Reviews of St Michael at the North Gate
H. M.
In for a thrill? Contemplation? Historical information? It has it all. A hidden gem of Oxford on its very own high street. Standing tall and proud adjacent church is welcome to all with amazing and beautifully crafted architectural features that leave you smiling. And if that's not enough? Why not test your bravery on the staircase to heaven. A.k.a. The Tower. £3.50 per adult entry and scary heights with rich history. Sad to say we didn't get any photos of the view as we were a little jelly legged! BUT it was an amazing once in a lifetime moment to definitely not be marred by the need to take a photo.

Great little church oldest building in Oxford the Tower is Saxon I believe Wesley preached here statues of St George and St Michael I am guessing and a great stained glass window you can climb the tower for a small fee "my chains fell off ,my eyes could see , I rose went forth and followed thee"

One of the four gates of Oxford this Saxon tower is around a thousand years old and part of what was a church dwellings and a prison. If was part of the wall defense of Oxford. There's a lot of good information to be read. £3.50 and thanks to the Corona I had it all to myself. The views from the top are lovely.

Great place to have a peaceful moment in Oxford City center , with 1000 years of history become one of the main historical places to visit in Oxford, have a entry to the North gate Tower, remain of the antique City Wall.

This is an interesting, small historic church in the centre of Oxford. The Saxon tower, built around 1040, is the oldest building in the city for which there is a fee to climb, currently £3.50 (Adults) £2.00 (Children) with concessionary and family tickets also available. These can be purchased in the small shop. There are some interesting artefacts to see going up the 97 steps and a view of the city from the top.. The church was rebuilt several times during the medieval period and restored in the 19th century. There are a variety of free concerts on most Mondays at 1pm with a retiring collection for a charity nominated by the musicians. As you come out of the church gift shop don't miss the Fairtrade shop on the right down some steps to the basement.

Beautiful medieval church in the heart of Oxford. The admission ia free and it provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy a moment of peace and quiet when walking down High Street.

St Michael's Tower is certainly one of the oldest, if not The oldest structure in Oxford. It is believed to date back to saxton times.
It is part of a lovely old church which is well worth visiting in its own right and there are wonderful views from the top of the tower which make it worth the effort to make the climb to the top.
A. A. J.
Beautiful old church, with a nice, tranquility about it. It is definitely worth a visit.
M. J.
Great views across the city

Wow, seriously old tower in the centre of Oxford. Well worth a visit up to see the view. The church is cute and very well restored.
J. P.
Lovely piece of history in the heart of Oxford. Good views of the city from the top.

Visited in September while on vacation and attended both the Wednesday communion and compline services. Both were lovely - approachable and reverent all at once. The vicar and congregation were very warm - even invited us out to the pub across the street afterwards. If we lived in Oxford, this would be our home church.

The attraction here is the Saxon Tower, the oldest building in Oxford. The price to go in is very reasonable and considering the importance of the site, it was empty on a busy weekday. It was great having the whole tower to myself. At the top, there are great views of the dreaming spires of Oxford. At each level on the way down, there is different display, covering aspects of history, the mechanical works of a clock and some treasures among other things. Great!
D. S.
Although it’s right on the high street, a lot of people favour the university towers to get a view of Oxford. For £3.50 you can climb this tower, get some stunning views, and understand more about the oldest building in the city!
S. O.
A quiet place of worship with the feeling of having been prayed in over many centuries. Interesting stained glass with some many centuries old. Worth a visit. £3 to ascend the tower
J. W.
Fabulous old church with 1000 year old Tower! Great views of Oxford from the top as well! Reasonable price at £9 for a family of 4.
G. P.
Beautiful little old church, with excellent view from the tower.
T. W.
For a paltry entry fee of £3.50, the oldest building in Oxford is a short climb to easily one of the best and most ancient views of Oxford, from a Saxon perspective.
And it's not just a view either — there's more than several information boards to read, church bells to chime, and historical items to view within the tower itself. It's a living space with a story to tell.

Beautiful, peaceful church and tower. Ideal for family with small children. Its manageable. Good piece of Oxfords history. Located Oxfords Oldest Room!

This is a beautiful church. We attend 'Music on Mondays'; concerts at 1:00 pm. World-class musicians and singers, all for a small donation to charity. I also sometimes teach English at the FELLOW classes at the church hall in the evenings, so I have many lovely, happy associations with the place. :-)
D. M.

A wonderful old church - with the highlight of spectacular views across Oxford from the tower, which is worth the trip. You can walk right round the top and get great views of the Radcliffe Camera and more.

First, besides the sights and history, the woman in the little shop was extremely pleasant, gave great advice on where to go, talked with us and was all around wonderful.
The view of the church and off the tower were stunning, beauty everywhere.
M. W.
This is a very atmospheric church in a busy part of Oxford. The people are very friendly and welcoming. We attended choral Mattins today and found that the choir was excellent. I'd recommend it for either a visit or for attending a service.
B. E.
Beautiful city centre church. God gift shop and Tower. Small and peaceful. Pre Covid had lunchtime concerts and often open for prayer. Fairtrade shop in basement of admin building through courtyard.

It is a lovely little tower. We were too late to go on the Carfax tower, it had just closed, but were delighted to find this one, and it was open. You can see an old bell up close and enjoy a view of the town as well as read up on its history. There is also a nice little display of postcards of towers of the world - all sorts of towers.
J.
Pretty nice tower, lots of nice historical things in there. I'm just not good with heights so going up the tower was a bit much for me.
V. T.
See the font used by William Shakespeare to baptise his friend's son, William Davenant, who went on to become himself a writer plus a gun smuggler. Church has a Saxon tower you can climb up plus St Michael slaying a dragon on view
