Reviews of BEAR - Iron Gate, Derby

Nice little place to sit. The breakfast was quite nice. Different flavours. However i do think it was a little overpriced for what it was and I do spend the extra pounds on food normally. I liked the waffle idea so have made it many times at home. I think i would come back again however there wasnt much vegetarian option as I'd hope.

Over the past two days we have visited here twice for food & drinks.
On Friday we visited for there signature pancakes, have fruit x10 stack & bacon with maple syrup x10 stack. There was that much we had to take some home. The only criticism I would say is that unfortunately they were out of packet, & not cooked from scratch.
On Saturday evening we visited again, but this time as a table of 7, for my birthday. This time round I went for the La Fondue Burger with standard House Seasoned Fries. Presentation & taste was spot on, however the burger was over cooked for my liking. All other guests gave good feedback.
On a different note, the cocktail menu has good selection to chose from, my personal favourite being the espresso martini.

Had a really good experience here, would have been five star but unfortunately they forgot my cappuccino! I definitely recommend coming here, the brunch is amazing!

Went to BEAR Iron Gate recently for drinks. Great choice of cocktails on the menu and service excellent as always. Would recommend booking a table as it can get busy.

I went for a coffee and cake, they were beautifully crafted and tasted excellent. I could of had another slice of the cake, it was so good! Nice location and decent decor, easily one of the best coffee shops in Derby!

A huge HUGE thank you to the team at BEAR for being so accommodating at our breakfast yesterday. We had roughly 28 people in our party.
The staff was really helpful and friendly, and made sure that all our food came out at the same time, whilst serving walk in customers! (Mind blown)
And of course the food and coffee was delicious too! We used to visit quite a lot before our move and it has made us really miss going. We will certainly be coming back for more events.
Thank you again!

Very stylish, and a good menu. My wife enjoyed her mocha and granola. Unfortunately my poached eggs on sourdough was not good. Luke warm eggs that had been poached in vinegar and just one thin slice of toast did not feel like good value for money
K. L.
Loved the v60 hand brew and delicious breakfasts! The shakshuka was a spicy delight! great Christmas atmosphere

I used to love Bear cafe. Staff are always great, the food is delicious and the prices are fair which made it a nicer alternative to a lot of places in Derby.
However, they’ve changed the menu which for me is really disappointing and has put me off returning.
Some of the bad changes are; now not including fries with the angry Mac but keeping it at the same price!
No option to buy fries, but instead overpriced tater tots.
The pizza menu is bizarre- no pepperoni or chicken choices AND they’ve definitely reduced in size.
The food is always great but being told the changes are because of BREXIT is such a ridiculous overused reason for businesses to excuse unnecessary price increases or menu changes.
Sort it out Bear because we do still love you!

The decor is minimalist with a trendy vibe. The food is very good, the accent being more on quality than quantity (if you want that the other way around there are two Wetherspoons across the road, don't get me wrong, once in a while I like a Wetherspoons),and the drinks are priced at what you would pay in an upscale bar / restaurant. The staff genuinely seem to enjoy their work, no bad thing. The beer selection is limited but they do wine, craft beers and cocktails. Worth trying out. M

Thoroughly enjoyed going to BEAR today. Cosy but laid back atmosphere with really nice staff who are very attentive. There is table service also.
The menu is quite large and you can add many items to your meal which is nice. Vegetarian and Vegan options available. The coffee is very nice as was the food and will definitely be heading back soon!
I saw an extremely kind gesture from one of the staff where an old woman said that the cake she had just eaten was very nice, it was her birthday so the staff member went and got her another slice to take home. It's the little things that I found make this restaurant nice.
Also they have pretty cool latte art ;)

Coffee very nice. But I did wonder if the batista had gone out to pick, roast and grind the beans....it took an age but not a busy cafe
R. C.
The coffee is amazing, definitely one of the bests in the town,
The burgers give tough competition to Annie's, I loved the Shasukha from the menu.. very filling , tasty.
The place was great and good for a brunch..

