Reviews of St Luke’s Bombed Out Church

Fantastic venue and a really powerful reminder of the impact of the war on this city. They have a wide number of events here, and there are some really cool sculptures (see photo of the soldiers shaking hands). Definitely worth a visit if you’re travelling to Liverpool.
J. N.
Fabulous.
Well presented and edited.
Staff attentive and helpful.
Well done to everyone involved.
Fantastic to see our city come together again!
T. K.
Nice seating area outside, plenty of parasols for sunny weather and it had such a chilled vibe.
The toilets were the worst sadly, being a port a toilet where no water to wash hands, and the toilet didn't work.
F. S.
We absolutely love working with the team at the Bombed Out Church because they are accommodating, ambitious and really care about the history and heritage of the site. Their incredible vision and exciting future plans for the church wouldn't be possible without their fastidious approach to community engagement and involving local stakeholders. Long may their work continue!
M. L.
Had a nice little stroll around here with my granddaughter who's 10 and very interested in the 2nd world war
There was lots to see but unfortunately we couldn't go inside due to there being a theatre show in there in the evening
A. H.
Lovely time at hand crafted market today. Plenty of stores and loads to see. Lovely traders and things for all ages.
S. J.
Great beer, enormous beer garden with a bombed out church, god didnt help the people against the germans then !!!! Not much fun if its raining i assume.
N. G.
Fantastic place.
E. J.
Lovely market that's open once a month. Would highly recommend!
J. J.
Attended artisan market this weekend. Well organised, staff helpful and friendly. Good variety of stalls, places to eat & drink. Plus access to toilets.
D. H.
Good use of an old building, could do with better toilets, wheelchair access is not immediately visible, pop up bar serving alcohol and hot drinks, plenty of outside seating
S. M. A.
I like going to the bombed out church maker's market held here on select Sundays.
I can see lots of histories in this building. It never fails to attract my attention every time I pass by.
P. B.
After so long I've finally made it inside... It's like an oasis of calm in the city centre. The rooms off to the side are a sombre reminder of the damage done during the war but it of that has come this perfect sun trap. (And they sell wine and beer too...)
A. D.
Lovely place to sit outside in the sun and have a few drinks. Pizza was heavenly and all staff were super friendly and helpful. Will be going again!
K. M.
A wonderful structure that was a victim of war. Celebrate its beauty and the reason for its present existence.
E. G.
Such a wonderful piece of history and architecture. This church is unique, beautiful, the grounds are well kept and lovely memorials.
There are often events held here from cinema nights, shows, food &drink, music and now weddings what a beautiful way to spend your big day.
Not only that it sits at one of the busiest streets in Liverpool 'Bold Street' you'll find plenty of independent restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Including vintage clothes shops, saloons, crystal shops- theres an incredible mix of both old and new!
A. C.
Now that's a good place for a sunny day in the church garden having a drink, whatever you fancy, men or women and kids
s. s.
Lovely place fantastic history and nostalgia.open day this weekend. Do go.

