Reviews of Chilli Padi
I. C.
📍Chilli Padi, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Another Malaysian Restaurant in Newcastle, this spot is clearly a favourite amongst locals. I hear that the founder happens to be from Sibu, a town in Sarawak.
It was lovely to have food resembling home. With so many dishes to choose from, I had a hard time deciding on what I had to try.
The ‘Aubergine & Sliced Fish with Rice’ was delicious. Thick clear sauce, generous in amount, with large slices of fish pieces fried in batter.
My friend loved the ‘Mango Tofu’. Savoury and sweet, the dish was lovely. The vegetarian curry, however, felt a little blend. Perhaps, to cater to the general tongues, spices here have to be a little mellowed.
How nice it is to be reminded of home once again through cuisine served here.
*the food prepared here are from halal sources

First time after hearing good things. So to start the resteraunt itself doesn't look up too much, nothing fancy at all. Lots of Malaysian drinks but no elaboration on the menu as to what they are. Staff are pleasant enough, now onto the food. All the dishes didn't come together however there wasn't much of a wait between them but I'd prefer to be served my sides and mains at once . The food it's self was sooo tasty 😋 I opted for the smoked chicken which I was recommended and it was delicious! The size difference between the starter and main version isnt much either! I got salt and chilli chips and king prawn also. My friend got the Chong Qing Spicy chicken and this was not for the faint hearted 🌶🌶🌶 my god so flavoursome but red hot and I like spice... there is sooo much on the menu so I would go back to try more stuff, the food was Fab! They have a decent size veggie menu also .

Tasty nasi goreng kampong and Squid belacan. The egg fried rice was expensive for a small bowl. Staff didn't give us a long time to think of what to order because the kitchen is closing at at approximately 15:30.
C. T.
I should've went for the chicken bites instead of the wings because the bites looked flavoursome and juicy, whilst the wings were somewhat plain with the spicy sauce.
Got beef rendang with rice and it came with a very healthy portion. Was nice and very spicy.
Not a fan of the 100x Malaysian drink.

Incredible food and an amazing amount of choice from the menu. I will be back sorely on the food menu as the customer service was absolutely shocking. My booking was on Saturday night at 19:30, which I understand is a busy time however, I arrived early and was shown my table while I waited for my friends, I waited 15 minutes before my friends arrived and not once was I approached by a member of staff to take a drinks order or if I was okay. Once my friends arrived after another 15minutes we flagged a waitress down our self to place our order. Half of a meal was placed on our table with no words, our drinks hadn't arrived at this point and no other meals were brought to our table. After 5 minutes of waiting our drinks were slammed onto the table by staff, no communication said while this happened and shortly after our food arrived. No staff approached up through our meal, no one asked how our meal was, did we need anything else, we were completely ignored. We finally had to flag a waitress down again to pay our bill. It's a shame really as it ruined the whole evening.

A restaurant of it's own kind. Never fails to impress with their majestic taste of Malaysian food. Fantastic
E. L.
Ordered the Malaysian style mee goreng and Nasi Lemak. Good portion size thus value for money, however, the fried chicken in the nasi lemak was overcooked hence it was very dry and tough, the anchovies wasn't the crispy kind but rather the chewy kind. Mee goreng taste great though!
D. D. A.
Overall we were happy and satisfied with the foods. Loved the Malay Char Kueh Tiaw & Mee Goreng, curry laksa was alright but not the authentic taste we expected, the only disappointment was the Ice Bandung which seemed having a taste that making the Bandung didn’t taste like Bandung.
B. Q.
Beautiful staff. So friendly. The food was tasty, totally enjoyed it. Portions were good and the fair pricing
V. W.
Chilli Padi serves authentic and delicious Mayalsian food. The food is top notch and the service is so quick. They have a wide variety of dishes including lots of vegetarian dishes. I'd highly recommend the chilli padi mango sauce and ma po tofu!
m. 히.
I think the portions of the food are really good. The taste is also good. But I find this place overrated. I don't find it as special and good as I thought it to be but it was okay. The prices are really high though. The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice. Overall its nice to go once in a while but not regularly. I ordered all of this and it cost me around £130 in the picture. The fired rice was not to my expected level it did lack a lot of flavours quite a few flaws in taste for the other dishes as well...
