Reviews of Small Talk Tearooms and Gifts Colchester

Lovely tea place.
People were nice and the food was as expected! Sakura tea had a full flavor and the scent kept so long. Darjeeling was nice as well.
They have a cream tea and the presentation was so cute! Scone and clotted cream was very delicious. Clotted cream was so thick and creamy and scone was soft!
A. K.
Just had a fantastic afternoon tea. The staff are really friendly and can't do enough for you. They did a special tea for me, being a diabetic there is normally too many sweet treats. They changed it to replace some of the cakes with a mini ploughman's it was great 👍

My partner and I visited for lunch on Good Friday and had a fantastic meal. The decor and vibe of the tearoom is amazing and the staff were welcoming and helpful. If you're looking for an old school tearoom, great teas, and a nice cream tea which is also great value for money, look no further!

Amazing here, come a few times. It’s always very yummy! Great prices
Clean and tidy. Friendly and helpful staff.
Beautiful decorations.

Visited on a Saturday morning with a couple of friends. The staff was very attentive and friendly, the food came quickly, and the flavoured tea was delicious. A nice relaxing atmosphere and the decor takes you back in time.

A wonderful accidental find. It was my first time in Colchester and I had to find somewhere to wait while a family member had an appointment and tucked away down the lanes was this darling gem. I love a tea room and Small Talk Tearooms didn't disappoint. Lovely selection of modestly price light bites, sandwiches and lunches are available and what looked like a lovely afternoon tea was being had on the table next to me. The tearoomes decor is very nostalgic of my Grandma's home which has a lot of fond memories for me. I loved looking around while I ate at all the old furniture and small trinkets and Nik naks. The food was lovely, the staff were all very welcoming and helpful when I realised I was lost and couldn't get back to my family member! I highly recomend you go visit if you are in the area.
Practical info. This tea room has no parking, there is plenty of different sized tables from 2-6 person tables, children are welcomed and high chairs are available but I do not know if there are bottle warming facilities but there is no children's menu.

Cute little vintage tea room, with lovely, friendly staff.... and the most amazing cream teas! I swear that teapot was bottomless....
The portions were very generous and even my sconeaholic other half couldn't quite manage to finish his! Definitely worth a visit 😊

We ended up trying this tea room after not being able to get into one of the 'chain' restaurants, and I'm so glad the other place was full!
What a delightful find. Beautifully decorated, friendly staff and delicious food. I love the baguette melts, particularly the Cumberland sausage one. We've been here several times now. Any visit to Colchester now involves a trip to Small Talk as far as we're concerned.
At busy times you may have to queue for a short while, but the wait is worth it.

I really wish you notice that this amount of jam and butter is really not enough for two scones... The taste of the scones though - amazing.
M. B.
A beautiful tea room with a wide selection of hot drinks and food. Lovely atmosphere and feels as though the place has been taken out of a movie. Would definitely recommend if you are near by.

The place looks lovely, with a great selection of breakfast dishes and drinks. I had the smoked salmon with avocado and poached eggs on a toasted bagel, and a latte, all was great. Friendly service and really good price. Would love to go again
M. D. J.
Afternoon Tea, delicious selection of sandwiches and cakes. Friendly staff, great value for money.

My son & I visited on Saturday for an Afternoon Tea as a birthday treat. The waitresses were very welcoming & friendly. Food was delicious and very fresh, with a great selection of sandwiches & cakes. Good atmosphere, a fantastic afternoon out!

Have passed this tea room loads of times but after a busy week succumbed to go in and have a Full English and pot of tea..the staff were very attentive and sat me at a table quickly..the tea came within minutes and I was enjoying a cup when my breakfast came..it looked delicious..was very filling..I especially loved the Cumberland sausages...the pot of tea seemed to keep going!!! The atmosphere was relaxed and a much needed rest for me..I will definitely visit again..the place is well worth a visit..
Well done to all the lovely servers..
and cook for such a fantastic experience..

Found this charming ‘ye olde worlde’ tearoom that looked like it had travelled back in time while exploring Colchester. It was a full on experience of antique furniture, nick nacks everywhere and Lacey tablecloths. A busy space that surprisingly works by selling the dream of posh afternoon tea with granny. Excellent choices on menu, my mackerel salad was thoughtfully put together; with a complementary mixture of tastes, smoked fish with a boiled egg and creamy potato salad, peppery watercress salad, chunky Wholemeal bread and flavourful horseradish cream on the side, that made it all very very tasty. The tea selection was outstanding. Staff were very pleasant. Price was super affordable. I followed this with a slice of carrot cake that had a lovely creamy cream cheese frosting, (I’d have liked to see some raisins in the cake for texture, but it still
was lovely)
I will certainly go back and recommend a visit if you’re passing.

