Reviews of St Mary Redcliffe Church

Beautiful church with very friendly ladies welcoming you & giving you helpful information. Well kept & clean & lovely to walk around in a calm atmosphere. You can see that a great effort is taken to keep the church in good shape. There is also a good shop there run by very helpful ladies. 👍🙏🌷😊💥
B.
Must and should visit this place for the architect and history they have......Entry is free, photography is allowed and people can pray calmly
S. C.
An astonishingly beautiful parish church, really a cathedral status ecclesiastical building.
I was fortunate to be here for my son’s graduation from the Old Vic Theatre School, and I really cannot think of a nobler environment to culminate those young graduates time in Bristol
D. P.
I'm not a religious person but I love this church, and the events it puts on. I've listened to Avant garde organ recitals here, visited the bell tower, witnessed a screening of Fritz Lang's Metropolis with live improvised organ accompaniment, and as a maze/labyrinth nerd I like that the one on one of the ceiling roses has been made into a water feature in nearby Victoria Park. This place knows how to reach out and make the building meaningful to a secular society and to my mind that is really important.
N. W.
An impressive building outside and inside. Worth visiting if you can!
C. T.
Amazingly beautiful inside.... well worth a visit.

We did a guided tour of St Mary Redcliffe Church, which was informative and very interesting.
We even got to go up to the Chatterton Room that was used by the young poet Thomas Chatterton. This was accessed by going up (and back down) a steep spiral staircase, so not suitable for all but well worth a visit.
We also learnt about other notable figures that have memorials in the church.
The guides were knowledgeable and provided us with good facts without being boring!
N. M.
Quite possibly the most stunning non-cathedral I've visited. It's quite narrow and very tall, so it pulls off being inimate and magnificent at the same time...which is a rare feat. The modern stained glass in the Lady Chapel is beautiful and the gold-leafed vaulting is a wonderful touch. The guides were knowledgable and friendly and deserve a special mention.

A gem of a building in Bristol's category of amazing buildings and located in the heart of the city with a fascinating interior, exterior and history. Despite the church being closed at the moment, I found plenty to look at in the churchyard such as snowdrops, crocus and early blooming daffodils.
M. G.
Well kept Church with great detail and design.
A. T.
Visited today to see Treefest. 100 variously decorated trees. Finishes Dec 7 2019, so get along as well worth the trip. Some very 'clever' designs. And you have the church to look at as well.
A. E.
Beautiful Church and very well maintained. Arguably better that Bristol Cathedral. The interior is spectacular with so much natural light illuminating the space. The history of how the Church was saved during to war is very interesting.
J. W.
I enjoyed ringing the bells here on April 23rd! The 11th bell that I rung was so good to ring. I recommend ringing here if you are a church bell ringer.
J. H.
Amazing place! The building was huge inside and so beautiful. All the detail in the construction is something worth going to see. A lot of history in this building as well. Very well kept and friendly people. I will definitely visit again next time I'm in the area.
N. H. A.
It was famously described by Queen Elizabeth I as: the fairest, goodliest, and most famous parish church in England.
G. D.
Very interesting church with just the right amount of information. Good for both art and history. Loved the part tramline still stuck vertically in the grounds from the last war.
M. D.
Very warm and welcoming people, mass service really solemn.. people should attend the church service as often and as regularly as possible. I am a Roman Catholic, but it does not matter. We all believe in Jesus Christ.
l. b.
A stunning gothic church in the heart of Bristol. Some interesting history and knowledgable staff. North porch and St John's chapel windows are favourites.
P. C.
Surprised by the stained glasses, the tumbs, ecc deserve a visit

E. R.
Very colorful windows, very well decorated. High ceiling which gives a feeling of majesty.
Free entrance so it is definitely worth a visit.
To be honest, I liked this church more than Bristol Cathedral.
J. C.
What a wonderful cathedral. One of the best l've seen. Would have loved to have heard the organ recital.
L. H.
A must see.... the pipe organ is simply amazing, and the H20 in pipe exhibit is a profound perspective into the realm of science unable to prove or predict an outcome! A deep spiritual experience! 1 of my favorite stops in all of England 🇬🇧✈🌍👍
M. L.
Been living in Bristol for almost seven years but never got a chance to visit this historical church. A good place to visit with family in a peaceful day.
N. F.
So much history in this church. Civil wars, the populating of America, so many history makers have passed through these doors. Don't particularly recommend the cafe downstairs, and it is cash only!
Q. V.
We were welcomed by a lovely lady who gave us a guide to go in and around the church. As usual, it's one of Britain's many impressive churches. It's small yet packed with history.
M. D.
Beautiful and peaceful atmosphere. The many presentations and historical memorabilia on display is a real treat. Absolutely worth a visit.

