Reviews of Hideout Cafe

Hard not too love the Hideout. Food is always as unique as it is delicious, serving classic dishes with simple, but effective twists. Service is always friendly, the delivery speedy and the price reasonable. If you're looking for a breakfast spot in Leith, this place is a must.
M. S.
Gorgeous from the outside, interesting and charming on the inside. Great space, lovely staff, delish food. Don't let the extensive raod construction put you off.
Y. K.
Bap with cheese, hash browns and egg - tasty. Lost a star because I found a hair in my coffee, which happens and they did offer to replace or refund when I complained. Star lost because the waitress arrived with my food as I discovered the hair and was pulling it out of my mouth and she decided to pretend it wasn't happening.
Y. B.
Best coffee ever, such a cozy and lovely place! Been there during my visit to Edinburgh and I just can't wait to come back after Corona.
Is there any possibility I can order the coffee beans to Germany? Bought some packages from you but they didn't last us more than few weeks. XX from the Northsea's shores in Germany, Bianca
A. K.
Really cool digital nomad-friendly cafe. Porridge and falafel salad were also great.
G. G.
Amazing breakfast!!! Vege haggis and avocado toast! hot chocolate and delicious rose and pistachio cake.
C. C.
Very wonderful staff, the cafe has the greatest vibe, and we can’t recommend the waffles enough.
S. C.
Decent selection of gluten free options. Their salted caramel brownie was delicious!
P. W.
Really good range of coffee and interesting menu items. The service was very quick and the staff very attentive.
The music is also very good.
S. C.
Very nice, bright interier with a vintage design. We found on our way from Leith and we really enjoy inside design of the Cafe. Nice, friendly atmosphere and coffe is great, it looks and taste amazing.
We didn't order any food but they have a nice choice of modern sourbread sendwiches and they look amazing.
K. T.
This hidden gem is amazing. The staff was amazing, the coffee ( vanilla latte) just incredible. This is a must visit on your way to the castle!
J. K.
This is the first little cafe we tried on our weekend getaway in Scotland. I'm glad we did as the staff was super friendly, let us charge our phones with a cable they supplied (we forgot ours).
The decor was fun and exciting, with one entire wall devoted to a range of retro cassette players. One such cassette player was the perfect device to fill the space with enough background music to make the cafe welcoming and comfortable.
Hideout Cafe should get 5* but my wife didn't think the coffee was that great. The roast was definitely intense, but she seemed to think it was on the burnt side. I like a strong, dark roast and was pleased with my flat white, no complaints, but I can see how maybe somebody who wants a silky smooth drip, might not find that here. The breakfast was basic, but the generous portions made up for lack of finesse.
C. G. N.
Amazing wee coffee place, with vintage decoration, good price, friendly staff and very close to The Shore. Wide selection of teas, coffees and sandwich / cakes. 100% recommended.
j.
This is a really nice cafe. The staff are very friendly and great at upholding the Covid-19 regulations and requirements.
I had the poached eggs and bacon - it was so good I wished there was more of it!
Attached is a picture of the menu at the moment - go and support local businesses such as this one.
S. D.
What a great café! Lovely staff, great coffee (they know their business) and tasty cakes. The room, mugs, inventory etc. is very vintage what makes this café even more attractive and special.
L. M.
Love sitting there, listening to the cassettes and enjoying the lovely natural light. The food was great and coffee delish. The service was nice and everyone had a feel good attitude.
J. R.
Went for something to eat but was too late as they stopped serving food at 3 o'clock. Instead had latte and a moccachino and a big piece of carrot cake was so good. Nick was friendly and chatty. Will go back next time for something to eat. Highly recommend!! 👍
C. N.
A very cosy establishment with very fun throwback decor. The service was good.
I had one of their smoothies, freshly made and delicious, accompanied by one of their sandwiches -salami and cheese-.
While it all came to about £9, i think the sandwich was a bit deer, but could have been made worth it with a small side of crisps.
A. M. K.
Lovely cafe serving the most delicious food and a mocha which does not taste of sugar. Much recommended
H. S.
What a fab place! It's like a secret gem in the city ✨ If you want some magic and like music, you'll love the atmosphere and interior with all the vintage music equipment that is still in use 💖
And the coffee is mind blowing, so so good 🏅🎉
K. I.
Tasty coffee, lovely interior and the barista was very nice. I'll visit again.
N. S.
Wonderful spot! Bright yet cozy with soft music so it's easy to chat. Great tea and food! We had the smoked salmon sandwich, goat cheese and pear salad, and Rose & pistacio cake - all were excellent. Highly recommended!
B.
A regular haunt for me. My favourite hot chocolate in Edinburgh (simple and delicious). Great range of food; sandwiches on lovely sourdough, tasty soup, wraps, cakes etc. Good coffee and tea selection. Friendly, casual café with lovely staff.
