Reviews of Riverview Kitchen
C. R.
An undoubtedly beautiful cafe with one of the best views in Durham. The food is really nice, they have a good variety of options, with good portions that are well-priced. The pancakes are very yummy and so are the jackfruit bao buns. I did get the avocado toast once though and they were pretty stingy on the avocado, which was used more as a spread than as a topping. The carrot cake was lovely, but very cinnamon-heavy if that’s not for you. The coffee is amazing, which feels like a must for any cafe. Overall, great view & good food.

Fabulous restaurant café for lunch/brunch. Visited this weekend on Saturday lunch and Sunday breakfast whilst staying in Durham to visit my daughter at Uni. She recommended the place. Saturday lunch was delicious …I had the smashed avocado and chilli on toast and my daughter had the goat’s cheese toastie. Both were so tasty that every mouthful was a delight. Even the little bowl on the side of cucumber with dill is so tasty. Perfectly balanced dishes. Afterwards we shared a triple chocolate
brownie which was SO good.
This café has a beautiful setting. I visited once before in summer on a sunny day and it was lovely sitting in the seats by the river-side. This time it was a cold wet weekend but the place was warm and cozy.
You can’t book and therefore as it is popular you have to queue at lunchtime but well worth the 20-30 mins wait. No many places I’m willing to stand in drizzle and cold but definitely worth it here.
There was an issue with a customer whilst we were there on Saturday lunch and a junior waitress reported it to the manager/owner. We ended up speaking to the owner who was lovely and apologetic for something not the fault of the restaurant but an inconsiderate customer. Whole issue was professionally handled by the owner. We returned again on Sunday morning for breakfast, where my daughter thoroughly enjoyed her granola bowl. The loose-leaf teas here (served in a lovely pot) were really tasty too and the quality is worth the extra cost for a tea.

Beautiful cafe/restaurant, it's a hidden gem right in the middle of Durham city centre! The view from the window was beautiful, so peaceful and calming. The heaven chocolate and millionaire shortbread tasted great, but the highlight without a doubt was the homemade carrot cake, it was divine! It was a generous portion too. The service was great, the staff were very friendly and fast. Would recommend 100%!

We went to Riverview Kitchen for breakfast and it won't be the last!! If you have a dog, don't worry because they are dog friendly! My friend brought her dog with us and they even gave him biscuits which was very sweet of them. The service was very warm and friendly and made us feel like at home. We ordered pancakes which were amazing! But they offer a huge varity of items for breakfast. So if you don't have a sweet tooth, they got you! Honestly, if you are looking for a cozy place to have coffee, breakfast or simply to have a good time, visit the Riverview Kitchen. Thank you for looking after us!! We'll definitely go back!!

One of the greatest cafe in Durham!! Really large portion of food with a really reasonable price. Their tea is really nice too, and the amount is much more than I expected. Lucky that I dun hv to queue (perhaps due to holidays) highly recommend.
L. M.
Really good food, but perhaps slightly overpriced for the amount of food you get. The pancakes are a classic, but I chose to get the Bao Buns on this occasion. They were really delicious - would recommend if you fancy trying something different!
S. R.
Overall 5/5
A medium sized restaurant pitched right next to the river leading to a great view whilst you eat
Definitely recommend the pancakes which are freshly made
S. A.
Stunningly beautiful location right in the river. A very nice brunch selection too; I enjoyed the poached eggs with avocado sourdough toast, followed by a cream scone. Looking forward to a return trip!

I will definitely be coming back!

Very busy, but staff were all so pleasant, food was amazing! my husband had a BLT which he's still reminiscing about. I got a piece of carrot cake for sweet which was absolutely enormous and delicious. The atmosphere was lovely. I always feel the staff get on well here and it comes across in the service. Lovely views across the river, as the name suggests :)
J. E.
The food here is amazing. Staff are very friendly and accommodate dogs too. Will definitely be coming back
B. N.
Love the location and the river view. The breakfast was basic. The presentation of the breakfast could be improved. I would recommend the pancakes as it was very rich and fluffy.
k. e.
I had the scottish heather & vanilla tea and pancakes with maple syrup and blueberries. Everything was lovely and reasonably priced. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The view of the river wear is amazing! Clean tables and toilets
R. W.
Had a great brunch here. The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent.
