Reviews of Hill & Szrok Master Butcher & Cookshop
M. d. E.
highly recommended!
Butcher by day and restaurant by night, this particular spot is absolutely worth going. we went for dinner last night and had, hands down, the best meat I had in the UK and probably the best pork I had in my life.
I really loved the atmosphere, the staff was very nice, good selection of wine and I love that they have cards you can take explaining the story of every single farmer they work with.
will surely come back!!!

Very nice butcher shop. We go here almost once per week, typically getting chicken, sausages, sometimes minced pork, eggs or other cuts of meat. The meat selection and quality are great. They also have a small range of beer and wine, including Kernel and some other locals. Good place to stop if you find yourself on Broadway Market in search of meat.

We have been here twice for dinner now and can not fault it. The atmosphere is cosy without being cramped, lovely warm low lighting, great music and delicious food. A small menu that always changes depending on what’s in season. Simple dishes done beautifully that respect the great produce. If you’re going to eat meat eat high welfare meat- and that’s what you will find here.
Plus super lovely staff and great wine. It’s the perfect date night place.
By day- the take away burgers on the weekend are ridiculously good and I’m not even a burger person. The meat is high quality and the beef bones have been the best I’ve used so far for making broth. So happy to have this place as a local. 🙏

Been both day (butcher) and night (restaurant) and both are fantastic choices for any meat 🥩 lover.
+ The centrepiece white marble chopping block is wiped clean, set for communal covers, laid out with great atmosphere and a buzz.
+ A blackboard menu based on a small selection of classic and less common cuts is great to keep choice down but also meaning you know where the source of food is coming from.
+ Cozy, intimate, relaxed and moreover, it allows you see exactly where your meat comes from and talk directly to the chefs who prepare it.
The restaurant experience is stripped down with a show put on right there in the butcher shop.

Super-quality meat, nice atmosphere during dinner. Friendly staff!
Maybe, the t-bone steak was incredibly overpriced (~100£/kg)

Such a special place, starting from the food , wines, service, atmosphere, vibe and music. A Brodway market little gem, highly recommended!

A good butcher and fabulous sandwich shop during lockdown. I love how the owner build a strong community in this place but the restaurant is 3 stars. Nicely cooked meat but very slow service/ lots of salt and oil.
J. M.
Great atmosphere and service! On the pricey side but this was to be expected for organic and sustainable meats. Was a bit disappointed with the Rub steak - tasted on par with your average steak. Lamb and pork belly + all of the side plates were incredible.
A. M.
Had yet another incredible meal at the cookshop last night for a friend’s bday. All of the meats were cooked to absolute perfection and I’m still dreaming of the flavors. The wine list is extensive and has lots of great priced bottles. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating as always. Thanks!

The best steak in London by a country mile. A working butcher transforms to an intimate restaurant at night with a simple menu: meat and 3 sides to choose from.
S. Z.
My partner and I had an excellent dinner here on a Saturday night! There was lots of free space when we arrived at about 7. Staff were friendly and attentive. Everything we ate was great - the lamb shoulder, T-bone and long stemmed broccoli especially standing out. The wine was excellent as well.

I dined at your restaurant the service and food was amazing, lovely atmosphere...I thought that your restaurant design was different from butchery to restaurant, multifunctional space, brill

Went on a weekend night and can’t say enough good things about the food, the ambiance and service. The meat was delicious, by far one of the best sirloin steaks I have had in London which were a perfect match to the delicious fennel and tomato salads we had to accompany the meat. It’s a small restaurant that doesn’t take reservations but the wait wasn’t long, and we starting a bottle of wine while waiting outside in the lovely Broadway Market. Perfect for a (carnivour!) date or small groups. Service excellent as well - they guided us patiently so we didn’t order too much or too little food!

