Reviews of The Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas

Lovely to walk around. Steeped in history that us well documented and explained, with interactive guide screens. There's a superb display of wedding gowns on at the moment, which was delightful. Well worth allowing time for a visit!
P. S.
Nice looking Cathedral. Went in there by chance and walked into a orchestra practice for an upcoming concert. Very nice acoustics. There was also a wedding dress exposition there at the time which was interesting though not my cup of tea.
C. G.
Visited the Cathedral because of Cafe 16 - the cafe in the Refectory - for meetings, because the coffee and cakes are so good and I wanted happy meet-ers. They served up great grub!
The new refurbishment of the Cathedral means it is so much more accessible and welcoming. The historical interpretation is really good - audiovisual displays and lighting that tell the story of people whose Ledger Stones are in the Cathedral. (Ledger Stones are memorial slabs that don't cover a grave). It's beautiful as a tourist attraction but also a great worship space. I have attended Mass and Evensong there in beautiful settings with amazing choral singing and a thunderous organ. Worth a visit for do many reasons
N. D.
A beautiful cathedral if somewhat smaller than usual. Peace and tranquility in a frantically busy city. The quire was particularly beautiful, a pity the organ was silent, it certainly looked to be a fine instrument.
A. M.
The new and improved cathedral inner is wonderful. I last visited before covid and attended a concert, I recently visited as rehearsals for the Vivaldi concert were on and the acoustics have not altered. Still glorious. The new information and the lighting within the cathedral is excellent. I haven't seen the light show yet, but it's on my bucket list!!
I. W.
An oasis of calm and reflection in a busy city. Unlike many other cathedrals in the UK there is no turnstile entry, no fussing guides, simply a place of peace next to the old Keep and on your way to one of Newcastle's iconic bridges.
If you are a visitor drop in to catch a moment of reflection on the eternal. If you are a local, spend longer, it will repay the time.
A. D.
Absolute surprise. Really did not expect Newcastle Cathedral to be so extravagant given the stereotypes droned on about the city but makes perfect sense given it was once a city that ‘housed’ a Roman Fort. The first was then converted into a Castle called “Newcastle” by William the Conqueror. So, of course there’s a grand cathedral here!
R. H.
Really beautiful church in the middle of the city centre. Architecture, statues, and stain glassed windows are gorgeous. Staff very friendly and helpful. Make sure to use the interactive screens to find out more about tombs that can no longer be read.
G.
Great place to visit or assist to religious services. Sometimes there are events such as classical music concerts.
The architectural features of the building are well worth a look. You can also learn more about local history.
It can be a little noisy with the road traffic.
R. C.
Just go in & appriciate the beauty!! You might find something else as well. Staff were very friendly & offered advice outwith the cathedral.
L. J.
Amazing and interesting cathedral, lovely facilities, helpful staff. Events planned. Will return. See their Facebook page for further info.

Apart from the usual beauty and interest of our St Nicholas Cathedral they have a really lovely local wedding dress exhibition on at the moment along with a catalogue available to read alongside with the history of the dresses throughout the decades. So nice to see.
C. M.
We visited for Sung Eucharist and the cathedral is a lovely big space, with chairs facing each other and the centre empty. The readers read on our left and the altar was on our right and you can see everything that's going on The choir was singing a lot so it's not as Congregational as some services but the sermon was thought provoking and the people were friendly. I've never seen offering plates with Card readers on them before. The only down side was parking as my phone wouldn't download the app Pay to Park and you can only park on a meter with cash for an hour. We had to leave before coffee at the end, which was a Shane but we will visit again. An inspiring space.
J. A.
An astonishing building hosting on this occasion, a groundbreaking event...
G. D. G.
Beautiful cathedral with an incredible history.
S.
So beautiful architecture. The inside glass paintings and statues are just work of art. Peaceful feeling is all over.
W.
Gorgeous building. We were lucky enough to drop in during choir practice. The singers sounded very beautiful.
k. p.
Lovely Cathedral well worth a visit
k. g.
Lovely cathedral with plenty to look at.