G. V.
One of the best Chongqing chicken in the UK,
I have tried this dish in many cities in the UK and the one from this restaurant is one of my favourites. Fragrant and spicy 🔥🔥🔥
L. S.
Had a just eat delivery from here, arrived on time, i ordered Chicken Satay On Skewers and Lamb Flank Curry Hot Pot with Jasmine Rice! Satay Skewers were tasty, Hot Pot was nice too, loved the sauce meat was ok i would order a better cut of meat next time, would still recomend 😁👌
L. S.
Where do I start. This was absolutley amazing. I cannot wait to return. Smoked chicken and the M17 prawn dish were absolukey to die for.
t. n.
Food is genuinely authentic here, the flavours are what I’d expect to try in Malaysia ❤️ Nasi Lemak & CF7 dish was really tasty & flavoursome
Kong poa chicken starters was also really flavoursome & tasty
Wasn’t a fan of the lemon grass fried chicken wings as it tasted a little on the dry side. Overall would easily come back here
M.
Food is greaaat! Service is greaaat ! However in one of the staff is having cold. Check it in case she got Covid.
R. G.
I love their food.. only decent SE Asian place in newcastle
S. R.
Loved this place,
Food was so tasty. Beautifully presented.
Great vibes.
Well looked after
M. R.
We had the salt and pepper chips, the szechuan chicken hot pot and my mate had the biggest sea food plate of prawns, scallops and callimari , I've ever seen.
And we had jasmine rice.
The food was even better than we remembered.
The chips were a huge portion of spicy goodness with crunch chilli flakes, spring onion and a taste of lime. I'd say these are the best I've tasted.
My hot pot was not as big as it used to be, but, still massive. The dried red chilli's had been re hydrated in oil, making them chewy and tasty, where they used to be dry and just flavouring for the sauce. The chicken thigh was cooked to perfection with the garlic and the lemongrass.
So tasty.
Service was quiet, respectful and lovely.
If you've been, it's better.
If you haven't been, go immediately.
It's brilliant.
Thank you Chilli Padi.
G. W.
Very nice food, big portions so could probably share one main dish between two people and share sides. Would definitely visit again
C. T.
Absolutely authentic, super tasty, good portion sizes, value for money, no longer bring your own bottle.
M. R.
Really really good. Keep up the good work. Fantastic staff. The place looks a bit dated but the food speaks volumes.
M. H.
Absolutely fabulous! Great food and reasonable prices. Very quick service and they accept cards too!
K. T.
Casual, friendly place - multicultural, laid back...you could be in South East Asia. Make sure you know what you want to order and you won't be disappointed. Portions are on the generous side so be aware 😀 Service is friendly but efficient and prices are reasonable...plus it's BYOB if you drink alcohol, a full range of soft drinks available if not. Can't wait to come back!
F. S.
An excellent Malaysian restaurant.
There's plenty of choice on the menu, with lots of authentic Malaysian (and other Asian) dishes, and prices are decent considering the generous portion sizes (drinks a tad bit expensive though).
The food came out pretty quickly, and it was fantastic - full of flavour and spice, good ingredients, nicely cooked. Try the laksa seafood curry soup noodles, or the mee goreng (though everything was delicious).
The staff were lovely - friendly and helpful, despite seeming a bit overworked (Covid-related staffing shortages, probably).
Overall, highly recommended. Looking forward to returning and trying all of the other things on the menu I couldn't fit last time!
J.
Authentic and great quality. Being Chinese myself means it is hard to find restaurants that serve authentic tastes to far East Asian food rather than a modified westernised recipe with too much sauce or sugar. Chilli Padi did it just right. Such a gem, I'm so glad my friend brought me here. The Laksa chicken noodles were sooooo good. Spicy enough to make me ask for extra water but friendly enough for my non-Chinese friend to help herself for more servings. Reasonable prices too. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to try real far East Asian food in Newcastle.

Amazing food.. We always come here when we are in Newcastle and are never disappointed. The food is fresh and delicious with a good variety to cater for everyone's taste, staff are helpful and knowledgable with the menu to help if your unsure, you might have a little wait for a table as it is busy most days but definitely worth the wait. they don't sell alcohol but you can take your own there's is a tesco just around the corner plus parking is nearby. Highly recommended you try this place.
