Reviews of Coates Cafe

Stopped off in this little cafe for a drink and cheeky cake. Oh my goodness the cakes and cookies looked amazing so we got one of each. was to die for, tastes absolutely amazing. Hot chocolate was amazing too. Highly recommend 👌😋
J. C.
This bar is really cute and “instagrammable”: it has nice furniture and decorations, amazing coffees and nicely presented dishes.
The only reason why I’m not giving 5 stars is that the table was quite sticky and unfortunately my egg royale was not as expected. A part from the taste itself which can be subjective, the poached eggs were clearly overcooked.
It may have been only a slip, everything else was perfect.

Beautifully designed cafe with fantastic food. However, don't visit when it's crowded as orders will take up to an hour to prepare, I waited 30 min for a piece of sourdough toast. Tried asking the staff if there was an issue with my order and they refused to even look at me. I recommend using a system with table numbers and taking orders on something other than post-its. It's a shame because everything else about the cafe is perfect.

A very pleasant local cafe with great breakfast and brunch options. Airy and spacious which in this day and age is much appreciated.

Lovely cafe with enough space and seats for everyone. The staff is very friendly and you can see they love to make coffee and cakes for you. The interiour is really special and I really loved it. The seats the lights the sofa all has a special touch and you will feel so comfortable when you enter this cafe. The cappuccino was delicious too and I need to mention that the portion is really big compared to other cafes. The almond cake was awesome too and I would eat it again and again. The location is near the haymarket and what I also love is that you can spend alot time here watching from the window. All in all I can recommend this place to everyone and I would definitely come again. Everything is perfect the price the taste the staff and the furniture. I will definitely come again. See you soon

Have a very relaxing breakfast. Chic interior and lay back vibe. Friendly staff. Reasonably priced. Yummy food. Long black is very nice. Will definitely come back again.

Lovely little cafe to stop for a coffee etc.
The coffee was fine but the scones were very dry.
Staff were friendly although the service was a rather slow.
M. H.
Had full breakfast, which wasn’t like 100% good, but the staff was very pleasant and Capuccinos were just super tasty.
D.
Superb flavours and coffee served at perfect temperature rather than too hot to drink immediately. Eggs Benedict came with a flavoursome slightly spicy red sauce which was a surprise. Chickpea pancake was simply incredible and tasted wonderful. Only minor point was the entry to the toilet was like the crystal maze and we failed!
D. M.
Nice coffee ☕, chocolate not my favourite cake, didn't realise it had jam. But still good
D. R.
The eggs and hollandaise dishes are excellent. Coffee is also very good. Only reason for not giving 5 stars is the full breakfast is a bit disappointing. I'd add something with some bite like hash browns or something. Mine was swimming in beans. I'd also say unless you do quality sausages just don't bother with them.