P. H. H.
Good food with great views of Framwellgate Bridge. 14 century. Lovely staff.
D. M.
Can’t beat the view of the river while eating brunch. Had the full english breakfast and the sausage was lovely-meaty, not fatty. It was busy, so looks like a popular spot.
N. S.
Great location to sit and enjoy your food/drink next to the river. Food was nice and the staff are friendly too. Had to queue to get in but only for 5 minutes or so. Worth waiting for.
M. M.
A beautiful, modern, light and airy space with a casual vibe. There are fantastic views to the Framwellgate bridge and the river. The menu is comprehensive and should cater to most tastes including vegetarian and vegan. We loved the milkshakes especially. All the food was tasty although my favourite was the avocado and mushroom on toast. We didn't live the pancakes as much, found them a bit on the heavy side. I lived the green tea - a lovely fragrant loose leaf blend served in a cute teapot. If you like hot chocolate then definitely order one here - it is described as chocolate heaven and it is! The staff are friendly and helpful. It is nearby to Durham cathedral (visits after 1pm) and parking can be a bit scarce. We parked at the walker carpark near the leisure centre (approx 5-10min walk away).
G. C.
The only menu item you need to order at the Riverview Kitchen are the banoffee pancakes. Superb texture, fluffy inside yet the right amount of crispness on the outside, see for yourself from the pictures I posted. Oh, and the urinal is special too - never seen a beer keg used like that before.
T.
Absolutely wonderful local brunch place with an amazing view. Had an amazing atmosphere and the staff were very friendly! I would give 6 stars if I could!
R. S.
Amazing! Superb location. Brilliant staff and a fantastic menu. Partner is gluten intolerant and staff were super on the ball for what he could eat. Visited next day and server from previous day saw him with his meal and checked he was OK with something on the plate. Brilliant attention to detail. I was being healthy so skipped the pancakes but they look good! I'll try them next time I'm in town!
Picture is the mushroom on avacado with additional poached eggs on top. Delicious!
A. L.
High quality local food produce, well presented. Sitting by the window watching the leaves on the river go by. Very popular with locals... that says it all.
K. B.
Steak & philly cheese sandwich with chunky chips was awesome... The wife had Leek & Potato homemade soup was delicious according to the wife but not as good as mine 🤣🤣
A. R.
One of my new favourite places in Durham, what a little gem. Breakfast was amazing, as was the flat white. Service was lovely, food came quickly and the portions are very generous! Plenty veggie and veegie options to choose from! We absolutely love to see it (cakes looked amazing but too full to get them boo)
S. W.
Food was lovely but service was very slow. Shame no alcohol licence, a glass of wine with lunch would have raised the review to 5 star!
L. A.
A riverside restaurant serving nice food and drinks. Cozy environment. Mid range prices. Food quality was good but staff not very professional. Had brunch there. Ordered two food items and two hot drinks. The chocolate was a bit sweet for me so i asked for a cup of hot water afterwards hoping to dilute the taste. The waitress brought it over the table and said that they would charge for the hot water. I felt absurd as she never made me aware of the charge beforehand. In many other countries, hot water is free anytime anywhere even for refills! I didn't mind paying for the additional small amount of money but I might order an alternative such as a cup of hot black tea instead. The customer service was fairly unsatisfactory.
For curiosity, I asked for the price of the charge. Another waiter explained that they didn't know we had ordered drinks and thus charges for hot water. Now that the situation was clear to them and they were not going to levy the charge and it's free then.
Even the food was good, the mood to enjoy had been greatly discounted. Not very pleasant dining experience.
L. B.
Views of the river is beautiful, kept seeing fish jump out the water, food was absolutely amazing, latte was beautiful and loved the little clay tea pot that the tea came in, service was second to none, friendly polite staff, no waiting around, drinks were brought out, food shortly followed will definitely be returning, highly recommend
C. S.
We had the best breakfast. The service was excellent and all of the staff were friendly and checking we were on and we had all we needed. The food was delicious. We even got a sausage cut up into pieces for our Boxer dog Dave.
There was a queue to get in but don’t but put off, plenty of room inside so we didn’t wait long and it was so worth it. We will certainly return, lovely place for a latte and a bite to eat after a river walk.
