been so very well thought out and executed, together with the most sublime pastries combine to make this THE best bakery in Newcastle, and I don't say that lightly!
D. J.
Who can resist freshly baked breads, cakes and other delightful delicious delicacies. There's also a great selection of takeaway sandwiches. Which are certainly substantial with vegetarian and vegan choices. I'll often walk through the Ouseburn just to stop at The Northern Rye. Watch out for busier times you will have to que but worth the wait.
J. S.
Aside from the fabulous baked goods there is a good choice of sustainable foods in the shop. The almond croissant I had was great - covered in almonds and packed full of sweet almond filling
P. D.
Good coffee, not cheap but excellent for a treat.
D. J.
Best bakery in Newcastle! Freshest bread, pastries and sandwiches! Lovely staff and gréât range of other products in the shop!
Definitely well worth a visit!
s. r.
Just found this amazing place and will deffinatley be back and will be trying everything on the menu, but I will try to do it not all in one go!
L. R.
The queue was huge, but once I got my grubby hands on an armful of delicious treats I completely understood the 40 minute wait to get in. I took one bite of a cheese and ham toastie and my eyes rolled into the back of my head and I ascended to a higher spiritual plane. Don’t even get me started on the focaccia, which was absolutely sublime. This is one of Newcastle’s finest. Do yourself a favour - get yourself down to Northern Rye. You won’t regret it.
S. P.
Artisan bakery with sweet/savoury goodies and hot/cold drinks. There are always queues to get in but a lovely independent with friendly staff. They also stock products/produce from other local independents too.
C. E.
Incredible bakery in Ouseburn. There is a good range of shop products on offer but the baked goods are the stars of the show. A fantastic range of sweet goods, fresh bread and sandwiches.
S. A.
Good coffee and hot chocolate options. They sell bread, get there early!
V. K.
Very high quality goods, albeit with a recent skimping on toasty fillings.
This is one of the few places worth going to for “fancy” baked goods.
Pricy but matching with quality.
G. m.
Fabulous small batch bakery, amazing sourdough - my favourite
W. S.
Spoilt for choice, so many pastries I've never seen or heard of before and they all looked amazing. I tried one of their cruffins based on a friend's recommendation and was only disappointed by the fact I had to share it with my wife!
H. E.
Incredible pastries. I'd wanted to go here for ages and finally got there. Tried a hazelnut praline cruffin. It was unreal. So decadent and such a treat.
D. O.
Lovely fresh produce bakery however slightly overpriced. Great staff always happy to explain and advice. If you are morning person loving freshly baked bread...patiently stand in a queue .
c. l.
Went to this bakery a few weeks ago and was blown away by how delicious the bread was. Genuinely some the tastiest bread I have had in a long time.
N. F.
The bread, the focaccia and the vegan pastry are so good! Nice friendly staff too.
r. t.
Consistently excellent quality - the bread must be some of the best in the city if not further afield! The new sho in the Ouseburn is also great with a good range of sandwiches, pastries, coffee etc.
A. F.
Lovely coffee and a cookie. Will visit again.
S. R.
Ohhhh! 😋😋 Just had my third Almond Coisant in two weeks. Without exaggeration, they are the best Coisants I've ever had. Also had a Chocolate Bouchon, mm, mm, mmm. Lovely clean shop, pleasant staff and all of the delicacies are nicely presented. We'll be back.
M. R.
We stayed in Newcastle in our motorhome last weekend to attend a wedding. When staying in the motorhome I go for a walk every morning with our dog and find the local baker for bread and anything else that looks nice. I have visited bakers from Seville to Turin and can honestly say this is the best, the sausage rolls were to die for and the sourdough rye bread was the best bread I have ever had. It is worth a special trip to Newcastle to visit Northern Rye and sample their wares.
A. F.
Stunning cinemon bun and black americano. Big love for a fellow alumni of the School of Artisan Food from my wife....
e. H.
There is not enough praise I can give this place. Without doubt the best artisan bakery in the region. Sorry to fab and the rest
S. W.
Having read about this bakery we made the trip when in Newcastle to sample some of their goods. The children enjoyed hot chocolates, pain au chocolate and a chocolate bouchon, we enjoyed tea and latte and bought a few of the signature loaves.
The produce is all delicious. Well worth the trip.
C. F.
Absolutely love this place. Coffee was spot on, topped off with a fantastic sandwich. The fresh bread selection looks second to none. Highly recommended.
W. V.
Best bakery in the world!
G. M.
The pastries are amazing, the price is a bit steep so I couldn't afford it as much as I would like to. These are the best pastries I have had in the UK. I would recommend the sausage rolls that are to die for!
J. H.

K. H.
Absolutely stunning bread and pastries! The only issue is once you've had Northern Rye everything else pales in comparison. Get there early, they sell out really quickly
G. W.
