Reviews of St Mary-le-Bow Church
J. F.
Small and gorgeous. Stunning stained glass windows and interesting Jesus on crucifix. Whilst there a talented young man played the organ which was wonderful.
M. D.
Slim pinnacle that is dwarfed by its bigger neighbour St Paul's but the church is recorded in song, by every living Cockney, who is so called because they were born within the sound of it's bell. Such a lovely song.

One of the many churches that were destroyed during the Great Fire of London. This is another of the restored churches designed by Sir Christopher Wren. Much of the architecture showcase Wrens signature designs and features. The main thing that's obviously not are the stained glass, which along with much of the church were destroyed (again) during World War Two. The stained glass have a much more modern, fantastic design. Worth a small detour if in the area.

A beautiful Wren-designed church!

St Mary-le-Bow is a beautiful Church, which has so much character and charm, nested into a cozy part of Cheapside. There is a lovely cafe available if you with to enjoy a meal during your visit.

This is my first visiting in this pub and the staff really welcoming ,charming ,specially the owner.normally we always meet with friends to drinks at sports pub in Stratford but this time we decided to go local pub and we really enjoy the atmosphere and overall really enjoyable and highly recommend

Christopher Wren will be well impressed with the church having undergone 4 months stone restoration to the four finials and pot du fur (pot of fire) and the stone gallery balustrades to the clock tower.

Grade I Listed, Baroque church attributed to Wren.
Historically associated in fact and fable with the regulatory pealing of bells serving as timekeeper to working London.
The rebuilt interior is not especially memorable with a cafe in the ancient crypt and an exterior surrounded by inconsequential buildings that hardly enhance the precinct. Associations with Australia commemorated here the reason being;
“....I do not know says the great bell of Bow.”

A beautiful old Church that has a wonderful history and means so much to the lifestory of London.

St. Mary-le-Bow is one of my favourite churches in London.
It is a small and very cute church that, like St. Paul's Cathedral, was rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666. If you are in the area, I absolutely recommend you to go inside. Its Norman crypt is the oldest parochial building in London still in use, and it is worth seeing.

great place to have Christmas Carol together, free to join

Designed by Sir Christopher Wren this iconic church is famous for it's peal of bells. You're a true Cockney if you were born within their sound.

A beautiful church that is a part of London history. It is a quiet space amidst the hustle of the outside and is a real sanctuary of peace. The cafe in the crypt serves excellent food and drink and is a real haven. A real blessing in the heart of the city and well worth a visit

There is also a café in the lower ground.

I have to say I really do adore this lovely church. The spire is acknowledges as being one of Wren's finest and most majestic in the City of London and it's up in the belfry hang the fabled bow bells. To be a cockney you must be born within the sound of Bow Bells. However, for me one of the treasures of the church is the lovely old crypt chapel reached down a flight of stairs in the south west corner of the churchyard. It's such a peaceful and tranquil place and has a magical ambiance to it that keeps the 21st century ell at bay.

Wonderful Church, have a walk all around the outside first then inside its beautiful, maybe have a cupper in the crypt cafe, the sounds of the bells of St Mary le Bow travelled across East London and if you was born within the the sounds of the bells then you were said to be a true Cockney.

Costermongers or Pearly Kings harvest festival thanksgiving service is a fantastic time to be here, to offer thanksgiving for the year past and year ahead, a gorgeous church inside.
Festivities start off on the day at Guildhall and then a parade of the Pearly kings and Morris dancers and others at 3pm head to the church service at St Mary le Bow.
Was good to attend the service and handout provided and take photos of the interior afterwards.
The bells rang for a good half hour after the service and are so lovely to listen to

Born in The City of London Maternity Hospital in
1932. Makes me a cockney, but raised in Kent, so never
Picked up the lingo. This is my first view of the
Famous building. Looks alright to me. A lot of glass and concrete surrounding it though.

Simply grand and acoustically brilliant place in which to sing. Tonight was The Salopian Club's Epiphany service, the choir of which I was kindly invited to join.

Welcoming church with great restaurant in undercroft. Especially loved the phrase about promoting "reasonable religion" as reasonableness is in short supply in so many spheres today.

Where the origins of the cockney originated...
One had to be born within the hearing of this church bells to be considered a cockney...
M. G.
Double-check the map before you go – as well as in it's rightful place in Cheapside, Google Maps shows a non-existent St Mary le Bow near Holborn Circus!

(Translated) Note for the bell tower and its bells (the story tells that only those who could hear these bells ringing could be called an "authentic" Londoner), in fact it is the reconstruction of a much older church (in whose crypt a pub now stands).
(Original)
Nota per il campanile e relative campane (la storia racconta che solo chi riusciva a sentire queste campane suonare poteva dirsi un londinese "autentico"), di fatto è la ricostruzione di una chiesa molto più antica (nella cui cripta sorge oggi un pub).