K. S.
Can be busy but had a space in the window which was lovely and had great views across the water and bridge. Lovely loose leaf tea (2.5 cups in a pot) and large tasty scone cream tea.
G. J.
Another day off and another trip to Boro central and one of the best places to have a bite to eat. This time we had a croissant and a panini and it was great, simple as that
E. S.
Nice food and great services doggy is allowed .Full English breakfast is nice sausages were lovely.. beans could have been hotter but still nice. Always busy but worth it
A. F.
Riverview Kitchen seemed the ideal place to go for a late breakfast/early lunch. It has a great view overlooking the River Wear hence its name.
I had a vegan Sausage & Red Onion Marmalade Ciabatta while my boyfriend had a sausage & red onion marmalade. It was served with side salad, a few nachos and cucumber in vinegar. We shared a large pot of tea equivalent to 3 cups of tea for both of us. He ordered a macchiato as well . It kept us going virtually the whole day and was at a reasonable price.
J. B.
Great staff, great food, great atmosphere! There is a slightly limited selection on their lunch menu but the amazing river view totally makes up for it.
h.
We love this place!! Finally we had English breakfast, we enjoyed it. They were getting busy when we were there, it was 9am!! I can't imagine how busy they can be later.
H.
Absolutely amazing 'hidden gem'. High quality food and drink, clean and pleasant interior plus friendly staff. A fantastic establishment.
t.
Pleasant, vibrant atmosphere, friendly staff. Some nice nosh with a pleasant view of the river. Dog friendly too!
H.
Great food, friendly staff, and a lovely view. Only complaint is the fly problem (which is almost guaranteed with riverside cafes), which could be rectified with a bug zapper.
K.
Delicious food and really friendly and accommodating staff, new girl helped me pay with a non contactless debit card.
J. L.
Staff are very attentive here, if a little too much at times. They see you approaching the door and open it before you're even there. This can give the impression that you're being rushed in. And a waitress loitered by our table for ages while we were still choosing from the menu which was a little unnerving.
Pancakes were just about warm on arrival to our table but they were light and fluffy and toppings were nice.
H. G.
Friendly service as always. Great selection of breakfast, lunch and coffee/cake. Can get pretty busy but the staff always greet you with a smile. Dog friendly too and the food is always good. My favourite cafe in Durham.
p. s.
Stumbled upon this little gem while standing on the bridge above and noticing it's location. The venue is brilliant right on the river in Durham. The staff are 1St class and can't do enough for you.The food is excellent and has that homemade feel to it.Choice of sandwiches to paninis to burgers and the price point is really good. This will be a regular eating spot for us from now on
C. A.
Great location and breakfast was delicious! Pancakes are recommended.
M. M. P.
My son took me here, as he thought this is a nice good cafe, overlooking the river Wear. He was right. The owner of this cafe knows how to serve people and try to accommodate their needs. The panini was good, the scone just right the coffee good, though it got cold because it was brought up before the food. My fault, I should have mentioned I like my coffee brought the same time with food. Don't like it drinking it on its own. Anyhow, I cannot fault this place.
J. H.
Excellent food as usual. Pancakes all round with some great coffee. Service was reasonable - around 15 minutes to arrive (and it was busy). Happy to make a special order for my son. Few dogs scattered around as usual but all well behaved.
Update - still excellent
b. t.
Very good, got a seat very quickly ,with great view of the river, mushroom soup was great, nice hot tea, reasonable prices, nice staff,Excellent.
K. M.
Fantastic little eatery over looking the river. Complimented by a great staff and a warm and cozy atmosphere! Truly a hidden gem in the Durham cafe scene!
S. H.
Lovely little restaurant with fantastic river views , everything about the place is first class , well worth a visit if in Durham
K. B.
Lovely food and smoothies. Great service from friendly staff. Dog friendly inside and outside
S. W.
A cafe with a view. Cakes and coffee were very tasty, the river view makes it a great place to relax. The service is friendly and efficient. A great place to take a break from sightseeing and shopping in Durham.
S. A.
Great flat white, great breakfast options. The lunch and cakes looked good too.
L. S.
Lovely place with a fantastic view and amazing staff. Looked after us very well, including providing everything we needed to enjoy our first time out with a 4 week old. Looking forward to going back and trying the things that didn't make the order this time.
E.
Always lovely food, quick service and very friendly staff.
