Reviews of Alder Carr Farm

Excellent Coffee shop. Polite staff, food arrived very quickly after ordering. Well stocked farm shop. With very good choice of fresh food. Plus nice little shop's in the courtyard. Would highly recommend a visit here.

We had an afternoon tea for 20 people this afternoon to celebrate a baby shower. The staff were amazing, the food delicious! Friendly, well organised and very helpful. The place itself is beautiful too. Thank you 😊
L. D.
We had a lovely trip to Alder Carr Farm for the Halloween trail. It's only short but perfect for toddlers. My son loves tractors and a kind man stopped to let him look around it .... made his day!!
A. C.
A well stocked shop with lots and lots of different items. A tad on the pricey side on some bits, but you sort of expect that with some of these sorts of places..!
Nice for a wonder round, and then you can pop to the Court Yard Cafe just behind or perhaps over for a short stroll in the nature reserve.
M. F.
Great little farm shop lots of interesting things to buy. Delicious chilli scotch egg and pork pie. The pastry was excellent. Nice little picnic bench area to sit at and enjoy your purchases. They also sell Pinneys products. Excellent selection of deli counter cheeses. Local Capel pies. Beers, gins, chocolate, biscuits, sweets, fresh fruit and veg, breads, cakes sauces, jams the list goes on. Could've spent a fortune.
J. L. M.
Unique farm shop with a zero waste shopping section, where you can bring empty containers and fill them up with foods, detergents and more. Gorgeous selection of cheeses and other delicious local products. Recommend the truffle brie!
D.
Lovely cafe, The staff are polite and hard working, always a smile.
Delicious looking cakes and popular scones. Unfortunately couldn't try them because of diet. Parking and farm shop are good.
H. Q.
Excellent local restaurant with superb food and service and not overly expensive either.

Great farm shop. Nice out door seating for cafe
A. B. B.
A great place to have a coffee or lunch, small outlets to look round, and a great selection of cheeses on the cheese counter plus
Much more.

Super place in barn settings. Everything you need in one fantastic place. Plus good food and events.

Lovely farm with scenic views, a small nature trail, various farm animals to see, cafe, produce shop, reasonably priced mini garden centre with a good variety of plants. Don't forget to try the Alder Carr Farm ice cream though! Vanilla and rhubarb or rhubarb and ginger are a couple of our favourites. There is parking at the farm or you can walk here from Needham Lakes which is probably about 20 minutes walk.

OK- ish. Wheelchair access was VERY difficult as surfaces are poor and pushing a chair was tough. Found service at café poor. We - 2 people - arrived, did some shopping and went into café - arriving at just after 11.32 - in no uncertain terms we were told that breakfast service finished at 11.30 and we could have drinks & baked goods. Also that the available table was needed by 12.45. After leaving menus the server disappeared, 10 min later no one had checked on us. They were clearly all rushing around restocking the kitchen. I understand that - but then CLOSE the café if you don't intend serving diners. I felt like an unwanted nuisance.
When we finally managed to get hold of a server, my usually VERY patient husband raised his voice to get attention, after I had been to the counter with no success. Coffee & tea was good - but server did not check if we wanted hot or cold milk, so we ended up sharing the half filled small jug of cold milk. As they were so busy I felt I should not inconvenience them any more. On the plus side - prices were reasonable.
Not sure whether we'd go again.