Lovely place. We did a coffee tasting experience. It was excellent. Fully recommend it with a group of friends. Louise taught us about the origins of the coffee, process, tastes, aromas and smells. We tasted 4 different coffees and has some samples of chocolate, nuts and fruit on the table. It is an excellent service.
Afterwards we had brunch and drinks.
The bar is clean, friendly and has a warm atmosphere.
If you are looking for a cool place to hang out for coffee, meet friend, host a meeting or eat out I would strongly recommend this place.
Parking at chapel street car park or st.michaels church would be your nearest and best option
walking straight into derby city centre after is also convenient.

Finally something other than the bog standard multi national coffee blands for Derby.
Popped in for a coffee and a croissant in the way to work, now working out how to make time to come back and stay for a full breakfast.
m. c.
Bold claim on website to boast about having the best coffee in town but it did not disappoint. Staff very knowledgeable, beans high quality and alot put into the equipment - the filtration system under the very expensive espresso machine is not something you see in too many places.
Food well priced and good quality.
On an overnight stay in the city I visited both days.
C. A.
Nice atmosphere and the food is good.
E. B.
Delicious!
Due to a misunderstanding between the kitchen and the counter staff, my French toast with bacon and maple syrup ended up being a millionaires shortbread French toast. Absolutely gorgeous, albeit not what I was expecting! As my friend already had their brunch, the team gave us a free tea each rather than replace the meal.
Definitely on my list to return to if I'm back in Derby.

Nice bar. Nice bear. Friendly staff. Cashless. Deserves to be busier. I guess money is tight for everyone these days

Fantastic place, both my wife and I (and now our newborn) have been multiple times over the last few weeks.
My wife is addicted to their granola and I like mixing it up with their smashed avocado on toast, eggs bennies or just simple poached eggs on sourdough.
The lattes are also really nice and we normally end up having two each during a visit. Can’t wait until our new born is old enough to taste the kids options.
Up until now we have only been for breakfast, but we’re planning a lunch visit this week.

Bear is a lovely independant cafe which serves, cold/hot drinks and food. Their coffee is superior in quality compared to other local and well known cofes. The staff always give a 1st class service and are lovely people to have a chat with. Bear uses biodegradable goods (Coffee cups, straws etc) with more coming. Their coffee is ethically sourced from Ethiopia, supporting their coffee growers and their community.
This independant company has done more transitions from plastic to biodegradable goods on the planet than most other places I have been to so far, and is by far one of the best places to grab a quick bite to eat and/or enjoy a luxurious cup of coffee. I am sure I will be one of your regular customers for many years to come.

Lovely atmosphere with really friendly staff. Been a couple times for breakfast and lunch and haven't been disappointed once. The food is fresh, and the coffee is delicious! The avocado on toast is a great vegan option, and I love little additions on top. It would be nice to potentially see more options in the future but can't complain with the current offerings hence the 5 stars.
A. J.
Absolutely adore this place.
It's very hard to find good vegan cakes, but Bear smashed it. The location is stylish and bright, the service is fast and friendly, there are lots of options and all looked amazing. We will definitely be back!
Worth a visit whenever you're near Derby!!!!

I'm just finishing up my "BEAR Breakfast" as I type this, it is truly fantastic food, I will certainly be coming back!
The V60 handbrew was delightful, it seemed to be almost fruity in taste with a slight woody overtone, notably lacking any bitter flavours. Admitedly I'm not a coffee expert and this is an undeniably snobby description of the flavour profile, so please do take what I say with a pinch of salt.
Either way BEAR is fantastic!