M. M. A.
Food was nice, had malaysian maggi with chicken, and enjoyed the environment. Also was nice to be able to try different malaysian drinks which haven't had before
B. E.
Loved the food in here. The portion sizes are very generous. We took a doggy bag home at the end of the night. If you want a drink with your meal you'll have to take your own as they're not licensed.
A. S.
Tremendous food at a great price. Service is very fast but could be a little more attentive. But for food this tasty, this cheap it's hard fault. Worth noting portions are very large.
J. T.
A good Malaysian restaurant.
Happy to find a place that doesn't dumb down the spiciness or the authentic taste.
Service was good, and food selection included a few dishes different to standard Malay restaurants.
D. C.
Large variety of Malaysian food, very quick service. The Szechuan sliced fish in chilli oil is an intimidatingly large dish, not sure I would have it again. The nasi lemak was enjoyable, but the sambal was too sweet. Tried their 'oily rice' which is infused with pandan, garlic and ginger - definitely try it. Pretty good overall, worth a second visit.
S. B.
Great place to eat authentic Malaysian food. The food was lovely, went for their Malay Kungpo and it tasted absolutely amazing. Staff are very kind and welcoming.
Only problem is that seating and tables are closely arranged, looked as if I was sharing a table with other customers. However, couldn't fault food and service.
M. Z.
Toooooo many options but huge portions! It’s HALAL and the food tastes amazing.
D. G. C.
My first time in a Malaysian restaurant and the experience was amazing. The food is very tasty. The noodles soup is very good, with just the right amount of spiciness to enjoy without losing its excellent flavor. Also the staff is attentive and friendliness. I recommend.
M. F. L.
Went there TWICE in one day (my first visit to Newcastle too). Authentic, delicious Malaysian food served in generous portions. Nasi lemak - sambal was great. Got an extra portion of sambal for free when I requested it too. Teh tarik was good and rich. Laksa was not too heavy, good balance of flavours. Prawn noodle soup was the real deal. Savoury, rich prawn stock really hit all the right notes. Spicy enough for me - but not too much for my Northern-born friend! Friendly staff too. Overall great place.
x. c.
I've ordered their Rendang Chicken with rice and it tasted good!! I'm a Malaysian student and this dishes had brought me back to my homeland. It was a little bit spicy and I took away at the end because the portion was too big for me. It was 17.5GBP for two meals.
x. r.
Ordered two dishes with my friend. The tastes of beef and vegetables were fabulous. Malaysien and Thai cuisine. The only thing I don’t like is that they accept cash only. As a person who seldom bring money but bring card, I bothered to go out to draw money in a chilling night...
A. L. F.
The staff are super friendly and really knowledgeable about their menu and the food is the best South East Asian food I've had outside of South East Asia!
B. P.
Food was amazing, staff are absolutely lovely. If you want some authentic Malaysian food then this is the spot to go!
S. P.
Consistently excellent authentic Malaysian food. Great staff. Well priced. Bathroom facilities not great and a bit of a let down that they store stock in both the entrance seating area and the bathroom area.
t. a.
Authentic Malaysia food, we enjoy the food here. Can’t imagine they can cook that much malaysia dish. Is a must visit restaurant here.
S. C.
Great experience. Nasi Lemak craving was fulfilled.. Great place. Perfect Location...
R. R.
Decent selection of food and drinks popular in Malaysia and the region around. Always got for the Nasi Goreng Pataya. Can request dishes to be made spicier. Staff is very helpful. At the time of the review, the place didn't serve alcohol.
V. S.
Very good food. Always visit when in Newcastle. Friendly staff and big portions
M. A.
Grate food, big portions, fair price and friendly staff, i’ll come again.
I.
I wouldn’t normally eat here (I’m a bit of a fussy eater and can’t handle hot spices!) but was invited by a friend.
I asked the waiter for recommendations for something vegetarian and not spicy… but ended up with spicy noodles.
It was difficult to get a hold of staff but eventually did to ask for something else as it was too spicy for me to eat.
They said the kitchen was closed but kindly made me another dish with no spice.
They were really kind and explained that the original waiter was new.
If I wasn’t such a fussy eater I’d probably go back.
