Reviews of Passey's Cafe Bar & Bistro
A. G.
Passey's is a reason to visit Portobello.
Tip: The bistro is often fully booked and so I recognize booking ahead for any celebration.
There's no question what a friendly and welcoming place Passey's is. The rainbow flag outside is a clear indication of that. I found the venue when people kept pulling that very flag down and I wanted to show my support. Karma must be a thing because my near token gesture revealed to me one of my favourite places to eat in Edinburgh.
For me, it's a 90 walk, one way, to Passey's. It's worth it but the friendly welcome, knowing there's a comfortable chair, at a clean table, in a warm and relaxed indie restaurant is all the more important.
But, it's the food that keeps me walking back.
Tip: Check and be thoroughly tempted by the Specials board.
I've never had less than a five star meal here.
British food, Asian, Cajun, etc, etc, Passey's has a rotating menu and an impressive range. The portions are always generous even if nothing fills my stomach void.
Dessert, I'm sure, will tempt everyone too (stomachs voids or not) because it looks great and the taste lives up to it.
The wee restaurant off the high street is open fairly late too.
Tip: Try the coffee. I've bought literal bags of their beans.

Perfect Sunday lunch. Warm welcome. Lovely Cold Town lager. The roast beef was great but special shout out to the sage balls and yorkies 😋. Finished off with honeycomb and salted carmel cheesecake.

Pros: Friendly service, cozy quirky environment, good prices, big portions
Cons: Food is good but there is room for improvement
We ordered a chocolate cake which was huge but a bit too sweet.
Also ordered a soup which was a huge portion with a generous amount of bread! The spicy veggie soup was good but had too much tomato, very similar to a tomato soup, which overpowered the other flavours.
Definitely room for improvement but I would come again especially because I loved the cozy cafe style!

Great welcome, friendly staff and great food.
I have ordered the Cesar salad and I asked some Mayo just in case the chicken would have been dry.
I was totally wrong, chicken was perfectly cooked and the salad was the best I had in years, generous portions too!
I had a sneaky look on the table next to mine and the Sunday roast it was looking very appealing!
You should give it a try also coffee was good which is a rare find!

Highly recommended. My boyfriend and I visited for the first time this evening, and thoroughly enjoyed the Wednesday evening curry deal. We were made welcome and looked after by a friendly long-haired young man initially, and when his shift ended, a charming young woman called Lesley took over. Both were excellent and we were introduced to owner Gary too. We just
moved to Portobello and after a faultless
experience tonight I'm sure well soon become regulars.

This was such a lovely bistro that it was the only place we ate throughout our stay in Portabello, Edinburgh. The food was excellent. The staff extremely friendly, welcoming and the service was first class. Small but with a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Cannot recommend this eating place highly enough. Thank you to all the staff and compliments to the cook.

It was little costly I felt. Ordered veg burger I felt little odd taste. My wife orders steak she enjoyed the steak and drink.

First visit here. - Excellent service and tasty food. Lovely fresh coffee. If we find ourselves in the area again we will definately pop back.

Really great and tasty food, well prepared and good range of options, including veggie and vegan. For me, Wagyu burgers were excellent! A good range of cocktails (done well!) and the wine selection is also very good. The excellent and friendly service from Leslie made the whole evening a pleasure. Highly recommended, and worth going out of your way to visit.

My friend Jacquie and I have just had the most fabulous afternoon tea here. Our fussy needs catered for without question, and beautifully presented. We were served by Natalie who was very attentive and so friendly. Thank you so much to all the staff involved in making this a special occasion. We look forward to seeing you all again next month.

Went in this little place and had a great meal. Lovely soup of the day and steak pie with mash and veggies. One little criticism could have done with a little gravy for the mash. I'm sure if I had asked they would have abilged.
Lovely staff who were extremely attentive and happy. Lots of laughter in the background. Thanks guys

Cam to Portobello for the 1st time and have now eaten there 2 days running. Good food, good company and a lot of laughs. A home from home, relaxed and made to feel like like we are here every night. Food is good staff and owners warm and friendly highly recommended.

Best homemade nachos ever!! Friendly atmosphere and local food! Strongly recommended!

Great lunch here - we had Mac and cheese and king prawn and chorizo linguine; good size portions and served steaming hot!
Coffee were delicious and hot. Try it!

We loved it - interior, staff and food all excellent. Had hot chocolates and gluten free cakes. So tasty I had to fight my boyfriend off eating my half of the cakes. I cannot eat a number of things and they were very careful about this getting the chef to chat me thru options. All made on site too. Looking forward to booking in for their Sunday roast dinner lunch next. Book to ensure you get in. We were lucky as someone was about to leave but has looked busy whenever I walked past. A superb and very welcome addition to Portobello. Good food prices too for the area.
J. L.
Amazing place with lovely food ambient and staff.
M. T.
Have just enjoyed Passey's steak night. Great food, fantastic value and lovely staff. Thoroughly recommend
M. W.
Timed it perfectly on New Year's Day and got a table. Staff were great at accommodating 6 of us without a booking.
J. S.
The best coffee in Portobello with lovely staff and welcoming decor. The food is delicious and the curry and steak nights are especially good value. Veggie and vegan options good. Love it!
J. H.
Lovely Christmas meal with friends. Food tasty and service was amazing.
R. F.
Lovely meal friendly staff good service. I would recommend, only suggestion would be is to have specials board to go with the curry and steak nights
C. W.
Six out of five from start to finish! We felt so welcomed, delicious food and coffee, great wine, very relaxed vibe. We will be back.