Beautiful, cute cafe.🌿
Good coffee, and the Berry Tart was delicious.☕
Good, quick service.
And lucky me they are pet friendly🐶
I. S.
The best place for breakfast in the area! We went twice and had a full Scottish breakfast with fresh apple juice and cappuccino. Everything was exceptional and the staff very friendly! Highly recommended!
A. B.
I think it was the worst cake I've ate so far 🤣🤣🤣 dry dry dry - but the place it's beautiful
L. F.
The first time we came here I had an amazing English breakfast, honestly one of the best of my entire life. I was very happy with it.
A while ago, I was craving a brunch again and since I was very satisfied with the previous experience here, we decided to come back. Unfortunately this time it was not as good as the first time, the poached eggs with smoked salmon were not that great, the bread wasn't properly toasted and the sauce was not that good.
Although this time it was not great, the staff is always very kind, the atmosphere is very cozy and we really like place. They have a lot of cakes too and we really would like to taste them. Yes, we will come back!
Bad days happen, no problems!
Order a full breakfast and enjoy the moment!
A. K.
Came here with two others and each of us got food and coffee. All three dishes were impeccable. The flavor profiles were rich and complex. I had the poached eggs with goat cheese and WOW - the cheese was cooked and crispy, the bread homemade, the dill and hollandaise perfectly balanced. Best breakfast I’ve had in all of Edinburgh, by far. Great coffee too!
J. L.
Lovely flat white and great selection of baked goods
D. T.
Had the full breakfast and a coffee. Food was fantastic. Coffee really good. Really good value and ample size portions.
A. B.
Best breakfast I've had in my entire life. Everything was superb. I refused to leave without a few cakes to take home with me and will be back to eat here everytime I'm up in Edinburgh!
A. B.
Nice place, light, airy. Staff were friendly but seemed unsure what to do when I returned to question my eggs order, which they had not taken though it says "eggs of choice" on menu entry. Veggie breakfast was excellent but toast was totally stale! Good background soundtrack.
M. T.
Amazingly cozy and fulfilling for a breezy morning in Edinburgh! Generous portions of British morning stables. Fair prizes for good hot meal. The oatmeal bowl is particularly good!
A. A.
Absolutely amazing and underrated! Never been to a place where everything is perfect! Food, coffee & juice that’s what we had and we couldn’t be happier and the prices are reasonable. Definitely recommended!
J. D.
A café with a lovely interior. It is very beautiful with extremely comfortable chairs. The pastries are delicious. However I found the coffee a bit too sour and the staff (although lovely) did not know how to prepare espresso macchiato.
J. B. T.
Wow, best vegetarian brunch I've had in a long time. The pastries were fantastic, too. Very comfortable and cosy cafe, lovely place to chill and enjoy great food.
E. N.
Lovely coffee shop, nice pastries and very pleasant staff. Have been here twice so far.
A. Y.
This was our first visit under new owners and it is a great improvement. Excellent choice of breakfast and good value compared to West Central Edinburgh and so very handy for Waverley Station
J. D.
Amazing food options. Lovely presentation and good food.
J. L.
Heartwarming Welcome to Edinburgh after an exhausting flight! Amazing coffee, homemade pastry and a really friendly waitress in a cosy café.
V. M.
Banana porridge was super good. Comfy breakfast
B. M.
Great coffee and Sam Cooke. You can't say fairer than that.
j. r.
Great service and awesome food. Big fan of the oriental chicken sandwich. And lovely staff.
L. C.
Scrumptious food and lovely fresh home made juice.
J. P.
We got in the cafe because its charming decoration but we ended up having the best breakfast in Edinburgh. We recommend to have the full breakfast, you will even have to skip lunch. The coffee is perfect, good quality and served on the accurate temperature. The staff is very nice and friendly. It is a place I highly recommend in the city.
J. S.
A little pricy but the quality was very good for the food. However a tea bag and hot water for £2.30 is a bit much. Food was lovely.
H. R.
Nice to pop in during the week when quiet but not worth it on busier Saturdays - service not up to scratch. Coffee otherwise good and nice cooked breakfast/brunch options.
K. E.
Fantastic! Wholesome food freshly cooked. Cosy atmosphere, very friendly and attentive staff. Great choice for all tastes. Best decaf coffee ever. Cakes unbelievable. We will be back every time we visit Edinburgh!
M. P.
Super cute cafe with a relaxed atmosphere. Good coffee and amazing homemade cakes 💗
R. K.
Great service and lovely place to go for breakfast. Well priced and i can recommend the Hollandaise eggs, spinach and capers.
S. C.
Called in to this lovely coffee shop on a visit to the city today.
The service was top drawer from the young lady serving, the coffee was perfect hot and nicely roasted, the pastries were so good we had chocolate croissants nicely warmed up and served to us while we relaxed in the comfortable soroundings.
A great place to relax and enjoy a brew 10 out of 10 👍
T. J.
A great little cafe, nice friendly staff. Coffee was nice and tasty, had a ham and cheese croissant and a broccoli soup which was delicious and warmed the soul on this cold day. Best part is the interior with quite a few large comfortable seats. The cost if the meal and coffee was inexpensive compared to other cafes in Edinburgh.
H. S.
Dropped in for brunch on Saturday, great food, great coffee, perfect :)
G.
Lovely cafe with nice ambiance. Loved the soup I ordered for lunch. Will be back. Highly recommended👌
T. K.
Had great pancakes, I'm happy
S. C.
Lovely vegetarian breakfast (shakshuka). Very well presented, very tasty, and quite filling. Coffee was also excellent. There was an extensive selection of very appetising looking cakes and pastries on offer. Not the cheapest, but that seems standard in Edinburgh. The table and chairs and floors weren't the cleanest, but maybe due to the busy Saturday morning rush. Definitely worth a visit.
R. C.
Wonderful cafe great homemade foods and snacks and drinks nice place to sit back and relax
C. W.
Lovely cafe with a great menu selection. Breakfast of poached eggs were perfectly cooked, large portion, very fresh. Staff were friendly and attentive. Would visit again
V. W.
Being from Brazil and knowing real good coffee, I was absolutely blown away by the AMAZINGLY delicious coffee that I got it made by Jacob, he sure knows how to prepare the BEST macchiato in Scotland! Loved every sip, and everything else that hubby & I ordered for our breakfast at this lovely, relaxing cafe, when in Edinburgh , go check it out, you'll be very happy you did!!!
y. w.
Lovely cafe, close to my hotel so I ate here a few times, lovely food, friendly staff, lovely chilled environment 😊
J.
Best almond croissant I've ever had.
Lovely vibe and friendly.
Keep it up.
A.
Excellent
Coffee was very good, fresh and warm. Food was really nice - I had cheese & chorizo panini.
Staff were pleasant and there was a nice comfortable atmosphere around the cafe.
B. H.
Stayed locally and stopped here for breakfast on the first morning, came back every morning it was that great. Food, Coffee, service is brilliant and I will be coming back! (Need more time to try the menu)
J. A.
Friendly staff but not brilliant service. Forgot my order but fortunately remembered my daughter's ps get a better lock on the toilet.
R. H.
Coffee was very smooth blend so really good. But food was all a bit heavy and stodgy. Scones are really heavy. This is of course personal taste. I like light and fluffy baked goods.
A. S.
The place looks cool inside, but probably they were a bit lost with my order: quite slow to get out my order and not exactly as it supposed to be
A. B.
Delicious. Worth a stop. Great coffee, pastries, & breakfast.
J. d. W.
Poched eggs were amazing, also home Made Bread was Really Nice. Altough there was too much Hollandaise sauce on the egg. Loved the smoothies and the way you can choose your own fruit 😍
N. L.
Food and atmosphere was nice, but unfortunately cleanliness could be improved. Sofa I sat on had crumbs on it and water glasses had food stuck on it
A. D.
Friendly service, great pork roll, and dog friendly. Posting this on the free WiFi
M. G.
We tried the cinnamon latte there.. cinnamon is little too much but good though. Ambience and tables were good. Service is friendly .. Good place to drink a coffee and bang out with your friends.
K. K.
We come here regularly for breakfast and have never had a bad experience. The food is fresh and always good quality, and the staff are always friendly and attentive. Brilliant little place!

