Reviews of Ewenny Priory

Unfortunately when we arrived there was filming going on so we weren't allowed into it, tried to find out what they were filming but security said they didn't even know, but you can see bits of it and the gate house. The church is worth a visit as well, don't forget to go though the middle door at the back of the church as well.

It's free to enter. There's not much to look around so I wouldn't travel here just to see the priory unless I lived nearby, but if you're heading to an attraction in the surrounding area like Ogmore Beach or Dunraven Bay (Southerndown) it's worth a visit on the way or on the way back.
Although, backtracking a little on my comments, the priory is set in beautiful surroundings, so it would probably be a nice place to come and relax in the sunshine or under the shade of a tree and while away the day to the sound of pheasants and peacocks that can both be seen here (although on my first visit the peacocks decided to torment me, calling out from every direction but never revealing themselves 😂).

Fascinating! First time visit - there's so much of the original priory available to see if you go into the church.

Free to visit. We were the only visitors so we were free to explore all the Abbey and artefacts with kids without disturbing anyone else. There is not a large amount to see but this was a good choice for a drizzly morning. Nice walking route is possible too.

Ewenny priory garden where open today
The garden and house is faded grandeur I can only think how beautiful it must have be back in the day
The garden is only open two years a year but definitely worth the visit

So tranquil a setting near farm and house. Obviously a very busy place in the Vale. Now a delight to see and touch the stones. Peacock surprised us as did pheasant in grounds.

This is a nice site to visit. Unfortunately, moody of the priory is not open to the public for touring. The church, however is worth a quick visit.

Stunning historic building, interesting historically and architecturally. Definitely worth a visit even if you can only catch a glimpse of the mansion house, which isn't open to the public.

It's billed as a historic Church, I turned up without searching anything about it and basically I'm not sure what I was supposed to see. Parking is a lay-by, the church is open so we wandered inside, there's a back area that has all the old pieces, floor tiles and inscribed stone. That's it, very little information, if you go here do a little research online to have some idea about what you're looking at. There is some other old buildings about but I wasn't sure if it was part of it, some parts marked as private. It's very, very peaceful here and it's amazing to thing that 900 years ago monks lived in these very rooms but I felt just as lost when I left as when I arrived.

Wonderful Norman church, part of a rare fortified priory. Fascinating history and beauty at the same time. Well worth the visit.

Surrounded by defensive walls.

Stunning setting for a wedding reception we performed at inside a Teepee in the summer, we would highly recommend this beautiful location for any couples or planners looking.

Lovely walk and got to see some lovely wildlife

Beautiful graveyard. Magnificent ancient Yuw trees, a site to behold. Great to see saplings Yuws also being cultivated. Sadly the church was locked to could not view the tombs of the original Norman 'Lords of the Manor' much to the disappointment of my little one. Another time perhaps... open churches are sadly a target in this day and age so perhaps that was the reasoning and not the now seemingly fallback excise of Covid restrictions.

It’s atmospheric if your lucky might see the peacocks

Interesting place to walk around but limited access to the priory itself. Worth a quick visit for a few minutes nose round.

PParading12th century Priory with great local walks by the river. Parking is free and plentiful, not sure how busy it gets in beak summer though. Be mindful that much of the area is still private and lived in so make sure you check any signs on gates before you walk through.

Beautiful building stretching back to Norman times. A place of peace and tranquillity.

Historic priory. Excellent condition, open every day during daylight hours to visitors with information available. The priory has a very friendly and active congregation. Toilets available during services. It had disabled access.

First time I have ever been here.. Which sadly was too put a great man to rest.
This place does have a certain atmosphere which is through its history.

I love coming here as all my family is there. I love going into the church and read from the bible. Also just like sitting there to. Been coming here since I was a small child.

Unique priory church set in rolling Welsh countryside, the famous interior was painted by Turner, a display of artefacts from the monastery exhibited begging the high altar.

Utterly beautiful, fascinating, and tranquil. Could easily spend all day here. Well interpreted and presented historical features of great importance.

Ewenny - a stop on the St Thomas Way - is a rural village in the Vale of Glamorgan, and a true Marcher location: a place of borders and crossing-places, where historic paths and old ways wind across the landscape.
Ewenny was shaped by its Benedictine Priory in the Middle Ages, founded in the early twelfth century (probably) by William de Londres, who also built the first motte and bailey castle at neighbouring Ogmore.
Much of the medieval Priory is still visible today, at Ewenny Priory Church, renowned as the most complete Norman church in south Wales.
Highlights include the Romanesque arches supported by round pillars with scalloped capitals (in the church nave), fourteenth-century geometric patterned tiles in the crossing, and impressive stonework in the south transept, such as tombs of founders and priors, a twelfth-century carving of the Entry of Christ into Jerusalem, and ancient Celtic Christian stones, pre-dating the Priory. The presbytery (chancel) has stunning twelfth-century barrel- and crossed-rib-vaulting.