Great place for breakfast, lunch.Good food choice at a cafe. Pleasant atmosphere and surroundings. Lovely craft shops.A nice farm shop for groceries/fresh produce.lovely choice of good quality garden plants for sale outside the shop. I always find pretty and unusual plants for my garden. I often shop there and then have some lunch with friends or family.
S. K.
Lovely farm shop with quality products of a standard you would find in Harold's of Lindon
M. F.
Visited for ice creams and some food shopping. Fantastic ice cream. Also took photos by the pond.
H.
Love this place, unfortunate i had to sell my arms to eat here so i had to feed myself with my feet. other than that cool place
L. F.
A lovely opportunity to buy fresh meat and veg - very relaxing environment. So much more available on the site!
D. M.
Great farm shop with amazing produce and a fantastic independent butchers. (The fillet steak is to die for) The courtyard is great for gifts and the cafe serves amazing food, albeit expectedly a tad on the pricey side. All in all a lovely place to visit, very well run by the owners.
Edit Feb 2021 dropped to 4 stars pending the new butchers. Sorry to see them go!
S. H.
I love this place BUT l rarely go because the terrain is just not suitable for disabled people. This place has been open for years, but there's no set pathway, it's rough underfoot & I'm so scared of falling over as there's lumps & bumps everywhere, even on the path to the actual Farm Shop very rough uneven concrete. Surely sorting a decent path & providing 3 decent blue badge parking bays wouldn't cost a fortune!!!!please put a proper path in not just a rough uneven surface!!!!
J. B.
So much to do. Lovely cafe, farm shop and more. Well worth a stop
E. L.
Alder Carr Farm is always a lovely place to visit, the farm shop has an amazing selection. There is a woodland walk, a small kids play area. A selection of shops and businesses including a gift shop. We had lunch in the barn cafe which was delicious.
Q. A.
Great farm shop. It has a small cheese counter, butcher’s section, cured meats, lovely baked goods from Wooster’s bakery as well as fresh produce and all your essentials. They have a wide range of sweet treats.
Got a scotch egg from there and the yolk was still perfectly soft.
J. S.
Food very good, all locally souced, friendly staff, fantastic farm shop and craft shops, free parking,
S. L.
Our first visit, we're holidaying in the area, good produce,, lots of jams and Chutneys, we bought a frozen chicken & mushroom lasagne which was lovely, the fresh meats looked amazing as well. Lots of confectionery, bread and cakes. We will be going back for more.
E. P.
It says it's a farm shop, but there's enough to do to spend a good part of your day here. There's a lovely nature trail through the old trees and past ponds and farm animals, then have some lunch in the café, buy some supplies and treats for your dinner... If you've got kids there's a great little play area... and the fruit ice cream is some of the best in the country. Well worth a visit!
L. B.
Lovely coffee and cream scone. Good service and friendly staff.
Very popular today so get there early.
Went into food shop and brilliant plus good supply of eco friendly goods
M. S.
Amazing Breakfast! Friendly attentive staff in a welcoming and clean environment. Would like to go back sometime for lunch, with a menu that also sounds delicious. I can highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed.
M. B.
Such a cute and diverse farm shop. With the butcher counter and cheese counter, along with fresh bread, veggies and a whole array of little treats, there is everything you could need to sustain a household, as well as spoil yourself. It's great to support local as well.
A. G.
Visited this week to meet up with family for lunch. Courtyard area was nice and had coffee and cake. Not quite the same eating food from a small box but that is where we are at present. Worth a visit.
m. f.
Nice, relaxed place to shop. Start with a cuppa and breakfast and then choose from a selection of quality fruit and veg. The new(ish) butchery is excellent with a great selection of quality produce. This is now our weekly shopping destination.
J. S.
Fabulous hidden gem. Great for locals and visitors to the area. Lovely range of small craft out lets and great restuarant /cafe. We've enjoyed breakfast several times while visiting friends. Super Shop, fresh local produce and much more. Keep up the great work.
H. K.
I absolutely love this little farm shop. They have lovely fresh, local and seasonal produce. They just so friendly too. They had an incredible range of local apples last time I visited. Much better variety than the same old apples you get in every single supermarket. Their ice cream is insane! So yummy.
S. H.
Absolutely loved the farm shop and café here. It's beautifully rustic, cosy in the winter and so much local food and drink to buy. Very friendly and polite staff and a really chilled vibe that made it a delight to visit.
M. C.
Lovely friendly place with good food no loud music great to meet for lunch
R. B.
Really lovely farm shop and cafe. Delicious food and friendly staff in a lovely setting!
J. T.
Great place to visit, shops selling amazing local foodstuffs and other interesting things including antiques, pottery which is being made onsite, a lovely gift shop, sugarcrafts also a cafe which smelt amazing, dogs allowed if you sit in courtyard, but unfortunately on our visit it was raining so we had to give that a miss. Highly recommended a visit