E. M.
My favourite place to eat. Staff friendly and menu interesting for lunch, tea, coffee and cake and the like. They've changed the chips which is a shame as they're not as good as the weird cut ones they had, but still worth 5 stars. Can be very busy as it's next to the river.
H. A.
I have only been for breakfast, but it is probably the best breakfast I have ever had. Highly recommend the vegetarian wrap and pancakes. Amazing food, and home baked treats to take home with you. The staff are lovely and even allow dogs, 10/10 can’t wait to go back
K. H.
Good food, huge portions and very friendly staff. Lovely view over the river. The pancakes are delicious!
B. M.
Views across the river are beautiful if you can grab a window seat. Breakfast was delicious and the coffee was really good. We had a high chair given to use for our little one but unfortunately, there was no baby changing facilities. The staff were very friendly and we would definitely return.
N. C.
Very nice food, lovely atmosphere, great views!
k.
great view of river
M. G.
Had a chicken & bacon ciabatta. Nice enough, and sat with a good view of the river. Good service.
A.
Went on river walk on Wednesday and decided to call in to this cafe absolutely lovely.
Great welcome from all staff
Ordered tea, coke,BLT and Chips to share. It was beautiful presented with the most unusual pickled cucumber on the side the presentation was faultless. Chips to die for.
Even the tea pot was quirky
We ordered the banana and walnut cake which was the most moist cake I have ever tasted
We sat outside and it was perfect I can honestly say 10 out of 10 and we will bust Durham again just to come here it’s well worth a visit.
H. G.
Food was nice, service was good, but the place was freezing and it didn't help that I'd been sat close to the door despite there being loads of free tables. Finished my meal quickly so I could find somewhere warmer 🥶
D. G.
A great little find along the river in Durham. Loose leaf tea, ciabattas, open sandwiches, and real lemonade - along with good service and a well decorated interior - made for an enjoyable lunch.
J. S.
Very nice view, by the river, and the servers were friendly and the food came fairly quickly.
E. M.
Delicious home made food on a beautiful setting, despite the rain! They make their own houmous, the best I have ever tasted!
N. E.
What an amazing place! Great atmosphere, fantastic food and the best staff. They made our youngest child’s birthday so special by getting the whole restaurant to sing happy birthday. He loved it! Highly recommend.
S. W.
Nice place for breakfast on the Durham riverside. Eggs royal were lush.
l. m.
Lovely views food nice but was a bit crammed where we were seated good service
j.
I’ve been twice and had amazing pancakes both times! The customer service is excellent and they do the best coffee I’ve ever had! I would definitely recommend Riverview Kitchen is your looking for some great pancakes and coffee.
S. L.
Beautiful view especially when it's sunshine outside!! Very recommended place for family and friends brunch in a cool atmosphere.
N. G. (.
It has a really nice atmosphere, good food and great staff. There is a small outside seating area and window seats inside with good views of the river. Dog's are well catered for with treat's and water.
T. G.
Lovely restaurant/coffee shop for a quick meal or sit and stay affair. Nice coffee and pancakes were delicious. Very strange urinal but imaginative use....
A. b.
Lovely decor and gorgeous views of the river. Only had cheese scone and coffee on this visit. The scone was warm and very cheesy. Other food being served looked delicious with good portion size. The stack of pancakes looked particularly good.
A. E.
Must try pancakes
Hot chocolate was great
Pricey but worth trying
E. C.
Lovely quick service for a delicous teacake and latte to warm me up after a long wait for a bus. Was very busy at 9am on a Sunday morning. Will certainly return.
G. J.
Lovely food quick service excellent views
S. B.
Great views of the river and food and service were excellent
H. M.
Great coffee, great choice of meals and cakes. The view is tremendous (on a sunny day like today, the ripples on the river shine on the ceiling making you feel like you are under water).
The staff are great - attentive without being intrusive, always in good humour.
Place is always busy, which reflects the quality and value for money. But there are a lot of tables so they have always fitted us in. Somehow it doesn't get too noisy, in spite of how lively everyone is
S. G.
A must stop off during a walk along the banks. Owner welcomed us and made sure all his guests were safe during their visit. Great tea and cake alongside fantastic service. When we leave scotland again to visit the south, this will be again on our list. Thank you for your kind hospitality.