Beautiful gothic church which looks more like a cathedral

Gorgeous gothic church in Redcliffe area, it places nice contrast with modern buildings in the area. Nice place to go visit however it is a bit further from center or triangle but it's nearby to Queen's square and waterside which has lot to offer as well.

Unexpected extensive historical importance, explained by a free tour run by the staff. Absolutely had to make a donation.

The Church of St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol is a large, perpendicular Gothic structure built from the 12th to the 15th century. It is one of the largest parish churches in Britain.
The first church on the site was Saxon. Like the Dome of Home in New Brighton near Liverpool, the red cliffs of the River Avon were a welcome sight to the medieval sailors. They would pray at St Mary's before and after voyages.
Many wealthy medieval merchants helped fund the church's construction and their memorials and tombs can be found within, particularly William Canynges.
On 1446, the spire was struck by lighting and fell, not to be replaced until 1872. Almost all the medieval stained glass was destroyed in the Reformation and was replaced in the Victorian era. There is some more modern glass in the lady chapel.
The organ is by Harrison and Harrison, dating from 1911. The instrument has 4300 pipes. Many of the larger pipes were reused from earlier organs and can be seen easily around the chancel.
The church escaped damage during the Bristol Blitz. A bomb, exploding nearby, threw a length of tram rail over several houses before embedding it into the church yard. It has been left as a memorial.
In the South transept is the Chaotic Pendulum. A play on the usual predictability of a pendulum, the Chaotic Pendulum is a unique design. Water flows continuously into the middle of the crossbeam causing unpredictable oscillations and a mesmerising effect. Whilst intended to highlight the beauty of the world, it is also very relaxing to watch.
P. C.
Fine architecture, fascinating history, beautiful stained glass windows.
J. V.
Best church in Bristol. Magnificent with a friendly congregation. Excellent cafe downstairs. Impressive medieval architecture......don't miss it !
P. L.
Great architecture and a good venue for a quiet 10 minute reflection.
K. B.
The detail in this buildings design is hard to miss. It’s like a miniaturised cathedral
A. R. L.
Always nice to visit this church. Today some unusual views for you. Rainbow over the city centre. Taken from the spire.
M. M.

G. W.
Big church. We thought it was the cathedral at first. Lovely cafe In there.
M. J.
Really nice church
E. -. A. D.
Wonderful architecture design with some gothic details.
P. H.
Queen Elizabeth I once described this church as "the fairest, goodliest, and most famous parish church in England." It has connections with Handel, Chatterton. Parts of it date from the 12th century.
A. V.
When Queen Elizabeth I visited Bristol in 1574, she described St. Mary Redcliffe as "the fairest parish church in England." Built in the 13th century and extensively renovated in the 15th century in the Baroque style, the church is located on the south side of Floating Harbour and takes its name from the red cliffs on which it stands.
With its slender, clustered pillars and reticulated vaulting, hexagonal porch, and richly decorated doorway, it perfectly displays the wealth of Bristol's rich merchants. A great triptych, Sealing The Tomb, designed and executed for the main altar by William Hogarth, is now at the offices of the Bristol & Region Archaeological Services in the former St. Nicholas Church.
H. S.
I love this church ⛪ nice and good service ...
Good Chorus and Mass
N. L. M.
Lovely gothic church, interesting artifacts and history, but mostly amazing architecture.
G. H.
Beautiful church. With a beautiful community.
L. B.
High church Anglican place of worship. Could be more welcoming to visitors with printed Orders of Service.
J. T.
Beautiful Church and wonderful grounds
C. T.
Nice church, information sheet available in English,French, Spanish, German and Japanese. Very useful.
There is a small gift shop.
T. M.
Beautiful gothic church, with a fabulous cafe in a crypt.
G. E.
A lovely, tranquil space in a busy city..the church itself is magnificent.. well worth a visit..
M. S.
Big ups to the organist, raised the roof the other day, wagwan.
A. N.
Lovely city centre church which is massive! There was the Christmas tree festival on at the time which meant it was perhaps a bit busier than other times. Worth trying to visit for one of the concerts, as there is a great acoustic in the church. There's quite a few steps around which can be a bit uneven so mind your feet as you go as I saw one or two people slightly tripping.
J. B.
Solid and impressive building with flying buttresses, large feature windows and a very tall spire. Church of England. The grounds are nothing special but the building certainly is.
B. N.
Unexpectedly found this church in bristol near redcliffe. We never thought that its so huge when we got inside. Amazing architecture and lovely people inside taking care of it. It was a 10/10 experience for us. We visited this on our last morning in Bristol and unfortunately 15 minutes before a service was due to start - but the staff gently reminded us and allowed us entrance. It is a stunning piece of architecture. I damaged during the blitz this beautiful church bears testimony to centuries of Christian worship. Incredible architecture. Helpful volunteers.
C. S.
"the fairest, goodliest, and most famous parish church in England." Still true after all these years
G. B.
One word. Amazing! Worth a visit!
m. T.
Amazing church..my first time in there ..
P. G.
Awe - inspiring architecture which caused Queen Elizabeth 1 to describe the church as "the fairest church in all my kingdom". What can a mere commoner say? Beautiful building which appears to be very well kept and maintained despite huge costs involved - a credit to the current PCC as "Wardens for the time-being". The whole building oozes quality - the fabric, the music , the organ, the flowers, the bells with their fittings, the environment, the staff who meet and greet, everything and everybody make one feel so welcome in this place that i find myself lost for words! A truly fabulous House of God available to mankind.
A. M.
Very well maintained, friendly parishioners and an angelic choir. Stunningly full of Gothic details, absolutely stupendous Church.
Worth a visit if you're travelling from Sydney like me or from anywhere and you happen to visit Bristol ❤