S. R.
Surprisingly well stocked farm shop with good choice of vegetables and fruit. Large selection of home made pickles and preserves. Very helpful and pleasant staff. Café restaurant which was full on day of visit, doing Sunday roast, staff recommend booking in advance. Small section with various plants although these appeared the worse for wear on the day. Other small boutique style shops in square behind shop which also had outdoor seating. Prices in food shop typically high for what is probably a popular place with foodies.
S. G.
I enjoy walking here along the river from Needham Lakes. There is always a good plant selection from Katies Garden outside. The vegetables in the shop are good quality and fresh, but expensive. There is a cafe in the courtyard, but does not cater for the lacto intolerant or vegan at all.
P. “. B.
I initially visited the shop to support local farmers and purchase vegetables etc cheaper & fresher than large supermarkets. I was obviously very naive. The produce is definitely no cheaper and the vegetables and fruit are older. But is does stock a good variety of English apples if you don't mind them over ripe. It has a good selection of local cheeses and some beer and dairy produce I've not seen elsewhere locally. It's worth a visit for items you might not find elsewhere if you don't mind paying the price. The café is pleasant for a quick lunch or hot drink, and a starting point for the river walk
A. P.
We attended the summer fair yesterday with our dog and we had a lovely time. There were dog bowls and taps so that the dog could have a drink. The shop is full of great things to try and the staff are all really friendly.
S. K.
You must visit Alder Carr Farm cafe for a real breakfast treat it's very delicious indeed... And the sunday roast is superb.. You really won't fine any better beef that melts in your mouth... Very happy and friendly staff to finish off the experience of eating here.. highly recommended
K. S.
Alder Carr Farm Shop was a great find, now it is a regular stop.
Fantastic breakfast in the cafe, and a lovely safe shopping experience with everything you need, from Fruit and Veg to FIsh and Seafood.
Brilliant!!
R. K.
Visited the sugar craft shop today to get supplies for my daughter's birthday cake. As always, the lady was extremely helpful and full of great advice. Helped me make the right purchase for my needs and budget even though it meant she got a smaller sale. I will always recommend her to anyone. Top service.
M. M.
Very pleasant and covid safe and loads more wonderful goods to buy plus lovely brown paper bags to put your fresh fruit in!
J. A.
Slightly difficult to find as after a couple of clear signs, we reached a T junction with no sign. Service was friendly and helpful. Coffee was ok, cake was really good. Toilets were clean but a bit cramped and in need of refurbishment.
J. G.
My review relates to the café which I visited with a colleague and a disabled person in a wheelchair. The staff could not have been more helpful in getting us in and seated according to our needs and our afternoon tea was a delight. 2 of us chose the cream tea which was delicious and the other choice was a yummy cheese scone. A very enjoyable afternoon, thank you to you all.
T. D.
Excellent farm shop, nice cafe but food quite pricey.
k. l.
Excellent little shop. And found a plant we've be looking for, and haven't been able to find, in all the major garden centres.
Very friendly staff.
N. G.
Lovely place, nice independent shops, great farm shop with local produce. The farm produced eggs, pork, lamb and beef are delicious. We often visit the pottery, cafe and sugarcraft studio and treat ourselves to a coffee at the cafe 😀
N. J.
Really friendly and helpful staff. Awesome produce, meat and cheeses. I cannot fault this place, it’s a joy to browse in and you won’t walk out disappointed!
D. A.
Have enjoyed visiting for more years than I care to remember!
Well stocked shops, good food.
Love the sign "beware grandparents playing"!
BUT do miss the small play area for children to let of steam before going inside to behave at table
K. P.
Excellent farm shop and restaurant
A. J. W.
Outstanding level of service, amazing food - one of, if not the best burger I've ever had! Its a great eatery with rural cafe feel! Book a table to avoid disappointment on a Saturday!
S. S.
Lovely farm shop. Fresh Veg, a meat counter, lots of varied produce. Jams and pickles . Dissappointed that some of the produce had palm oil but was not local products.
j. m.
Visited for the 1st time today for lunch and it was lovely. Attentive staff and food tasted superb. Will definitely be back.
J. D.
Very nice café, not the most extensive menu, and certainly fairly expensive, but you do get what you pay for. Food is 1st class.
The farmshop stocks a wide variety of local goods, again not cheap, but locally produced never is, your paying for quality.
M. M.
Visited the place to get some cheese, but found an awesome place, where I can get my daily groceries now :)
On top of that, the stuff is really friendly and where able to help me out to make a small cheese selection ☺
C. H.
lovely barn and courtyard cafe with farmshop selling wide range of greengrocery and other groceries and bread, with a deli-counter. There are also some craft/antique shops, a farm made ice cream van, and a small plant centre. Will definately be back.