G. C.
Lovely local dog-friendly cafe with a fab setting by the river - we come here often. The owners make you feel totally welcome and the service is quick. I like any of the pancakes, posh fish finger sandwich or avo+sourdough, plus any of the coffees!
M. H.
A fantastic place to visit! Great views up and down the river with food to match. The place was extremely busy but the service was brilliant. Really friendly staff who are happy to have a giggle with you & delicious food. Try the pancakes !!! The menu is varied with savoury & sweet items -
I. G.
Stumbled upon this cafe after visiting the Cathedral.
We were shown to our table very quickly.
The staff were very friendly, especially with our 10 month old Cocker Spaniel!
The food was excellent and portions were of a good size
I can particularly recommend the milkshakes mmm
An extra bonus was the meal was 50% off, as the cafe is part off the eat out to help out scheme 😃
s. h.
Great service and food! Dog friendly too
P. H.
Great place. Best pancakes in Durham. A little expensive and gets very busy by lunch time at weekends
A. T.
Lovely quaint cafe with quite a large menu variety which surprised me. The milkshakes are absolutely to die for, in addition to the cake selection (I recommend the Oreo square & raspberry milkshake!) Reasonably price and lovely view. Staff very friendly and helpful. Decor is quirky, I love it!
A. P.
You’ll have to logo a long way to beat this place
For breakfast/brunch
Pancakes are insane 👍🏻👍🏻
D. W.
Dog friendly cafe in the heart of Durham. We had sticky chicken salad and sticky chicken bao buns for lunch. Both were delicious. Popular with students and couples and friends.
S. B.
Great pancakes and exceptional service🔥
S. A. P.
This cafe spot is simply amazing, you get to relax down the Riverside watching the water pass by, the views are so chilling! The place is dog friendly and so that's one of the reasons we visited. They give you a few dog treats on arrival and our dog already knows this! You can sit inside or outside with plenty of space to move around. It does get a bit cosy when it's busy but that's OK with me. We got the pancake stack £7.25 I think and chose the Nutella and Banana. The pancakes are just immense! They are light, fluffy and well worth the cash 🥞😊 my Mrs and I shared the plate with a large cappuccino each and left feeling totally satisfied. Along with the lovely space and good food & drink they also play some of THE BEST music. You simply have to visit and experience the venue yourself. I will be coming back so I can get some more photos 😁

Excellent! Dog friendly and even friendlier staff. We called in here whilst taking the pup for a walk along the Riverside and noticing they were dog friendly. Straight away the staff made a big fuss over our pup, giving her cuddles and treats and making sure we weren't sitting too close to other dogs which would cause commotion.
The food was of exception quality with a breakfast menu being served at the time. Loose leaf tea is on offer here too which is a hard to find commodity it most restaurants and cafes these days but a welcomed surprise.
If you want good quality food at a more than reasonable price then this is the place. Excellent for days out with your dog.
G. W.
First time here today and not disappointed. Great choice of food with many available as gluten free options. Had a lovely table overlooking the river and were lucky enough to see an otter go by! Staff were fun, cheeky man on the till, and an ingenious piece of upcycling in the gents!
O. G.
Lovely place, great home-made food (I took the soup and a brownie) The soup was good enough, but the highlight of the lunch was the brownie. Warm, gooey, delicious, I really enjoyed it. The prices are ok, considering the fact that it's always nice to support a small independent restaurant.
O. W.
Love this place. Very welcoming to dogs. Makes such a difference to have such a nice dog friendly café. Always busy and you can see why. Food is excellent, but on the pricier side of cafe stuff. But I'm not usually here for an overly cheap meal.
H. M.
Staff made us feel welcome immediately and put us at a great table with views of the river and bridge. It's very beautiful.
Service fast but unhurried. Coffee just right, interesting menu well executed. Went back same day after a walk around the river - it's that good!
Will become a favorite
B. G.
Lovely friendly staff, very nice food and a nice atmosphere. It's dog friendly too, so we get to take Arthur with us! Definitely worth a visit if you're in Durham!
D. N.
Was a fantastic experience we all had a wonderful time.drinks an cake was delicious 😊
r. k.
great view of river
A. M.
Great food and atmosphere. You might have to queue outside, but the queue moves quickly and it's worth the wait.
S. M.
Nice latte and bacon stottie outdoors watching fish jumping.
