Reviews of Broken Spoke Bike Co-op

Great bike shop offering speedy repairs and courses on DIY bike repair. I’d definitely go again!
W.
Great shop, very knowledgeable and fair prices. Also helped me when my chain broke, no charge and got me on my way.
L. J.
I attended a DIY workshop to fix my broken bike, and it was a great experience. They helped me figure out what was wrong and fix it, but they also showed me how to check and adjust the brakes and gears, and how to fit new break cables and pads.
The workshop is very well equipped. They had all the right bits of equipment for cleaning and checking the chain, making new brake housing, etc, as well as clamp stands, well-organised tools, etc, which makes the whole process so much easier than struggling at home with a multitool . They also have various second hand bits and pieces, like worn-but-still-usable brake pads, which can keep costs down.
This all fits into the whole repair/reuse ethos of the place - one example was that they dissuaded me from buying new brake pads to replace my unevenly worn pads, instead showing me how to file down the pads to make them flat and usable again. I think most for-profit bike workshops would have just fitted new ones, costing more money and using up more resources.
Using the DIY workshop works out much cheaper than getting a bike service, and Broken Spoke also have flexibile pricing if money is tight. But the big win here is how rapidly you can learn the basics of how your bike works and how you can fix and maintain it, and how the hands-on approach helps build up confidence to work in your bike yourself.

Lovely, lovely place. Folks here will help and support you in getting your bike road-ready, and are very knowledgeable on the "how" and "why".
They also understand when you're on budget, recycling parts where possible, and letting you know all costs upfront.
If you're looking to buy a bike, they sell refurbished ones with a guarantee, so you can ride worry free in Oxford. :)

Colin was a star! Super impressed at the amount of help I received at the DIY workshop. Bike got fully fixed and learnt lots about how to do it. Fantastic value too!
J. R.
Fantastic service by friendly staff and volunteers. Huge shoutout to all of them during their workshop hours for not only helping sort out problems with the bike, but also teaching me along the way.

Great place. The staff is extremely friendly and always at your disposal. I have a race bike and we did some minor repairs and general checks in less than an hour (change pedals, degreased bike chain etc.)
It is really helpful to have someone experienced to teach you how to fix your bike and who is always there to help you.
It is also really cheap (£10 only, pieces excluded). Other shops charge you three times the amount

I had a fantastic experience here. It was my first time in a bike workshop like this where the mechanics (men and women) helped me understand what was wrong with my bike and how to repair it, which I then went on to do myself with constant help along the way. Ali was a brilliant guide and also a lot of fun to work with. Thanks to Sam as well! Can you tell me where I can find a place like this in London? Cheers guys and see you in September when I'll replace my chain! ;)

Popped in to the DIY workshop today as there was a few things which I needed to do on my bike as all the bike shops were fully booked up locally.
I had a warm welcome and was instantly put at ease as the member of staff there was able to help me quickly diagnose all the problems and come up with a plan of action.
I needed to straighten my rear buckled wheel, change my rear brake pads, change both sets of brake and the gear cables and sheathing and readjust my Sturmey Archer gear hub.
Considering I hadn't done too much bike work before, in around 1 hour and 40 minutes I was on my way with a well tuned cycling machine.
The atmosphere was friendly and encouraging and the layout of the tools and work space made it really easy to find what you need and focus on what needed doing.
We're so lucky to have a fantastic place like this and the people who make it what it is here in Oxford.
Thank you Broken Spoke :)
Richard

very friendly staff. my first time going there. I was pleasantly surprised. the pricing is based on customer's choice of what they want to pay. Would highly recommend anyone to go here for their bike repairs. One thing is that it may take a little longer since you will be learning and doing by yourself, but you will have a employee helping you at all times basically. so it will be more like a tutorial.
very cool concept of a shop. i was impressed.

Brilliant place to work on your bike and learn how to repair one. Very friendly atmosphere. The mechanics and volunteers here love bikes and are keen to help you no matter how clumsy or skilled you are, or what kind of bike you have. Whether you are looking to save money (it will be cheaper than a bicycle shop) or to learn, you can't find a better place in Oxford.

I came to the Broken Spoke with a puncture that I didn't have the right tools to deal with and a few other bike problems. They let me fix the puncture myself in their workshop. As I didn't have the time to deal with the other mechanical issues their mechanics fixed it for me. They did a professional job cheaply and were very friendly people My bike now rides really well.

