The church was open, possibly because people were tidying up the grounds. Looks like a nice little church, plenty of recent work to maintain and improve. I would love to hear the bells.

I have had the good fortune to have visited this fine church on many occasions over the past 40 years. The church overlooks the reservoir and fields surrounding the site often contain flocks of sheep. The tower dates from the 14th century and some Roman brick has been used in the construction of the walls of the tower and the chancel.

Beautiful setting for this place of worship overlooking Abberton reservoir. Lovely porch extension in keeping with the rest of the church. Definitely one on my list for this summer's photographic tour of local churches. Sublime🙂

Church dates from the early C12th and the tower held 5 bells in a medieval oak bell frame. The church was damaged in the Essex earthquake of 1884 and the bells silenced. The frame was preserved and a new ringing chamber installed to house the 5 refurbished bells and a new one cast in memory of a past master of the Essex Assoc of Change Ringers.
The church is not open for casual visitors.