C. L.
Honestly one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. And trust me, I travel the country for work in and out of cafes all the time. Well worth the visit, well worth the money 👌👌
I. M.
Wow! Lovely little coffee shop with superb food! Do try the homemade soup and the sourdough bread with black pudding, poached eggs & hollandaise sauce!
s.
Amazing breakfast....friendly service ....unique place
A. D.
Delicious food. Lots to try and reasonable for the quality.
S. B.
We booked so we didn't have to wait - the waiter kindly secured us a table at the window. The menu was good - we opted for bacon rolls, soup, sourdough with avocado and waffles. Everything was delicious. Nice coffee and cake afterwards too. There's a nice local, friendly feel to the cafe. Great location on the corner. Will definitely recommend.
B. H.
Beautiful amd cozy cfe located just off the shore with good bus links going to the city. Their coffee ks amazing with all their home baked goodies. Highly recommended
S. M.
Delicious vegan cake and a selection of oat, almond and soy milks for coffee. A really cute find!
T. J.
A good menu, great variety, something for everyone! Lovely portions. Very comfortable. Friendly staff and good service.
P. O.
Relaxed atmosphere, friendly service ... excellent, intense Americano. Decent breakfast rolls. Importantly 🐶 welcome
C. M.
Fabulous cafe with the most amazing brunch menu....we have sourdough with veg haggis and poached eggs, and sourdough with black pudding and poached eggs, half each!! Amazing!! So clean, lovely staff.
M. G.
Lovely wee cozy cafe. Tasty food, fabulous cakes (especially the rose and pistachios sponge ❤️) and lovely staff
D. V. (.
Excellent coffee and breakfast roll comfortable location to relax
A. D.
Food was delicious, service staff very friendly. Very lovely place to read a book or spend time with friends.
A. K.
First time visiting this place and absolutely loved it. ❤
Its a wee place just in the corner next to a police station, this is why its called the hideout.
Prices are really good, without lowering the quality of the products. They have plenty of stuff if you are hungry, without lowering the quality.
Its a small neighbourhood coffeshop that you should visit, if you are in Edinburgh.
f. A.
Very, very delicious sandwiches, breakfasts and soups but very very overpriced for what it is.. a cafe! You can easily end up more than £20 for 2 people having a snack.
Coffees are not this place's strongest selling point as they are consistently below average with sometimes undesirable side notes (from the machine or the beans in combination with maybe inexperienced coffee makers), but all that doesn't matter when you taste their food! Thank you!
J. A.
Like this place, they make a great chai latte, the cakes / pastries are good, the food is also very nice with great bread. Customer service is friendly but not annoying. They allow dogs in too, but usually only see one at a time when i have visited. Recommended.
R. K.
One of our favourite cafes in Leith. Great customer service and consistently great food available. Their cakes are also delicious!
K. B.
Great coffee
K.
Often they make and offer a vast choice of Gluten Free homemade stuff. They also have lots of alternatives to milk. Really friendly. Love their cakes and Sandwiches. Go every few days.
C. L.
I'm a big fan of The Hideout. The staff and owner have a fantastic attitude to customers and are always welcoming and friendly. The coffee is delicious and I usually end up having one of the cakes which is always also good. The decor is charming and the atmosphere is relaxing. There are papers to read whilst having a coffee. Overall, it's a winner.
S. W.
A great find lovely quirky establishment, delicious food and drink, will visit again
J. L.
Incredible Cafe. Good gluten free options including toast for sandwiches. Great coffee, strong yet balanced with nut and grain notes. Banana bread is delicious, as is avocado on toast with scrambled eggs for breakfast. Yum!
G. R.
Small but very friendly with great tea and coffee. Good, interested staff. Loyalty scheme quite generous. Had leaflets from one political party this week. I hope they will have a range as I don't support that particular party and I hope they will not assume all their customers do. I will raise it next time and if they don't change thus I won't go back. We will c!
B. K.
lovely little cafe, cosy, friendly service. some might a little pricey, bit you pay for what you get, and the food is fresh and good quality. fab brownies.
K. C.
Amazing gem of a place . Recommend grilled sandwiches .
D. B. M.
Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, DOG FRIENDLY, wifi, felt like I could sit an hr and not be rushed. Relaxing place.
N. C.
My favourite place to eat and grab a coffee in Leith. The food is amazing and the staff are wonderful ❤
H. M.
Really nice place but I wasn't too sure about the heated up scones. They tasted great but I think I prefer my scones cooler. Very friendly staff and interesting decor.
M. N.
Lovely cafe with good coffee and cakes. Froendly service.
A. B.
One of our favorite places to go for breakfast/lunch. The food is simple and tastes great. Atmosphere is relaxed and the music comming from a cassette player adds to the great vibe. Highly recommend!