We stumbled across this very pleasant and lovely atmosphere tea room.
Had a lovely corn beef toastie with a special fruit tea recommend 1001 tea.
Very clean place and very pleasant staff.
Thank you.
Don't miss this little treasure.
K. S.
Very nice Rose garden (black tea) and the classic egg Benedict (with ham) made to perfection. Nice environment and friendly staff.
S. W.
Lovely tea room, pretty decor and surroundings, charming. Lunch was very tasty. I loved the choice of music playing too!
S. H.
Very friendly location, lovely selection of homemade cakes, nice simple menu with something for everyone. I would say average prices for this type of venue but worth it.
There is plenty of seating in a traditional setting, with vintage touches making it feel very cosy.
We have been several times now and would thoroughly recommend it.
Word of warning though Saturday between 12.30 and 2pm can get extremely busy.
K. J.
Hosted a baby shower here, the staff were so lovely and helpful, the afternoon tea was absolutely amazing, would definitely go back again!
A. y.
Had lunch and was lovely. The tearoom was a lovely place exactly what your looking for if your after the high tea
B. E.
Such a quaint, pretty tea room. The atmosphere was very relaxed, the services was excellent and the cream tea was yummy. I want to know how they made their scones so light and big 😊😋 I will definitely be returning.
D. W.
Thanks for the breakfast, the service
Food was great, served with a smile
Our waitress paid attention to what the kids would prefer
R. W.
I am SO glad that me and my mum went here for afternoon tea, we always try to find new places to try and this has been my favourite so far!!! The setting, staff and food were all incredible. I will 100% be returning here in the furture to enjoy more delicious food 😋
N. H.
Had what was supposed to be a light lunch and ended up having the most amazing meal! As a lover of scones and clotted cream these were fresh, crumbly, moreish and warm!!! Honestly so damn tasty and the other half still goes on about his turkey and brie panini he had which again was delish and a very generous portion. Would definitely recommend anyone to go and have a spot of tea and cake/scone and didn't realize but they have a sister tearooms in Chelmsford which is also pretty nice but this one is still my favourite.
B. D.
A hidden gem in the town of Colchester, much bigger on thr inside than it first appears. Great prices with a great service. Wonderful food and a fantastic choice of different teas. The decor is truly vintage, my new favourite tea shop!
S. M.
Decided to have lunch with a friend and the lunch was very delicious. The homemade cakes were even more delightful to look at and deciding what one to go for was hard to choose straight away but we couldn't say no. Delicious for sure and lovely people working in this oldie worldie tearoom with lots of antiques to look at and old memories playing on the radio.
J. T.
Lovely tea room in the heart of Colchester. Made to feel welcome, friendly staff and high quality service. Food was delicious. Thoroughly recommended.
N. J.
Lovely tea rooms. We had booked afternoon tea, all served beautifully, very tasty, great service. Perfect.
Y. 1.
Lovely days gone by atmosphere! Food and drinks were all absolutely perfect and the service was friendly, professional and at just the right pace. This was our first visit and it most definitely will not be the last! I have already recommended to friends and family too. Portions larger than expected, making it even better value and the quality is top class. You will not be disappointed with a visit here!
G. M.
An excellent and traditional style cafe. Traditional in style but with current high standards of service and menus. Well worth a visif when shopping in the heart of Colchester or visiting the historic town.
M.
Really friendly place. Beautiful decor inside. Fantastic selection of teas and tea blends. My wife loved her Eggs Florentine, and I enjoyed a vegetarian full English breakfast. The cakes are worth it too.
A. C.
Good and bad points; lovely tea room, spacious, and clean with a pleasant atmosphere. Staff very friendly, helpful and polite. Reasonably priced. Had to wait too long to be acknowledged and seated, it wasn’t busy but had to wait for ages to be shown to a table. The staff looked at us numerous times but didn’t acknowledge us. Cheese toastie had far too much cheese in, the crisps and side salad were lovely however. The jacket potato with cheese and beans was bland, the skin wasn’t crisp or anything like it should be, cheese was the pre-grated packet cheese which is awful, the salad was nice and fresh and a generous size. The apple juice was from a carton and was overpriced, the Rose lemonade was lovely. The chocolate fudge cake wasn’t great as it was the one made for heating up in the microwave. The sponge was a bit dry and not great flavour and the fudge icing was like glue. The Victoria sponge was a good size but very dry. Had to wait too long for plates to be removed and to order the cakes. Overall we enjoyed the tea room itself, staff were friendly but not attentive enough which meant too much waiting. Clean. Food was disappointing.
s. l.
Friendly staff, lovely choice of food and drinks and very very good prices. All set in lovely surrondings.

