Reviews of Chapter One Coffee Shop
N. C.
I was absolutely blown away by this hidden gem. The vegan breakfast was so good, we came back the next day and had it again. Before going vegetarian, I was never a big bacon eater, but the bacon on the vegan breakfast has me wanting me still. Absolutely phenomenal, and filled us up for a day in Edinburgh. Great atmosphere and good coffee too, can't fault it.
K. M.
Another gem in Dalry. The first time we went for breakfast the mocha swirl was good just a touch dry. The smoothie breakfast was tasty and very filling containing oats, cocoa, banana, chia seeds and more…but this vegan coffe shop has sandwiches so colourful and amazing looking that we had to go back and try them. The Reuben and Falafel panini with mango Chutney were mouthwatering. We also had a Turmeric Chai latte and my usual flat white that was smooth and delicious.

Awesome place..
Friendly staff. Warm welcome. Great food.
Full breakfast with great vegan haggis was lovely
Festive latte - delicious
H. S.
Had the french toast with bacon and it was delicious! So much flavour and sweetness, absolutely brilliant. The coffee was a little on the colder side but still completely drinkable! In fact that meant it got downed in under 10 minutes because it still tasted delicious! Nice warm, welcoming and enthusiastic staff!
K.
Best Vegan Breakfast I've had for a long time! The French Toast with "bacon" and banana is amazing and the full Scottish Breakfast was tasty too! I enjoyed a chai latte and the coffee went down a treat. Just wish it was more obvious it's all Vegan from the outside!
K. D.
Amazing food and lovely people! Definitely recommend their all day breakfast and cake, if I lived closer I would go all the time!
정.
Their sandwich is my top 3 in Edinburgh... it brought me to New York when I had a first bite.. and could not think of anything else but moan for a joy!
R. M.
An incredible vegan breakfast! One of the very best we've had!
W.
Great wee vegan cafe on Dalry Road, delicious food and friendly staff.
R. G.
Possibly the best vegan croissant I've ever found, in a coffee shop that has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere
H. K.
I love this place! The sandwiches, breakfasts and cakes are all great. The staff are all lovely. Just wish it was a bit bigger because it's always busy (deservedly so).
J. R.
Delicious food and drinks. Cozy atmosphere and friendly staff! Nice to be overwhelmed by vegan options, but you could definitely take non-vegans here and have them greatly enjoy the food and drink.
A. P.
Vegan caffè & environmental friendly. The food is really good and the shop is quite cosy and bright. The prices are normal for a vegan coffe shop. They offer breakfast and lunch options and they care about fair trade and local foods. I really enjoyed going there so I recommend it 100%!
P. E.
Really lovely little cafe. The person working was really friendly and chilled out, despite seemingly running the entire cafe herself. Lots of vegan cakes and food which was great to see. The coffee was delicious too. Will be back!
N. J. (.
Really nice cafe with good coffee and lovely food.
I've been in a few times now and the staff have been friendly.
The space is simple and small but does exactly what you need to meet with friends for lunch or cuppa.
The only thing that surprised me after my third visit was the staff informed me everything is vegan. Which I'm totally fine with, I normally prefer a vegetarian/vegan option when I'm out as my husband is 100% a meat eater.
I know there is something on the menu but I didn't look at it, I was looking at the glass cabinet to pick something from that and the description on the glass didn't indicate anything and as far as I'm aware there was nothing to note that it's a vegan cafe.
I'm giving a four star review because the food was good and I will definitely go back, but I think it should be clearer for people to know what they are buying.
A. S.
The blt bagel is soooo good, especially toasted, cinnamon bun was good but didn't love it. Love that theres a totally vegan cafe in such a convenient location
M. S.
friendly. cosy and great food selection. They have alternative milk choices. Just a bit slow in serving. Clean and free wifi (flatwhite - password).
C. M.
I had a breakfast with my daughter and it was delicious. The coffee shop is bright, clean and the staff and friendly and welcoming. It had a lovely laid back atmosphere.
My daughter had sourdough toast with peanut butter, maple syrup and banana. She said it was really nice but couldn't eat it all as it was such a big portion. I had the (vegan) sausage and bacon roll which was really tasty. We had a fruit smoothie and Cappuccino for drinks which were both great. Can't wait to go again to try the other options.
C. F.
Great little coffee shop to stop in and have great service and quality! We only stopped in for coffee and pastries, but there were many other food options that looked really good! The prices were all very affordable and the staff was very friendly and helpful. When we went it was a tad busy, but there are plenty of tables so that wasn't an issue. Overall great local shop and if you are nearby it is definitely worth stopping in for good coffee and food!
