Two words. Vast and varied! I urge you to visit as my own words could not do the place justice. Dressing rooms available, attentive and informative staff, who were all, fittingly, dressed in vintage clothing. There are a few interesting private collections there as well which is a nice touch as you can really view the history of the garments.

Coolest shop in Edinburgh imo. The clothes are best picked vintage garments I have ever seen. All seem to smell decent as well which is not usually the case for retro clothing😅 I couldn’t help but notice 1 of the retail assistants being rude to a customer. Want to step back in time and actually buy some of the clothing of the past?! Here's your chance! A large quantity of quality vintage clothing from different eras. With the beautiful decorative (even older) clothing, this shop is definitely a mix of museum and a clothing store. Enjoy!

We just happened to stumble upon this gem of a shop. We were drawn in by the basket of scarves outside the front door. Once inside, there are racks and racks of shirts, jackets, skirts, dresses, kilts, scarves, and even blankets. It was like a treasure trove of goodies. The store is very deep, four different rooms of goods. My sister and I both found clothing that we liked and was in our size! There are fitting rooms to try on whatever you like. The ambiance inside is light and welcoming. Clothes are nearly organized by rack; cardigans, blouses, overcoats, dresses, trousers, skirts, etc. There was always a shopkeeper available for answering questions or getting something from a high rack. The clothes are clean and don't have any strong odors. There was so much variety. And everything is reasonably priced. I got a short sleeved sweater for £6, another two cardigans for £12 each, and a skirt for £14; all lambs wool and high quality. We had to stop ourselves because we still had to find a way to fit it all into our suitcases! There are three locations of this shop in Edinburgh, but this is the main and largest one.

Wide range, really good prices, no refunds or returns is sad since I got some trousers that don't fit (my fault for not trying them on but it wasn't possible to for ages so they should have enabled returns then), you do have to check sizes carefully and most sizes aren't on the labels so it'd be good if they could measure more items and write it on. Staff are lovely!!

Armstrongs is one of those must-see places for anyone with a love for fashion visiting Edinburgh. Have found quite a few treasures here that I am proud to have in my wardrobe, but as usual with vintage stores there is always a bit of luck involved and the selection of stock can be hit and miss. Regardless, a top, unique place and one of my favourites!

Full of fantastic vintage and second hand clothes from dresses to shirts to leather jackets to cowboy boots. Mostly reasonably priced (and so popular with students) you can spend ages riffling the racks. Worth a look just for the fabulous array of clothes used as decoration too.

Best vintage range of shops I've ever visited. So well arranged in all of them too, right down to colour coordination. My wife and I both got sheepskin coats...bring back the 70's!

One of those shops you simply must go inside, even if you're not in the market for secondhand (sorry, vintage) clothing. A veritable Aladdin's cave of fascinating items, the musty 'granny's wardrobe' smell hits you on entry. We just looked (which they seem perfectly happy for you to do) and I could have spent double the time poking around. Prices seem a little on the high side.

This is THE coolest vintage clothing store I've ever been to. Words cannot describe had amazing this place is. It's a must-see on your visit to Edinburgh. It was like a set out of a movie. Nice store to spend time browsing the items and finding wee gems, whether it's for a special occasion or something quirky for the everyday. I used to love this shop - the original and best vintage store. It was the place to go for true vintage finds. However, the quality control has suffered a bit, and with vintage looks becoming more mainstream it's often more cost-effective to buy a reproduction item from, say Zara. Occasionally there's a true gem, but it's usually quite costly.

Clothes are a little stained or grimy, but this is built into the price and there are some fantastic pieces to be found. Staff are friendly and helpful.

This place is so neat! Right on the grass market, you have this vintage clothing shop with loads of cool stuff for guys and gals alike! Bomber jackets, skirts, suspenders, hats, you name it! I was told I had to go there by a friend from Holland, so it made an obviously great impression.

The store is big! It was confusing at first, but I figured all the placements rather quickly in the next 15 mins there. Bought myself 4 very nice pants there and it's definitely a lot more to find :) The whole range of clothes is affordable ranging between £5-£25, I think. I'm not surprised that this store is the most well-known one. And so far, it's my favorite branch of Armstrong!

Armstrong's is a big 2nd hand clothes shop in the Grassmarket - they also have branches across from the university at Bristo square (the rusty zip) and in on South Clark St. They have a huge variety from antique to modern clothes to fancy dress and wigs. Prices seem to have come down in recent years and the quality of the clothes seems to have improved maybe to compete with high quality charity shops in the area. I would recommend a visit.

I am a big vintage fan. But I am not a fan of Armstrongs. The quality on offer is pretty poor- and although you expect vintage items to show signs of having lived a previous life- most items in Armstrongs are stained and ripped, and in a generally poorly maintained, unloved condition. None of which is reflected in their price tags. It saddens me to see the likes of Primark appearing on their rails too. If you do visit, make sure you look up, as hanging from the rafters are some true vintage pieces, likely dating back from Armstrong's days in the rag and bone trade. But unfortunately their faded grandeur is not for sale. You'll find no vintage gems here I'm afraid.

You could lose a happy hour in Armstrongs – trying on hats, rummaging through the silk scarves and falling in love with completely impractical floor length ballgowns. There’s no ‘look but don’t touch’ rules here, the staff are chatty and helpful, and there’s usually some cheerful ditties playing in the background. Best of all perhaps, there’s something transformative about stepping into Armstrongs – as if you could completely reinvent yourself with just a few well-chosen purchases. And perhaps that’s its pull. You can just as easily emerge from their changing rooms, draped in 1930s glamour as you can step out dressed as a ye olde pirate. I often leave Armstrongs empty-handed – but it’s testament to the emporium’s appeal that I return time and again regardless. Armstrongs is one of the few places where the experience of going is as much fun as actually discovering something to take home. And, as seasoned thrifters will agree with me, such a place is a rare find indeed.
