Reviews of St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast

This was a special visit for me as it was the place where my grandparents married in 1953, to be able to see the aisle in all its glory and imagine the nerves and excitement my grandmother must've experienced walking towards my grandfather that day. The building from the outside is beautiful but the inside is incredible, though very cold when I visited (probably high heating costs). There is so much to take in and the history is accessible to everyone. Intricately carved chairs, pews and lecterns are dedicated to people with engraved brass plates. Artifacts are presented beautifully in glass cases with information on each item. A lovely touch is a tree on which you can hang a personal message. The organ is breathtaking with it's polished pipes on display. A thoroughly enjoyable visit.

I was surprised to find this is a modern Cathedral. It was dressed for a wedding later on the day I visited and so was at its very best. Extremely friendly young man on the kiosk desk was a pleasure to spend time with.
N. S.
Although, it was not that much old as I have seen some other cathedrals like 500yrs or 1000yrs old but still, old enough to sense the history and very fascinating as well.
Tickets are very cheap as well, just starting from £2 pp.

Amazing Cathedral. Lots of history in very informative let stalls around the inside. Everyone (2 adults & 3 kids 5,7&11) enjoyed our little tour.
Reccomend to all.
E. B.
Absolutely beautiful and definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. Tiny admission fee to view the entire Cathedral, but very pleased to know that it goes towards the maintenance of such a gorgeous piece of architecture and history. We walked around with a handy little leaflet and learnt an awful lot. Thanks for having us!
D. L.
A nice little place for silence and reflection. Not as old as standard cathedrals but still atmospheric.
D. N.
Relatively modern cathedral but a few lovely elements and bright
E. K.
Absolutely beauiful and stunning inside £5 to get ,in goes towards up keep of church , well worth it
M. G.
This is the only cathedral I've been to where they ask for an extremely modest fee to visit (2 pounds) and then explain exactly what the money is being used for. Every other cathedral I've visited in Ireland charged more than 2 pounds with no explanation, but the guide at the front was kind enough to educate us that the cathedral is built on wood foundation which is expanding/contracting and causing structural damage.
D. G.
This is a beautiful cathedral. We walked in a few minutes before close and the the two men staffing the entrance just let us enter and walk around for free. We were able to take a quick walk around and get some great pictures!
P. A.
I learnt quite a few things here, right from when I walked in. One of them: the pillars mean more than just a support for the cathedral superstructure; they are based on particular biblical doctrines/principles. And standing before the stained-glass "Creation Story" filled me with so much awe. Wished I could have stayed in the cathedral for much longer and soaked in a lot more of its
F. C.
It’s beautiful from outside as I couldn’t go in because it was closed. also has a small kids park on the side.
J. P.
What an exceptional building. I had the joy of being bridesmaid here for my beautiful best friends wedding. It is absolutely spectacular. ❤️
L. R.
A bit pricey entrance fee.
Beautiful ceiling and floor designs. The side chapels/naves are not to be missed.
Mixed feelings on the star wars spire suspended through the ceiling.
D. U. (.
I haven’t been inside but it looks impressive from outside
C. T.
Best to time your visit with the cathedral arts festival or culture night. Both great experiences that go beyond the religious. fabulous architecture, a lot of history and a modern management make this one of Belfast's go to tourist attractions.
A. W.
Absolutely breathtaking. You can walk into the gift shop area but must pay (5 pounds?) to see the rest of the cathedral. There is a student discount, which is so nice. If you enjoy history and amazing architecture, it's definitely worth the few pounds to get in. This cathedral is a must see in Belfast.
E. O.
Very interesting church. Great history behind and attention from volunteers was friendly and nutritive
S. O.
This is an absolutely breathtaking Church in the heart of Belfast City Centre. Their daily Choral Evensong service is a real treat, and I highly recommend it.
c. p.
Lovely building. You have to pay £5 to go further than the entrance barrier, but you get a handout with some information to do a self guided tour. It seems a bit expensive for the amount there is to see, but it was nice, with some lovely stained glass windows
G. B.
Beautiful building full of history. By chance a local choir was rehearsing when we visited, was a lovely experience. Definitely worth checking out and I'd recommend the audio tour, was only £5 for entry and the audio tour was no extra cost.
J. J.
Beautiful inside and out
J. S.
Beautiful cathedral great acoustics, atmosphere brilliant for concerts
P. V.
Beautiful cathedral, visited in st Patrick day and was not charged to get in.
A. M.
Wonderful service here on Sunday 29th May. Worth visiting.
P. S.
People need to realise this is a place of worship not just a tourist attraction
M. N.
Magical Vivaldi concert venue
G. B.
Such a great idea to host the event like a Belfast Fashion Week in this Cathedral. It looks fabulous from outside and inside
A. H.
Truly magnificent cathedral in the centre of Belfast
A. K.
Was here at a christening place is beautiful had a great time
e. p.
One of the most beautiful building in Belfast. It's said that it was build in the late 1700s.
The entry is free and if you are lucky you might get to hear the choir and the organs play.
Recommend!

