Reviews of The Mock Turtle Tea Shop
H. T.
Today I went to one of the most iconic tea rooms in Brighton, as you can see how pretty are the tea pots and cups!!! 🫖☕️ You must come to this place and experience the traditional English tea blend, scones, AND OMELETTE 🍳!!!! THEY ARE FABULOUS! SUPER SOFT CREAMY🥹 And guess what? They are not expensive!!! Definitely worth to come💕
M. M.
Fantastic tea shop and definitely worth a visit. I ordered a full English and it was obviously cooked to ordered and absolutely delicious. The staff were really friendly and wonderful too. Nothing bad to say about this place at all. I'll definitely be back.
M. P.
An old English tea shop, all cakes are made by proprietor, including some very large doughnuts, with lashings of jam !
I had tea and tuna sandwich, and shared a doughnut with friends. Amazingly friendly people here, well worth more visits when in Brighton.
D. T.
Old style shop with lovely character and friendly and helpful staff. The staff were very attentive yesterday to a customer in a wheelchair, and the staff were talking amongst themselves yesterday after he left saying what a nice man he was.
We live more than 70 miles from Brighton but having been to this Tea Shop before we made sure of another visit whilst staying in the area for a holiday..
The jam doughnuts are probably the biggest and best you will ever taste in the UK, and trust me I have eaten a lot of them over the years !!.. 😋 😜
M. W.
Lovely blend of tea. Sandwiches yummy with plenty of filling and a little salad on the side. Cakes delicious and huge portions. Lovely spot for lunch.
R.
Lovely and cozy old school type of British tea room locates in the central of Brighton. Nice selection of tea and decent food, it does feel like having a cup of tea at granny's house.
T. A. (.
The breakfasts and cakes are delicious. The place is small and very stylish 🤍
D. (.
£5.99 for omelette great food besides being a bargin
S. O.
Simple but welcoming cafe. Cakes are superb, sandwiches filled to overflowing and the beans on toast ere very welcome after a long trip from Athens!