A menu with a twist. I enjoyed my smashed avocado with bacon! Not being a Coffee aficionado, my flat white tasted like any other but appreciated the presentation. I did not get any relation of the decor and house music in the background to the brand. Will definitely visit again to try out the rest of the menu.
N. S.
Very good coffee! Nice atmosphere.
The waffles seemed store-bought and the portions were a bit small, unfortunately.
S. W.
I’m always looking for good coffee with a great vibe and Bear gives both in Ample supply. Brunch was pretty great to. A good pit stop place. The only thing that stopped it getting 5 stars was the toilets were pretty dirty...
V. P.
The food was nice although didn't mention the menu that it will be spicy. But very well presented except the bit withered leaves which I'm not sure if it was intentionally like this.
Some staff are nice but the guy at the bar not really.
M.
One of the best coffees I have ever had and outstanding breakfast quality. It’s a nice and cosy place too. Really enjoyed it.
M. R.
This place is amazing, it has the whole package, great drinks food and service. I can't rate it highly enough. Me and my wife try to come here once a month
S. S.
Food was delicious, we had the pulled pork and pineapple pizza… wow! So good what a beautiful combination! The double double burger as well, looked amazing and the burger patty tasted like a steak - so well cooked and seasoned.
The staff are all very welcoming and kind
I’m surprised it was so quiet, this place is so underrated; 100% recommend.
Thank you.
K. W.
Staff was really lovely..polite and friendly. Food was very yummy..and hot chocolates both white and normal was to die for. Atmosphere was warm and cozy.
C.
As always the coffee here is top quality! Staff are always super friendly and the atmosphere is amazing! Would always recommend!
A.
I love this place. It's aesthetic, atmosphere and food and drinks are all incredible!
I ordered a cold iced latte on a really hot day last week, and it was no joke the best iced latte I've ever had.
These top standards do attract a lot of people which adds to the bustling atmosphere. My favourite coffee shop to go to! <3
J. M.
Lovely, welcoming ambience, tasty grub and very friendly service! Huge portions too which is always a plus.
T. T. B.
Utterly beautiful and delicious coffee! A warm and welcoming staff too :-)
G. W.
Good social distancing, good coffee & hot chocolate, didn’t eat but food looked really good. Lots of gluten free and vegan options available.
M. S.
The bear is a lovely modern coffee shop. Great coffee and an ideal place for chilling out and people watch. Get your laptop out and chill. The staff are really nice and friendly. Would definitely go again.
J. M.
Great bar!! I have only ever visited for breakfast but have enjoyed it loads. Food is of a great standard and plenty of options well worth a visit. Picture is of the mushroom breakfast with fresh chilli!!! Amazing!!!
M. H.
Great venue and great food at reasonable prices. Our kids had a children's meal and couldn't finish them. They were really great value. The coffee and tea were both great although our daughter wasn't so keen on the hot choc.
T. N.
This place is just what Derby needed it amazing staff where very friendly and helpful. The food was inexpensive and tasted fantastic must try all cakes they looked amazing. The bacon butties where done just right. And the drinks came out looking gorgeous and tasted just as good. I can not wait for my next visit or three man on a mission here to try every cake mmmm
H. T.
I loved this place a lot more before it had a makeover. It used to be dark and mysterious, now it’s too bright! The coffee is great and the staff are okay. Less friendly than normal this time and I was shocked to have to pay £3.50 for a cinnamon bun that was horrible. Each swirl had spoonfuls of brown sugar encrusted within and it was far too sweet. Too expensive for a little treat.
J. G.
Excellent place to go for brunch, great menu and efficient service with a smile every time.
T. W.
Great spot for brunch or lunch with friendly and helpful staff. Provide an excellent selection of meals, snacks and coffees in a warm, clean and comfortable setting.
C. S.
My friend and I visited Bear for the first time today. It was pleasantly busy with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. We found a table straight away and ordered at the bar. My friend had a salted caramel milkshake and I had a soya milk latte and piece of vegan chocolate brownie. After a short wait, our drinks were brought to our table. After just one sip, my friend said his shake was the nicest drink he'd ever tasted. He continued to rave about it with every sip. The vegan brownie was dense, sticky and very chocolatey. The soya milk latte was frothy and hot and accompanied it perfectly. After this positive experience, I shall be visiting Bear again and recommend it to anyone.

