Reviews of Northfields Model Shop
D. W.
Rarely do I find myself compelled to write a review, and what I may have to say might sound confusing or even contradicting. But just hear it out first. The tldr : This place is amazing... and a real gold mine for little and big kids everywhere.
Model rail shops in West London are almost virtually extinct. So upon hearing on the existence of Northfields, I took a nice sunny trip to see what was in store. Upon arrival, whilst the store was open, the door was shut and I had a few exchanges with another gent outside. After about 8 minutes, the owner comes along and opens up the door (who had taken a brief detour around the corner to assist another customer with a broken model).
When you enter, you are greeted with what can only be described as Jenga pile of boxes filled with models, stock and toys. Even despite difficulty moving past the first sixth of the store, there is enough stock there to keep you easily entertained for well over an hour. (They are not kidding when reviews mention "Aladdin's cave".) I found some hidden treasures (both old and surprisingly recent too) and entertained in some delightful conversation with the owner.
And this is where I come to the contradiction. Yes... there is an issue with space as some of the 1* reviews may suggest. But all of that is offset by the fact that :
a) The owner is probably one of the most delightful chaps I've ever come across. Knowledgeable and entertaining... with quite the backstory!
b) For the locals, its clear that this store provides more than just trade, but a service. From taking the time to build kits for customers, to home repairs, to buying in second-hand stock and even arranging 1:1 trades for hobbyists.
c) The sheer variety in available stock (I've eyed some extremely rare stock that are just hiding behind the walls here). A child will not make it past the first 30cm without wanting something.
You just don't get the same level of excitement, service and welcome from as you would from browsing something akin to TMC or Hattons. Being able to see the stock and have that knowledge available on-hand is important, and I would be devastated if I saw this store disappear. I will surely be back next payday!

This place is like my mind, full of models with no particular order!
Being a small shop, most of the models are in piles, going from the floor up to the ceiling, which makes it hard to find what you are looking for sometimes. Same are the prices, a bit over the average.
But the owner is so kind and nice, last time i have been there I spent a couple of hours talking to him and seeking cars.
After a long sightseeing journey, watching every corner, in order to find the models I wanted, I finally left with some good ones, even rare.
This place is ha pearl, and if you are into train models or cars in general, make sure you won't miss it.

Excellent shop and excellent knwoledgeable service. Yes, very cluttered but many items that are difficult to find elsewhere. Perfect location for popping down from Heathrow on the tube if transferring between flights and have time to spare.

Perfect shop for all of your model train needs 😁
The owner is an absolute star, full of knowledge, information and advice- particularly for parents who know very little about trains but need to buy for a train enthusiast.
We will definitely be back!

Very packed huge selection of used stock, the owner has difficulty finding some things. The prices can be high.

My father in law is in his 90’s and recently visited this shop, the shop owner was very knowledgeable and talked to my father in law for a considerable amount of time and managed to locate everything that he wanted for his train project. My father in law is still speaking about this shop days after visiting so it must have been a wonderful experience. He will be visiting again very soon. Thank you Northfields for making a mature gentlemen very happy. Not many shops or service like this left.x

It's hard to know how to review this unique shop. If shop is the right word. The owner is an extremely nice and fair man. He's not interested in making any real money. His shop is in part a way for him to help hobbyists get into and enjoy their hobby. They do repairs for locos for next to no money ( though you have to wait a while). They sell a bit of anything train related though prices vary from ridiculously overpriced and brand new to a second hand steal, that is if you can find or see anything you want. This leads me to the other side of this business. There is so much stock you can't fit in the shop! As such browsing is limited to what you can see from the 2 square metres of carpet available and you enter at your own risk as boxes are stacked precariously everywhere. The owner however, has a reasonable knowledge of where to find something so if you know what you want, even roughly. Ask and he'll dig out a selection if he can. This shop for is a must see for two reasons. 1 you've never seen another shop like it. 2 The owner is a great guy to chat to if you love model railways.

A wonderful shop, with character of its own and a kind & helpful owner. A vast amount of stock, and masses of choice. While it appears cluttered, there's a method in the madness, though I'd recommend asking the owner to find something a day or so before you're likely to want it.
The one thing that you ought to know is that it's not a shop designed for browsing. I'd suggest you go with some kind of idea of what you want. Witek, the owner, is a good, knowledgeable man, and will always try to help you find something that will fit your needs.
Cash only, due to the small scale, but there is an ATM within a minute's walk at the nearby Sainsbury's.
I'd absolutely recommend this shop. It's been the source of hours of delight and plenty of wonderful finds for me.

I bought a great Airfix model from here. Shop owner a real Gent. Shame about the clutter but I will be back for more. Suggest if you are looking for something to call the day before. But don't be put off he deserves the custom

A potential gold mine but more importantly a brilliant owner. Looks like chaos but there’s method in the madness and the owner is incredibly willing to chat and assist on your literal search through his huge collection. Very few shops like this remain. Great to support potentially one of the last in the line. Go in with half an idea and support a high street model shop.

I have been going to this amazing shop for about 4 years. Yes a little cluttered but it adds to the atmosphere. The owner is always helpful and congenial and their is nothing he doesn't know about model railways. For enthusiasts it is well worth a visit.

There's something about this shop, going into it is like stepping back in time. In a good way. Yes, it's cluttered and there's no way to see everything but that's part of its charm. 'Aladdin's cave' is the expression that springs to mind. Predominately for railway enthusiasts, it sells model cars, buses, planes, Airfix kits, books, even spotted an Interceptor from UFO. Worth a visit, if you're not claustrophobic.

I went in with some money to spend but with nothing in mind. I thought that I'd be able to browse the shop for an impulse buy, my mistake. Very cluttered shop and got the impression that the owner didn't really want to sell anything.
Need to go there with a shopping list.
Could be a real goldmine.

Not many model shops left but this is the best for your parts, if you are into model aeroplane or car you have to check this place before any. The person serving you is very helpful. You won't be dissapointed.

An unforgettable experience in this cluttered but charming shop where this passionate owner will always find what you need. Really enjoyable to still find small business like this one !

Great little shop, and I do mean little. There's so much stock, that you really need to wait for the other customer to come out! Cash only I believe. Run by a lovely man.

Lots of 2nd hand & New items for sale. Boxes & boxes of stuff everywhere, looks like complete chaos.. Knowledgeable owner though. Enjoyed my visit rummaging through boxes.

What a great shop and owner so helpful. We chatted for about half hour on all things trains. I will be going to this shop again when I’m next in London.

This is an Aladin's cave for those hard to find hobby items. The prices are very good and the Gentleman who owns it is a real gent indeed.
