Reviews of St. Paul's, Clapham

Best birthday party for a little princess as she turned 4, and the most helpful clean up crew ❤️❤️

Was a very nice church plenty of room inside. And the organ sounded very good.Could hear over the mic. The down side there was not parking in the grounds so had to park in the street and put a note in car say we were at a funeral. Saw parking attendant to tell him what was happening and he said he would not give any of use a ticket, as would normally.

There is a beautiful garden behind this church. You must see this. I will return to have a look at the beehives

This is on the site of Clapham's mediaeval church, from when the place was a little village in the fields. It was demolished and rebuilt in 1815, as a decent enough neo-Classical God-box with no Wrenesque pretensions. The plaque above the entrance door saying "Chapel" was a reminder to folk then that the parish had moved to the new Holy Trinity on the Common. Extended in 1875 to make a proper church, but downsized again with the Victorian east end now containing ancillary ranges. What you see outside is not what you get within. I found it open on a Thursday afternoon, which was very welcome -especially since Holy Trinity was locked up.

I have grown up local to this spot and seen it change in all sorts of ways over the years, (from tales of the old lady who kept the wolf dogs during the 1960s, to some dark human deeds during the 1970s /80s).
If go back in English history a little to the English Civil War, you'll find that not only was Clapham was a Rebel Stronghold, but St Paul's was a burial place for Roundhead Fatalaties in local, (Battersea), battles.
