Reviews of Italian on the Mound cafe

Authentic pastries, legendary sandwiches, a wholesome family-run cafe. I can't pass through Edinburgh without getting that No.9 sandwich!
S.
I traveled to Edinburgh for a small trip with a group of friends back in late June 2021. I asked for a New York Pastrami Ciabatta and Mocha and I haven't been able to stop thinking about the ciabatta. The gentleman behind the counter gave my friends and I excellent service and was overall very friendly. If ever I'm back in Edinburgh again I'll be sure to visit again and enjoy more of the cafe, hopefully the weather will be more inviting. 5/5.

A cracking wee place. The food and service here are both great and the atmosphere is welcoming. Some stuff is pre-prepared whilst some is made up in order. The signature sandwich, the Legendary No. 9, is fantastic and comes in a few variations, mostly based in how much heat you can handle - I recommend the Triple 9, if you dare! The pasta dishes and pastries are also great.
Vegetarian options are available too.
When it's busy there can be a bit if a wait, but it's worth it. There is only limited seating, so mostly takeaway.
This was not my first visit, and it will not be my last, highly recommend.

In response to the review before mine, completely untrue! I was visiting Italian on the Mound as I had heard great things, and was enjoying my number 9 when this ‘rude incident’ happened. These girls were sat directly on the owner’s window (waiting for their drinks from the shop next door) having no interest in what IOTM were selling and blocking the view of the shop. The owner was very polite about asking them to queue by the fence instead - I heard everything! Sounds like someone doesn’t like being told what to do and a had a very big ego! Nonetheless, the staff were very accommodating and the coffee and food are incredible! Can’t wait to visit again!

Found this place randomly wandering on our honeymoon and it's perfect. The coffee is excellent and the food is spot on, a true taste of Italian patisserie in Edinburgh.

Great little find in Edinburgh today, the Italian desserts on show in the window were to enticing..
Called in to try a couple and walked out with the greatest tasting arancini. Which was ham and bechamel truely to die for..a visit here is a must and I know I will visiting again.
Great service, nice staff and good prices! Just wish I tried the coffee.

The coffee was very nice. The staff made this place worthwhile, very friendly and kind. The dessert options are nice as well. Well priced, great place to get coffee on the go.

Amazing sweets and the gentlemen serving us were an absolute delight to chat with - 10/10 experience!

The number 9 baguette is banging, breakfast with a kick with great coffee and friendly owners

The food was simply out of this world. The staff were so nice and were so helpful to recommend the arancini, which were so delicious. The cannoli were so creamy, delicate and perfect, not to forget the pizza which were so tasty. A 5 out of 5 review.

Pasta dishes were amazing. They went out of their way to make up a customised fresh one for me.

Amazing food! You’ve got to get the number 9 - spicy chicken baguette! And their ragu arancini is so yummy! 100% recommend!

Any visit to Edinburgh isn't complete without a lunch at Italian on the Mound! I'd really recommend the No.9 sandwich! Sweet and smoking (with a bit of chorizo) is enough to get anyone through their afternoon 😉🥵

While visiting the Edinburgh Castle, we tried this small cafe. Barely 4 people can sit here, but the food is simply amazing. We had the sun-dried tomato and olive pizza which was very fresh. Millionaire shortbread is to die for, and a cup of cappuccino will be just the way you like it!! Highly recommended place..

My partner visited Italian on the mound today to purchase a box of Cannoli & Sfogliatella. He told me he was met with a friendly smile & a warm welcome & had a lovely chat with the staff. He also told me he explained to the staff he was purchasing them as I had always wanted to try those pastries, so the staff member replied he was hoping the pastries would live up to my expectations, they were amazing, perfect & beautiful. I hope they don't mind us coming back every now & then & getting more.

I’ve thought about this place at least monthly since March 2019 and I pray the day I can return comes sooner. The best cannolis I’ve ever had in my life. My friend and I reminisce about this place and the delicious baked goods all the time.

I’ve been to many cafes in my life, but THIS ONE is something special. Authentic beautiful Italian foods which are such a delight to eat!!!
Customer server absolutely amazing. 10/10 would suggest going to for lunch you won’t be disappointed. I believe this could be my favourite caffe in the whole East coast.

Glad I found this place as a tradesman I've tried alot of cafes for lunch and have to say this is by far the best coffee I've had and a great baguette. The owners very accommodating and always got great banter. Keep up the good work 😀

It was the first time I visited this place and I gotta say it is the best takeaway for anyone who wanna hang around and whoever is looking for a takeaway to enjoy their time and have a wonderful day.I ordered Hot Chocolate and it was the first time I enjoyed and felt how a Hot Chocolate really tastes.

Saw a guy on the High Street eating a delicious-looking sandwich, asked him where he got it and was directed here. Awesome flat bread and great service. This sandwich was made with love. Wish I didn't live thousands of miles away or I'd try one of those famous #9s right now :D

A friendly place where I just popped in for a desert treat after walking by their very tempting window display. Overall good experience however the cannoli filling was more like frosting and a bit cloying. Other treats we had were very good.

Just bought Sfogliatella from this deli. It caught my eye while walking past and brought back memories of Naples and the Amalfi coast. Man, when eating it, it took me back. Very nice Deli, and very tasty confectionary. Definitely worth a visit when in the city.

This is one of my favourite work lunch haunts - although I pretty much always have the same thing - a baguette no. 9 - smokin!
A family run Italian cafe - sometimes the wait can be pest but it's always worthwhile.
As well as baguettes, wraps and rolls there is always soup and also a pasta dish.
Takeaway recommended.

Best Italian coffee in the city. The legendary #9 sandwich is worth a visit in itself. Mama and Stefano are genuine legends
M. W.
Family run, friendly banter and great food. Pick a number from a board full of suggestions on freshly made baguettes, ciabatta, focaccia, wraps, bagels... or create your own. There's also salad, two daily soup options, two daily pasta options and an assortment of other freshly prepared surprises. Very good coffee to round it off. It can get busy at times but that's surely a good sign! It would be remiss of me to not mention a certain #9 baguette but I'll let you discover the magic yourself.

Nice food, amazing customer service and the best coffee in the world.

Very tasty cannoli, especially the tiramisu and the pistachio one! Will be back for more soon :)
A. M.
Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli. The cannoli is really good. So is the Arancini. Definitely worth a quick pit-stop.

Simply the best sandwich shop. We’ve been coming here for 20 years. And the proprietors are truly wonderful people. I’d rather be here for lunch than any place in the world.— and I live across the pond!

Couldn’t recommend more for something quick and easy and delicious. Beautiful desserts, simple but flavoursome savoury rolls and very lovely staff.
