Reviews of St Paul's, Harringay
An amazing piece of Modern architecture. Awarded 8th Best Modern Church, its form is based on the a Greek megaron.
Church rebuilt in 1993, all post-modern elementary, geometric shapes.
Primeval, bold and simple with no recourse to nostalgia - evokes a bar of 'Toblerone' and children's basic building-blocks and the perfect response to the local surrounding regimented grid-pattern street layout.
Warrants a diversion if adrift in the neighbourhood or a lost soul.
An active community.
I'll be honest. The building is not to my taste. I can live with the interior decor but the outside is truly nasty! And I'm being kind. But it's what goes on inside that interests me. I'll confess some bias. I know the current vicar. He's a friend. And he's terrific. I mean, he wouldn't be a friend if he wasn't terrific. If truth be told. But it's the people that make this place. And make me want to forget the building they meet in. Quite how such an enormous building can produce an inside space of such unexpected disproportionately is beyond me. But much in life is. But it's like the opposite of the tardis. If you're looking for a recommendation for a church building then go elsewhere. If you're looking for a recommendation for a church then land here.
Harmony and peaceful