D. F. (.
Looks pretencious from the outside, but it's actually a decent Cafe. The big windows make it feel bright & open when you're sitting inside. The guy who served us was also kind & welcoming. However, the most important thing was that the coffee was good.
W. C.
Reasonably priced, delicious food made by staff who obviously care. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend for breakfast, light lunch or a coffee. Great quirky interior too without a hint of pretense. Nailed it!
R. G.
I love the Hideout Cafe, but you might not. You know what, best not try. You probably won't like the tasty coffee, or the avocado and scrambled eggs on toast, or the relaxed cozy decor or the uber cool tape cassette player. And you'll especially not like the seat in the window with the view of the intersection. Best not try it and leave me and my favourite hideaway in peace.
L. S.
Cute cafe in Leith! This cafe has some character with the old stereos on display and plenty of seating. I ordered a chai latte and my hubby, an Americano. I got the avocado egg on toast and he got a much yummier chicken avocado wrap. I'd have rated higher had my bacon not been missed and the design on my second latte been a dollop of a mess! They also assumed I'd like a regular size, which was too small and why I got a another in large! Great little place with good service. It appears to be busy on a weekend but is a quaint spot to meet up with friends or do a bit of work.
Update :
I've been back and we had some fresh juices. Mine was apple/pear. The size was quite small and so-so (not spectacular). There are a couple outdoor tables and it was nice to some get fresh air! It would have otherwise been like an oven inside sitting my the windows! Won't knock any stars until I've sampled more food! Staff seem friendly and check on you quickly.
B.
Nice place. Cheerful service and their coffee was really nice. I'm not sure why those simple qualities are hard to find these days but the hideout cafe definitely has then.
S. K.
What an excellent little café tucked away in a side street of Leith. Very popular - we were lucky to get a seat but well worth the trip. Friendly service and delicious food - I would recommend the avacado on artisan bread with scrambled eggs. They also have evilly delicious bakery goods (try to resist the cinammon knot - impossible). Funky decor completes this delightful place. I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.
E. T.
Nice decor and atmosphere with good coffee. The big let down were the cakes, two different types were dry, powdery and not very nice. A real shame as its a nice place.
A. C.
Lovely cafe with a quiet atmosphere. Menu has a good selection of food, tea and cakes. Very fairly priced. Staff were really friendly!
D. D.
What a great cafe. Quirky, local, fantastic beverages and cakes in a fun setting. You can tell the owners care about their customers.
What more do you want?
C. R.
Top marks for a perfect bacon roll and a lovely bit of chocolate brownie. Quirky decor and all that, but they don't mess about with the food. Seems to be popular with dog owners on a Saturday morning.
A. A.
Very nice breakfast.
T. S.
Nice food. BLT sandwich was great. Coffee is a little cold though and could be served a bit hotter. Not a major issue maybe just a personal preference.
R. M.
Good food, nice coffee, good value
d.
Great coffee and service and good portion of tasty treats 🥐💝
F. W.
Great location. Great service. Great coffee and brunch. Really stands it’s ground in a very competitive upcoming area in Edinburgh. Will definitely revisit.
B. B.
Highly recommend to hop in for some coffee and food. The place is a nod to pre-hightech times and it shows in every detail that they care about both the history of the area and the people who visit in modern times.
On top of that they know their craft very well. You'll have an amazing time.
S. E.
I was drawn by the fabulous array of ghetto blasters in the window! Inside, the 80s hardware theme is continued: an old tv set has been gutted and is now storage to to an array of cassettes. I spotted The Stranglers and INXS.
I stopped briefly for a breakfast to beef me up for the day ahead and my bacon and egg buttie along with a restorative Jackie Chan smoothie (see pic) was just what the doctor ordered.
Speedy service, quirky decor and smiley staff make this a lovely little cafe. I would have been back on my final day in Edinburgh too but sadly it doesn't open until 10am on Sundays. Even cafe owners need a lay in from time-to-time!
Well worth visiting.
B. B.
Good service, nice food, decent coffee. Nice little place to chill for a while.
R. C.
This is a lovely little cafe , which does a great coffee and also a range of sweet treats available, well worth a visit if around Leith Links area .
F. R.
Absolutely amazing wee cafe. Coffee and sandwich were delicious and the atmosphere in the cafe was so relaxing. Staff were very pleasant and I will definitely be back for more!
K. O.
Cute café friendly staff and dogs are welcome! The brownies are not the best but I know I'm a picky brownie eater. The tea was rich and enough for the price!
M. d. J.
Hit or miss. Went here twice- first time was perfect, 5 star coffee and wraps. Second time the sandwiches were mediocre and there was little to no difference between our latte and cappuccino.
M. S.
Very cute little place. Nice menu and friendly staff
t. g. r. c.