K. W.
Beautiful setting and great city centre location. Enjoyed 2 lunches staring at the river. Extensive menu lots of vegetarian options. Dogs welcome which made me smile. Reasonably priced with friendly staff. Toilets clean. Lots of stairs
l. n.
I went to Riverview Kitchen today and I fell in love with this place. The view is amazing, so relaxing and cozy. The staff are really nice, always smiling. The carrot cake with cinnamon is delicious. I will be going there more often from now on. Thank you Riverview Kitchen team!
S. B.
Can't recommend this place enough. Gorgeous food the goats cheese and caramelised red onion sourdough and halloumi, beetroot and chilli jam sandwiches are so tasty. Piping hot cappuccino and biscuits for your fur babies. X
D. M.
I went here for breakfast with a friend of mine, and I have to say it's a little more setting over substance. The view of the bridge and river is lovely, but the food leaves a little to be desired. The coffee was nice enough but for £7.95 you can get much better veggie breakfasts elsewhere.
P. P.
Beautiful location and great breakfast. Nice menu albeit a little limited. From what I saw and ate, what they do, they do well.
d. f.
Great little find in Durham . If you love great food and great views you wont find better .
A. B.
I've wanted to try here for a while as the menu looked great and the location is spot on. We ordered 2 toasted ciabatta, a can of coke and an iced latte which altogether was over £18. Quite steep for food that was 'nice enough' but nothing special. Anyway, like I said, the place has been decorated beautifully and the cakes and scones looked delicious. The thing me and my husband were most bemused by was how miserable the staff were! We didnt see any of them smile, even at each other, for the whole time we were there and their manner towards the customers wait rather cold and unwelcoming. The staff seemed to be flying around the place, bumping into customers and each other, which made the atmosphere feel almost awkward. However, the saving grace was the gentleman who took our payment at the end; he was friendly and chatty and asked us about our day. Maybe he could help develop the customer service aspect of the business.
I wouldn't rush back but would possibly give it another try if I was passing.
K. W.
Great service, food is absolutely delicious. Easy location to get to, and the view of the river makes a very pleasant atmosphere to eat in.
R. S.
Stingy with the smoked salmon, surely not enough on the bread.
L. J. F.
Lovely place to have a snack or lunch. So welcoming to us and our dog. Treats for him and a treat for us as food was amazing.
C. W.
Good service, happy staff, nice layout with tables overlooking the river. Lunchtime food really good and a selection of cakes with an interesting range of teas as well as the usual coffees. Their chai tea is a favourite of mine.
a. s.
Super breakfast. Wife says the beacon was the tastiest she's ever had ( northern pigs must be happier and fed right). My veggie breakfast was spot on and the teapots delivered 2 full cups. Well done guys keep it up.
D. R.
Called in today with my daughter, the staff are excellent very friendly and welcoming.the food was fantastic ,pea and mint soup went down a treat ,scones were lovely aswell.what a nice place!
S. B. (.
Food was fine, bacon a little to fatty but generally nice and amazing view but the cashier was the rudest person I've met, she gives off an angry head teacher vibe. Still good to go, it's noisy but fantastic for a light meal and drinks.
F. S.
Excellent breakfast, the milk shake was great too (cured my hangover :P) the veggie breakfast is really good also. proper good spread!
and the toast was propper! nice staff too. it has a garden also. i'd say book ahead on the weekends as it gets busy.
A. P.
Riverview Kitchen seemed the ideal place to go for a late breakfast/early lunch. The only downside was that they stopped serving breakfast after 12pm - however there was a large number of choices on the menu i.e. jacket potatoes, paninis, open sandwiches, ciabattas, soup etc.
I had a Sausage & Red Onion Marmalade Ciabatta - which still felt like a breakfast-style bap. It was served with side salad, a few nachos and cucumber in vinegar. All this with several cups of tea and a macchiato went down perfectly - the ciabatta was very substantial (kept me going all day) and a good price. Additionally, the view overlooking the River Wear in the sun could not have been better.
It was dog-friendly also.
G. B.
Great service and lovely staff! Would recommend especially on a nice warm day. You also get a beautiful view of the river too!
R. F.
Ordered chips came with a mayonnaise or ketchup side sauce, staff were lovely and polite
P. S.
Nice location and food was good...soup was filling...some less than usual menu options as well...was busy for lunch...kitchen was a little slow...but nothing to complain about...would go again...
