Well what can we say!! Trying to find 2 suits for a wedding has been hard enough!! We only wish we had found this shop a week earlier! Excellent service both from the suit/shirt dept. Then to find the more relaxed offering in 59!! Wowsers this what a gents outfitters should be like. Multiple unexpected purchases later and an enjoyable experience had by 2 of us whom hate the idea of shopping full stop!! Well worth a visit. We will be back!!

Came into the shop today with my partner, looking for something half decent for a wedding (my own). I hate shopping for clothes. The staff couldn't do enough; encouraging me to try things I'd never pick and listening to us when we said we liked certain styles and colours. I probably came into the shop looking for a shirt but left with a full outfit, including a belt. And I didn't feel pressured in the slightest, it was just that the clothes were excellent and everything worked. I don't usually leave reviews but I was so impressed with the patience and care and service shown by the staff - especially Mike, who was enthusiastic and more knowledgeable than 99% of people I've ever encountered in menswear shops - that I was moved to write this. I'll more than likely shop here again. And, hey, if you are the owner reading this: pay rise for Mike.

I am a resident of York but pop into the centre a little less than I used to. Thought I would make the trip in after lockdown two and look around some of the independents. Smarts was great. The range of stock was all quality and teamed up with friendly knowledgeable staff. A rare thing today, Rob the assistant on hand was patient and helpful. Top marks all round.

I visited the store during a day trip to York last week. Very nice clothes, but very mixed customer service. I was approached by a long-haired gentleman (didn't get his name) as I was browsing the shop. He was very helpful and courteous, and explained that I could try on any clothes if I wished; welcome news as I can fit a medium or large, depending on the store. However, when I went to pick out a shirt I was keen on, a colleague of his (bald-headed gentleman) balked at me that I should only try on the shirt if I was intending to buy it; I'm a 34 year old male, I'm not in the habit of trying on clothes which I have no intention to buy. His manner felt overly aggressive and patronising. I felt as though he was trying to talk me out of buying the shirt, which he almost succeeded in doing (I tried it on and bought the shirt in the end, returning to the long-haired gentleman for the sale - excellent customer service from him I must stress). Overall a great store, high quality clothing. I would have awarded 5 stars but the customer service I received left a sour taste - perhaps some additional training is required.

Friendly and knowledgeable service and great quality branded clothing, which becomes harder to find every day. Independent family owned stores are the lifeblood of the disappearing "high street", and we ought to support them, whenever we can. Good website too, for when we can't get to the store.

I always make a bee-line for Robert Smart Menswear when I revisit York. It stocks a great range of mens' clothing from many brands - including non-standard sizes - and I have always found the staff friendly and willing to go the extra mile to look out a brand, size or colour they think might work. It has been a pleasure to shop here - even during the recent lockdown when they took great pains to find what I was looking for over the phone and online.

I live in Leeds, but my first port of call when needing something new to wear is 'Robert Smart' in York. I can usually find what I had in mind to buy when I set off - so it's rarely a wasted journey. I wouldn't have that confidence shopping in Leeds. But what sets this shop apart, is the service and attention given, without any pressure, to help you find exactly what you are looking for.

Smart Country is a classic outdoor and countrywear specialist housed in a Grade II listed building at the centre of Historic York. They are Barbour stockists and are based on Low Petergate, which is a key road that connects York’s two major tourist attractions, The Minster and The Shambles. Enormously popular with Yorkshire’s Rural Community, the shop inevitably also caters for more urban dwellers and foreign visitors wishing to adopt a more rugged timeless look.