J. N.
Really good Malaysian and Chinese food. The laksa and spicy tofu are delicious. One of fave places to go in Newcastle
d. d.
The food is amazing. Friendly and helpful staff. I'll be going back again and again.
K. H.
Lovely food, brilliant staff, excellent service. Make sure you know what you are ordering. If you are confused about any item on the menu feel free to ask the staff. Portions are huge, so share the dish unless you are a shark.
J. V.
One of the best places I've been in a long time. The noodles are out of this world. And so much! It's hard to get through, so make sure you come hungry.
A. C.
Ok I loved the place. There as tasty food involved. Salt and chilli prawns then sliced fish with ginger and spring onions with a side of noodles hit the spot. Not used to Malaysian food so had to read the menu and look at pictures. Staff were friendly and split the bill so our family could all pay a bit. Would ho back to try other stuff.
A. M.
I ordered from Chilli Padi through Uber eats last Saturday. I'd heard great things so was really excited! Unfortunately the delivery took over 2 hours which was really disappointing as the restaurant didn't give any updates at all and I was left waiting. By the time the food arrived It was quite late and whilst I can't knock the food at all (it tasted nice), I was disappointed with the whole experience and lack of communication. Perhaps they can update the app to reflect the true delivery time so people don't have to wait hours in the future. The restaurant use their own delivery drivers and apparently they had a shortage which I also understand, It just would have been good to have been told this.
A. M.
Great food and service. The portion sizes of the mains were great for the price and could easily fed 2. Food was full of flavour.
A. A.
Ordered 10 different dishes for everyone to try. Everything was on point again! Been here many times and it refuses to disappoint! Hats off to Charles and the team!!
M. S. A.
Exquisite Asean menu with good price. Friendly staff with ample eating space.
N. S.
Super tasty, massive portions, great food! Service was great, very fast didn't wait long for my food. Decent prices
D. S.
Food is fantastic, fast service, most unassuming restaurant in Newcastle. Great find, and thoroughly recommend it
H. T.
Lovely place and food! Very authentic malaysian cuisine.
H. c.
I went for the first time and I left feeling like I made the right choice. The food was amazing, the sever was awesome, he offered excellent recommendations and explained everything perfectly, and to finish, the portion sizes were so good, even 4 people can share and leave full.
E. D.
This city centre outlet serves amazing halal Malaysian food. Visiting from Scotland and wanting a bite to eat, I ordered kung po chicken and fried beef kueh teow. Both were very tasty.
I did ask for spicy but in hindsight I shouldn't have as it took the heat levels right up. But nevertheless it was still enjoyable.
A. Great place to sit in or take out and all Halal.
T. M.
Malaysian restaurant in Newcastle
Today I order Nasi Lemak I love the paste ❤️ so yummy I will come back for this dish soon
But the portion of rice is too big for me 😅
Crispy shrimps with salted egg york becomes my second dish fav boiled rice is the best couple for this
Cash only for this restaurant
M. A.
One of the best places to eat in Newcastle, amazing menu, and you will never be disappointed no matter what you choose
J. D.
Amazingly tasty and proper authentic Malaysian restaurant. The service was very attentive and Ivo, the waiter, was impeccable in his great customer service. Coming back again for more tasty food!
A. F.
I've only had a takeaway from here so I cannot comment on the service but the food is amazing, large and generous portions, seasoned to perfection and really comforting. My only gripe is the expensive delivery fee.
K. C.
Great tasting food, good variety
E. M.
Great food, nice seating and very friendly staff. Relatively cheap and we love the variety of Asian food and noodles they offer. Add to all of that, it's Halal.
J.
Great food, just go and you won't regret it
S. A.
A very good Malaysian cuisine in China town Newcastle
A. F.
Absolutely brilliant experience! Authentic Malaysian food. Very tasty and generous portions too.
G. G.
Friendly staff, quick service and tasty food.
A. M.
Authentic Malaysian food. Friendly, relaxed and fast!
P.
Delicious food and uber fast service! Loved every dish that we've ordered. Do try their smoked chicken and hainan chicken. The portions were content for two persons! Value for the money.
O. R.
the food is good, and ready very fast.