S. B.
Very pretty little restaurant. It's not expensive and has an amazing location right on the river.
N. M.
One of our favourite places to visit when in Durham. Lovely selection of cakes (and pancakes) to choose from.
M. C.
The stars are for the scenarios, its right on the river absolutely gorgeous. The food and drinks are over priced and a big let down.
G. B.
The service was slow and one waitress was rude and we had to ask her for milk three times. The banoffee pie was subpar- the base was over cooked and the sauce was a shop bought ice cream sauce. The chips are excellent and the location is lovely. However the bathrooms we're dirty. An ok place but not somewhere to rush back to (unless you want chips).
D. A.
Beautiful location, views and great food and service.

Owners previously owned cafe in Saddlers Yard. Still the same friendly greeting, good service and quality food, decent portions compared to the competition, yet canny prices for the city. The new place though is in a much nicer riverview location. Get there early for a window seat because this place is popular. Well recommended!
D. M. A.
The Riverview kitchen is dog friendly and the food Nice
V. H.
Came upon this café in an alleyway just off the Framwellgate Bridge and had a late lunch here. The staff were very welcoming. Very pleasant surroundings, bright modern decor, lovely river views and outside tables. The tea came in an unusual decorated metal teapot that kept it nice and hot! Good choice of sandwiches, salads and jacket potato fillings on the menu. Opted for the ham, cheese and autumn chutney ciabatta with salad and tortilla chips. The meal was well presented and the salad was fresh, my one criticism is that the ciabatta was not very well filled. Prices are about average. Would come again if only to try one of those tempting cakes on the counter!
A. J.
Lovely food, excellent service, they have great choices on the menu. I also noticed that you could bring your dogs in, which I thought was good as not many places allow that theses days so good to know they are dog friendly will definitely come again
M. E.
Absolutely gorgeous food & brilliant service too - dog friendly as well, highly recommended
A. L.
We had a great burger and a panko chicken filet burger. Served at a table outside in glorious sunshine facing the river. Service: very good (proper North East service!).
This used to be the old Bella Italia, which was a dump. So the owners have done themselves proud in creating a lovely welcoming restaurant/cafe.
a. p.
great view, food tasteless(especially their wraps). prawn tacos were decent.
cute dogs inside, and there's no alcohol
S. G.
Friendly, efficient service. Wide range of choice on the menu. Great tasting and reasonably priced food. Lovely view, right by the river.
J. S.
Tasty food, strong coffee, beautiful riverside views out large windows, well set up for families with small children, waiting staff pleasant, professional, and extremely good-looking. Prices not cheap, but not outlandish high for Durham.
R. O.
would definitely come back for this lovely, cozy place, the view is fantastic
C. W.
Lovely setting and efficient service. So nice to see the old proprietors of Saddlers back in town.
A. R.
Great little spot to grab some lunch in the centre of Durham. My wife and I stopped here after walking along the riverbank and was easily accessible for us with a pram too.
If I’m being honest you can tell they’re still a young business with a couple of things that need tightening up, such as we visited on a Monday, and they were still rushed off their feet so a couple more staff would probably go a long way. I also ordered a Caramel Macchiato but was served a Espresso Macchiato with a shot of caramel syrup - to me it would have been an obvious step to let me know they served Espresso Macchiatos not Latte Macchiatos. The food however was superb! So much so we decided to stay for dessert and it took a little time to flag down some service, we almost left but I’m so pleased we didn’t as the Carrot Cake was easily one of the best things I’ve ever tasted.
I’ve read some previous reviews that said it was expensive with small portions, which we didn’t find to be the case. We got 2 mains, 2 desserts and 4 drinks for around £30.
S. H.
Excellent customer service and amazing food,we will definitely go back again! Despite COVID-19 causing the menu to become smaller, the food selection was still great.
S. R.
Lovely place to sit outside (weather permitting) enjoy a really good full english breakfast while watching the salmon jumping in the river. Really nice food at very reasonable prices.
S. W.
Really nice. Only stopped for coffee but the food looked nice (massive fish finger sandwich). Dog friendly. Bit pricey for the coffees but overall good.