The St Nicholas Cathedral is a church of Anglican Communion pretty much in Newcastle City Centre. I came as a tourist and found the church very welcoming. Visitors are free to walk in, have a look around and entrance is free. I as lucky enough to visit when there was a choir practicing and it was enjoyable listening to the songs. It's not the biggest cathedral in the world, but beautiful inside. There's a great many outstanding stained glass.
The lantern spires are especially distinctive and looks amazing (from far away).
The church is welcoming to more than just visitors though. A really nice feature of the church is what is in St' Margaret's Chapel. It's child friendly with small chairs and a table, with paper and coloured pencils for children and a mini library of bible themed books.
J. B.
I met friends in there for a cuppa and it's well worth going into. Lots of history and they have organ recitals and change concerts. I'll definitely go back.
A. K.
Loved the cathedral on my visit......calm oasis in the middle of busy Newcastle.
M. H.
A wonderful Cathedral to spend some time wandering and soaking up history. It has one of the best range of stained glass windows I’ve seen in many cathedral’s I’ve visited. The welcome from the staff is warm and friendly. They will help with your enquiries and fill you in with the history and interesting facts about the Cathedral and Newcastle.
H. D.
Lovely cathedral right Next to Newcastle castle in the heart of Newcastle. You will find peace and solitude inside the silence.
Beautiful interiors with lots of statues and art. Has a beautiful organ. Must visit in Newcastle.
E. Ş.
You will be very impressed when you visit inside.
l. k.
Interesting Cathedral with lots of information. Unfortunately some renovation work being done at moment so didn't see it all. A good excuse for a return visit

A great place when there are concerts. A very special place to listen to any kind of music. The atmosphere is captivating and brings a new dimension to the creative mind.
J. F. M.
Very beautiful place. The detail in which the cathedral is constructed is exceptional!!
v. r.
Lovely cathedral so peaceful. Wasn't impressed by the cafe, very small cheese scone and weak cappuccino
P. J.
We really enjoyed our visit to this cathedral and to its cafe afterwards. We were made very welcome by the informative staff. The stained glass windows are wonderful. The food and drink at the cafe is excellent, is good value, and served with a smile! Thank you all for a great visitor experience!
M. T.
Lovely concert of Motzart and Vivald. We are going to the Christmas concert. Well recommended
N. T.
Obviously full of history. Smaller than many cathedrals I have visited.
Had a smashing lunch in the Cafe - good value for money...
C. N.
What a beautiful site! The artistry involved in this cathedral is astounding
A. G.
A real pleasure to visit here. And excellent toffee cake in Cafe 16!
C.
Brilliant building, with a lot interesting facts behind it's history. From the Scots invasion causing damage & the build to claim it's rights to be a Cathedral! To the lone stain glass window!
C. N.
Beautiful cathedral. Well worth visiting. The organist was practising, so that was a bonus.
M. K.
Beautiful cathedral, lovely helpful staff.

Northumbria University Graduation ceremony before everyone arrived.
H. T. D. A.
We didn't actually visit this cathedral but we were close by and took photos while listening to the peel of the bells. It is a wonderful building.
R. W.
A fine building to pop into and spend a few minutes exploring its history, give donations if possible to help maintain the cathedral
E. C.
Presentable and magnificently church in the heart of old town of Newcastle. Tourists have definitely visit this church.
B. R.