A. 5.
Always superb 👌
S. K. W.
Got there and there’s a sign says they don’t open til 4:30pm very disappointed as I was looking forward for Asian food for the whole week
A. R.
An excellent restaurant and equally good takeaway! The food is exceptional - far better than your standard chinese-type takeaway. Great portion sizes, everything freshly cooked and tasty. Hot and sour soup is the BEST I’ve ever had - it should be on everyone’s order from here. This restaurant deserves support, now more than ever that it’s relying solely on takeaway as well. Give it a try - you won’t be disappointed!
N. H.
Fantastic food and excellent service. Will definitely go back
R. H.
Very nice Laksa, best I had in the area but not the best I've has anywhere.
S. S.
Decent spot for local Malaysian food experience:)
m. a.
Good food but a bit pricy
C. M.
Great food - very authentic. Watch out though- 1 🌶 on menu really does mean hot!
N. G.
The food is amazingly good and highly recommend Penang prawn noodles
S. J.
Fabulous place..great food, good taste. Veg mix curry was tasty and very large bowl....good for 3.
Stii have had much better stir fried veggie dish, so below average.
Soft noodles too good taste.
But alas! Way too much onions /spring onions in each and every dish spoils the fun.
H. D.
Delicious food, great prices, friendly staff. BYOB.
B. C.
Really enjoyed the food, Chilli & garlic squid was a treat beautifully cooked. As were all the dishes we chose. Take your own alcohol pay a small charge and they only accept cash payments. Will definitely be making a return visit soon.
R. S.
Was recommended this spot by a couple of people. Got takeaway delivered and it was on time and fast. The rendang was spicy but also delicious. Also had the chilli squid and gyoza were also fantastic. Overall really impressed and will be ordering again. Also generous portions.
A. V.
This is a nice place to try Malaysian cuisine, they also have a few Thai dishes in the menu. The service is always very nice, with the waiters are genuinely trying to help you to decide on the order. The portions are quite big, so it is usually one dish meal.
They do not accept any card, take the cash with you.
M. T.
Good location. Good service. We were seated quickly. Once we ordered the food, we were amazed at house swiftly all good the food came out of the kitchen. Within 5 to 10 mins. I was almost convinced that they'd put the food on the wrong table. But no. The food was ours and it really was that quick.
Tables may have been a little too close together. Other than that, a great place.
O. S. (.
Lovely place! The food I got was like an omelette with tomato rice, prawn and veggies in the middle and was delicious. I also got a side of won tons but it was a bit too much to eat! The mains are definitely enough to fill you up. My friend also likes the Malaysian coffee/tea.
S. O.
It was ok I have lived in kl for many years and they had run out of tea and the food was mediocre but the price is not too bad / local Chinese Malay I think cook so authentic but quality of food was average so don't expect much
M. S. (.
such an amazing little gem of a place In Newcastle. if you have never heard or been here, you are missing out. food is delicious, wonderful owner and great staff. quick service and wonderful atmosphere. you can bring your own drinks too.
N. C.
Had a really great meal with amazing food but the icing on the cake is the service. All the people who work there are so attentive and are interested in ensuring you have a good experience and are happy with whole time you spend in the restaurant. Our friend from Newcastle had been talking up Chilli Padi before our visit and it didn't disappoint. Don't pass it by if in Newcastle
S. A.
Lovely restaurant. Food was cooked and served very quickly. Lovely food too.
C. W.
New people coming, believe me, food rations are huge here. Quality-price relation is very good, and it's full of asian people eating here, what talks very good about this place. Our food was very nice. We hadn't have to wait for our orderings, and everything was fine.
I will come back
M. A.
I cannot get enough of this place. The food is delicious, from the fried prawns, salt and chilli fries and prawns, Chong Qing to the rice dishes, you can’t go wrong.
H. Y.
Tasty food, prices are above average
J. R.
Been a fan of this place for years now. They've recently moved to a larger premises and are under new management. But by Jove the standard of food has not diminished.
Just excellent excellent Chinese Malaysian food. Plus they now deliver. If we didn't now live in Edinburgh we'd be ordering Chilli Padi weekly.
S. A. R. S. A. B. B.
The food is extremely good & value for money. I love the fried kangkong with tiram sauce and seafood Tom Yam soup. I strongly recommend if anyone who are looking for Malaysian food. The service is fast & the staffs are very friendly.
