Reviews of St Mary the Virgin Church, Iffley

Very nice and historic church. Lots of architectural features from over the centuries. Very good guide book available to get a full understanding of the different parts of the church. Someone has put a lot of effort into this place and it shows.

My wife and I were married here 49years ago, on this occasion our eldest daughter was also married here on the 11 June. Andrew was the vicar and gave a splendid marriage service and made us all feel relaxed before and during the proceedings, a lovely church with beautiful surroundings.

Extraordinary place! Astonishing Romanesque survival, truly breath-taking. Stunning stained glass but it's the west & south doors which are the real superstars.

Amazing building, really worth having a look. The history is very interesting too.
Modern stainglassed windows compliment the historical architecture.

At the time of my visit in May 2017 the building's exterior was a joyful show of beakheads, fantastic beasts and scenes. I understand it may have since been given a thick coating of a protective substance which will have obscured some of the detail, so not sure my photos will reflect what visitors would now see. The location is scenic with riverside walks close by.

Architecturally very important, which the vicar seems not to realise: the appearance of the world-class west door was spoiled by an unnecessary plastic-laminated sign, for example. The church was open, at least (most Oxford diocese churches seem to be closed for Covid reason at present) and they had a good supply of hand-sanitiser etc.

Cute nice church, great weeding service

I lived in front of this remarkable building for 4 wonderful years at Oxford. Lovely Norman architecture dating from the 1400s. Remember the tolling of the bell on Sunday mornings (and its practice on Wednesday)

Beautiful stone church. Loved the little lamp outside on the right hand side of the path towards the main entrance. Lovely setting in an picturesque English village.

Some of the best Norman architecture to be seen in Oxfordshire, as to be expected it has been added to and altered over the years but not ruined by over enthusiastic Victorians.