A lovely cafe and patisserie close to Haymarket Station.
Does good coffee, breakfast, brunch and lunch as as well as baking their own bread and patisserie.
Favourites include their rye loafs, and their creme brûlée topped Apple or peach tart is highly recommended!
S. A.
Dropped in on spec. Lovely surprise. Gorgeous looking food laid out to tempt. We were not disappointed. Wholesome tasty food, lovely staff ... def a keeper
T. K.
If you love plants, architecture, reclaimed wood, birdsong and friendly service this cafe is a must. My new favourite cafe!
F. L.
Best flat white and chocolate brownie in Edinburgh... And I've had a few!
H. W.
Food quality is good. Prices are ok. Two remarks: food on my plate was a bit too cold and the interior was way too cold to have a comfortable breakfast.
p. s.
Visited over Christmas, staff were very helpful and food & drink was excellent. A good range of savory and sweet food as well as vegetarian and non-vegetarian.
B. W.
Evening at the Ritz Carlton on
a stroll around the city, can honestly state this wee cafe offered better service and tastier snacks, all be it
the moussaka came with a vast salad which was delish, but just couldn't finish. Worth a visit.
M. R.
Wonderful like always
P. J.
Really good cup of coffee but service was incredibly slow on this visit. I would go back for the coffee though if you want to avoid the chain brands.
N. B.
Great relaxed cafe. Always chocolate croissants to finish