The palace is well furnished. It looks like a butcher and it is, but the restaurant/bistrot model fits well.
The meat is outstanding but we had our meals slightly cold, even if it was properly coocked. This may be due a missmanagement of time. It may happen but given that the prices incorporates a high quality service (20£ for a lamb chop), it should not happen. Not a big deal. It was good anyway!
The wine: we had a Domaine de la Pepiere 'La Pepie' Cabernet Franc for 37£ which is definitely over priced.

Eaten here on the evening over 100 times and it’s the best. I never planned to eat there so much, but it does not seem to offer me any choice. Produce-led it takes the future of sustainable and regenerative agriculture as it’s catalyst. On the evening the very model of the business, creates energy and vibe. The staff don’t stop, covering multiple duties, FOH often prepping starters, or washing dishes. They are engaged and dedicated. It feels family run, and that’s what they’ve made here. Food is so consistently delicious. Humble dishes, extravagant produce, that respects the best of the peasant food tradition that inspires all good food. This place is sincere and fun. Can’t wait to get back there when things return to some normality.
V. N.
Great meat quality with decent portion sizes! Definitely will come back to explore more options available on the menu that gets update quite frequently. Sides are also delicious and feel as a right feet in terms of taste and size to the mains. Didn’t take it long time to arrive and stuff was friendly even at late hours. All of that with reasonable pricing.

This place really is outstanding - though you will need to get there before 8 on a Friday to get a seat without queuing. It works best for small groups - ideally two or three - because the seating is communal and quite basic and the restaurant small. The Chateaubriand I had there last night was stunningly good - and I admire any restaurant that offers side dishes of fried egg (£1) and sausages (£3). The house red is good and cheap (£19) and overall its very competitive for what you are getting. Mostly though its about the meat.
Just updating my reviews of 6 years ago. The restaurant is still here. It has survived Covid. It is still excellent. I didn't comment t on the butcher side of the business before. Pricey but excellent beef chicken and lamb. But what we love is the pork chops and the mince. Truly superb.
S. B.
Been there 5 times in total since Nov 2018, the review is a mixture of the experiences. 4 stars could be a bit generous given the last two times I didn't enjoy much, last time the meat arrived cold at the table, when told the waiter said it was because they let it rest to get the proper texture... cold meat is not really enjoyable, and the other times I've been there it was served to me at a proper temperature. I really liked the Sunday lunch menu, with different elements beside meat (pasta was very good), but I understand you change the business model and focus on cooking your meat, so please try to do it more properly, given now there isn't much choice on the menu. I love the setting, when eating at the central table; the sides are very good. A dive into the past, menú wise, would be much appreciated.