Good prices, nice food! Very cosy place 🫖

Named after the eponymous character in Alice in Wonderland, the Mock Turtle is a quaint tea shop by the seaside in Brighton.
It's cramped and cluttered, the toilet is at the top of a narrow set if stairs. The crockery is white and blue. There's lunch and an assortment of cake and tea. The spot is busy. We saw a tour group of 50 or so foreign students head into the basement for a tea. In short, exactly what you expect of a tea shop.
We had fish and chips and three cream teas. The chips were more like French fries, skinny and a little crunchy. The fish came with peas and a generous helping of tartar sauce. The tea was good. The scones were large and decent.
There is a small patio. The prices are reasonable. The staff were rushed off their feet and unable to check in on us.
A. A.
My husband and I ordered the coffee cake , a latte and Earl grey tea with a side of milk. The cake was so delicious and moist. The drinks were good as well. I'm still craving the coffee cake , it was that good. Highly recommended.
K. M.
This was an amazing find. The scones were like nothing I'd ever had before. Definitely recommend!
L. P.
Soup and bread was on point, service from the mixed raced guy was attentive and rather sexy if you don't mind me saying hehe 😜🔥 the cream tea comes with 2 scones ‼️ so I gave 1 to my fat friend to half the caleries 🤣
R. R.
Good menu choice, service and crockery!
J. A.
Always good, friendly and helpful staff, omelettes are excellent. Authentic atmosphere. Well worth a visit!
S. “. H.
It was the closest one to where we was and by the reviews it scored highly.
We ordered up a couple of meals and a tea (which was tea leaf👍). When my burger came out it looked ok but the burger itself wasn't great and not that hot, the service was nice and polite and it wasn't that dear.
If we come back to sunny Brighton we'll give this one a miss...😐
I. F.
.Found this tea shop quite by chance and was delighted to find that they served loose leaf tea. Their cakes are great and the decor is unique. The staff were very pleasant indeed and provided a high level of customer service. We visited twice during our stay in Brighton and will certainly call in again whenever we are in the area.
S. M.
Amazing food! Good tea, nice atmosphere. The waitress would have been better if she had smiled more, could be a cultural thing, could have been having a bad day, but it didn’t ruin how wonderful the food was.
G. D.
Best place to have tea. The place is very traditional and characteristic. The menù for the tea is tasty and plentiful. I have been here only one time with my friends and my impression was very positive.
K. Y.
Tea shop that bakes their own scones and other goods. The shop has plenty of seats, considering there are seats in the basement and I believe upstairs. I ordered the cream tea (£7), which came with a pot of tea of your choice, and 2 scones (white, fruit, wheat?). The scones were very large and filling.
Cute and cozy decor with many china plates and pots. Minimum charge for card is £5.
M. B.
One of the best coffees i've had in brighton asked for it not to hot and it came just the way i like it and the food was really good to well done to the girl who made the coffee will definitly come again all staff where very friendly and polite
A. W.
Cute, kitchy kind of place. Food was nice, especially the leaf tea! Servive very friendly and efficient. Would recommend for a quick bite and a drink when you're all shopped out!
M. B.
Very close to the national express bus stop, hidden up a tiny connecting street is a tiny gem of a tea house.
Inside the shop is very small... Not good if you're in a wheelchair or really big. However most of the seating is outside. In fact for this review I did not go inside the shop, just enjoyed the high tea and ambience with a friend. Seating yourself outside, the mock turtle has some very efficient staff. They gave us time to look over the menu before coming over.
I had the cream tea. Here it is a lot cheaper than many other places. It comes old fashioned loose leaf tea with a strainer. This is a great touch as it just feels very nostalgic. The crockery is all mismatched which just reminded me of my grans high tea.
The cakes are all homemade. There is a bakery up above the tea house. They make Their own jams as well.
It is a fantastic place to go when it is good enough to sit outside. Maybe a bit cramped if you have to sit inside. Great value old fashioned cream tea. Proper homemade cakes.
R. R.
My favourite place in Brighton. Awesome tea shop... traditional teas and homemade cakes served. As well as good old fish n chips! I love the Mock Turtle.
J. B.
Always great food and friendly service in a relaxed setting.
C. F.
It is good price with good quality scone and english tea. We were so happy we went in . The cream is amazing with the scone. The scone i have is a plain one , it is warm and mist inside. I will come back definitely
s. b.
Very nicely set up. I probably ordered the wrong thing for the setting, but my ice-cream sundae felt quite cheap, asda square carton style ice cream. The cakes that the rest of the group looked nice, which is probably what the cafe focuses on more.
V. Z.
Lovely quaint cafe/restaurant! Delicious tea cakes!
A. H.
seriously good pot of tea. lap sang and earl grey in same pot and anchovy toast. this was banging! loved the decor. would return and do the same again.
K.
Average food, not a great service: they accidentally spilled lots of milk over the scarf of my friend (I understand, things happen), but they haven’t even tried to make up for this, just a quick “sorry”. No discounts or “your food on us”
C. P.
This is such a lovely little cafe, the menu has so much to offer and it is all amazing!
S. B.
Incredibly amazing tea restaurant❤️
Its very posh (exactly positive meaning)
Staff is also friendly enough😊
If you visit brighton, you have to come here mock&turtle and enjoy your afternoon tea🙌🏻
T. T.
Lovely and quirky tea room food outstanding and served hot staff fantastic. Great range of food and drinks on menu
K. “. B.
Totally delightful; fabulous quirky decor, yummy, irresistible cakes and really lovely staff. Oh, and that old cash register/till, a great period touch.
K. J.
Kind and professional staff! Loved the place.
R. C.
This is a great little find. It has a lovely cosy feel and great service. All the food we had was very well cooked and lovely. The scones were as someone else posted huge! And my daughter says the carrot cake was the best she has ever had. They also do proper loose leaf tea and a very good espresso. Well worth a visit.
J. A.
Found this little tea shop walking through the town and I must say it's quite good in there. At first glance it seems normal but when you step in they are quite unique.
Its gets busy in there so best get there early.
They do have s variety of teas I must say and price was really cheap. They even bring you extra water for your tea pot so you get your monies worth.
Great place for afternoon tea to relax. They even serve cakes and food.
Only disappointing part was the area I was smelt of raw eggs and I was not pleasant however it's a good place to visit.
S. G.
Food was good, when it eventually arrived! Need some staff training!
R. E.
Scones and cakes were incredible not to mention the tea-amazing!
All the staff were very kind and the store was so cute, pretty and clean.
We had two pots of tea, two large scones and two cakes-yet the price was so cheap compared to what they provide. I regret not tipping more.
B. H.
This place is a hidden gem that hasn't changed in 30 years! I recommend the cream tea with scones the size of your head, or the cinnamon toast for a lighter bite.
A. m. M.
When ever we visit Brighton we always come here for breakfast, quality of food is fantastic with a huge choice of cakes, teas and snacks.
The full English breakfast was great and made with good quality ingredients.
The place is small but also has outside seating, staff were friendly and service quick.
M. H.
Good food and great location. Only spoilet by slow service.
H. B. (.
They serve a fine breakfast as well as lots of lovely looking cakes. I had beans on toast with poached egg, a good start to the day. My husband went for Welsh rarebit. The tea is loose leaf, in a teapot with strainer. Lovely.
T. C.
Staff were really friendly, but I am sorry you can't serve cream tea with whipped cream, it just doesn't work. Especially when the pictures in the window show clotted cream. A shame because the place looks lovely and the other cakes were great.
k.
Sweet tea shop and the history of the tea shop(one of the oldest in brighton and owned by generations of the family) is very nice! However it's a shame you just look onto a stone wall from the café and the interior itsself could be a bit more dusted and made fit for customers, even if the old antique tea shop is authentic. Also I went here for scones and they were okay, but most importantly they were not scones.. Just very dry nearly stale bread with butter jamd and cream.. Shame but still would come again for a cuppa.. No more though
G. B.
Excellent cafe for food, recomend a visit
M. K.
Lovely cosy tearoom near seafront. Ppl friendly and kind. Amazing akes made in house 😋
L.
Lovely staff, great scones, amazing atmosphere and interior. Can wholeheartedly recommend. Only negative thing I can think of is that the scones are too big and lush. My belly was aching 😊 (also excuse the crappy phone camera, doesn't really capture the interior. )
A. S. W.
Great tea house!!! scons are huge!!! everything very tasty!!! dont miss
t. q.
Very nice little Tea shop cake's are excellent. Staff seem very friendly and helpful.
f. c.
Tea room/ caff. It's alright, not amazing.
The side salad with the toasted sandwich you couldn't really call it a side salad. Was worth a visit, even though the rock cake was dry too.
Lots of cakes to choose from, kept under cling film to keep fresh but not very fresh as too much quantity to sell to be totally fresh each day. I guess it takes a number of days to sell them all before fresh new ones are made.
Old style place but would benefit from being updated as a little too greasy spoon for me.
T. A.
My favourite tea shop for years now, literally one of the best pots of tea you will likely ever have.
Wonderful scones and donuts the size of your head. All home made too.
R. G.
A little bit of tradition in a sea side cafe. Cream teas near the pier just what we needed.
D. M.
A long established venue offering a marvellous array of teas and cakes in a quintessential English tea room setting. The building is very old so access might be difficult but not necessarily impossible. The staff are helpful.
m.
This is a proper little tea shop! Really good tea and coffee, and the most amazing cakes being baked on the premises. We enjoyed our morning coffee so much we went back for afternoon tea. 🙂
N.
Great little cafe in brighton, you wouldn’t believe how busy it is for the size. The scones are amazing some of the best in Brighton. Reasonable priced great selection
R. G.
Love this little place! I always visit whenever I'm in Brighton. Lovely cakes, staff are brilliant & the atmosphere is great. Perfect place to grab lunch :)
R. G.
Unless you are a Japanese tourist, this is Brighton's best kept secret. Quirky boutique café that serves proper teas. Some locally sourced ingredients. For a proper treat go for a coffee meringue with coffee cream inside. Warning! Not for dieters.
S. C.
Traditional English tea place with a selection of three scones available to chose as well as several cakes. This is the second time we come so I would recommend clearly. :)
G. K.
They do a lovely bit of Buck rarebit (Welsh rarebit with a poached egg).
N. W.
It used to be better but I still like it haha
E. H.
We got huge and good scones today.
J. C.
Cream tea and cakes. A warm relaxing setting nothing else needed. Coffee of teas available and homemade scones. Do visit if you're nearby, I will visit again next time!
I. W.
A great place for a pot of loose leaf tea and a generous serving of cake. We liked it so much that we went back the same day for more cake.