Felix Ngindu was performing with movema for Black Month History@the Bombed Church Liverpool
P. V.
I have been around this church many times but been inside today to see Chinese New year illumination and it was awesome... Enjoyed the 10 minutes show thoroughly... It is believed that this church been bombarded during world war II
T. H.
Lovely place to visit The gardens should be open all the time again as they were once not just for certain events like Chinese New Year
S. F.
Enjoyed watching a hilarious show in a fabulous setting. As open air, dependant on weather.
L. R.
Very well put together and thought provoking exhibition about WWII and other war atrocities. Definitely worth a look.
S. D.
One of the best outdoors space in Liverpool, staff are so nice and service is quick, can't recommend enough
G. C.
Interesting piece of history. Well worth a visit. Entry fee is just a £1 donation.
D.
Beautifully maintained old church. There really isn't much to see beyond these photos, however its definitely worth having a look at if you're in the area.
m.
Interesting place to visit, informative about the history of the church and nice to see the original pieces that were bombed!!!
J. U.
A beautiful place to visit & reflect on days gone by
D. R.
Poignant reminder of the horrors of the war. Sort of nice that it's not been too tarted up inside with any exhibitions and display cases and the like. Keeps it very real.
S. G.
Intersting, lots of new digital pics of how it looked before the war. Lovely venue as long as it's not raining!
S. H.
Lovely place to stop for a drink in the sunshine. Really friendly staff.
S. R.
Been wanting to visit for months. Enjoyed my visit quite fascinating
w.
I have a connection to WW2 because my parents lived through it and told me about their experiences, but it was great to come to this church and see displayed wood blackened during the fire, a real tangible link to the war. Lots of interesting things to see. You can also get drinks here - it looks like they have a small bar area. £1 to get in and look around. Definitely worth it.
K. W.
The fact that it has been preserved. I would have loved to have gone inside but I think there was some work being carried out. I will definitely go back again.
R. G.
Really beautiful part of Liverpool. Not much to do inside but outside there’s a fab little bar in the gardens
P. R.
A great idea to utilise the gardens but the only issue is the toilets and when the weather gets warmer !!!!!!
N. R.
It's boss and I love the fact that they have made it functional now achieving it's own self sufficiency but some of the people associated with running it are jumped up self-opinionated idiots that are not even from the city
C. P.
Had a walk round this lovely church earlier Had a look at the stalls what where there
P. R.
School performance of music art and dance , lovely setting.
Bit drafty though , need to fix them windows !
C. /. G.
If you are a history fan, this place is a must see. There's not much to do around the church other than walk around the grounds take photos, and soak in the history... it definitely pulled at my heart strings. An iconic landmark in Liverpool once a place of worship and community gatherings is now an empty, roofless shell from tthe 1941 bombings. A well maintained memorial for those who died in the war.
W. E.
Never seen anything like it, interesting to see it's used to host music events. Locked up for most of the day but an interesting site nonetheless.
S. C.
Magnificently restored. One of the City's best places to visit.
P. F.
Pretty place especially in sunset. Worthy for a quid entrance fee.
P. S.
A peaceful and relaxing place in a busy vibrant city. A reminder of the Merseyside blitz of May 1941 that brought so much devastation to the city of Liverpool, Wallasey and Birkenhead during WW2. The “All together now” statue commemorating the 1914 Christmas truce is within the grounds. There are no facilities on the site but plenty round about. The church is a shortish walk up Bold street from Liverpool city centre.
G. Y.
It's only taken about seventy years, but delighted to see that the Church is about to undergo extensive renovation. Totally closed at present, but I'm sure a couple more years will prove to be worth waiting for.
M. V.
I love this church, despite its emptiness and stark contrast to its surroundings it has its place in Liverpool and it ha s captured the hearts of my children too. We go inside and remind ourselves of how lucky we are every now and then. Well worth a look inside.
D. H.
Absolutely beautiful. Small donation to help towards restoration 💚👌a special place
E. A.
Nice little walk up the the church was bigger then expected feel like more information is NEED or at least volunteer around to tell you bit worth wick visit

A. L.
Honestly never been in, but is a good place to get a lift at night after having a drink in the nearby pubs and clubs
C. T.
Here in support of our Ukrainian friends for a peaceful protest. This is the obvious choice of location for such an event. Peace not War...
C. B. S.
If you're passing unnoticed, the chance is big to miss this beautiful place. £1 pound donation to access the interior of what was once a church. Good amount of information hanging on the walls help to get a feeling of the impact of the war on the city of Liverpool. Recomend!
V. T.
A very impactful piece of architecture, which is soaked in history. A place to relax and reflect on the past.
A. B.
Now reopened, visiting fee - donation- £2
D. R.
A very interesting place. I was there for the beer festival and the atmosphere in the church and gardens definitely made the beer enjoyable.
R. R.
🌟 Church ruins with interesting history. Peaceful place, you can have a drink and enjoy the sun, read a book. Friendly staff. 📌🐶 dogs are allowed inside📌Small entrance fee 1-2£ going to the fund for restoration
📌destroyed in 1941 during the Liverpool Blitz
📌also known as “bombed-out church”
📌outdoor theatre in 2020
S. A. K.
Beautiful architecture, with a lovely interior. I dont know much about this church, but i can tell it has a nice history.
I recommend visiting as its just so beautiful to look at, and its right next to bold street
T. D.
Beautiful thought provoking place. Includes memorial to Irish famine migrants who came to Liverpool in the 19 th century and a sculpture showing the Christmas Day football truce between Germans and English during WW1.
G. A.
Nice to see they have kept this reminder of the 2nd world war just the way it was at the end of the war.
J. W.
Good place to visit whilst in Liverpool to see what remains of St Luke's church which was bombed in the war.
H. P.
One of the most gorgeous places in Liverpool
J. C.
Wonderful memorial to visit, worth seeing!