H. F.
Gorgeous seating by the River Wear... Dine while watching the river slowly flowing by. Soothing sight that's guaranteed to aid your digestion of Ciabattas, sandwiches and burgers. The Quiche Lorraine and Coconut Lime cake were both too dry for my liking. The mushroom soup was pepper hot; which was nice, but strangely sweet; which was weird. Perhaps the BBQ chicken ciabatta was much better.
E. D.
Fantastic bacon stottie and other breakfast choices. Great atmosphere and views. Helpful staff
T. K.
Excellent in every way, food, service and view. Very dog friendly as well. Loved it!!
S. C.
Visiting Durham today, and popped in for the best breakfast I've had. Beautiful cafe and views over the river. Very popular but worth the wait for a table
S. E.
This cafe is fantastic , very welcoming, excellent service, quality food , absolute 💯👌, very busy well worth waiting for a table, can't praise it enough 😀🙌
B. P.
Lovely cafe great service Lovely food we will be back soon. Also dog friendly 🐕🦺🦮🐕
t. j. w.
Looking for a relaxed atmosphere on the rivers edge?, you've found it!.
Lovely food and dog friendly too!.
I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have, and just like me, that you will visit again!.
B. A.
Nice view over the river. No drinks licence so I should have brought my own wine along. Only have light bites at lunchtime, price a bit higher than what you might think.
B. B.
Lovely place, seated by the window enjoying a lovely brunch the food was lovely
D. L.
Riverview Kitchen is an incredible eatery where the fantastic offering of food is only trumped by the wonderful customer service. I wouldn't go anywhere else in Durham. Sit back, relax and share a moment by the river with breakfast and a coffee.
A. B.
So lovely to be back in our favourite cafe. As usual the warmest of welcomes & fabulous food.
A. B.
Our favourite restaurant in Durham, very friendly and helpful staff, dog friendly and amazing food. Cream tea is amazing and the pancakes are the best.
S. P.
Nice location. A lot of bread (Stottie) in proportion to the rest of the ingredients. Nice though!
I. K.
Has a nice view, but portions looked a bit small. Especially the salad coming with quiche and falafel could be a bit more. Also, i do not think that tortillas go well with quich or falafel. So, with a little more salad and chips, it could be more worth for money. Anyway, we just had quich and falafel, you can check other items.
J. S.
Lovely cafe, nice service. I had an oreo milkshake which was yummy. They have coconut milk and oat milk as an alternative to milk. There is some seating outside with a view of the river
S. E.
Lovely service and food. I was also impressed by the presentation of food. The price was not too bad, but not the cheapest you can find in town as well.
D. R.
Friendly staff, great food, great view when you get a window seat.
And people bring their dogs in which I think is wonderful!
S.
Great food, lovely atmosphere and gorgeous views
J. B.
Very average but probably because they were extremely busy. Milk was overboiled in latte and consequently only 1/2 full and lots of froth. Scone quite sweet tasting for a cheese one. I'll give it another try but it will be midweek
L. B.
This establishment is very clean, staff friendly and food delicous. Great views of River Wear. My wife and i had breakfast here and we thouoghly enjoyed it. We will definatly be returning soon.
T. C.
Good atmospheric restaurant with a great view, very friendly staff and good food. Pancakes where fantastic with a soft donut taste.
Manager was very helpful with seating and very friendly. I believe he was the manager he looked like gilderoy lockhart
D. W.
Fabulous place to eat but you do have to wait outside a while when it's busy
C. R.
Very friendlly people, wonderful views, low prices and good food.
J. G.
Dog friendly, great staff, good food River view inside and outside space. Great menu for coffee cakes, lunch nibbles, amazing pankakes , try it and see.
V.
Terrible food. Mushroom soup tasted revolting, sandwiches and quiche unsatisfactory. Good view and service though, would be ok for a coffee, but don't eat here.
k. a.
Cute place with a nice view as on the river. Has a lovely vegan and gluten-free brownie however more mains with these options would be nice.
S. H.
Always a pleasure going into riverview... The staff are superb... Menu and food are great... The views are great too... One of the few places where dogs are welcomed by the staff aswell... We have alfonso the blue staffy and he loves it in here... If you ever visit Durham dip inside to have a look.... Well worth it
L. S.
Lovely setting and friendly staff and nice food. Totally understand why this place was so busy🙂
L. M.