R. A.
really beautiful church, in the city centre, near to a lot of important places to visit
H. G.
Went for a great organ recital. The train was cancelled but parking was easier than expected. Staff all very kind, interesting displays. But the cafe was shut.
m. B.
Renovations going on here , an interesting part of the city as it's right next to the castle .
Good that they is no entrance fee unlike quite a few other similar buildings , although they do ask for donations for those who can afford to donate as to contribute to upkeep of the Cathedral .
t. 3.
Amazing place. It's difficult to believe the cathedral that gave Newcastle its city status is so unassumingly small, but look deeper and you will find marvelous gems all round.
S. R.
Lovely Church! There is no charge of entry, but donations are encouraged. There are services everyday with a choir and they are heavenly.
M. O.
Beautiful and well maintained cathedral. Free of charge admission.
L. M.
A nice church in the centre of Newcastle! Admission is free and there is plenty to read and see, and even has a good few activities for younger children to complete.
P. T.
This church has a very unusual but positive vibe. It is what I consider healthy because it is freely open to the public, in quite active use, and well maintained. I have never seen so many and varied chapels, sanctuaries and little prayer nooks inside a cathedral. There were tourists wandering around, a private wedding taking place and a separate social group having a cuppa. All with no fuss or bother. There is rich history documented within too and plenty to see. You could even just sit quietly and feel private while everything else just carried on. A great place to visit.
J. G.
The Cathedral has been transformed by recent renovations that have removed the Victorian pews and given a sense of light and space to one of the most important buildings in Newcastle.
A. K.
A newly renovated cathedral...one of the prides of Newcastle's monument. I was privileged and highly honored by Northumbria University to have my graduation/convocation ceremony in this edifice.
c. M.
Very special place to visit & worship.
W. W.
Beautiful, the woodwork is incredible, the Cathedral was well worth a visit. Staff helpful and did answer questions. Thank you.
A. R.
A lovely cathedral, just a short walk from the railway station and city centre. Very friendly and welcoming. I would visit again.
T. K.
When officially opened from 14th August get straight down and take it all in. The changes are stunning. What a place to visit and experience, but first and foremost, still a church.
R. F.
Quiet place with lots of informative banners stood around. Interesting sculptures, Windows and architecture. Unlike some larger cathedrals this one feels used and quite lively. As such the atmosphere is quiet and reflective but also warm. More like a working church and less like an expansive historical artifact/tourist attraction.
F. B.
Beautiful church steeped in history and so interesting
J. T.
Awesome architecture and a lovely spire.
A. D.
Another beautiful cathedral in a beautiful city. Worth having a look around.
J. G.
Quiet. Smaller than most cathedrals we have visited but it felt more welcoming because of that!
W. S.
Important and wonderful place, beautifully restored with lots of information about the history of the cathedral and Newcastle. Well worth a visit.
J. C.
Well worth a visit ....so much history !!!
There is a stained glass window that is around 500 years old and also lots of other interesting facts regarding the history of Newcastle. You should visit soon as they are removing the original floors and replacing with modern underfloor heating also removing some of the artefacts that will be displayed in other areas of the church......it might change the ambiance. The people who greet you in the church were very friendly and very knowledgeable.....well worth a visit 😁
B. D.
Beautiful, restful, a place to enjoy and to think. Not the biggest or most ornate cathedral you'll ever see but steeped in history and folklore. The stained glass windows are stunning and the organist can certainly bang out a tune or two while you're there. Enjoy it.
C. M.
Friendly reception, beautifully maintained buildings, outstanding music
K. K.
Lovely cathedral
T. C.
Attended an organ recycle here along with a small number of other people, then viewed the interior of this great cathedral. History on every wall but the overall impression is one of emptiness of it has seen better days. Still worth a visit. Nice to sit and be quiet for a while.
B. W.
Small for a Cathedral but none the less beautiful. We saw a homeless man stretched out on a pew, sleeping peacefully and undisturbed, with his old shoes tucked neatly under the seat. This one act of tolerant kindness spoke volumes to me. The world needs more administrations like this.
D. B.
At the moment (March 2020) the nave is closed for new flooring and other building works all hidden by plastic sheeting. The apse and sanctuary are open, no charge but a donation of £5 per person is suggested. We spoke to a very friendly and informative staff member in a splendid red gown who gave us info on the works and urged us to return next year to see the results. Toilets are available, which is nice.
