Reviews of St Paul’s Church Covent Garden
F.
Such a hidden gem, I’ve been to Covent Garden like 100 times but only discovered this lovely peaceful place lately. The cats are adorable (I let them play with my shoe laces :D). This is one of those places that make you feel grateful about life.
M. H.
An imposing building and place of worship with rich history it occupies one side of Covent Garden area. The strange thing is that there is no entry from the Covent Garden but to add to the confusion one has to go all the way round to Bedford St to gain entry to the Church!
K. N.
It's been to long since I visited this area, now because the Christmas decorations this year is very beautiful I have a great time visiting
D. D. R.
Beware beautiful inviting church garden, but cynical church which does not allow "sightseeing". I wanted to go inside to see the church but got put off by the sign. I dont identify with the faith but would have loved to respectfully visit and see the inside. Anyway, garden is still good for chilled hangout anf lunches.
M. D.
The main entrance to the "Actors" church is to the rear along an alleyway. The visible façade is bricked in and provides the backdrop for the many street entertainers. Such a unique place in London History.
G. M.
I have been there in 24th of December night. There was a nice ceremony for Christmas. Thanks to the Priest was a nice experience for me.
J. S.
This is a beautiful little church - very central and a certain hidden gem.
Know as the actors church, there are plaques for various well know stars of the past.
There was a beautiful little charity Christmas card sale happening when we went. Lovely acoustics and a nice group of musicians practicing for a concert. Check out this lovely place.
t. s.
the wall panels are full of plaques dedicated to famous characters of theatre and cinema like peter o'toole and charlie chaplin. you'll receive the visit of two resident cats 🙂
K. R.
I thought the church inside was beautiful... Saint Paul's Church is also known as the Actors Church & linked to famous people. I had recently lost my dad when I called into this church and it was a beautiful place to light a candle and reflect. Very peaceful inside even though it is so busy outside of course. They also have concerts & a lovely little garden. Definitely worth popping in if you are in the area.
B.
Directly on Covent Garden, you can find a lovely little church and garden. This is the St. Paul's Church (also known as the Actors' Church) not to be confused with London's famous St. Paul's Cathedral.
The Actor's Church has been at this location since 1633. It is a nice but simple church to visit, we mostly enjoyed the courtyard and garden area around the church, providing quite pleasant refuge from the surrounding neighbour and busy Covent Garden square.
In the end, not a priority attraction in our opinion but a pleasant historic church to see if you happen to be in Covent Garden and like church visits. Its a nice way to spend 10-15 minutes of your time.
A. R.
The gardens are pleasant to sit in. The church has numerous plaques to actors & actresses of the West End stage including Joan Sims, Hattie Jacques, Richard Wattis and Rachel Roberts.
A. B.
I have attended a classical music concert at St Paul's Church in Covent Garden with some extremely talented musicians at the beginning of their career. A great evening, indeed!
G. W.
Lovely acoustics and a nice group of musicians practicing for a concert. Excellent and humorous vicar.
Well worth a visit. There are so many different artist around this area that can blow your mid away with there shows. They also have concerts & a lovely little garden. I thought the church inside was beautiful...
G. S.
A hidden gem just yards from the hustle of Covent Garden. Well worth a visit to enjoy the history and peace in this beutiful building. Enjoy the tranquil garden for some rest and thought before returning to the busy streets outside.
T. P.
What a beautiful church right opposite Covent Garden
N.
Very interesting church, dedicated to actors. Went to a concert of Eclectic Voices and Highbury Youth Choirs. Excellent concert.
B.
Quite a way from st. Paul's cathedral but still in its shadow, is St Paul's Church. Entering the back way, one gets away from the tourist crowds and can have a quiet sit down on the benches outside. Venturing inside you may meet Eliza or Mrs Higgins, the two kittens that belong to the church.
o. j.
Visited for a wedding. The church is small and intimate with great designs. The gardens were so quiet it was hard to believe we were in the middle of Covent garden .The vicar is one of the best. The choir was excellent. Overall lovely place to get married.
R. B.
A very lovely little church in London's Covent garden...a quiet, green, calm sunny, peaceful place to reflect and collect yourself..its a spiritual place, When Punch and Judy was first performed in England it was outside this church.performers still ply their trade in front of it...its a place for costermongers, and market traders...Actors, and opera goers...in its grounds is an equestrion statue of the conversion of st Paul...we could all go there and see the light
L. B.
For a concession and adult ticket was £26 this is quite a lot. The catherdral is absolutley stunning and is filled with history and artifactures. There is a basement where many famous men of british history have been buried. If you find yourself climbing 300 stairs to the top of the dome you will be brethtaken by the view of London city where you can see many famous landmarks.
S. A.
Historic Actor's Church in the heart of Covent Garden, as you enter there is a beautiful garden which is an incredible sanctuary to sit in and meditate. The Church itself is grand and has a resident cat.
S. C.
In the Pod, ‘Shuga Fixx vs the Illuminati’, awesome alternative theatre, with banging tunes, the lizard king and a totally awesome girl group
A. C.
A very nice and peaceful place with a wonderful garden in the heart of Covent Garden. The bad thing is that when they have a concert sometimes they don't let you in to pray.
D. S.
Stunning old church in Covent Garden
Lovely grounds
Theatre lovers will adore the nameplates and history of some of the old patrons of the church
An oasis of calm in central London
Well worth a visit to have a few minutes quiet reflection away from the hustle and bustle of city life
d. c.
Lovely quiet place in the middle of Covent Garden... well worth a visit - sit and rest a while...
U. W.
I love walking through the courtyard at the end of my run from the other side of embankment straight into St Paul's courtyard. . Calming effect and you see people sitting quietly having lunch or reading a book. This is my goto run every trip I make to London
c. D.
A very beautiful church. Its the actors church. You should visit at least once in your life.
S. B.
Beautiful little church near Covent Garden. Also performance venue.
J. H.
Attended the Carol Service last week, a wonderful evening of music, song and prayer...and a free buffet for the community afterwards
m. k.
Amazing interior. Played 'spot the plaque'! Needs microphone working correctly - even trained actors i struggled to hear succinctly
S. L. B.
Beautiful building, friendly and welcoming staff, perfect for a peaceful break in the madness of a day in Central London
S. M.
Cute little place to sit around and enjoy the beauty of Covent! Yes, it can be depressing to be in this area surrounded by brands you would want buy but cant afford too but this open area more like a square is for everyone. Restaurants charge extra for dine in so why not take a takeaway and sit here and enjoy your meal while the sun falls on your face perfectly and someone or the other is always performing a trick for you or maybe just singing n dancing for you. This will make you feel London in a new light and shift your mood from what an expensive city to what a lovely experience.
K. C.