We were a group of 3. We scored our experience according to MasterChef criteria, with an average score from each of us.
Ambiance: Great, although music was intrusive and distracting.
Service: we were concerned due to previous reviews, but our initial impressions were very positive. However we thought the service tapered off as the evening progressed.
Food: Entrees were very good, enjoyed by all. Mains were also well cooked, although sides were disappointing, with the pumpkin significantly undercooked.
Dessert: N/A
Wine list: Extensive, although a disappointing amount of options in the moderate price range.
B. W.
Had an absolutely wonderful dinner here. Steak was second to none and the side dishes were fabulous.
The wine selection is excellent with many organic and natural wines to choose, across a range from sparkling to desert.
The staff were attentive but not intrusive, and the owner was happy to chat at length about which wine was best.
I would highly recommend eating here, turn up early to avoid disappointment as it certainly fills up fast!
T. K.
I almost didn’t want to review this place for fear of it getting too many new customers! But it seems unfair to keep this place a secret.
By day, a fantastic butchers with great quality meat and very helpful staff. It’s not cheap but it’s no more expensive than any other place for the same quality. Staff are also very good at giving advice on best cuts for dishes.
By night, an amazing restaurant serving locally sourced, seasonal food. Dishes are simple but perfectly well assembled and the wine list, although not as extensive as others, is very well matched. You cannot book tables so get there early.
S. R.
Butcher that turns in to a restaurant! Meats are amazing, serves is on point. Definitely recommend going here!
t. p.
Good quality meat, but rude and grumpy staff and insane high prices combined with limited selection (on the day I went there was no pork belly, black pudding or streaky bacon) mean I won't be going back :(
N.
It's a shame that on our 2nd visit the quality and cooking of the meat was not to the high standard we got the 1st time. All sides we excellent. Loved specially the cabbage with shrimp butter.
The big disappointment was the way the ribs were cooked. Only 1 of the 4 wing ribs we ordered was cooked well. The rest were all overcooked and some bits were quite chewy. We were expecting all of them to be cooked the same way: red inside with all the fat rendered. It's a real shame because I had saved the place in My favourites but I've now removed it.
A. B.
Best butcher in London and definitely one of the best restaurant! Never thought I was going to like certain cuts of meat so much, but the produce and the chef knowledge deliver an amazing meal! Super nice staff and Luca, the owner, is one of the most enthusiastic persons I have ever met
T. W.
We went for a quick dinner before going to do an escape room at Time Run over the park (check it out!). We really liked the food and were recommended a decent bottle of wine. The prices weren't too over the top, and service was friendly and attentive. We didn't have to wait but the waiter said that it's often busier when it's not so cold outside. These people definitely know how to handle meat correctly. Worth a trip for carnivores.
G. H.
Amazing, butchers by day, restaurant by night. The place is transformed into a very cosy eatery, serving awesome steaks and seasonal cuts of meat that as butcher's! they do have some inside knowledge. Great friendly ambience, sitting around the converted butcher's block table, great wine list, great food, well worth a visit. Thanks TOM....P.S. You can't book a table, so get there early, it's well worth the wait, 5 star!
L. T.
Me and my boyfriend have wanted to try H&S for ages so we came for his birthday on a Saturday night at 7 without booking (we were very lucky with this I'm sure it doesn't always happen!) - were seated straight away and proceeded to have the most delicious 3 courses. Everything was so perfect and we can't wait to come back! Love love the centre table and the whole atmosphere is lovely.
D. V.
The meat is very good! Had Rump and was amazing! With some potatoes on the side.
Very relaxed environment and super friendly staff.
Can be pretty busy and recommend for 2 people as the main table (bigger one) is hard to get and is supposed to be shared; but possible for more people.
For sure I recommend this place! :)
N. N.
Have been to the restaurant here several times and will come again. Meat is delicious and sides and starters are also really tasty. Only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that I've found it hard to find a red wine I like on the menu. They've all had the same bitter aftertaste that is often characteristic of organic wines. So it's let down a little by that.
T. K.
Hill & Szrok is so delicious I don't really want to tell others worrying I may not get a table there at my leisure anymore but the staff are so great I have to let London know! Meat is cooked to perfection, sides are surprisingly green and not greasy for a meat focused eatery and the staff are super friendly and enthusiastic. Wine & water are the only liquids of choice but fear not because there is a newsagent right next to it where you can buy other refreshments and bring in no hassle. The only drawback for me is that seating could be more comfortable. Stools are placed around a large marble table with further stool seating around the edges of the restaurant. Overall a great spot for lunch or dinner alike!
E. F.
Came here for dinner. The meat was good (but not exceptional), well cooked and tender. Sides were disappointing. Very average considering the price is the same as many very good restaurants.
H. T.
Haven't eaten here, but the butcher here is amazing and one of the best in the east. Amazing selection of quality cuts, and generally cut to order. Try the dry aged rib eye steaks, and you'll never eat that tesco trash again.
S. B.
I thought this butchers would be too expensive for my budget but it works out about the same for the basics as the supermarket and same as the previous butchers, H.Tidimans which closed a few years ago. Broadway Market can be annoying for locals on a budget these days. Staff are very helpful and share their knowledge. Connor and Luke were really nice last week when I got a bit stressed about a joint of lamb!!
S. I.
Fun cozy venue with well executed dishes made from the quality produce of the shop. What better way to stand by your product than cook it for your customers. Good fun not everything (sides) was a winner but importantly, and quite rightly, the meat was the star of the show.
T. R.
The bavette steak was perfectly cooked and so tender (and only £16!), the pasta dish amazing, wine list was broad and reasonably priced, and the service was even better. 6/5!
P. O.
Fantastic meal in an amazing space. The menu is focused on high quality cuts of meat, with a good range of starters and sides. Staff are friendly and relaxed but knowledgeable.
A. C.
Best butcher and restaurant for meat lover…heaven on earth
M. A.
Quite possibly london's best butchers, finest quality meats, chickens from fosse meadow and the Fredericks family's label anglaise. But most importantly reasonable prices. Just to confirm I have no relationship to the owners and I use the shop every day.
J. S.
Spectacular steak tartare , the best I've had. Sides are small so order several. Overall very good meal.
J. L.
Brilliant butcher and even better restaurant. Can't go wrong with nearly everything on the menu. No reservations, so you may need to wait to be seated at night, but well worth it.
N. H.
Hill & Srzok deliver good dining time after time. Simple meat-based dishes and sides made with quality ingredients served in a casual atmosphere. Friendly and attentive staffs help make this spot a repeat.
S. Z.
Very good meat dishes, I had lamb which was great. Wine selection is amazing. Not on the cheap price but not super expensive either.
A. D.
The simple lunch menu makes u miss more choices at first but everything starts to make sense when the food comes out. I found it was distinctively good! Easy going staff. Will be back!
S. P.
Amazing veal chop - one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. This place really knows their meats. Worth the trip to East London!
M. M.
Nice place where you eat at communal tables. You can't reserve a place so it's first come first served. Menu is very short and prices at the higher end. We had starters and mains and left hungry, but it was still worth it.
d. d.
we love it a lot . Friendly staff and tasty food at reasonable price.
I really like the idea to create a kind of home-environment, (old style trattoria) with superb food.
Great job !!!!