Just been to the Colchester Small Talk Tearoom and without doubt this is a really cosy , back in the day beautiful cafe. The layout of dining is perfect and gives you that special feeling of having your own eating experience. The menu of choice is such that you would like to try everything! I opted for the fisherman's lunch and I was so pleased iit was perfect. I will be back for sure ..
p. n.
Good grub in a genteel surroundings. Reasonable prices.
S. A.
Absolutely lovely little tearoom, so glad we stopped in for lunch.
There is a great selection of food and so many teas to choose from.
The décor is wonderfully kitsch, and being located so close to everything this is a definite revisit.
P. S.
Spontaneous lunch in town. The cafe was busy but had space. Greeted by a very pleasant member of staff.
Order was taken after a short wait as the staff were getting food to other tables.
Food arrived not long after our order was taken. The food was very good. the staff kept apologising for the delay when there wasn’t one really.
In the time I was there it was as busy time for the staff. I can not fault them.
The food was fantastic, most definitely worth a visit for a nice lunch.
B. A. (.
A great place to eat very friendly staff from the moment you walk in and are seated at your table.
Very quick to take you order and food and drinks arrived quickly and was hot .
G. P.
Lovely food and a good price
B. L.
Lovely friendly staff, absolutely beautiful and quaint decor and excellent value for money! The fry up was fantastic with great quality bacon and sausage, great selection of tea and coffee and the scones were delicious! Would highly recommend!
R. K.