I enjoyed a concert there. amidst the memorials to the great and good of the theatre.
P. F.
We performed with London Show Choir here in this beautiful space. Some of the greats of film, theatre, dance and production adorn the walls of this beautiful church. The organ and ornate ceiling and the setting next to the plaza I'm Covent Garden make this a must-see London visitor spot.
I. P.
The actor's church, devoted to theatre more than 300 years. They also use it as a stage to perform plays.
M. S.
Just a beautiful and calm setting amongst the hustle and bustle of Covent Garden.
D. S.
Lovely place to see quietly, away from the madness of Old London Town. Saturdays they sell tea and cake for a cancer charity.
B.
The little garden of the actors’ church, luckily forgotten by tourists
P. F.
Watched an amazing show last night Shoes 👟 to Fill at the Iris Theatre in the Garden of the Church what a great place to go for s summer's evening
P. B.
Peaceful gardens, lots of rose bushes, lots of benches dedicated to deceased actors, singers and musicians plus theatre supporters. Of course a beautiful church, known as the actor's church...many people have packed lunches here.
D. R.
This is one of the best places that you can spend your free time in the city. There are so many different artist around this area that can blow your mid away with there shows. There are a lot of people most of the time and you can enjoy even a full day there. In the area you gonna find a lot of good places to eat and to get drink.
M. b. t. C.
Went to see my beautiful friend Nadine Benjamin sing her opera heart out. Utterly moving.
Y. C.
Nice place cause some seats in the square for people to take a break and enjoy peaceful mood.
S. M.
Saw live music great. Lovely church worth visiting, known as the actors church.
L. E.
I saw Macbeth here, and Hansel and Gretal, both were brilliant. I love this theatre space and would definitely recommend it. Friendly, professional and great fun.
Z. C. (.
A lovely church in a really busy area
C. M.
The staff is very kind and very helpful. They have plaques on the wall to remembers the famous artists. A lot of famous artists have had their work in here. The inside have a beautiful garden. every sunday you can go into the church and sit and relax. they offer tea and coffee etc.
D. B.
Wonderful and welcoming, friendly church in the heart of Covent Garden; for obvious reasons known as the Actors' Church. Beautiful inside, in more ways than could apply to any of us.
D. W.
Watched evening performance of the hunchback of notre dame. The performance was really good, the transitions from different stages clever and seemless and the audience participation natural and funny. The cast of six are incredibly talented to cover so many roles and still play their main parts so well. In addition to playing all the instrument parts themselves. If you haven't seen this, there last preformance is tomorrow and worth seeing.
M. R.
Beautiful church nestled in the heart of Covent Garden. A quiet place for contemplation when compared to the hustle and bustle outside.
E. J.
Pretty church there is almost always entertainment outside too
S. K.
This place is amazing with surprises around each corner. You have a lot of delicious food places. Places to sit and unwind. And if you go during the day or afternoon. You can be lucky enough to see one or multiple people performing.
H. D.
This is a fine little church in the heart of Covent Garden’s bustle. There is a false rumour circulating about in certain publications called “Welcome to London” or “Tips for Visitors to London”. These are actually practical joke sheets with very poor advice. The bit for this church - which you are well advised to ignore - says:
“St. Paul’s church in Covent Garden is known as ‘the actors church’. The connection to the theatrical profession is reflected in the service. During the lesson, anytime the reader says something like “Abraham begat Isaac”, visitors are expected to get up and say “Oh, no he didn’t”.
J. W.
A peaceful church just next to the jolly markets.
A.
Really peaceful and beautiful spot in a hub of tourism
Z. P.
Great concert by the London film orchestra
R. D.
The actors church, seen 2 productions of the 3 musketeers there, a 'free' show using scaffolding on the front elevation in the 90s, that included a wonderful bakery scene and in 2018, using different areas of the garden and the church itself
D. N.
