Reviews of St. Machar's Cathedral
J. G.
A place of history as well a place of worship. The cathedral gives a feel that takes us back to older times. There is a lot to read about the cathedral. You can enjoy the glass painting, the ceiling and the frames that are in the cathedral. There is a cemetery right outside, I must say, around the cathedral that has people buried from years ago. This is close to 20 mins drive from Aberdeen city. By walk it might take you an hour.
N. R.
Worth the visit for anyone interested in history, cathedrals, or architecture. It’s smaller than some cathedrals in the country, but its beauty does not disappoint. There were two guides who were very friendly and helpful.
R. W.
If you find yourself in Old Aberdeen, this Cathedral and Cemetery are a must stop for you. Here at Aberdeen's oldest building, you'll find quiet, history, gorgeous architecture, and a place to worship if you choose. The Cathedral was closed during our visit, but we spent at least an hour strolling the cemetery and visiting it's inhabitants, who btw, have been here for a very long time! It's worth your time to visit, stay awhile and watch the light change. What a feeling to spend so much time in a cemetery and for it to be empty of visitors our entire time, creepy, but damn cool. Highly recommend a visit and an hour.

My adult son and I spent a day in Aberdeen then went to St. Machar's the next morning for worship (6/12/22). What a remarkable church, full of beauty and history. We introduced ourselves before the service, to make sure it was ok, and we were welcomed with open arms. Attending the service was the highlight of our visit to Aberdeen.
M. K.
Wonderful cathedral with such a detailed history. Wonderful staff that are very knowledgable which really enriched our experience. Lovely gift shop where I was able to get some souvenirs for my family back home. I love that they still have service on Sundays, it’s not just a museum or historical landmark.
Y. Z.
I was amazed by this grand cathedral, especially the colorful glasses and the architecture. You could find the difference between the old Aberdeen and New Aberdeen from this Roman style cathedral. Moreover, the ceiling is also quite special and attractive!
S. T.
According to legend, St Machar founded a site of worship in Old Aberdeen in about 580 where the Cathedral sits today, has been rebuilt and renovated several times through the years and is looked after to this day (the roof actually just got finished, massive repairs that took a couple of years), and they’re extremely proud of the Cathedral and its history. There’s a few featyres of interesting features I’ll mention:
The heraldic ceiling within St Machar’s cathedral was built in 1520 from oak panelling and features 48 heraldic shields and coats of arms. The shield of Pope Leo X is in the centre surrounded by archbishops and bishops in order of importance. Some of these shields are Earls from all around Scotland, Saint Margaret of Scotland, James V of Scotland, Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire, Francis I of France, King Charles V of Spain, Henry VIII of England, Sigismund I of Poland, Christian II of Denmark and more.
There is also the Class II Pictish Cross Slab, aged around 600-843CE, likely closer to the 600’s as that would be around when the Cathedral was first built!
And finally, apparently part of William Wallace is buried within the grounds after he was executed in England and quartered, where his left quarter ended up in Aberdeen and is buried in the walls of the cathedral and is marked by a star on the wall.
Lots of history in one small place, from Pictish, to Scottish Wars of Independence, the Scottish Reformation, ancient carved wood, elaborate effigies, historically important individuals buried within the grounds, and is just utterly gorgeous. Especially in the spring when there’s loads of bluebell.
S. L.
Historical place to visit. The guide in the church is very informative and kind. We had a very good time over here with my parents.

This is a hidden gem next to Seaton Park. Free to have a look around (but you can leave a donation). The stain glass windows are amazing & the roof is fascinating. We were given a little leaflet that explained different aspects of the cathedral. A really peaceful & beautiful little stop whilst exploring old Aberdeen.

Hello St. Machar!
Please pardon my intrusion....
My name is Misha.
I was named for the Arch Angel.
(A naming I don't take lightly...)
I have been helping and advising a Ukraine refugee family that attends your church. Perhaps you already know them? (Nataly, Surgey and the mother)
There are members of this family that are struggling emotionally being displaced from their homeland. They litterally lost everything.
I ask on their behalf.... Please help them? They are strangers in a strange land. No friends and no other family.
I ask members of the congregation to please welcome them. Make friends with them.
Drench them in the traditions that are your church and your land.
Advise them.... as everything is strange to them. I can only ask you put yourself in their place?
What kind of help would you need?
They are far above average in decency.
I think they would make a grand addition to your church and community.
The Arch Angel hath delivered them to safety. He (and I) hope you can help make them feel whole again.
God Bless all.

I’m not particularly religious but I enjoy history and churches have a place. The history behind this church is really interesting and the grounds and surrounding area make for a fantastic walk to enjoy. The caretakers were very pleasant and helpful with some great knowledge of the building. It has great stained glass windows and a beautiful ceiling.
G. W.
Look folks if you love a place of worship the acoustics here are wonderful. If you love archaeology then the shape, stonework and engineering won't let you down. Love history then bring you notebooks and extra pens cause you've plenty writing.
There's all the usual so called dignitaries that are pushed. The famous ones. Which is nice and interesting. But I prefer the headstones of common largely forgotten people as sometimes I find a headstone with a more interesting story. Trust me. When you find that headstone you'll better understand.
I'm on the Find-a-Grave website where I've added such headstones.
S. R.
Amazing architecture and history. Very informative caretaker. The lights were mostly out when I went which I felt increased its charm
B. E.

Very nice place to learn about some history in Aberdeen, I had gone there to do a photoshoot with my friend and the staff were more than happy to let me and they told me a little about the cathedral and it's history, also a quite place if you need a place to pray in peace.