N. I.
Lovely Cathedral, well decorated throughout. Nicely kept and staff always welcoming and respectful. Worth a walk around if you are doing a tourism route as a stop off before a trip to the castle just down the road.
D. S.
Lovely and tourists friendly historic Cathedral Church you shall not miss when you visit Newcastle. The staff is very helpful and informative. This church is very tentative and even provides introductions in both traditional and simplified Chinese. Inside structure and decoration are beautiful, amazing and comparable to the York Cathedral or Glasgow Cathedral. So don’t judge by the size and location. This is a peaceful holy place for you to stay alone with the Lord. No commercials and nobody else will both you. The location is very convenient and can be reached in a short walking distance anywhere in the downtown.
D. S.
This was a beautiful place and I would recommend it. As I entered the choir were practicing and they were enchanting
M. h. M. T.
Lovely place we just sat and enjoyed the peace, very nice.
a. r.
Lovely place very interesting. Wonderful history. Really worth a visit.
J. T.
We visited the cathedral as part of a pre-christmas day in Newcastle. I wanted to visit and pray and light a candle. We were warmly welcomed and as an added blessing there were some family friendly Christmas activities on inside. We took part in the silent disco around the beautiful twinkly Christmas tree.
S. C.
Had my graduation ceremony here and setup was lovely. The Cathedral is beautiful.
D. W.
Cannot say i am really a religious person but i pass this Cathedral many times during the week and try to pop in as often as possible. That fantastic smell when you walk through the door, i cannot describe it.
It is a cool joint for sure.
j. b.
Beautiful cathedral in the heart of the city. Really interesting with fabulous stained glass windows and a memorial to Lord Collingwood ( I was in Collingwood house at school!). Peaceful and friendly with lovely cafe for tea and cakes
M. S.
I was in attendance as a guest of a reader being licensed at a special service. Warm church, warm welcome, comfortable pews andcan excellent sermon by Bishop Mark, but the sound system let down the diocesan bishop (battery ran out on body mike and system turned up too high leading to distortion) and lighting seemed a little dim with dark areas where one would think it would be well lit, eg front of the raised worship area. The organ seemed too loud making young children jump and hold their ears at times. That may seem funny to some but that can be avoided. I enjoyed my visit though and look forward to next time.
B. G.
Just finished the flowers for Easter. The cathedral looks lovely and will smell lovely when the Lillie's open. Lots of other women contributed their own style of Arrangements. Sun is shining in the stained glass windows and all is bright and spring-like.
P. H.
Great cathedral to visit with plenty of history
I. J.
Such a beautiful building , we went for Graduation the surroundings made it really special
M. J.
Truly a welcoming house of God whatever your faith & creed, full of love & compassion led at every level by people who sincerely live His word in compassionate loving acts. Thank you for your love yesterday when my young niece so needed spiritual renewal in her darkest hour.Lovely place to visit.
M. S.
The organ was playing when I visited so I just sat in a pew and relaxed. There is a sense of quietness and peace upon entering. The windows are truly marvellous, so much to see in them. It was good to escape the noise of the outside for a while.
E. L.
Beautiful cathedral, and the ideal setting for my daughters University graduation.
R. S.
Beautiful architecture and stained glass. There are several chapels. Parts of the Cathedral were built in the 1100s. The Cathedral choir was practicing while I was there. Very peaceful.
J. &. W. G.
Interesting architecture and amazing stained glass. Good lunch as well.
W. S.
Landmark of Newcastle, great memories to hero.
w. 1.
Loads of stained glass windows, and Cafe 16 for a reasonable bite to eat..
C.
Gorgeous cathedral. My uncle was a lay preacher here before he became to ill to carry on. He also gave tours and told visitors about the history. Fascinating stuff. Check it out if you're visiting Newcastle and if you live here but never been.....Tsk tsk!
N. B.
Must be visted to be appreciated. Great building and history.
A. S.
Very interesting, there are many beautiful sculptures that adoren the walls that celebrate promonate (and clearly wealthy) citizens of Newcastle and the surrounding area. Quite a culture shock coming from a presbyterian country, I would highly recommend.
It’s FREE but I’m sure they would appreciate a few coins.
L. O. -. K.
Truly a welcoming house of God whatever your faith & creed, full of love & compassion led at every level by people who sincerely live His word in compassionate loving acts. Thank you for your love yesterday when my young niece so needed spiritual renewal in her darkest hour. May God bless you always 🌿🕊