Good quality meat, but very expensive (e.g. £40/kg for Lamb Cutlets).
M. W.
Best place for meat on Broadway market. But the side dishes could be better.
T. Q.
Went to the cookshop for dinner. Lovely atmosphere, pleasant service and really delicious food - the meat was, of course, spot on, but the veggie sides were great as well.
E. M.
Food was really well cooked and meat was good quality but service unfortunately poor. Left without ordering dessert because we had had enough!
N. V.
Favorite place to eat. We are regulars here- the meat is the finest you can find in the area, the ambiance is great and the staff are friendly and down to earth.
A. P.
Wonderful meal yet again last night. Excellent.
D. G.
High quality and well cooked meats. Disappointing wines and sides.
A. O.
This place is goooood. The medium rare ribeye, the vibe, the wine. Really recommend the cote du rhone (second least expensive on the list).
N. L.
Always incredible quality, but what makes it really stand out is their sustainable approach to sourcing the meat!
K. B.
Great meet and excellent service. I wasn’t sure about quantities and the exact cut but the took the time and help we well.
A. M.
Great last meal before London lockdown 2.0. Service was amazing and food delicious!
A. J.
The best customer service and friendliness from a fantastic organic and free-range butcher any one could ever ask. Always go the extra mile (and play great tunes!)
Y. C.
Recommend by my friend, tried the salami, pastram- cured beef section, excellent quality and taste! Definitely come back next time.
A. A.
really good food and atmosphere, good wine selection for reasonable price, overall good price to value, people are really nice, would (and will) go back there any time :)

Great place to buy various types of meat and not only, but not necessarily the best. Quality is good.

(Translated) The most delicious meat restaurant in London.
Butcher shop during the day and restaurant at night.
Especially the rum is excellent and the price is reasonable.
Beef is a reasonable price.
I learned that there are some people who are obsessed with food even in Longner.
