Reviews of St Peters Chapel

From the car park depending on abilities a ten to fifteen minute walk
Wheelchair unless for off road or rough ground would not be suitable as track to church is rough loose pebbles at some points with uneven and some pot holes
When you get to the church and surrounding area it’s a beautiful spot in the right weather
Church sits alone with views over farmland and the sea
Keen birdwatchers have the salt marshes and also shoreline to explore
The church is in good condition and basic inside with a few benches for you to sit on. It’s well kept and a little honesty box in their so make a donation big or small as it all helps
You enjoy as I did
I’ve been once and would go back

Hidden gem!
St Cedd landed here from Lindisfarne in 654AD to bring Christianity to the heathen Saxons in the south. A year later he used the stone from an abandoned Roman Costal Fort, Orthona, to build a monastery. This is all that remains of the church built on the gatehouse. The red tiles are Roman building material. You can see the bricked-up door in the side where it was used as a barn before being reinstated as a church.

The Chapel of St Peter Ad Murum was built on the walls of the Roman fort "Othona" by St Cedd in the middle of 17th century. He used it as a base to convert the people of Essex to Christianity.
Unfortunately only Chapel survived.
It is not so big, but there are some benches inside to sit on.
The land around is cultivated, so dogs has to be kept on lids all the time, no horses or motor vehicles allowed there.
Be aware of adders there too!
The car park is short, about 5-7 minutes walk to the Chapel.

Sat by itself as if almost on guard , this rectangular Chapel oozes history. Don't expect much inside, it's a simple building but ideal to clear your mind and gather your thoughts.
On the way from the car park there is also 2 pill boxes nearby to keep an eye out for along with ditches of a roman site.

Short walk. Could be boring but next to the sea and quiet. Lovely unaltered, much, church built 664 ish.

this truly is a peaceful place i can pray to the heavenly father and his son jesus christ. the setting is remarkable and you can feel the age of the chapel when you walk in to it. you can also get some exercise as you walk a bit to it as you see the greenery of the location which is a way better feeling than going to a church in places such as southminster or burnham. would definatly recommend going!

STUNNING and peaceful Chapel in a beautiful and isolated location. The door was open during the day for visitors (during lockdown Nov 2020) and hand sanitising facilities just inside. The amount of history associated with this site was a real surprise. A few information boards inside the chapel do a good job of covering the basics and help tell the story.
On a windy day we stood inside the ancient stone Chapel with whistling coming from the roof and gentle candle light from alcoves by the alter. Very well worth the short walk from the carpark.

Fascinating chapel to visit. So much history on this site. About a five minute walk from the sizeable car park nearby (which is free). Chapel was open the Sunday afternoon we visited.

Lovely place! Nice walk to.

Park in the designated area (free) and follow the well defined path. You follow a stony but mostly flat path directly to the chapple. Tourist information available in car park, well worth a walk why not take a picnic and sit down by the Chapel.
Lots of space for the kids to play and run around, also a popular geocache location if that's on your radar.
Not too much walking and dog friendly.

Been here a few times with the family. Even beautiful in cold weather. Great for dog walks. Highly recommend going.

Lovely old chapel surrounded by this beautiful landscape. Well worth a visit 👍

There is a car park with a half mile walk to get to the chapel. There are information panels and booklets within the chapel telling the history of this lovely place. There is little remaining of the Roman fort but the road leading to the chapel has the characteristics of the straight Roman road. I will come again to explore the beach and the fort foundation.

Amazing chapel on the coast, very beautiful location, right next to the sea, very atmospheric, good for sunrise sunset photos and long coastal walks, easy for all the family, good parking, beautiful peaceful place. Also near Bradwell abandoned airfield.

Interesting building with history dating back to Roman times. The current chapel sits on the sea wall at the end of the st Peter's way long distance footpath. Check out challenge running for an ultra marathon based along the route

The Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall was originally built by Bishop Cedd in or around 654 (7th Century). It was an Anglo-Celtic church for the East Saxons, set astride the ruins of the abandoned Roman fort of Othona. The current structure was most likely built around 654–662, incorporating the Roman bricks and stones.

Love this place for walks

Small working Chapel. Great place to visit and reflect.

What a bit of history. Brilliant

The oldest church in England, founded by St. Cedd, built on the wall of a Roman Fort now lost to the Blackwater estuary. You can do a circular walk past the defunct Bradwell power station and view Saxon fishing posts still standing in the mud. Across the estuary, you can see West Mersea Island and Tolesbury. 6 mile walk, fee parking.

A truly wonderful church set in such an atmospheric location, remote and immensely peaceful. The sense of tranquillity is almost unparalleled.

People have been visiting this place for nearly 1,400 years. The earliest visitors would have spoke some of the earliest versions of the English language and would have thought about the world completely differently to us. That thought alone makes this an amazingly special place to visit, for me.

Great place for a walk, so quiet and peaceful!

A lovely, atmospheric chapel.

Amazing structure that was built in 674ad. Made from the remains of a Roman Fort. Stunning. Lots of 20th century abandoned structures too. Great local pubs. Camping is an option nearby also. The one of Essex' hidden gems.

St Peter-on-the-Wall is the name of this Saxon chapel which claims to be oldest church in England built by St Cedd in 654 AD (though other estimates suggest dates of 660-662 AD) and is Grade 1 listed.
Cedd built his chapel over the ruined gate of the abandoned Roman fort of Othona, and reusing stones and bricks to help build his chapel -hence the 'on the wall'. It is still in regular use and open to visitors daily.
The Chapel is situated at one end of the long distance walk ‘St Peters Way’ right on the coast and has stunning views a must for walkers and those keen on photography.
Cedd travelled south from Lindisfarne to spread Christianity at the behest of Sigeberht the Good, then King of the East Saxons, in 653 and returned the next year having been ordained as a bishop in order to build the Chapel, and probably others too. Following the death of Cedd in October 664 from plague, the Chapel became part of the Diocese of London.

Amazing little church on the coast. Well worth a visit if you are interested in history. Walking from the car park down to the church on the old Roman road is a nice experience.

One of the most peaceful places I know.

A wonderful, evocative and very ancient place of worship. Once part of a Roman fort it is now totally isolated but remains in use - and even open in the aftermath of Covid-19, which plenty of other places of worship struggled to do. Surrounded by open countryside and salt marshes and the sea.
G. m.
Great old church lots of historic

Old Saxon Chapel. Worth the walk to visit.

This is a wonderful, atmospheric, magical place.....for now. Let's hope Bradwell 2 doesn't happen. Its a monster that will affect more than just the Dengie!

Set in the Wild East, where land meets sea, this gem was constructed out of the remains of a derelict Roman fort in 645AD, by Cedd from Lindisfarne, just 49 years after Pope Gregory's missionary St Augustine arrived at Thanet in Kent, and welcomed by king Æthelbert of Kent, who St Augustine later converted to Christianity.

(Translated) This is where we start our travels for 2021.
Incredibly beautiful place, everyone should visit it for a nice long and inspiring walk along the coast of the North Sea and the mouth of the river Cherna Voda, nearby is the small chapel steeped in centuries of history, and next to it you can hear besides the sound of the waves and the sound of the green wheat fields.