Hello Had A Beautiful Evening Inside This Glorious Cathedral. The Show Was Fabulous As I'm An A Lifelong Osmond Fan Flew Up Thursday Evening To Come See The Show. Beautiful Just Lovely.
C. L.
Pure. Buzzing. Bigged up J.C. Hattie did, loved the old organ
F.
Loved this cathedral a stone's throw from the castle. Excellent interpretation boards brings the history of the town alive too through the lives of those memorialised here. Exceptional 19thC carving of the reredos, choir stalls and font cover (look up - it's suspended!). Lovely atmosphere. They have a contactless donation point - pay up! Don't miss the story of Charles Avison in the delightful courtyard outside - multi-talented and the most important English concerto composers of the 18th century, who knew?!
m. g.
Passed it so many times, amazing building. ..a must see...
C. A.
Went with me ex, lit some candles n stuff, it's lush in it
B. O.
Beautiful cathedral and the only one to St Nicholas in the UK. Contains lovely stained glass windows and hundreds of memorials to eminent locals plus many regimental colours.
I. G.
Magical. ...
The choir was outstanding
Loved the Christmas service
A. K.
So beautiful! Amazing having my son's graduation ceremony there.
M. G.
Brilliant Organ Recital by Ian Roberts today. The pipe organ sounded magnificent from ppp to fff! A veritable tour of its tonal colours. Lovely to hear works by CS Lang for first time. And enjoyed a cuppa and biscuits before and after.
S. G.
Down the road, Durham Cathedral gets all the tourists (and it is indeed fabulous) but Newcastle's Cathedral is well worth the visit. Beautiful and relatively tourist-free. Visit!
N. D.
Pleasant enough, but not especially stunning. With s few minutes explore.
R. r. 1.
St. Nicholas’s cathedral - A small cathedral for a small compact city of Newcastle upon Tyne. A short walk from Newcastle’s Victorian central station and a beautiful old building with its distinctive lantern tower.
Built between 1080 and extended /refurbished up to the year 1500 AD it is the most northerly Church of England (cathedral) in England
W. P.
After refurbishment plenty room to appreciate the cathedral.
S. P.
Odd place ; it was too cluttered to be sacred, clearly a busy church, but tea urns and scaffolding were at odds with the fabric of the building. A shame as it's an approachable space. Also, Christmas tree in February?!
J. M.
Impressive building. Nice to walk around inside. Be careful tho as there is a contactless machine which may well take a fiver off you if your handbag gets too close to it.
D. H.
Always a stunning and spiritual experience
M. T.
There is bigger, but I suspect there are few better places of worship. By the people, St Nic's is for the people: a warm, welcoming place to leave you uplifted. A must for most people visiting Newcastle.
C. H.
I came to st Nicholas's cathedral for the christmas at the cathedral event. My first impressions while waiting to enter the building was it was badly organised. There wasinformation on the doors to direct people to there seats. Lots od confusion from ticket holders as to which doors to go in. No one outside and this waahalf an hour before doors open. In the end everyone was let in atthe same door. I waa later getting some fresh air with my daughter who was singing in the concert. People thought we were ushers. I feel thete should have been ushers at the doors. I rralise its a charitt event but tickets were not cheap and things should be done to a high standard. The fincert itself was very good. Not everything was to my taste. The swing bridge singers lead the carols and backed a number of the preformers, they could not be faulted and they are so good. Jimmy nail was the special guest and did a great renditiin of lirds prayer. It was a most enjoyable evening, it was spoilt somewhat at the end by billy Mitchell telling people to put notes in the buckets on the way out and not loose change. Considering ticket prices were in the region of £22. I felt it was not approriate to ask people to buy a ticket and then contribute later even though it isa very good cause.
S. D.
Stunning church in the heart of Newcastle. Amazing stained glass.
F. W.
In the process of being stripped out - can't wait to see the finished sacred space. You don't need to wait though; visitors are offered views of the whole process through viewing windows...
a. f.
Brilliant architecture, very interesting regarding the history of Newcastle
G. P.
An ancient church which largely survived the Victorian improvements when it became a cathedral. A lot of interesting glass though few windows have any explanations.
S. C.
Old world charm....the choir was nice.
P. D.
The fabulous "open crown of four flying buttresses supporting each other and holding aloft a tall square lantern, itself battlemented and pinnacled, with four miniature flying buttresses balancing a slender octagonal spire, its ribs crocketed".(Pevsner et al Northumberland).
G. Y.
The renovation work is done. Really interesting place to look around and explore.
f.
Beautiful architecture and has helpful and informative displays all around the church so you can do your own self guided tour of the different statues.
p. l.
Peaceful.. Amazing architecture
G. B.
My Grandaughter will be married there on the 16th of August she's marrying into an African family. And St Nicholas has the longest history going back ceturies and family are coming over from Africa too celebrate Its part of our history

It is very interesting to walk around but it is shame that they don't offer more interpretation of the interior. A good guide book would be appreciated (and would earn some money too).

St. Nicholas cathedral was first built in Norman times 11th century.
It is huge cathedral which still retains it's splendid resonance with its Norman built architecture, and retains it's breathtaking importance as Norman cathedral.
