Reviews of St George-in-the-East Church

Although the church was closed, the park is pleasant and near a mural at the site of Cable Street, an historic site during the 1930s.

We hired the main church as a rehearsal space for our community band.
Fabulous space and acoustics, can't wait to perform there again when the world re-opens fully!

Grade I Listed Hawksmoor designed Baroque church (restored interior) on a wide footprint.
A rich and intriguing parish history includes an involvement and commitment to new migrant communities and ensuing renown for the welcoming hands-on support and succour offered.
Set in a plain grassed area and garden( former cemetery) next to St.George Town Hall with the Cable Street mural and old nature centre ruins in immediate proximity.

A normal Anglican church (not high, not low, not "happy slappy") with an outstanding commitment to supporting the local and wider communities. The building is listed, being an almost 300 years old Hawksmoor, with renovation from WW2 bomb damage done in a thoughtful 1960s style which, amazingly, works very well. It is now a "resource church" for the CoE and there are three vicars (thankfully one is female) who conduct services along with two curates who are a married couple. Well worth a visit!

Beautiful exterior, it was closed when I arrived, when the hours say it should be opened. Unfortunately, The grounds were covered in rubbish and there were groups of teens smoking weed and a group of men that kept harassing me when I was walking and sitting down on the benches outside.

From the outside this is an iconic church, but the interior exudes a 60s rebuild: a disappointing sterile and spartan architecture surrounded by a much earlier glory.

If you ever feel lonely or want to connect with people of faith or want tranquility , visit this church.

I was given a very warm welcome at this beautiful church today, Christmas morning. Thank you for the prayers offered for my son.