P. J.
Lovely when the weather is nice. Pizzas looked nice but that was the only food on offer.
P. B.
Thanks to New Lunar Year celebrations we were able to go inside. Magnificent
D. C.
Didn't get a chance to go inside this church or the grounds as everything was locked, I couldn't find the opening times anywhere.
J. P.
Not well known and popular, but a must see in Liverpool!! The bombed out church has a big history and it’s breathtaking. Well done to the people working to keep it open and accessible to the public!
D. C.
Interesting to see, although Liverpool council need to be sweeping up all the rubbish and broken glass in the grounds and near front steps ! Love the addition of the World war one Christmas day football match statue and poppies planted beneath it, very apt, hope it stays permanently
J. J.
A relaxing outdoor space that many will enjoy!
T. L.

E. J. F.
Love the history of the soldiers playing football, nice church 😊
M. D. I. P.
I love how this place had been put to such good and varied use. We've been to a couple of open air cinema nights. Often when I drive past there seems to be something different going on.
B. F.
Very interesting church ruins with a good exhibit on how the World War II bombings impacted Liverpool.
D. Z.
Interesting place, espacially appreciated the statue "Truce".
R. d. J.
Well worth a visit. One of the few places in Liverpool that reminds you of the bombings in WW2. Donate a pound or two.
j. d.
Fantastic peaceful visit.
V. S.
What a place! More events need to happen here!
T. M.
Fantastic place to visit..one of liverpools greatest sights to see, summer time especially when you can sit in the gardens and enjoy a drink well into the evening..plenty of pubs, restaurants all around this old church..
M. W. (.
Lovely calm place to sit and enjoy the cafe here in the city centre. Ordering is easy to do. Lots always happening so keep a check on the website so you don't miss out .
N. L. P.
My second favorite. This church is undervalued since the Liverpool cathedral takes all the credit since is taller and larger. This one, is beautiful and it is worth to see it. You can also go walking from downtown or on your way or way back from the Cathedral. This city is just awesome to walk to.
D. M.
Brilliant place to visit. Lots of history.
C. 9.
Beautiful ruined church which is a somewhat lesser known attraction. My dogs were allowed in and they loved it. We were very pleased as not many tourist attractions in the city are dog friendly. 10/10 recommend
R. E.
This is a real and unique space. Fantastic as a performance space will definitely go again. The staff have a great personality as well as the building itself
G. G.
This is st Luke's church now owned by Liverpool city council and known as the bombed out church. During the day the space is open for visitors to sit or wander round and later on during the day a bar operates on the site.
It was bombed by the Luftwaffe during the second world war and suffered extensive damage. The people of Liverpool campaigned for it to remain as it is to serve not only as a reminder to generations to come by also as a centre of contemplation and of hope. The bombed out church is still part of the parish of St Luke in the city and serves as a community hub in a very different way to how it once did but still reaches out widely. There is a recently installed war memorial in the garden to the right of the entrance depicting a scene from the Christmas day truce at the battle of the Somme with a British and a German soldier shaking hands.
F. V.
Absolutely stunning old church, a must see while in Liverpool
J. I.
Should always make the effort to look around the bombed out church... got it's name for a reason...
J. R. (.

D. L.
Great cafe outside and church is amazing. Watched play inside, great evening, highly recommend.
M. B.
I went to the bombed out church beer festival at Saint Luke's Church. There was an amazing selection of great real ale from all over the country plus a good local section. The venue within the church is fabulous. I spent some time just walking around the gardens and looking at the building. It is great see a building like this being brought back to life with events like this.
m.
Iconic part of the city. Stands tall near the city, reminding tourists of how the wars could leave such a scar on such beautiful buildings

lots going on here all the time, from dancing, drumming, open cinema, music events, weddings. Even for a pint and enjoy the church, feels like you are in a secluded garden but you are slap bang in the middle of the city centre.

I think the whole idea of the restaurant and cafe in the gardens around the church is a welcome retreat from Bold Street shops. It's a reminder of our war past and the memorial in the gardens is really touching along with the lovely gardens. Definitely worth a visit.

Unique and atmospheric place!