The gardens are a great place to find some quiet space during a lunchtime break from working in nearby offices. Walk round to the back of the church and you can sit on the wooden benches among lawns and flowers to help you regain some natural balance in your busy day.
N. D. R.

b. t.
Looking good at the Treefest and nice to see so much happening.
B.
Beautiful building but couldn't help but notice it was all a bit religious. Shame really, I think if they got rid of that aspect and got a small deli and coffee shop, maybe a soft play for the kids; then it would attract more visitors.
1. o.
A real joy to visit. Its such a grand example of craftsmanship. Beautiful details hidden in unexpected places. I love it. A must see place if you are visiting Bristol.
A. W.

St. Mary Redcliffe is an Anglican parish church located in the Redcliffe district of Bristol,
The church is known for the beauty of its Gothic architecture and is classed as a Grade I listed building by Historic England. It is more like a great cathedral than a Parish Church. The impressive Spire is 292 feet tall.
Besides the impressive Gothic Styling, the stained glass is lovely as are the ceilings.
The nave of St Mary Redcliffe is exceptional with its perfectly proportioned arches. There is a café in the undercroft.
If you like architecture and Art or just want a quiet reflective place then this is for you.
J. C.

J. S.
The best church architecturally in Bristol
R. B.
The finest parish church in England as the first queen Elizabeth described it...and it really is...it's wonderful gothic perpendicular is really quite something..it was built in a time before cranes and modern building techniques...it was hand built on site..by fellows with incredible skills..and a head for heights
It's a lively spiritual tranquil place..
There is a cafe in the crypt and a peice of a railway track stuck into the green at the back...which was blown half a mile from when the Luftwaffe bombed temple meads railway station during the war.
G. H.
Always visit st Mary's redcliff church when visiting Bristol it's only a short walk from temple meads railway station. The cafe in the crypt serves good food during week days only.
S. C.
This church is so relaxing, there was an organ recital when I was there. Everyone I met was so friendly. The cafe in the undercroft is well worth a visit too.
R. C.
I like to take a look at the old architecture but like most large churches in Britain you run the risk of being pounced on by people asking for donations. I understand why they need the money, but sometimes you want to have a bit of peace and just have a quick nosey around and you end up leaving feeling harrassed (Bath & Truro are the worst culprits, they have people standing right in the doorway). Take my advice if you just want a quick peek, follow some tourists in and when they are jumped on wander in.
After you have enjoyed the beauty of the place, and the peace and quiet, drop some money in the donations box on the way out.
S. B.

Free day out and very friendly staff. Beautiful place with lots of old Bristol history.
They have a little water exhibit on unpredictability. They removed the stain-glass windows dedicated Edward Colston and had a plaque about his contributions to slavery.

(Translated) A beautiful, majestic ancient church. If you like old churches, this is a great place to visit. Inside an unreal size organ. And when you start exploring the exterior façade - the smallest details of the façade and interior made of stone impress ... It seems - how much work does it take to do this ...?! But, I think many ancient churches have it and jib- not the only one like that ...!
(Original)

(Translated) If the people of the church in Spain were like here I have no doubt that we would go to church more. Here is not only religion, it is community is implication .... It is amazing the hospitality of the people who run this chapel. I had the great good fortune to witness a brutal organ concert. I love it, it's beautiful inside, and it's very well maintained. It is a pleasure. I recommend it, it's a mandatory stop in Bristol.

Si la gente de la iglesia en España fueran como aquí no me cabe duda de que iríamos más a la iglesia. Aquí no solo es religión, es comunidad es implicación....
