Well worth a visit. A little time capsule! It helps that the ladies inside were so lovely and welcoming! They answered any questions and offered lots of history about the church itself.
Its hidden in the middle of a street so it's very easy to miss.

Visited to see the Anne Lister plaque and take a look at the boxed pews. They had a lovely local artist in there selling some of their work, my partner bought a carved wooden gargoyle. Such a welcoming place and beautiful inside too. A nice garden area surrounding the church too.

This church is adjacent to the York Minister, look for archway tacked onto the building now an artisan workshop/studio. The east window stained glass dates back to 1470. You will also see a blue plague where Ann Lister took her sacrament with Ann Walker right here in this church.

Hidden gem in York. Lovely church

A very lovely little church - one of the most touching I have ever seen. The interior is fantastic. It is like you enter a place of several decades ago. There is also a bench made of wood with carvings going back to the vikings.
The people there are very friendly and even lit the candles for me during my visit to take more athmospherical pictures.
I can really recommend the place. It belongs to my best memories of York.

Beautiful church, really tranquil. So beautiful by candlelight. The volunteers are knowledgeable and very helpful.

Really worth a detour. This relatively small and plain little church has nice stainglasses and an interesting early gothic architecture including wooden section with benches, closed, a bit boxes like spaces (rare) for the congregation. Warmest welcome from volunteers and people around. They kindly shared their knowledge with us. Thank you .

An old church just to the side of Goodramgate through a small gateway. Go past the Ann Lister Blue Plaque then along a path to the church, enter just to the left of the old bell. Once inside you will see how the Boxed Pews (rented for a year) are arranged after the reformation so that the worshipers did not have to face the altar. To the right is the Chancel Chapel where returning Crusaders would have private masses which were coordinated with the main Mass through the Hagioscope. Also see the Piscina for washing Eucharistic vessels. Well worth a visit to see and listen to the knowledgeable staff. Seen on tv Gentlemen Jack.

One of York's gems. First came here in 1978 for a concert from the Early Music Festival. Beautifully atmospheric by candlelight, this 15th century once church has it all. This time Bootham Baroque played an C18th composer on original instruments. Great music in a perfect venue.

Totally underrated. Very beautiful, small. Just not that fabulous as the minster. But I guess I love it that way, it‘s still a place to feel inner peace.

Charming little church hidden away close to York Minster. A little oasis of quiet amongst the bustling city of York.
It has box pews, a rare thing in churches these days. Well worth a visit.

Unfortunately, due to staff shortages, we couldn't visit the church (August 25th, 2019). As I'm travelling from overseas, the disappointment was palpable for weeks. We could see a glimpse of the church at the gate, but I would have loved to go inside. I hope to go back some day.

The York Viking Market was located here this year, and likely will be next year. A very sweet building, with its painted glass windows, the enclosed pews and aura of times past. Loved it!

Lovely little church situated away from the crowds on Goodramgate. Myself and my partner primarily visited to see the Anne Lister plaque which is on your left as you enter the churchyard, but the church itself is stunning. Very small and quaint but full of character and history. You can also buy a small guide from a volunteer for a small cost.

Set apart from the busyness of York City Centre this beautiful church is an oasis of peace and tranquility. It is also of historic significance to the LGBTI plus community as the place where Anne Lister and Ann Walker took the sacrament symbolising their marriage in the 1830's. It has a lovely garden too. A must when visiting York. I love it.

Tucked away, off a busy street.
Fascinating,a look to the past.
Nice garden to relax in

Very old and untouched by modern architects. This place is a must visit!

I adore this church for me it is the real Jewell of York. It is so beautiful and simple and untouched. Every time I go to York I go to see it and this week I will be there again with friends who have not been.

The church was incredibly beautiful. Drenched in candlelight and the ambience was lovely. Mulled wine and hot chocolate a bonus. The choir was excellent. Only negative was the audience participation as we went expecting it to be a get together sing a long .....apart from this the night was very good.

It took me a while to find this church which is well hidden behind a row of very old shops on busy Goodramgate. Entering it was like stepping back in time. The church has no electricity so is lit by candles and the stone floor is very uneven. Some beautiful stained glass windows that let in some light and unusual box pews. The volunteers who look after it were very welcoming. The churchyard is a lovely place to sit, so tranquil and secluded with the towers of the Minster rising up behind.

Fabulous little church tucked away in central York. I loved the peaceful gardens and calm green space. The church is really interesting - has the partitioned seating which apparently is quite rare. The volunteer was very friendly and knowledgeable.

I was there because of Anne Lister’s wedding. It is tiny and beautiful. However, maybe because I am not white, the members of staff didn’t treat me friendly. It’s a shame because the church looks so amazing and it was where a Christian same-sex wedding took place.
R.
Beautiful church, with wonderful. Voulentiers, willing to answer questions and talk! Hidden Gem overshadowed by the minster!
C. T.
Fantastic place to view. You can feel the history. I’m not a church goer so I didn’t visit for that but was drawn in to see this fantastic authentic old church. Definitely worth a visit. Ring the bell when your there. The sound from it is awesome.
C. B.
Very hard to find. Two entrances; both are brick paths between other buildings. The church is small and not very ornate, but was one of the first churches to officiate a gay wedding.
The garden around the church is popular with locals for lunch.
A. R.
Amazing architecture, and it is has a far more homely feel than the Minster. Also a great place to visit to learn about British LGBT history.
C. B.
A great hidden away church. Boxes pews most unusual, candle light no electricity, stone work still in tact. Very unusual but worth exploring.

If you are a fan of Gentleman Jack or Anne lister this is a must visit.
Lovely little church tucked away (opposite Tesco Express) was bit hard to find but well worth a visit.
Very friendly volunteers to guide you round and full of information.
C. T.
Lovely church to visit and plenty of benches outside to sit on away from the hustle and bustle

It's quite hard to find, but it's a very lovely find when you do! It's a very old church, it's small but has loads of history. Worth a visit if you are in York. Make sure to pick up a flyer by the door as it tells you the bits to look out for.
J. G.
My friend is part of the charitable trust conserving this gem. A beautiful church full of history from 15th Century box pews to Anne Lister (Gentleman Jack) connections
S. W.
Beautiful little church. Free to go in & look around. Benches in the grounds if you want a quiet place to sit.
P. G.
Definitely worth taking the time and trouble to seek this out. This is a beautiful old church, totally hidden from view. You would never chance upon it accidentally unless you're exploring the snickleways.
M. D.
Lovely church rather oddly set out inside worth having a look around just for it's quirkyness very difficult to find especially now the yearly viking market is held here the directions to it really should be a lot better
M. F.
Hidden behind a few shops but an amazing old church with an uneven floor! £2 donation per person is recommended but it's not much and they want the money to keep it going
M. C.
Amazing building in a quiet oasis in York city centre. Could do with a bit of tlc so donate if you visit.
P. M.
Always visit this beautiful church, if you want a piece of history this is the quaintest place in York.

A tiny church tucked away behind other shops on Goodramgate.

Very interesting. They're short of volunteers so not always open.