Old buildings are not everyone's cup of tea but I would urge you to make an exception just to see the astonishing decorated flat roof. The stained glass windows are beautiful and this working church has a good interactive screen. There is so much history in this building.
A. D.
Beautiful old church, with plenty of history and events. I would highly suggest just walking threw the kirkyard in and of itself.

E. K.
Under consturction but this Sunday they are going to be run. Good vibe inside, a great place to visit
M. R.
Delightful old Church / Cathedral located on the edge of Seaton Park near Old Aberdeen and the University. Small and unassuming for a Cathedral but seat of a Bishop so it earns the title. Admission is free and worth a few minutes of anybody's time.
R. B.
Visited several years ago. Magical time as we got a personal tour by the caretaker then, when standing before my great great grandfather's grave, a piper began playing and a wedding party arrived.
M. D.
Less overwhelming and more intimate than other Cathedrals I've visited and that adds a special charm. Surroundings are gorgeous - you walk out of the cathedtal straight into Seaton park.
Couldn't resist this rather unnerving sign at the entrance.
Very helpful and communicative host.
s. l.
Nice cathédrale ! Although de dis not get the chance to get inside.
G. G.
It's a 5 star cathedral but I went looking for my bishop as one often does when trying to work through the bigger issues and walked into hear by mistake remembered the bishops dont use the church since the 16th century and was sad to realise the bishop is over the road reminded daily of our past and the wars to keep god at the heart of Scotland and how the effects are still visible and confusing to the Scott's centuries after the wars.
Amazing grave yard not walked inside but I know I am going to recognise this kne when i do it's I can feel it
F. M.
Impressive wooden ceiling with embedded coats of arms.
I. G.
A lovely place. We really enjoyed it.
V. M.
Beautiful Cathedral in the heart of Old Aberdeen. Currently undergoing renovation so expect some scaffolding.
J. H.
A beautiful old church with original ceiling, visitors are welcome and there's a couple of leaflets that tell you more about the space. It's an active church but there's some interesting artefacts like the amazing stain glass window at the rear. Worth stopping for a quick look if you're in the area.

The ceiling is covered in crests from other places and the stained glass windows are really pretty. The grounds around the outside are kept in really good condition and looked really nice even in the wet. The pathway to the front entrance was a bit uneven so watch your step

A lovely church rich in history with wonderful stained-glass windows, ancient stone walls and the beautiful Seaton Park just a stone's throw away. Someone will be always there to welcome you with a smile and answer any questions you may have about the Cathedral. If you are visiting Aberdeen, this place should be on top of your list!

I regularly visited this church for Sunday service while I studied at Aberdeen university for a year. It may not be the biggest church in Aberdeen, but I can tell it is Aberdeen's most beautiful church. It has friendly congregation, lovely sunday service and sermon. Really a peaceful place to pray and worship. The church's music, combination great Henry Willis organ, choir voice and granite walls reverberation, just gave me a goosebumps every time. As now I have gone back home to Indonesia, I will miss this church.

(Translated) An old sacral building preserved in good condition. Surrounded by a historic cemetery. Very nice park and old historic part of Aberdeen nearby.
Upon entering the church, we are greeted in various languages (including Polish).
According to information from the Cathedral leaflet, the current building dates from 1350-520. The Cathedral owes its beauty and character to a large extent to the "Building Bishops".
The Scottish Reformation in 1560 contributed to the emptying of the eastern end of the Cathedral. The Bishop's Palace was demolished and the central tower collapsed in 1688, most of the stone being used to build other buildings in Old Aberdeen and beyond.
The settlement of 1690 ended the long-standing religious and political conflict between Episcopalianism and Presbyterianism, establishing the cult, order, and governance of the Church of Scotland as Presbyterian.
Polish visitors will be interested in the Renaissance heraldic ceiling from 1520, containing the coat of arms of King Sigismund I.

Według informacji z ulotki Katedralnej obecny budynek datuje się na lata 1350-520. Swoje piękno i charakter Katedra zawdzięcza w dużym stopniu „Budującym Biskupom”.
Szkocka reformacja w 1560 roku przyczyniła się do opustoszenia wschodniego krańca Katedry. Pałac Biskupi został wyburzony, a w 1688 runęła wieża centralna, z której większość kamienia została zużyta do budowy innych budynków w Old Aberdeen i poza jego granicami.
Ugoda w 1690 roku zakończyła wieloletni religijny i polityczny konflikt pomiędzy episkopalizmem a prezbiterianizmem ustanawiając kult, porządek oraz zarząd Kościoła Szkockiego jako prezbiteriańskiego.
Dla polskich zwiedzających interesujący będzie renesansowy sufit heraldyczny z 1520 roku, zawierający herb króla Zygmunta I.

(Translated) The cathedral takes its name from a 6th-century Celtic saint, Macarius, and continues to be called a cathedral although it is now only a church. It dates back to the end of the 13th century and was built in the same place where San Macario built a sanctuary; it has a particularly beautiful facade, flanked by two slender towers, its own small cemetery and a ceiling decorated with coats of arms and Gothic arches. Looking carefully at its facade you can see the defense loopholes, it was a fortress. Here rests David Welch , Aberdeen's highly regarded gardener.

(Translated) a good place for both visitors and vacationers, considering that there is a beautiful large piece of grass nearby with many trees, playgrounds, places to play and relax. I recommend the most especially the spring and summer season, when many places in the park shimmer in lively florists ..... greetings Tqilla from Aberdeen.