Lovely coloured stone. Plenty of roman arches
E. M.
Beautiful cathedral not too far from town centre in the interesting cathedral district. A must and quick see in central Belfast
p. c.
You simply have to visit this epic and most beautiful building.
K. P.
Nice little spot. Staff was incredibly friendly and they had alot of war memorial tributes. Worth a look!
E. G.
It can be a cold due to high cielings but the acoustics are amazing if you are thinking of a concert ect.
C. D.
Beautiful Cathedral definitely worth a visit
P. M.
My daughters wedding was absolutely beautiful, music and choir excellent. Canon Mark and Johnny ireland.I couldn't thank them enough
J. C.
Wonderful, big cathedral. The architecture is staggering. To be able to watch a show here was beyond brilliant. Despite a LOT of heaters, it is not the warmest place though, obviously because of it's size. Wouldn't put me off - I'll just wear a warmer jumper next time! The atmosphere was great - I felt privileged to be there.
D. M.
Beautiful building. If you've never been you need to go
B. H.
I loved the cross are exhibition. Very cool! Very cold! Colder inside than outside!
E. B.
Went to a fabulous Ordination service of the new Bishop. The acoustics were amazing.
N. M.
Beautiful church and not too costly - worth a visit
K. M.
Beautiful building... Staff friendly and welcoming even if you just call in for a quick look.. Didn't have time for a full tour but its only £5 so may do it another tine. All the money goes on the upkeep. There's a nice wee shop with reasonably priced items too.
D. M.
Beautiful. We were lucky enough to see Rufus Wainwright in concert here.
L. H.
It's a beautiful Cathedral that has a very good audio guide included as part of your admission. It's more restrained in terms of decoration but is still very interesting to look at and has some very nice features.
G. H.
Beautiful cathedral right in the heart of Belfast. Whether you're religious or not you can't help but appreciate this fine building with all of its imposing charms. Worth a visit
P. Ó. C.
Extremely beautiful cathedral. A must see. But you may not want to go in if there are tourist coaches outside. There's gift shops inside with souvenirs. Guided tours. Help/information desk inside. And placards on the walls to explain what's what. Oh, I think there's a charge, but I can't remember how much!!!
m. m.
Wonderful cathedral steeped in history. Was here for winter market so didnt get the audio tour but there is information on the walls within explaining a lot of the history. Staff onhand were friendly and welcoming
T. H.
I'm sure this cathedral would normally be very awesome to go see, but when we went to see it today they were setting up for an event and tables, chairs, and A/V equipment was all over the place. Bonus for that was that we didn't need to buy tickets to go in as we would have to on a regular day.
M. B.
Much love to all those fighting the good fight, keep up the good work and our prayers and thoughts are with you. Freedom is closer than what you think don't lose heart 💖
R. J.
Beautiful
s. e. c. g.
It's a beautiful cathedral, but I don't think I'll ever agree with charging people for going into a church, since some of us go more to pray than to take pictures. Although, if you don't mind it, it's only £5 per adult
D. I.
What a treat r the eyes and heart. I felt I had stepped back in time and what history is in those stones.....What stories they can tell. This is full of precious artefacts, and the tour guides are so knowledgeable and helpful. It's well worth a visit. The Titanic themed coffin cover was particuarily poignant. Amazing memory of a living link with history. Come and visit stay 4 a service and feel the warmth of Belfast cathedral.
A.