S. J.
Walked dogs from Needham Lake to here. Had the chicken Bacon on granary . Was tasty.
Need a bit bit more coffee in their coffee as very weak.
S. A.
Would definitely recommend it. Plus shops to buy things. Food shop looked very good too. You'd need to book st weekend's as it gets budy at the cafe.
D. H.
A fantastic country farm shop with fresh produce and an amazing range of vegan friendly foods.
G. G.
Good selection of fresh veg, excellent cheese selection, good meat cuts and selection of niche food from various parts of the county. Worth a look.
A. M.
Very well stocked up farm shop and a fantastic cafe with a delicious menu. Home made ice cream made of locally grown fruit.
T. S.
Wonderful 'pick your own' farm with farm store and small craft yard containing a pottery, carpenter & various other crafts. Lovely café serving delicious teas & meals. Plant sales too. Lovely countryside setting on the outskirts of Needham Market.
M. Y.
A goof local farm complex amd shop with local crafts and a small cafe/restaurant. The cafe does get busy and you can sometimes have to wait 30 minutes just to get a table. The farm shop sells good local produce all year round, but it is priced a little high.
Z. S.
Fantastic farm shop wide range of ethical and eco products as well lots of fresh local produce Also great range of local wines and spirits was a surprisingly large range! Highly recommend x
J. K.
Lovely farm shop and nature trail
G. R.
Best place in the area for some decent cheese and meat, a spot of lunch and loads of excellent produce. Worth going out of your way for a visit...
f. w.
Great farmhouse with an array of delicious goodies, you wouldn't do your weekly shop here, it would cost a fortune but its nice for some treats.
I. S.
Is this West Suffolks best kept countryside treat? What a great shopping experience- great food, living farm, coffee house, restaurant! Plus plus! Best bread I ever bought!
C. J.
Farm shop with a lovely café and good bread. Plus all sorts of other little units which sale crafts antiques plants. Park in town and walk to it so much nicer.
B. P.
What a great find. Fantastic venue, fantastic farm. Great food, wonderful collection of shops. Very good cafe, serving home made food with many locally grown ingredients. Worth the stop.
F. C.
It's not a huge place but they have a lot of local and fresh foods, and everything seems high quality. There is also a restaurant but it is a bit expensive, and a small selection of craft and gift shops
G. F. (.
Lovely cafe with good choice of food and drinks. Top quality meals. Shopping is also brilliant, always something new and unique to find
M. Y.
Lots of nice food goodies in the shop, we’ll worth a visit and you’ll be hard pressed to keep your hands in your pockets. Coffee & cakes afterwards.
C. S.
Lovely food in the courtyard cafe. Could do with a few more gluten and dairy free options on the menu. But ask and they will change some of the menu options around for you.
I. M.
It's a great shop and the butcher supplies some great tasting meat.
K. H.
Nice place, but arrived at 3.20pm and told only tea and cake. Asked for a sandwich, but couldn't oblige. Wish they put restrictions/times on website or FB.
P. G.
The nature trail is great for kids and families alike but may take sometime before you start as the startis right beside the baby lamb enclosure and no one can resist a chance to feed them. Shop is excellent too
M. W.
Met up with a friend for a light lunch. Very busy so booking advisable. As well as the restaurant there is a well stocked shop with local produce. Also other retail outlets.
T. R.
I love a farm shop! The only problem I have is they are all seem so over priced. Staff nice and friendly. It seems to becoming a treat then a place to go offen.
K. J.
Lovely place, food is amazing. Staff friendly and polite. Nothing bad to say about this place.
M. B.
Very nice afternoon out. Took my 1 year old to see the pigs and chickens then we had a lovely ice cream.
J. W.
A great food shop, lots of local produce, plus some other small shops and a cafe, with a small but well chosen selection of plants and pots, with a small collection of typical farm animals.
T. G.
Great "farm" shop, although it's really a lot more than that. It has a great variety of produce, including some locally sourced items.
N. C.
I love farm produce and it's a lovely little shop got some fantastic black garlic and a tray of free range eggs, staff were very friendly and helped a lot!
H. B.
Good selection of fruit and veg (often grown on site) as well as high end deli items. Nice cafe on site too...and goats that climb trees.
H. B.
Nice but expensive, not many savoury snacks in the shop but lots of sweet ones. Very cold toilets which wouldn't work well with a wheelchair.
L. M.
Wonderful, very popular restaurant (booking advised for lunches) and an excellent shop full of local produce, highly recommended.

A. S.
Nice cafe, great food, very busy so service a bit slower than we would have liked.

A good range of fresh, local produce. Cheese counter is especially enticing.
S. M.
It’s a shame that the menu has changed, my mum and I were very disappointed that the ploughman’s was not on the menu because that was just the best ever and my mum’s bubble and squeak was not the same as it used to be - you know what they say ‘If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!’...
A. C.
