An awesome treasure. Glad it is listed and saved. Tucked away in a back street but packed with social history. A truly beautiful peaceful place in the centre of a city. Thank you.

St George's German Lutheran Church is a church in Alie Street, Whitechapel just to the east of the City of London. From its foundation in 1762 until 1995 it was used by German Lutherans. Today the small vestry serves as an office for the Historic Chapels Trust and the church is available for hire for secular events. St George's was the fifth Lutheran church to be built in London. It is now the oldest surviving German Lutheran church in the United Kingdom.

I hope to visit St. George's some day. In 1764, my ancestors, the Dorst's from Germany were left stranded in London when the captain who they'd paid to bring them to America dumped them. The members of this church allowed the 300 Palatine refugees to stay there for several months. King George III gave them a land grant in Carolina with two ships that took them to Charlestown. My family is still in South Carolina and I am very grateful for what the congregants of St. George's did for us.

This church has a very interesting history of the German community in London. Well worth a visit.