Staff were very friendly, polite and welcoming. The place looked stunning inside, the decor was beautiful - cosy, romantic and welcoming, yet still modern and unique. The food was incredible; I had the angry mac burger with fries, and couldn’t fault it in the slightest, and also a good price! Would 100% return
A. T.
Coffee is really good and it's a very nice place to chill in! The food also looked great when it came out but unfortunately it was a bit bland in flavour.
C. P.
Very busy for Sunday brunch. Service was excellent considering that the cafè was full. Felt unrushed and the staff were very friendly. Can recommend their shakshuka, a bargain at £8.
A. H.
Great atmosphere, menu strictly divided by time of day into breakfast/brunch, lunch and dinner. Not a huge range of options in each one, but executed well. Staff were friendly, service was quick despite it being a busy Saturday lunchtime. Dropped a star, because despite baby change and high chairs, there was no children’s menu - or smaller versions of main menu offered.
J. S.
Really nice breakfast. Lovely vibrant decoration and pleasant quick service. The house coffee is very tasty too.
T. J.
Very good to exceptional food and drink, their espresso based coffee takes some beating in this area. Still following Covid 19 rules so you may have to wait a while.
Easily recommended
M. L.
Seems popular, good price considering food was fresh and tasty and nice friendly staff to boot.
C. C.
My lunch was delicious but stingy portion size.
Came away needing more to eat😞
S. M.
Visited for some coffee and lunch. Coffee - absolutely delicious, barista was spot on. Food was ok. Staff- polite, but not really friendly, bubbly. I feel more welcome in other "Bear" ( Derbion shopping centre) Staff members there are fantastic.
B. C.
Food is good but quite expensive. Note that Sourdough toast pictured described as "The Loaf" was £3.50 for two small thin slices with butter.
S. H.
Nice atmosphere, great for chilling in the centre of town. Eclectic menu, tasty food and coffee but disappointed that the service was very slow and the food barely lukewarm when it arrived. The cafe was busy over lunchtime so maybe better at a quieter time of day.
I. W.
Great visit to BEAR. I brought my Grandad out for a birthday breakfast and we were both very pleased. I requested a window seat when booking which we were given. Ordering via the app was easy, food was delicious and our server was very friendly. Glad to see that COVID restrictions haven't lowered BEAR's standards.
J.
Wife likes it but our drinks were cold and could not be bothered to go through the complainant process as we were in a hurry due to parking
A. C.
Such an amazing atmosphere and the staff are so lovely. The drinks and food is really well prepared, my favourite place in Derby.
L. T. C.
Went in for a late breakfast to treat my partner after work. I had the smashed avocado with poached eggs and they had the BEAR Breakfast with an extra mushroom instead of a tomato. The portions were a little small for our taste, but the food was quality and fantastically cooked. The staff were very helpful and put the place in a good mood. Definitely worth a look into if you want a good, relaxed brunch.
C. P.
First visit to bear after numerous people telling me to go so glad I did. Had a lovely breakfast of bacon and pancake along with a flat white. Coffee was absolutely delicious. Tables were spaced out and sanitation on way in. Overall a good experience will visit again soon 😊
a.
Food was very nice albeit priced slightly high. The service was average, I had to ask for condiments and there was no table service, so you order at the bar and then go back to your seat.
V. B.
Very busy place. Food was lovely and staff very nice and helpful.
My issue is that it's a 20 minute wait for cup of tea. I didn't mind waiting 30 minutes for food as it was cooked fresh. But not 20 minutes for tea.
Food was great and filling. I asked for salmon on the side and got plenty. The breakfast for the husband was tasty, but a little dry. Nothing a bit of HP sauce couldn't help with.
e. C.
Delicious, a bit more expensive for a regular visit (if you compare to a Starbuck etc which this is not), somewhere for a nice treat. Very polite and helpful staff. I really liked the décor.
J. M.
Best coffee I could find in Derby with different bean options!
J. B.
Great food, excellent coffee and always served with a smile. So much better than a national chain option!
K. B.
With everything going on it’s easy for restaurants to lose great customer service however BEAR staff were amazing! Food was beautiful. A staff member that stuck out the most was Callum. He was so polite and even though I ordered the wrong drink he made me a different one anyway! Definitely going back and I hope to see Callum there! ❤️
N. I. B.
Nice enough breakfast, only £4.50 for poached eggs on toast. Strange that the toast didn't come buttered though!
N. E. S.
Being seated was a little slow but there was only 1 staff on the floor and he seemed a little rushed, running around never stopped! but the food was good though, first time coming and might come again for another occasion but maybe not for a spontaneous meal out, was a bit pricey for breakfast I think.
L.
Fab atmosphere, awesome smashed avocado, can’t wait to go back
M. R. J.
Excellent coffee, in a vibrant, lively & busy environment. Plenty of atmosphere. Good service.
Highly recommend.