Every year in the Month of may a Maypole is erected in the grounds of the church, and the public are invited to join in the traditional dance around it, also, there is held at the same time the Punch and Judy shows, whereby a dozen or more shows are held during the day, it is a very colourful scene
not to be missed.
M. S.
Did not even know it existed, and it is right there, in Covent Garden! I enjoyed it so much. All along the walls, there are plaques of famous British people (actors, actresses, and playwrights such as Vivien Leigh (Gone with the Wind), Stanley Holloway (My Fair Lady), Noel Coward (author of Private Lives), Boris Karloff (Frankenstein), and Robert Shaw (Jaws). It was so interesting!
j. b.
With the famous portico facing the throngs on Covent Garden serving as a backdrop to street performers, rather slip around to enter the 'actors' church and small enclosed garden with a surfeit of park benches, to admire the simple but impressive interior.
Grade I Listed, attributed to Inigo Jones and worth the diversion.
K. C.
Les miserable is soooooo 👏 awesome 👏
m. t.
The garden is amazing, and it has a bunch of famous artists who passed. There is also British history of people who've gotten buried. It also has live performances.
D. T.
One of my fav places in London especially in good weather when you can sit in the nice garden on a bench and have a break from the city in the middle of the city...it is a great place to consume your budget lunch you can by at the huge Tesco nearby.
A. 3.
Beautiful church and tranquil central garden, in an otherwise busy tourist trap of covent garden hoardes. Has an idiosyncratic "last orders" style clearout at closing time, very amusing.
H. C.
Beautiful old church with an interesting history.
A. M.
Lovely church friendly people also we were very very lucky to find that they were hosting a show for the month of August played by the Left side ( Notre Dame) it was absolutely fantastic so fortunate to stumble upon it if you are visiting Covent garden during August give it a shot you won't be diapointed and great value for money
J. A.
Beautiful building. Went to see the London Show Choir there, brilliant choir and the acoustics were wonderful
J. J.
It has a small area of grass and some plants and trees. For some reason people choose to sit on the benches though so often I can sit and eat my lunch in such a way that I can nearly pretend I'm not in London.
J. M.
Just watched, Iris Theatre, at St Pauls. The Hunchback of Notre Dame'. What a great performance. Not your usual production. Will definately be going again.
T. B.
Really lovely and friendly church in the heart of the west end. Perfect place to go for reflection and prayer...in the middle of buzztle. There's service during the day and evening...
S. K.
Went to the May Fayre with the parade of Punch and Judy professors that walk around Covent Garden Streets and end up at the Church - it is a local tradition which is very much enjoyed by many both in the local community and visitors to the area
c. l.
Beautiful old church with a history linked to famous theatre performers. Well worth a visit when in Covent Garden.
L. S.
Home also to a statue named the Conversion of St Paul was sculpted by Bruce Denny. St Paul's Church is a church in Covent Garden, London. and the statue stands in the grounds of the Church that was designed by Inigo Jones as part of a commission for the 4th Earl of Bedford in 1631 to create "houses and buildings fit for the habitacion of Gentlemen and men of ability". As well as being the parish church of Covent Garden, the church has gained the nickname of "the actors' church" by a long association with the local theatre community.
Completed in 1633, St Paul's was the first entirely new church to be built in London since the Reformation.
This life size sculpture depicts St. Paul being struck by the light that blinded him on the road to Damascus, initiating his conversion to Christianity
S. J.
Beautiful... Serene and a friendly church!
W.
Used by many actors, a lot of whom have plaques inside commemorating them. Excellent and humorous vicar.
Well worth a visit.
G. M.
Memorials to many famous actors of the last 200 or so years. Quiet space next to Covent Garden..
C.
Beautiful garden in the hart of London. Historical Church dedicated to the arts. I really like it. Charity ship at the entrance.
S. K.
Lovely place to visit
J. A.
St Paul's Church was built in 1633, is located in front of Covent Garden Market, and there is a beautiful garden at the west entrance that is located behind the church.
A. W.
Very calm place to gather your thoughts in the hustle and bustle of London. It also has the bonus of a market area in the grounds.
M. E.