Nice wee cafè, nice polite staff, nice breakfast, little expensive but overall a nice place.
C. L.
Excellent food with a good range of different options. The cafe itself is very interestingly decorated making it worth a visit for that alone. They have lots of gluten free options as well.
A. S.
Delicious food.
Top quality smoothies.
People happy to serve you.
Highly recommended.
Y. A.
Lovely coffee, carrot cake to die for and friendly atmosphere. Will be visiting again.
Second visit, once again best latte in Edinburgh with amazing cakes and lovely vibes.
J. T.
I like the decor. Had the toasted falafel & hummus wrap (which came with a salad) with a mocha. The wrap was nice, but I've had better mochas. I think I'll stick to their teas in the future.
K. M.
Lovely wee place, staff are super friendly. Had awesome soup, curried carrot and coriander- super tasty. And great coffee too, xx
J.
Amazing coffee and pastries. Now is only take away for Covid-19. But is dog friendly
S. M.
Gorgeous wee quirky cafe in the heart of Leith. They serve excellent coffee made from well-sourced beans, and their cakes are absolutely divine.
J. A.
A hidden gem in the Edinburgh Coffee scene. Great decor, quick and friendly service, amazing cakes and even a small selection of food and soups.
Always worth a visit, be it for a quick java hit, or a long lazy sunday chill session
L. M.
Lots of gluten free and vegetarian/vegan lunch and breakfast options. Artisan Roast coffee and GF cake also available with great service. Recommended.
M. H.
Bit pricey for food but great for dietary requirements. The coffee is amazing! Lovely bright atmosphere and friendly staff.
T. H.
Jeremy had his serious face on, as he always did when working on his laptop. At least Amelia assumed he was working. They always came here to work. But for the past 3 weeks Jeremy had been playing solitary and praying that one of the lines he'd cast out would catch him a big fat juicy job. Good thing this chicken and avacado wrap was so very delicious. Even unemployment was tolerable with food this good.
H. D.
Great food and coffee. Carrot cake amazing though I think they recently changed the recipe.
R. M.
Best coffee I’ve ever had ! Great service too.
A. B.

2022 Update; star upgrade as the quality of the food is much improved. It wasn't bad before, it was good, but now it's better. Menu larger too.
I was really pleased to see The Hideout Café arrive on the corner of Charlotte Street and Constitution Street. The location looked like a good one, a corner of a busy intersection and not too far from Leith Links at all but for as long as I had lived in the area the building had been left empty and was approach ruin.
The Hideaway Café swept in, tided the place up and transformed the corner spot into the sweet little nook it should be.
The big attraction of the Hideaway Café is the opposite of what you might expect. The Hideaway is actually a fantastic lookout spot. It has huge windows which are easy to sit near. If you’ve got the time you can sit, drink your tea and watch busy Leith go by.
While the tables aren’t huge and the seats are mainly those old wooden frame jobs the café is actually quite cosy. It would be a tempting place to go sit and read for a bit (and some people do) but it gets a little too busy for me.
While The Hideout Café as a fair range of drinks at sensible prices I find the food menu keeps me from coming back more often. The menu updates every day but isn’t very large. I can’t head out of work, aiming to have lunch at the Café, confident in the knowledge I’ll find something there I’d want to eat. Once we sat down at a table, just after 12, picked something from the blackboard menu only to watch as it was wiped clean and updated with less appetising food. On that occasion we had to abandon the visit and go elsewhere.
“Elsewhere” is a problem for café as although it has a nice spot it is just across the road from the Compass which is very good for food and just up the road from Printworks Coffee and Rocksalt. I think those two alternatives catch more of the workers drifting up from the Shore for a breakfast or lunch. On the flip that, that helps to ensure the Hideaway isn’t overly packed too often (as can sometimes happen at Rocksalt).
There’s a touch of “lifestyle café” to the Hideout but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It’s not my favourite venue in the area but it’s certainly a consideration.
[June 22 - Place keeps getting better. I noticed it has no shortage of regulars.]

(Translated) Just great here. Nice atmosphere between old tapes and tape recorder, already quaint, it still exists here. Very nice and attentive service. Had a sandwich with salad, fresh and very tasty. Was from multigrain bread, definitely try. Like the freshly pressed smoothie.

Einfach toll hier.

(Translated) Very nice little cafe, prices have increased a bit recently but the decor and atmosphere are worth it and the cost. The soup of the day is often great with good fresh bread. In short, a perfect spot to eat on the go and work in peace.

Petit café très sympa, les prix ont un peu augmenté récemment mais la déco et l'ambiance valent le coup et le coût. La soupe du jour est souvent top avec du bon pain frais. Bref un spot parfait pour manger sur le pouce et travailler au calme.