Amazing historical building right in the middle of belfast. Called in to have a few moments of reflection and then have a quick look around. To my dismay we were asked to pay £5 each entrance fee!!!! I have been in many religious places in my time and I have never ever had to pay an admission fee. We would have expected to see a donation box as funds are needed for the upkeep of these beautiful historic buildings and we would gladly made one - but £10 for a 20min visit is just a bit much for me. Maybe some people can afford it but some can't.....
L. T.
Entered this peaceful place unaware it was Church of Ireland. No matter though. The choral singing and organ accompaniment was a spiritually uplifting experience I shall remember for a long time.
P. G.
Beautiful building with a small sovereign shop plenty of photo opportunities
C. C.
Lovely place to visit, feel it.
F. M.
Beautiful place! Lovely helpful staff and great shop
B. A. B.
Gorgeous, historical church. Well worth the entry fee. Beautiful art, some of which was stolen by the Nazis but returned by Americans as depicted in the book and movie "The Monument Men".
J. A.
Beautiful visit. Friendly staff.
A. N.
Beautiful murals, a maze to walk if the chairs are reordered slightly, some exquisite sights to see like the side chapel and the baptismal font. Go enjoy
P. L.
Belfast's Cathedral that is a wonderful building. It can be used as a church on Sundays or visited during the week by paying a small admission fee. There is lots to see including the baptism font and the stained glass.
J. A.
Average architecture, one of the less ornate cathedrals...it’s not worth to pay the admission only if you’re a religious person and I’m not one.
I seen the Hunchback of Norte Dame here (with Lon Chaney) now that was a great experience.
P. T.
Absolutely beautiful, and the ceremony
We where invited to was brilliant
It lasted for around 2half hours I really enjoyed this, this beautiful building is worth visiting the staff is very helpful, and I will be back.
C. N.
Lovely cathedral very expensive when there 6 of you was able to take pictures in the lobby area
C. P.
Absolutely loved it...found this great market inside
C. F.
Beautiful place. Great guide (who are volunteers)Some people bauk at the visitors fee but this is being spent on a building that needs repairs.
A. S. (.
I came here to play with my school orchestra. The building is very beautiful. It’s a protestant cathedral but not many people go there. It’s spacious and clean.
E. T.
Beautiful historic building and they are always opening their doors to local makers and performers for gigs/markets etc... Love it, love thd stained glass!
V. L.
Great cathedral, pay a little entry fee to visit inside. We arrive in the afternoon, didn’t have the chance to listen to their evening song.
d. m.
A piece of Belfast's history, well worth a visit. A small admission fee with guided or self guided tours available and religious services on throughout the week.
D. C.
Attended a beautiful service
G. L.
Nicely built. Don't need to take the £5 tour. Beautifully decorated and preserved.

(Translated) St. Anne's Cathedral, also known as Belfast Cathedral, is a religious temple of the Church of Ireland located on Donegall St., Belfast, Antrim, in Northern Ireland. It is a unique cathedral in serving two separate dioceses: Connor and Down and Dromore (Anglican and Catholic respectively) despite not being the seat of either of the two, although it is located within the first diocese.
At first it was not considered "cathedral" in the exact sense of the word, but it was the church-seat of the bishop, however it appears titled as such.
In April 2007, a 40-meter stainless steel spiral was installed on top of the cathedral. Called "the Spiral of Hope," the structure is lit up at night and is part of the district's development program.