A. A.
Delicious food-absolutely satisfying! The staff are excellent ,very welcoming and best service. Highly recommended👍🏼
L. F.
Everything i've eaten here has been absolutely delicious. The service is excellent, and it's fantastic value!. Also I have a nut allergy and the staff are great at checking the order and making sure it doesn't contain nuts, without doing what some restaurants do - and hand you a really limited menu, despite the majority of stuff on the main menu not listing that it contains nuts...which drives me mad.
I cannot recommend this place enough
H. R.
Good location, nice atmosphere, food good but for the price would have expected quality to be slightly better. However food all very tasty, generous servings, great choice.
To note they don't take cards or serve alcohol. Toliets on the small side to put it nicely (had to climb over toliet bowl in ladies to open door to get out).
However would definitely go again.
j.
Absolutely incredible food the portion sizes are huge aswell and the variety on the menu is amazing. Must visit
J.
Really lovely food each time and never waiting long for food. Can get busy so worth booking and cash only which I always forget till I'm there! You can bring your own alcohol too. Definitely worth a try
A. N.
As a Malaysian, this is the perfect restaurant to grab my comfort food; nasi lemak. The portions are big, and very tasteful. 5/5 would go again. 👍
H.
One of the must try in newcastle. If you like Asians food here is the place to go. Quite authentic malaysian food. I often bring my friends here to try and they all love it. Not only that, me and my friends often hangout here occasionally.
The only problem i have is that it is "cash only" so be prepared and withdraw some cash.
Aside from that occasionally i was served with cold fried chicken. But other than that the taste is authentic and great.
P. B.
Went here with some work colleagues on the recommendation of one of them who frequents it often and it was excellent. A very large menu with the snacks being the starters(you could have had these as main meals). The range of dishes are mains, rice dishes, noodles, soups and chef specials and the dishes are quite hot taste wise. However there are mild dishes and you can also ask them to tone down the heat. Once you have ordered the food it's in front of you in 5 minutes.
What you can't eat you can request to take home as the portions are HUGE.
Well priced a main averaging £9
This is a bring you own drink restaraunt and no corkage charge. They do sell soft drinks.
It is also CASH ONLY.
This restaraunt is a must go to but I would not suggest as a romantic meal out.i
H. C.
The most amazing choices of food. I live the Duck in Chilli mango sauce and Kung Pu King Prawns. Got to say the Malyasian style curry is the nicest curry ever. All the dishes other customers have look amazing. Generous portions. Mmmmm delicious
A. G.
Lovely staff and the food is always top quality. I love eating here. One of my favorite places in town. Prices are cheap too... Never been disappointed. Great new location now too
S. W.
Great laksa, quick service. The gyoza and kung po chicken was good too. Beware that the laksa is a little spicier than usual though so. If you're not good with spicy food I would recommend ordering something else.
C. L.
A little gem of a place - nice cosy atmosphere, I went here with family and friends for a nice lunch and was so satisfied with the seafood and curry dishes as well as squid noodle soup. The curry and beef was superbly aromatic and service was great. Thank you to Anson who was fantastic.
H. S.
I liked it here. I mistakingly ordered a dish containing seafood when I wanted a vegetation dish and they immediately amended the dish to my request. So, good service and good food. Restraint was nice and clean. Looked modern too. Recommended.
A.
Best Malaysian food I’ve ever had with a incredibly friendly and informative staff when enquiring about the content of certain dishes!
R. S.
Fabulous menu full of Thai favourites with plenty of choice for vegetarians too.
Salt and chilli chips pack a punch.
Excellent value. I haven't tried a dish I didn't like yet.
M. K.
Great food, will be back soon!
T. E.
Probably my fave Asian restaurant in Newcastle. Unbelievably good food. Everything is delicious, and well balanced. It's cash-only, and byob too, so don't forget to hit the atm and off-license before your feast.
