Reviews of West Kirk

A real hidden treasure of a graveyard, not only for the stones found there but also for Outlander fans who may recognise it as 'the Black Kirk' from season one. There are a number of grave markers carved with the trades many people had in life as well as symbols of mortality such as the skull and the hour glass. The ruin of the kirk building also contains stones etched with swords and crosses of an earlier period to the 17th and 18th century markers. Secluded location, the walk is a pleasent one from the village of Culross.

Cycled round Culross and came across this lovely little bit of history.

A very nice place to discover which is a half hour walk from Culross. DO NOT TRY TO GET BY CAR. Almost sure you wouldn’t get back! This is from experience!
It was a benedictine abbey, built in the 1500s as the official place of worship until 1633 when it moved to the nearby Parish Church. However, it was used for burials up until the 19th century, and you can see many of them, lots from the war. I believe it was a spot for TV show Outlander, but don’t know where

Lovely serene old kirk with some very old gravestones and markings. Some of the building is looking like it needs some TLC and there is a small mausoleum like area with a grave that is completely overgrown also - this adds to the atmosphere though! It's got a single track road for about 150 yards which you can't get two cars past each other. There is a small area near some fields at the top that could park four cars easily, five or six at a well parked push with a 30 yard walk to the site. If you like old kirks and are passing by, it is well worth a visit.

Great visit. Of the beaten path but worth a visit.

Nice secluded ruin of a church. Not much left but the shell of the main building and the grave stones. There is a mausoleum on the side hidden in the trees as well. The graves are very old as they appear half buried but they are interesting.

I had heard of the site from some of the Culross walking paths and decided to take a look . Set in well maintained grounds with many ancient tombstones ,I would call it a romantic ruin which served the area as the Parish Church until 1633 when it had fallen into disrepair and the congregation was moved to the present Parish Church in Culross. The present ruin was built around 1500 ad and is a category A monument . Beside the grounds is the Dalgleish Mausoleum itself a category B building now overgrown and roofless .It has achieved fame from being a location in the 'Outlander 'Tv series as the Black Kirk .Not to difficult to find if you come down Gallows Loan from the A985 take the first on the right and as the road bends to the left a small track carries straight on ,about 200 yards on there is a small turning area to park and the church is signposted a short walk away

Follow the blue, back path to the Kirk. The path is well maintained and easy to follow. It's a 20 minute walk from Culross. ENJOY.
