Pauline did my hair and she was absolutely lovely. I am a student and was yet to try a hairdressers in Durham. My friend recommended Alchemy and I am very happy to have given it a go! Pauline and I had a discussion when I got there about what I wanted to do with my hair and she listened carefully and gave advice. She cut my hair beautifully. The facilities are nice, everyone is friendly and they offer a student discount which was great as getting your hair done can sometimes be pricey.

My prior hair salon not only disappointed me one too many times, but as you can see from my Before photo, I would leave with dishwater dirty blonde hair. I hate, hate, hated the results I kept receiving from my prior salon and no matter how many times I spoke to thus, nothing was ever done about it and I refused to spend one penny more. I digress. The second I went into Alchemy, the ease and friendliness of the staff brought a lovely atmosphere that was as relaxed as it was vibrant. The salon itself is very well done up, all brightly lit and not a dull or dreary aspect could be seen anywhere inside, so it was nice to be in there. Disability access is good, what with the salon being on the level, though not without its flaws. There is a step up to the wash basins and that would make it extremely difficult for those who have hefty mobility issues or have difficulty walking up stairs, so it's something to keep in mind. Jamie reflects the salon in that he is outgoing and lovely to talk too. He smiles openly and gives you a sense of true welcome and while you're in his seat, you are the sole focus of his concentration. He takes his time and everything is 'just so' and that is very much to his credit, while his skillset is second only to his creativity. Jamie is, in short, the difference between hair dresser and hair stylist. He doesn't just know his trade, he visualises it and has the skills to pull it off with aplomb, something which was sorely lacking at my prior salon. I've shared a Before photo, one taken 15 minutes after leaving my prior salon, and you can see for yourselves the difference. By the time I landed in Jamie's chair, I had almost eight months of root growth, split ends and uneven layers. I felt like a drab and desperate housewife, but when I left? Well, my photo ought to speak for itself. Save yourself endless research and just book in with Jamie.

Jamie is a wonderful hairdresser and this place is a great find. Jamie took his time, explained every part of the process and what he planned to do/what it would cost. His expertise is clear, he knows colour and it’s the best cut I’ve had for as long as I can remember. I’ll definitely be back and travel from London to Durham to get my hair done here, I couldn’t recommend him and the team more. Great atmosphere, friendly and very talented.