L. E.
Great coffee, nice food. The sandwichs/rolls are amazing! The bread is delicious and the fillings just so yummy (the Mediterranean is my favourite!). Very pleasant staff. Highly recommended
A. M.
100% vegan cafe but I didn't even realise! The wee note on the menu that says it's all vegan isn't very clear, had originally been disappointed I couldn't get a breakfast bap as there didn't seem to be a vegetarian option. Otherwise, nice wee cafe and the food was yummy
z.
Decent coffea but very limited sitting space and poor ventilation. Steamed windows don't encourage for visiting the place again. Good service

Best Vegan Cafe in Edinburgh. ...Fantastic choice and delicious coffee. My must have when I'm in Edinburgh.
S. S.
Excellent coffee shop but the place is so warm . Other than that only positive vibes.
H. W.
Very tasty all vegan selection! Staff also very helpful and friendly.
J. K.
As an Australian suffering through a secondment in Germany and it's woeful coffee cultural, this pleasant little haven was a welcome change on my trip to Edinburgh. Pleasant staff, relaxed beats and delicious coffee.
J. V.
Amazing french toast and lovely teas. They were out of bacon but the pastrami was a great swap!
B. R.
This is my number one place for vegan breakfast and sandwiches. They also do amazing cakes. Everything I have had so far was delicios and coffee is fantastic too. I always go there when I'm in Edinburgh. Best tofu scramble!
J. L.
Absolutely adorable coffee shop with the classic tea and coffee, as well as tasty sandwiches on crusty bread and delicious pastries. Takes Apple and Google Pay, which is fantastic if you're a clueless American (me) who ran in with only her phone in hand!
L. M.
Great spiced chai tea, lovely almond slice cake - all vegan cafe. I will definitely be back!
J. N.
Love this place! It has a cozy atmosphere, people are friendly and nice, and the food is very tasty! It could only have more vegetarian options, but the those they offer - pesto and mozarela toastie and the soup - are delicious!
G. U.
This place is the best - Such good vegan croissants and the staff are super nice. People say the service is slow but its probably only because its always busy because of how good it is... I've never had a problem with their service times and they're aways friendly, welcoming and always tasty food. One of my favourites in Edinburgh
T. P.
Croissants and sandwiches were amazing. One of the best 100% vegan cafe in Edinburgh. Breakfast and lunch menu are very rich. Oat milk flat white and cappuccino were delicious as well.
M. H.
Lovely family business. Fantastic location. Excellent food and drink available. Will be my go to!
N. M.
Popped in with a friend as we were passing. Coffee turned into lunch and then dessert too! All excellent. Artisan feel to the place, very nice to sit and relax. Turns out everything is vegan, which we were not aware of when we made our choice, but really we considered it 'the cherry on the cake'! Can't believe I used to live just nearby and had never been in.
A. M.
One of the few independents where the barista knows what they're doing! I had a smooth Americano - perfect temperature and no coffee dregs 😁 Shall be returning with friends ❤
A. B.
This coffee shop has very delicious food, great coffee and friendly staff.
C. F.
A lovely petite cafe with coffee that's truly satisfying. Despite being situated on the main street the noise level is much quieter than expected.
I recommend this place for students, people working on laptops or just reading a book. Somewhere to go, if you need a change of scenery, with your coffee, cake or food also if you may. It's peaceful and I found minimal distractions. Chapter one strikes me as the type of place you would likely go alone or with perhaps just one other, for a cake and a coffee?
The atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful. The coffee is of a high quality. There were was no raw milk whilst I ordered. However, I don't think that they stock it? It was oat milk I had. For a first try it was superior to my expectations.
The lady who served me was polite, softly spoken and presented well.
I would certainly go back in here if I were passing as it's not the "cafe" experience I expected, in comparison to other competitor's nearby. I consider chapter one a little hidden gem in this area ( not literally, it's located on Dalry road) as it's not what you would expect. I certainly didn't, Iwas more than satisfied. The pricing is fair in my opinion.
If I had to pick out any negatives it would be the size of the coffee cup, it was too small in my opinion. Still delicious and worth the money. I found my chair a little uncomfortable it was very sturdy, made of hard wood, as was the table. The table I was at had two seats but the table was tiny for me alone.
I believe there are toilet facilities on these premises although I did not experience the use of them so cannot confirm if they are present. They may well be downstairs which would mean there are no disabled access toilets.
I hope you have a lovely visit.
N.
Such a relaxing place to visit before getting a train back home, really friendly staff and knowing that everything was vegan was just brilliant. I really enjoyed my sausages in a big roll and coffee. Thank you so much. I certainly would recommend and will be back again, whenever I visit Edinburgh.