EDIT: March 2019. Had another spectacular meal here tonight. We tried the Clay-pot Beef with Ginger Spring Onion Sauce, which was an instant new fave. The beef was super tender, and it's just a cozy, well-balanced dish all around. We also ordered an old fave, the always-awesome Ching Qing Spicy Chicken (which I've elsewhere seen called Chongqing Spicy Chicken, or Mala Chicken, or La Zi Ji, or Sichuan Spicy Chicken, or hide-and-seek chicken). We love the spicy, crispy-crunchy, numbing aspects of the dish, but please be careful with it - I recommend you always get it with another dish, so you don't get burned out on the heat and numbing effect of the Sichuan peppercorns and the chillis! It's delicious, but it's very potent, and for maximum enjoyment, you should be able to give your palate a li'l break in between bites of it. The clay-pot beef went perfectly with it, imho. We also ordered the Salted Crispy Chicken Bites, which were perfectly crispy and satisfying too. We should've only ordered one rice between the two of us, because we had a full bowl left over to take home.
As a side note, this was the fastest meal they've ever cooked for me - we ordered the food, and then my friend immediately popped out to the off-license just next door, and the food arrived about 2 minutes later, before he'd even gotten back! It took all my strength to wait till he returned before attacking the deliciousness waiting in front of me :P
The place isn't heap, but I think it's worth every damn penny. Seriously, it's probably still the best Asian restaurant in Newcastle, I think.
K.
Amazing food, staff, and atmosphere. Lovely decoration. Would highly reccomend. Good for authentic malay food and a few other things. It is cash only though to remember to hit the cashpoint before you come in!
E. S.
Usually quite a happening place. Staff are warm and friendly. Food is always great! Recommend the butter chicken, salted fish fried rice, and morning glory veg with blachan. It's BYOB as well, which means I am free to pair my food with any beverage I have.
Y. E.
Love this restaurant! Great food, huge portions, fast service, byob. Cash only. My favourite meals are nasi lemak, smoked chicken, nasi goreng pattaya, beef rendang, and seafood laksa. I have tried the Chong Qing spicy chicken and it is very spicy! One of the family's favourite places for a celebration dinner though we have learned to avoid match days.
G. R.
Each time I am in Newcastle, I always dine in this place. Amazing food, pleasant staff and good atmosphere. Just perfect for a good filling dinner for a couple's or group. Prices are good too!
M. H.
Always amazing food and service. Love this place.

We arrived at 18:00 on a Thursday without a reservation and the pair of us were seated without issue as the place wasn't that busy. The decor and ambience is functional and no-frills and it has an atmosphere akin to that of a side-street food vendor, which it kinda is!
Myself and my date both ordered noodle dishes and the food arrived promptly. While not big on presentation, the food was tasty and wholesome and a step up from your usual takeaway fare. I had a seafood noodle dish and although it was slightly too salty, it was tasty, with a nice hint of spice and included a decent amount of prawns and squid. My date ordered a vegan tofu dish and requested it to be made spicy, which they duly obliged with. While the dish was very spicy, you could still taste the ingredients (according to my date - it was too spicy for me!). However, on the downside, her dish did have a large amount of chopped onion included in it, which was a little disappointing and a typical 'padding out' tactic which retaurants use to maximise their profits.
However, one big thing which did let down the dining experience was the attitude of the staff. While the service itself was prompt, we felt under a lot of pressure to order quickly, eat quickly and vacate quickly. While deciding what to order, we were asked no less than four times within a space of 10 mins if we would like to order, despite telling the waiter the first time to give us 10 mins to make our minds up. I finished eating my meal first, so one of the waitresses came up to our table and asked my date if she would like the remainder of her main boxing up to take away, when she was very clearly still enjoying it!
While I understand that we didn't pre-book and the place was filling up, we were still paying customers and should have been treated as such. Wherever we would have been treated differently if we had pre-booked, I cannot say. It is also worth noting that they only accept cash payments, which is very odd in this day and age.
In summary, decent food at a reasonable price, but let down by service which has it's priorities a little bit wrong. Go if you fancy a quick bite and an authentic side-street dining experience, but don't expect any frills. I would go back again, but will probably be a bit more firm with the waitering staff next time around or pre-book.

Another fantastic meal in Chili Padi. Needed some spice after all of the Christmas food and it didn't disappoint. Chicken Satay and salt and chilli calamari were amazing. This was followed by king prawn Kung Po with dry noodles, again superb.
J. L.
Really nice food and staff were very helpful, going to check with the kitchen about the order as my wife has allergies. They allowed us to relax and enjoy the meal. Thank you!