J. F.
Can always find room for one their massive Doughnuts!
J. R.
Please stock "Oatly Barista', Soya milk is so 2 years ago. This place was a pleasant surprise, like something out of Alice n Wonderland you could host a great mad hatters tea party there for kids or big kids, if they let you, better check, maybe it was the decent sized donoughts n cakes I saw in the window, lots of elderly locals use this place, and families.
M. M.
Lovely food good service
P. S.
Lovely service, and great selection of tea and coffee. We also ate well but sadly we had no "room" for cakes!
E. H.
Small but homely. This is what a traditional tea shop should be. Lovely staff and the scones were yummy!
J. L.
Great place to get an afternoon tea, often more popular with tourists during the summer months but definitely worth a visit for their cream tea.
M. T.
Love the cream tea and scone.
M. H.
Nice cream tea and had an old, vintage feel free to it, if that's your thing. They didn't use clotted cream for the cream tea though, just whipped cream.
I. V. P.
Lovely and cozy . Delicious cakes to accompany a wonderful cup of earl grey tea . Extremely friendly staff and quick service.
G. Z.

(Translated) I visited in July of 19, and I ordered cream tea at that time, and I thought the cream tea was Viennese coffee, but it was milk tea! The size of the scones were very large and the taste was very soft (?), but it was a crumbly dough! And here's buttercream? And butter and strawberry jam. Personally, buttercream was the best! I was very satisfied~~

Cream tea is good overall, but I personally felt that it was not a clotted cream instead of butter.

분위기 좋고 따스합니다.
크림티 전반적으로 좋지만 개인적으론 버터 대신 클로티드크림이 아닌게 아쉬웠습니다.
버터는 수제여서 맛있습니다!

(Translated) Good place for tea break. If you like bread, you can always come by. Service is good. I know that this is a famous sponge bread, but I know my friend England.