H. V.
Lovely English tearoom.
N. V.
Excellent food and wonderful, polite friendly staff. Will definately return.
M. B.
The lady was on her own today and she was amazing. It got quite busy and she was really patient with our two 4 year old's. I noticed she handled everyone in the tea room really well with the service.(you just had to be patient). We had a mixture of dietary requirements and there was something for everyone and it was all delicious.
T. W.
Staff amazing especially Isobella! Managed very well. Food is always on point compliments to the kitchen! Lovely atmosphere our favourite cafe in colchester
L. B.
Brilliant service, food was great.
I had eggs benedict
Portion size was more than enough great value and great timing.
Overall great atmosphere.
Although where I sat the sun was shining directly in my face.
Will definitely be coming here again
A. B.
Lovely and quaint. Quiet and calming atmosphere although it was a little busy. My son took me in for a belated Mother’s Day treat. Really enjoyed my treat. We just had the cream tea with scones, clotted cream and jam. Beautiful.!
The waitress was very friendly and welcoming, the service was quick a efficient.
Definitely come back. Antonia x
B. D.
Had a lovely breakfast here! They are very accommodating, and you can basically make up your own if it's not exactly how you'd like on the menu. Drinks were good. Service prompt. The only reason I have given a 4 star and not 5, is because the toast that came with the breakfast was stone cold and chewy.
C. E.
Excellent service and the afternoon tea was very good and well presented . The cost was good compared to other venues I have been to.
P. H.
Helpful staff, nice atmosphere, pretty surroundings, quick service, lovely food. The cream teas are lovely. It's what I call a proper tea rooms. Would recommend for a nice lunch and chat with a pot of real tea. The price is also very reasonable.
M. O.
Recently moved here but I can definitely say this is my favorite place in town to get food. Every meal I've had has been sensational and so tasty. Love all the choices of tea and the staff are very friendly! The atmosphere is so cozy and inviting. Will never get tired of this place and their wonderful selection of foods!
M. G.
What a great place, great food, lovely cakes especial the dark chocolate cake looks sticky but it is a light has a feather a must try. And the team where friendly too. It got old world charm with antique furniture, cups and plates. Go on give it a try.
J. B.
Lovely food as always. Afternoon tea superb. The staff are always smiling and so helpful..ty
C. A.
Not our cup of tea. Felt like a hotel restaurant. For an older clientele and the menus was disappointed. Didn't end up eating in here as we couldn't find anything we fancied
J. W.
We had afternoon tea there it was lovely, reasonably priced and tasty. Friendly staff and good service. Defo will be back!
Y. B.
Very nice in here, welcoming. Keeping up with the rules & regulations to do with the pandemic. Staff were really nice too. Been a few times with my grand-daughter defintely will go back...
S. M.
Been here on many occasions, had a baby shower afternoon tea and it was amazing. Well catered for and the staff are lovely and work very hard to cater for all needs. The sandwiches were delicious. Thanks again
F. O.
This is an excellently decorated place, very 'in' just now with old eclectic furniture, including lovely wooden chest, I've been here about 4 or 5 times now and every chair is comfortable. They sell fruit teas (and others, green and black and such like) they also sell their fruit tea blends, to take home too, which are excellent! And they make beautiful scrambled eggs! Which can be ordered without the bread - indeed they very kindly cooked some tomatoes to go with it. Delicious!
An excellent place, lovely people, great atmosphere, and NO beastly music! Very relaxing - a 'real' place.
T. B.
Lovely tea room, fantastic staff and wow the lunch menu was amazing. We stopped here for a pot of tea and a mocha, decided to have a bite to eat, was not disappointed! The lemon meringue is to die for. Staff are lovely too will be coming back soon!
N. H.
One of my favourite teashops in town. Has a feel of grandma's sitting room - drinking tea from her best china. This grandma is also a fantastic cake baker and the savoury snacks aren't bad either. Definitely worth a visit.
G. B.
Bustling yet not noisy, this quaint venue is well presented with good customer service. The food is good, not as tasty as I had hoped with a few of the luxuries skimped, not enough butter for the toast, not enough dressing/condiments for the salad. I’d still return though.
C. W.
My favourite little tea shop. They have such a wide selection of very flavorful teas, beautiful decor and ambiance, and the cakes are always so delicious and moist. It's lovely to come here with a friend, put all electronics away, and step out of your day for an hour or two and just relax over a lovely pot of tea. Or, if you're alone, step inside and simply sit, enjoying the feel of the place while you enjoy your tea, soaking it all up and relaxing.
j. t.
Such a wonderful place. The wife and I just happened to be passing and stopped in for a quick cuppa. Decor is amazing felt like we had gone back to our grandparents, with a lovely warm feel, accompanied by quant tea pots and cosies. Food was amazing, quality was great. Quantity was perfect. And staff where exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Will be returning Everytime we visit the town :)
C. K.
My daughter and I had a snack, I had cheese on toast I really enjoyed it I will be returning. I loved the look of the café with the old fashioned furniture it reminded me of when I was younger
C. G.
Lovely, "old timey" 30's style tea rooms. It's like sitting in your Granny's living room. Staff were friendly, polite and attentive. Food reasonably priced, and very tasty. The selection of teas and coffees is extensive. Highly recommended.
R. C.
An old fashioned type tearoom. Good coffee, friendly helpful staff and tasty cheese scones. My wife had told me of this place, but it was my first visit. I have a feeling that we may become regular visitors.
M. W.
Food was lovely and arrived very quickly, and there's a good selection of options plus an extensive tea menu. Café is nicely laid out and decorated.
Only thing that let it down was being hounded by the waitress who asked 4 times to take our order within about 10 minutes of us entering the building, even though we were very obviously still reading the menu. I also heard her barking "Are you ready to order yet?!" at another table! There were at least 2/3 empty tables so I don't know why there was such a rush! I felt very pressured and like I'd annoyed the waitress by coming into the café in the first place!
If the staff adjust their approach this will be a lovely place for a quick lunch.
J. C.
Great coffee, great service. Wonderful cheese & ham toasties!
L. W.
Lovely food, often go here for a tasty home cooked lunch. The menu is a limited but they often have specials in a board. Good for baked pots sandwiches and Quiche.
J. D.
Does the best ploughman's ever!
K. P.
This is my absolutely favourite new place. I can’t explain peace and calm you feel surrounded by amazing decor and choice of background music. Totally delicious menu choices and I am already thinking about what to have next time. With such lovely friendly staff and great prices I think my next visit will be very soon.
C. I.
I love coming here, it is so relaxed and very friendly. The menu has a fabulous selection (the Welsh rarebit is my favourite) and some great tasting teas. Highly recommended.
d. m.
Friendly staff, lovey atmosphere, classic decor with a hint of modern. Wide range of teas to try out, and the food was delicious.
I went on a Friday at lunchtime and the place was packed, had to wait 10 minutes for a table, but it was well worth it.
M. C.

Beautiful small old fashioned tea room with great meals.

I was visiting Colchester with an American friend and wanted to show him a traditional English tea room. These are hard to find nowadays. But Small Talk fits the bill! It has a good range of tea and cakes, stylish vintage decor that looks as if it has been there a century (it hasn't, it's a relatively new business). The service was efficient and polite and the prices were reasonable too.
A. C.
Stopped for breakfast in this delightful place. Delicious full English. Will visit again. Highly recommended

Some of the best teas i have ever tasted as someone who does not normally drink different teas (for the childish of us 1001 nights tastes like a chewy drumstick lolly) and good food, sometimes a bit busy but worth it

Обстановката на чайната те пренася в онова аристократично кокетно време на красиви рокли, шапки, ръкавици и джентълмени в изискани костюми а храната е невероятно вкусна с много усмихнат персонал 🥰 Thank you very much XXX
