The first church on this site is dated from Saxon times, and is known to have been built on even earlier foundations of Roman bricks. The mediaeval church buuilt by 1280, was replaced by another in 1715 (this was built higher to prevent flooding) and the tower added in 1747. In the churchyard is the tomb of Prince Lee Boo, son of a King of a Pacific Ocean island. The captain brought the Prince to London to learn about England but sadly died of small pic in 1784. The crew of the Mayflower ship worshipped here & buried in the crypt.

Great historical building. Sunday mass was very prayerful.

Beautiful old fashioned church. All the covid guidelines adhered to, set in a nice green. To the back of the church was the Brunel museum and wonderful cobbled streets, with old fashioned properties, very near to the river Thames. Truly a bygone era.

I love this place. It's my local church, but being from the US it's also going full circle. The Capt. of the Mayflower, Christopher Jones, and his crew, were Rotherhithe locals and we're parishioners here. Christopher Jones is buried in the graveyard here, but nobody knows where because he wasn't famous at that time!
There is a monument to him and the Pilgrims in the churchyard, and the Mayflower oub is just across the street. Cumberland Wharf Park, where the Mayflower departed from for the North American colonies, is just down the street.
A lot of the wood in the church was also salvaged from the Mayflower.
On the spiritual and community side, it's just as good as it's long history - warm and welcoming to all, and also supports a wide range of community activities. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Beautiful church. I visited between services so had time to admire history and the architecture as well as the profound sense of peace that this church carries.

This is a beautiful church with fantastic history. More importantly, it has thriving and loving community, with clergy who are always ready to listen or visit people in the parish. Visit the website to find out more, or pop in one Sunday at 10am to get the real experience.

Lovely historic church and cemetery, parts of this church used wood from the Fighting Temeraire, one of Nelson's flagships. This ship was broken up at the end of it's life at a local yard which was located now where The Old Salt Quay pub is.
The church is well worth looking up and visiting also because of the connections with the Mayflower and the Pilgrim Father's.(Give this a Google search for details).
Also a bit of history that is infamous is that the body of Jack"The Hat"Mcvitie was left wrapped in eiderdown up against the gates of the church in the 60s.He was an associate of the Krays.Jack was murdered by one of the Krays and his body was taken by car through the Rotherhithe Tunnel and left by the church as a "message"to the Richardson's of South London, they were the enemies of the Krays south of the river.
If you visit the church also try The Mayflower pub which is really nice or The Angel pub on a nice day which is located right next to the ruins of Edward 3rds Manor House. The Angel is about a 5 min walk from the church travelling westwards along the river path via the warehouses which are now upmarket apartments. The Angel pub has good rustic food and a small balcony overlooking the river with a view of Tower Bridge to the left about a mile in the distance.