Excellent venue for a play - very atmospheric. Seeing bats fly round against the gothic silhouettes at dusk added to that.
R. S.
The grounds are interesting to walk around and it really feels like you're able to enjoy a slice of history in an otherwise modern setting.
The bar within the grounds is reasonably priced and I look forward to spending further afternoons here, enjoying a few drinks in the sun appreciating both the architecture and historical significance of the church.
M. K.
A place full of character and a local landmark.
From inside the building you can look up and see the stars.
J. Z.
A beautiful and moving historical monument.
M. b.
Such a lovely guy and such a relaxing place. We got there and it was empty but as more people started to come in and ring the wish gong it really added to the atmosphere. Small donation of £1 for entry but worth it. Keep this place open to the public for sure

Cute little venue with some craft fair going on today. Great to see a big classic space that isn't being just reconstructed after being destroyed by the war but kept as it is as a monument to that piece of history. Really worth a visit

Excellent venue, good range of beers etc, friendly staff and good Covid precautions. The venue itself is, as the name suggests, an old bombed out church and is a stunning place to sit in the sun and have a glass or two of something. Also an interesting lace to visit just because of the historical background

Beautiful surrounding in the heart of the city centre. I went to watch a short play based on the football match played between English and German soldiers during WW1 and they couldn't have picked a better venue, which just added to the allround atmosphere. Well worth a look if your visiting the city centre

Just think it is interesting that they keep this bombed church as an memory of the war.
I thought it was quite impressive. Unfortunately I couldn't go in. Not sure if it is because of the time of the year (Christmas)

St Luke's Bombed out Church is am amazing quiet space right in the heart of the city. Its our favourite place to chill for a while after the buzz of the city .We could not believe our fortune when we where able to hire it for my daughter's wedding ,when she rang them after being let down by our previous venue and they said the only date left on the calendar was the date we had arranged the wedding for it just seemed like fate.It is the most spectacular place for a wedding and Laura the venue manager could not be a nicer or more helpful person ,also the team that own and run the glass marquis where really helpful and nice as well ,and the glass marquis is beautifully decorated with the white whisteria and lights and great sized dancefloor and bar and was very comfortable with the heating which turned out essential even in June .We have had wonderful feedback off guests and I can't thank Laura and her team enough for making our day special .We will definatly be visiting our quiet place again 🌈💕xx
K. W.

Beautiful place to visit, so much character and is one of the many places in Liverpool that need to be treasured and protected

W. R. E.
This place has garden parties, a beer garden often, events within the Liverpool community, I is next to the city center commerce and travel facilities. Worth jumping into have a swatch, a very interesting part of the heritage of Merseyside with an interesting tale to tell, ask some of the friendly residents in sure they will fill your head with many stories of yesteryear
T. S.
Very part of Liverpool heritage
K. F.
Attended a wedding reception and the venue was exactly right for the occasion. Permanent marquee in place within the walls of the church very spacious and well kitted out. All who attended had a great night.
D. B.
Attended during the pandemic for the bar in the gardens. Personally felt the prices for drinks and food were expensive.
S. J.
Registered monument but we went to a Christmas market and it was very enjoyable
S. E. -. S.
This thoughtful memorial really makes a point. Go around the right side and you may be able to slip inside.
The statue of the German and English soldiers playing with a ball delivers a strong message.

Always Stunning and Beautiful
T. S.
Very interesting to see and you are not allowed to go inside due too safety reasons
R. D.
Unfortunately it was closed at the time of my visit, but it's a very moving reminder of the destructions of war.
It's lovely that Liverpool Council bought it and preserved it for people to have a place for thoughtful contemplation.
Even from the outside it makes you realise how amazing it is that it survived at all.
b. b.
Not a lot to see. But worth a visit just for the history.
I. A.
Outdoorsy seating, what's not to love !
R. V.
Although having two very busy main roads at its sides the tranquility you feel once inside the gates is amazing. The gardens are well kept and the statue from the 1st world war does not look out of place.
C. H.
Meh. Could be so much more beautiful inside. Very disappointing.
S. L.

Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. The entrance fee is a contribution to the upkeep. It is what it says a bombed out Church.
B. I.
A must visit place in Liverpool incredibly well maintained ruins of a church and many of the proceeds go towards the poor of the city it is a voluntary contribution but some very interesting information is provided inside the ruins

I went to a gin festival here and even though it was raining it really was beautiful in here. There were marquees up with lovely flowers in. The toilets were small cabins with toilets in but were clean.

X. Z.
Very smart church with it's unique charm. If you are a poor Singaporean like me, spent that 1 euro on St George Hall instead.
A. C.
I find it amazing how great this bombed out church is preserved. From the outside you would even say it has no problem. I liked its architectural style more than that of the Liverpool Cathedral. Of course this one is not as imposing and is empty inside but still. The walls look great and it is nice to see how the sunlight plays on what is left. There is also a nice little garden around.
M. M.