F. T.
I love getting my Malaysian food fix every now and again, and this happened to be recommended by my brother who had visited previously. I ordered the chicken curry laksa which was quite flavourful with a good level of spice. My brother had the Hainanese chicken rice which came served with a bowl of clear soup, whilst my sister-in-law had the nasi lemak. All three dishes were pretty tasty, and it's always a good sign when the restaurant is filled with customers. The menu is pretty extensive and the portions are generous. I would visit again when I'm next up North :)
n. l.
Heard so much about this place for ageeees so me and a few friends went there on Thursday. Strangely enough I rang a friend asking what he got as I seen it on his instagram.😂 We ordered a variety of foods but me in particular chose the salt and chilli calamari snack, salt and chilli king prawn main, sautéed beef in chilli sauce main and the mixed meat pan fried noodles. ALL were delicious and I will be back 100000%. I must also say the waitress with the glasses on was very attentive and helpful so props to her for being spot on! Also the gentleman who brought the food out was very nice as well so definitely fully satisfied or should I say fatislife I was. I have to say Chilli Paddi is at the top of my list with 1 or 2 other places as a go to for food by far!
Thank you Chilli Paddi for making my experience a one to remember!
L. J.
Amazing food and friendly and helpful service. Great vegitarian selection with gluten free options. Staff really helpful when explaining I have celiac and went to good effort to ensure non cross contamination.
W. W.
Good ambience. Varieties of Malaysians food. Strongly recommended to bring friend & family. The price is reasonable & staffs are very friendly. The service is also very fast.
J. F.
Love the Maylasian style crispy chicken. Seems a rather popular restaurant as when I went to collect my food it was absolutely rammed.
E.
Great food and drinks options.
S. Z.
An absolute favourite with us in Newcastle, and the best Malaysian food I've had outside Malaysia. The rendang, aubergine hot pot, butter squid and chilli prawns are great.
R. S. Z.
One of the best restaurants in Newcastle for the spice lover.. well priced large portions and exceptionally fast service.. give it a go u wont regret it..
L. B. ভ. ব.
Nice food and big portions
K. M.
Food was really good, bottled beer a little expensive £4.50 for half a pint more or less..and if you're thirsty! should have draught.
I. A.
Talk about spicy, the dishes were laced with dry red chilies. Unfortunately, the beef was dull of fat and very chewy. I'd go gain but avoid busy times, they gave our table to someone else and we waited 30 minutes.
A. F. Q. A.
Ordered the right amount as I don't like wastage and daughters don't usually eat much, service was quick and staff were friendly.
K. B.
Nothing to shout about but service was good
R. S.
Amazing food and excellent service
C. C.
You can have very very spicy food
M. M.
Nice Malaysian restaurant.
a. w.
Fantastic food at reasonable prices
For 6 of us with starters and mains ot wasbonly £106.
Beware though, they don't have an alcohol licence or a card machine, so ash only.
L.
Staff are really friendly, food is UNREAL, they do the best salt & chilli chips I have ever had, if you have not been you are missing out.
S. Z. A.
Absolutely delightful everytime.
Try something new each time and each time it's a taste sensation. Been going here a while and will continue to go.
Excellent service, friendly staff. Book in advance to avoide waiting for a table.
A. A.
Great taste and portion size
A. D.
Doesn't do Malaysian food Justice, never order the rendang...its appalling...
The nasi goreng kampung is good, roti canai is good...anything simple is excellent....those complex food like rendang, curry is questionable
C. O.
Honestly a great place for food
A. D.
Basic, but great food, biģgest problem is choosing what to eat, as the menu is extensive, some starters and meals are substantial, ideal for sharing. Prices as you would expect (reasonable). Don't forget to take your own drinks, they don't sell alcohol, but they will provide glasses and ice.
F.
Can not rate this place enough, have eaten here probably 100 times and always fantastic. The sides are just as delicious with big portions
S. T.
A must try Malaysian restaurant in town.
d. h.
We ordered laksa noodle, fried rice pattaya, rujak, air bandung, and es teh tarik. We are from indonesia and familiar with malaysian food. So far, the laksa noodle and fried rice in chilli padi are the best laksa and fried rice we ever ate. Great experience!!!