D. B.
Delicious vegan cakes & sandwiches!! Thank you :)
g.
One of my local coffee shops, but definitely the best in the area.
Good selection of nice coffees and milks to make the coffees.
Good selection of sandwiches, pastries and cakes, but what you really want to get is one of their bacon rolls......
Staff are great and the cafe has plenty of seating.
K. C.
Nice vegan cafe with excellent coffee and super friendly staff. Nice big window and simple decor that could use some upgrading. Poor ventilation - in colder months the windows are covered in steam.
E. D.
Best coffee shop in Edinburgh and I'd argue the world! Everything is vegan (which I am not but I love to use it as an excuse to eat more of their delicious cake!) the employees are kind and friendly and don't seem to mind an MSc student loitering long after my coffee cup has become empty. The sandwiches, soups and toasts are all incredible, everything I've eaten so far has been exceptionally delicious! Will certainly miss it when I inevitably leave Edinburgh. If you're looking for great atmosphere, amazing food and damn fine coffee its worth the trip!
T. H.
I am very picky about my coffee and I have to say your coffee was one of the best one in Edinburgh. Froth was just perfect, the coffee was nice and mild. The interior is very welcoming and the service was friendly and warm. Definitely will see me more often here :-)
B.
Great coffee, very tasty rhubarb cake and brownie!
R. M.
Great bacon rolls (nice bun + lots of thin streaky bacon). Great hot chocolate.
Prices seem a bit high but the quality is excellent and I enjoy going here every 3 or so weeks for a treat. Staff are also friendly and service quite quick.
C. L.
Love this plant-based café! Their coffees are lovely, and I had the best cinnamon roll I've ever had. Their sandwiches are a good size and delicious.
A. D.
A beautiful wee place, open after 4pm (unlike so many other independent coffee shops in the UK!). Polite and respectful service, the lady was on her own and extremely busy, so we waited a while for our coffee and cake - BUT! The wait was more than worth it! Beautiful, beautiful coffee, amazing cake. I'd come back for sure.
G. x.
Popped in for the first time today. Great selection of cakes, coffees and teas. The rolls looked great. Need to go back to try them for lunch soon.
L. S. B.
Cozy coffee shop with good foods and aromatic coffee. Great way to kickstart a Monday
H. B.
Fantastic cafe with a totally plant based menu. Food was delicious and the coffee was excellent. Staff were friendly and the environment was spotlessly clean.
G. E.
Nice coffee shop. Good quick service. The sandwiches looked great, will definitely try one on my next visit.
S. S.
Lovely little cafe to grab a bite to eat or relax over a cup of tea. Food is always tasty and staff friendly and polite. Not great for big buggies and no baby changing facilities at all, but considering it's quite a small place can't really complaint.
C. M.
Coffee lovely food was real lovely good selection, staff could not have been more helpful, and fast service 😀
a.
Excellent coffee, sandwiches on display looked delicious as well. I'll need to go back for lunch sometime!
L. C.
Excellent affordable lunch on the go. Delicious (huge) ciabatta! Hadn't been here in about a year and am very pleased to see this place doing so well.
j. w.
Great wee cafe with lovely staff, atmosphere, food and drink

Great drinks and atmosphere. I had a lovely time here working for a bit. The free WiFi was a plus and the music was really groovy (cool jazz and jazz-funk). Definitely give it a try.

F. M.
Excellent vegan food and smoothies. Really good coffee too, and a nice soundtrack of quiet, unobtrusive music.
Dog-friendly.
S. C.
Great coffee with friendly staff. Nice relaxing atmosphere. Cakes and pastries a little on the pricey side. They also offer free wi-fi access.
D. W.
Best Coffeeshop in Edinburgh, amazing daily vegan options and their coffee smoothies are second to none. They also have a student discount available.
M. F.
They have recently gone vegan however the quality of food and cakes is really good. Highly recommended, I just wish they opened until a little bit in the evening!
C. D.
Coffee was second to none, it had an artisan feel. The cafe itself however brought the rating down, although the staff are lovely the level of humidity was uncomfortable, clouding the windows with condensation.
G. W.
Lovely coffee shop serving a good selection at breakfast along with Pannonia, cake and tray bakes through the rest of the day. Friendly staff, good WiFi and great coffee.
V. R.
Lovely for breakfast when visiting on midweek break. Great fresh egg bap and tea. Happy service.
Clean and fresh. Would like to see a phone charging point.
M. E.
Very good bakes, decent coffee. They have books you can borrow for free (or exchange for your own). Zone's quiet... All in all, good place.