R. M.
St Paul's Church is beautiful, with a very well maintained court yard where many people come to enjoy their lunches or for small group gatherings.

(Translated) The small church, also known as the "artists' church", due to its links with the art world, overlooks the famous square of Covent Garden; it was built in 1633 and its beautiful 'Portico Toscano', with its 4 columns, was to be the main entrance to the church, but it was preferred today's entrance, in red brick, from Bedford street, preceded by a beautiful garden roses furnished with benches.

(Translated) Located opposite Covent Garden, it was built between 1631 and 1633, being consecrated in 1638. In 1795 it suffered a great fire, rebuilding itself in Victorian style, although its impressive portico in Tuscan style was saved. This portico is not the main entrance of the church, which is accessed through a door that opens to the left, crossing a beautiful garden. It is known as the "church of the actors", since in its surroundings the Theater Royal and the Covent Garden Theater were established. In fact, during my visit there was a group of actors rehearsing inside that, by the way, there is nothing special about it. Currently (November 2020), it is closed due to restrictions imposed as a result of COVID-19; It is scheduled to open on December 2, allowing entry only to practice prayer individually, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 11.00 to 13.00.

(Translated) The place plays an important role in the book "The Rivers of London". At the artists' cemetery .... no, preferably not spoilers. Read the book and watch it! Now I know what Punch and Judy is all about.

(Translated) The church of the artists offered us the rehearsal of a concert of four very young girls with a remarkable talent. Apart from the pronaos with Tuscan columns, it does not have any particular architectural beauty to offer, but it is difficult to pass through here without getting some musical gratification for the ear.

La chiesa degli artisti ci ha offerto le prove di un concerto di quattro giovanissime ragazze con un notevole talento. (Translated) Very beautiful catholic church with an impressive text that welcomes you. Around the church there are some benches where you can sit and rest, eat something or read. (Translated) Iglesia de San Pablo, also known as Iglesia de Actores, is a church designed by Iñigo Jones as part of a commission by Francis Russell, 4th Earl of Bedford in 1631 to create "houses and buildings for the dwellings of the men and women of capacity in Covent Garden, London, England In addition to being Covent Garden's parish church, the church earned its nickname from a long association with the theater community.
St Paul's was the first entirely new church to be built in London since the Reformation. The design of the church, and the design of the plaza, has been attributed to Iñigo Jones since the 17th century, although documentary evidence of the undertaking is lacking.