I choose a full breakfast..I think it was cooked in an air fryer
As bacon, sausage, square sausage, black pudding and haggis were dry and hard and very salty.. Sadly I did not enjoy the meal.
S. G.
Nice restaurant with very good food. Staff are attentive but, not obtrusive. Highly recommended.
S. L.
Excellent food and brilliant service staff cannot do enough for you. Excellent value.

Best steak I've had in a long time. Brilliant service and lovely atmosphere.

This is a lovely little local bistro - decor is quirky and current, good friendly vibe and busy which is always a good sign. Upon arriving the 2 waiters were lovely, welcoming and instantly made you feel like you belonged - perfect for a local eatery. We opted for the beef and the nut roast. Sadly the food wasn't brilliant. The beef was tuff and the nut roast soggy and tasted strange. That said, the veg was lovely, the veggie gravy super tasty.
The 2 welcoming waiters left half way through service resulting in a drop in service standards - it all became pretty basic after that with us having to ask to see the dessert menu ( even though it was a set menu ). We ordered the biscoff cheesecake and plum tart. The cheesecake was good but the tart soggy both the crumble top and pastry bottom - I was told this wasn't warmed in a microwave but definitely had that look about it - in taste this was fine.
Coffees were good - strong and flavoursome.
I wanted this to be so much more than what we experienced - I would definitely go back for coffee/cake ( they had some interesting options on display) but not sure re the meal.
The man serving us towards the end of the meal told us he had only started a couple of weeks ago and hadn't tried the food yet - I guess there's potential for things to improve. Everybody/where deserves a second chance....

Yet another fabulous meal again tonight at Passey’s. Mac and Cheese so filling and delicious. Husband had Wagyu burger and he said it was delicious! Great service as always. We will definitely be back, fancy the Curry or Steak night!
S. C.
Fab curry night on Wednesdays. I had a beef madras and Cathy a chicken korma. All that plus a bottle of Rose for £30. Great taste and value. Relaxing vibe. Thank you Nick.
E. a. B.
So glad we found this place. Had fantastic meals here during our stay.

Came here on a recommendation from a friend, we were not disappointed. Excellent lunch and drinks but for us the it was the staff that made this experience a 5 *
You guys are worth your weight in gold!
D. K.

After attending a local production in Portobello Church, we wandered along to find somewhere to eat. We thought we'd try Passey's. They didn't disappoint. Great service, lovely food and ambience just right! I shall return again. Thank you!
L. M.
Been for 2 steak night.. Really enjoyed my experience and decent prices
C. B.
Great find and the Thursday steak night is definitely worth a try

I try to get a table every time we visit Edinburgh. Found this great place by chance and love visiting when we travel up as the food is excellent, service excellent and the staff always welcome you
L. M. (.
Food was really very good, but was quite shocked that we ordered what was a pricey starter to receive a bit of a pretentious portion of food (was tiny). Seems marketing themselves as an upscale cafe crossed with an upscale restaurant with upscale restaurant prices / portions. Bit confusing. However service excellent and food excellent. Really good atmosphere also. Would give 4.5 if could.
J. S.
Amazing food and amazing service. I had asked for Gherkins for my burger which they didn't have in the kitchen but they went out and got some just for me. Really went the extra mile to satisfy their customers.
L. B.
I enjoyed a coffee and carrot cake. Loved the atmosphere and quirkyness of the place. Would recommend this cafe & Bistro as you can not only get coffe but a glass of wine.
A.
Really beautiful interior and lovely friendly staff, but sadly didn’t deliver on the food and drink front.
If you’re going to call your new venture a ‘coffee company’, please look at sourcing coffee from one of the amazing roasters based in the city, because the coffee wasn’t particularly nice to drink.
I got a scone, which came out of the kitchen with the jam and butter already on, served as a sandwich. Sadly, eaten this way it was really dry and needed more of both. I would have preferred to be brought butter and jam to put on my own scone really.
I saw the breakfast rolls other people were having, which were the only option before 11am. Just plain white breadrolls, with bacon or sausage. Not really an ideal brunch option.
It seems the owners had a really clear vision of how they wanted the space to look, but all the creativity and attention to detail stopped there.
M. M.
Great place to have just on my door step, food really good, had breakfast and evening meals here, staff are really good and very friendly, lovely place, always worth a visit if in portobello, you will not be disappointed

We could not have asked for a better or more enjoyable afternoon passing the time at Passey’s. Nick was great and made us feel like we were guests in his home. Although, I may be related to the namesake of this establishment (probably distantly 😃) my review here would be no different, either way. It was a highlight of our visit to Edinburgh (and Scotland generally).