Not enough staff, I was left on my own a lot with little idea of what I was doing. An explanation of what the bike needed at the start would be really helpful. I went in expecting to replace a tyre in about half an hour, and in the end spent 3 hours and £70. I did learn some skills, but for that I could have bought a new bike!? Great idea, needs more staff and a clearer explanation.
Y. T.
Very friendly place and helpful people. Fixed my bike and even ended paying less than quoted as they found cheaper solution after further investigation. Furthermore as University of Oxford staff you don't pay labour charges. Win win.

Great Bike shop! They usually have really good used bikes on sale and can repair everything for a fair price. That they are a cooperative that offers loads of courses from learning how to cycle to repairing is a great bonus!
L. S. M.
I love these guys, they're a good-hearted group of people trying to promote bike safety and maintenance in a way that doesn't come across as profiteering. Their courses are great because you get practical experience and probably save you repair money in the long run. Plus their open workshop is great for those who don't want to or can't buy lots of tools and don't want the pressure of breaking their own.

Amazing place for working on your bike! I'd spent the previous Saturday trying to get the bottom bracket off my bike and it wouldn't budge. Had it off within 30 minutes with a little help and know-how from the guys at Broken Spoke. Of course it helped that they had all the right tools, which included the most essential tool - a mechanic to swing off the end of my bike while I went at the bb with a huge wrench :D They even supplied tea just when I needed it!
All that for much less than it would have cost just to get a mechanic anywhere else to look at it.
Can't recommend them enough. If you need to fix your bike or learn more about how it works, this is the place to go.
A. G.
Amazing staff, great customers, all the tools you'd ever need, would come even if I have no bike problems
M. C.
A team of competent and enthusiastic greasy hands will help you sort out the minute problems of your bike. Better safe than sorry : come early, you never know how long fixing "some noise with the thingy there" can take. Unbeatable prices.
P. B.
Just a wonderful place! Ellie expertly guided me through what would have been a very frustrating afternoon with my bike. I had free coffee, the last brownie and it was all as cheap as chips. Highly recommended!!
D. C.
Amazing
I was worried I'd need to replace the back wheel on my bike. They helped me fix it instead! Brilliantly friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff. Taught me loads about fixing my bike. Can recommend enough
K. P.
I had a puncture in the centre of town and live in Headington, which would be an hour's walk and I dropped in to see if they could help. They were friendly and quickly, efficiently solved the problem. A lovely relaxed environment with knowledgeable people, they even identified an other potential problem so I'm popping back next week to get that resolved! Highly recommended.

Great shop I was riding around town and my chain snapped and I first tried bike zone and they wouldent let me use a chain tool so I pegged it over here (as there was only 10 minutes till it closed) and they let me use their chain tool. I also learned that you can use coffee as a hand cleaner! I didn’t have any cash in me or else I would have definitely put money in the donation box; I shall have to when I next go to town.
Many thanks for your help
R. S.
I did the beginners mechanics course here and it was so good! Ellie was really helpful and the course was fun and friendly place to learn how to take care of my bike.
N. R.
This place is absolutely amazing. They have all tools needed and they provide all the help you might need to repair your bike. Just go there if you need to (learn how to) repair your bike!
F. R.
Incredibly competent, friendly and not trying to rip you off (like most places in Oxford). Very well stocked with second-hand parts, sold for extremely low prices.
K. H.
Led by very helpful volunteers who help you have the skills to do your own maintenance. Also there's tea and coffee whilst you work which is a great touch because it can be chilly in there!
J. W.
Great experience. I lost a nut for my front wheel, they gave me one for free, tightening it and also give me some helpful advice about other stuff. I will only go to them from now on.
H. W.
Fantastic place! Really well-equipped, super cheap, incredible value, and you get loads of really great help and advice from the staff and volunteers. Best to visit on Thursday or Friday though, as they can fill up on a Saturday.
S. K.
Very kind, helpful and quick service for my bike.
J. G.
Great place to learn to work on you bike and have someone friendly to chat to as well
A. G.
Super helpful, way cheaper than other Oxford cycle repair shops, and highly competent. Super honest, definitely recommended
A. N.
The best DYI workshop for bikes I know. Lovely and wise staff helping you to repair and fix your wheels.
T. S.
These guys are just passionate and massively knowledgeable about...you guessed it; Bikes. And they're their to help people and to encourage more folk to get out of cars and on to bikes. It'd be pretty hard not to give them 5 stars!
S. M.
I just needed to whip out a faulty valve and replace it with a spare but didn't have the little tool. Instead of buying one, which I'd probably never need again, I was able to borrow the tool for a few minutes to get it done. No dramas!
A. K.
Good but I will never understand why you need to pay £65 to know how to fix your bike .. like, it’s tooooo much!!!
P.
