Reviews of Piecebox
K. M.
Cozy dog-friendly café with various vegan and gluten free options. Menu with traditional and original dishes. Prices average for Edinburgh centre. We recommend the sweet potato and courgette fritters with sweet chili dressing and satay sauce. The vegan breakfast is tasty and very filling. Had a lovely vegan/gluten free cake with mango lime and berries just a tad too dry. A very nice experience.

We visited Edinburgh for 3 days and we had breakfast here twice!! The owner is lovely and let us come in at 9am, even if they open at 10am! Food is so delicious and the atmosphere is cosy and relaxed. I couldn't recommend this place more.

Popped in for a brunch, around 11.30am..
By the time we ordered drinks, the restaurant filled up very quickly.
Mostly locals, although various other accents from tourists could be heard.
The menu was very good and catered for vegetarian and vegan, as well as steak and chicken favorites.
Good selection of smoothies and milkshakes too.
The staff were very helpful on food choices.
We left with scrumptious home bakes.
Worth another visit..spoiled for choice with the menu.
J. B.
Really nice space with a big menu, plenty of vegetarian/vegan/gluten free options too. Friendly staff and a little in the pricey side, but the food is quality. I had the vegetarian full breakfast which was superb. One of our party had an undercooked egg and the place is a bit cramped, so it loses a star for that, but on the whole very good!

Piecebox is the perfect place for breakfast, brunch and lunch! It has it all! From great granola and Scottish breakfast to chicken flatbread and club sandwich. The soup of the day is also yummy and the homemade deserts just amazing! Smoothies and loose tea really great. Staff always super nice and helpful. We have been going there with our daughter since she was 6 months old and it's very child friendly.

This is genuinely my favourite all-rounder cafe to go to. The food and cakes are especially brilliant - so much choice, good portions, and always tasty. My only criticism is sometimes food can take a while to come as everything is fresh and it's often busy for a small cafe, but it's always well worth waiting for.
R. S.
Found this place through Instagram and couldn’t have been more delighted when we finally visited! The food was delicious and staff were really friendly. Will definitely be coming back!
R. O.
Sorry its taken us 6 months to write this review! We used Piecebox to cater for our wedding in October and had a wonderful experience! Audrey was so great and thought of every little thing. The food was wonderful and guests raved about the lamb tagine ❤️ Would 100% recommend if you're planning a similar event!
Also this is a brilliant local cafe which serves great coffee and breakfast/lunch!
A. L.
I wish I had discovered this place before! In it I have tried the best vegan pancakes in the world! They have many vegan options for both breakfast and lunch. The decoration of the place makes it look like you are at home and makes it very cozy and the staff is very nice. Of course in my top10 of totally recommended sites in Edinburgh💚
R. P.
Lots of great vegan options. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly. Definitely recommend stopping in if you're staying nearby.
A. J.
Lovely place. Food never fails to impress. Serve you fruit infused water on arrival, speedy with orders and service. Staff are friendly and they allow dogs in. Really homey though a bit cramped, but this only adds to the effect. Always busy but we manage to get a table most times, great for vegan, veggie and gluten free and the smoothies are amazing. Definitely a favourite!

Piecebox does the best scrambled eggs I've ever had - absolutely perfect. I live locally and go here fairly regularly: it's a lovely place with a varied menu (tons of options to suit meat eaters, veggies, vegans and those with intolerances to gluten and dairy), brilliant staff and a cheerful atmosphere. You won't find somewhere else nearby as good as this for lunch.
H. D.
Great local café. Always busy. The food is tasty. The staff are friendly and attentive. The home made baking could seriously make you put on several lbs without even trying. There's always a GF & vegan option. Go & try it - you'll really like it.
H. B.
A very comforting cafe, with friendly staff and a somewhat boutique style, which was wonderful to see.
The food comes across as healthy and thought through. We ordered prawn and avacado, along with some square sasuage and scrambled eggs. The food overall was great and the portion size large, however the waiting time was almost half an hour. The food took so long we thought our order hadn't gone through...it had, but just took time.
The price for the avacado was about £9, which for the size seemed reasonable.
If I was in the area again I would certainly drop back in!
C.
Great dog friendly cafe. Very friendly staff who were accomodating to my dog and nice variety of dishes on the menu🙂
K. H.
Amazing sweet potato burger with delicious halloumi cheese. Only let down was the peanut butter milkshake which wasn’t as thick and cold as I expected, tasted more like a peanut punch, but delicious nonetheless!
w. t.
This is the best local restaurant I know. They do a wide range of food but I personally love their brunch and breakfast items and great coffee. The service is always amazing and they love dogs- even give them
a sausage cut up and water on arrival. They also do takeaway which we also love and great value. Highly recommend!! We have been going here for years!
K. W.
My Mum and I had lunch yesterday at the Piece Box. Our table was booked for 1pm, however we arrived much earlier, Audrey and her team were more than happy to accommodate us. The food was delicious and the service friendly and efficient. Will definitely return!
P. H.
Excellent breakfast. A lot of choice and something for everyone, vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters alike. The service and atmosphere was really good.
M. H.
Delicious brunch/lunch food, with the pancakes being a particular favourite! The very welcoming and cheerful staff, relaxed ambience, and the fact they are truly dog friendly for our pup combine to make it a lovely place to visit for a treat on Sunday mornings!
L. C.
Utterly amazing and fresh food, loads of options for people with allergies too! Seasonal menu changes to add variety. I love the very berry smoothie and delicious cakes.
L. C.
Great food, beautiful location, helpful staff, relaxed atmosphere; probably my favourite cafe in Edinburgh.
K. H. M.
For brunch we wanted to buy everything on the menu 🙈 most of all I loved the ambiance in this place and the interior. My eggs were really good but my friend’s eggs had way too much hollandaise sauce (next time I’d ask for it on the side). I also loved the option of adding grilled halloumi cheese 🤤
M. S.
Really tasty food, in a great setting and complemented by very friendly staff. Also very good covid safety measures. I will definitely return here.
G. A.
Amazing taste, lots of vegan/veggie options. Lovely staff and cozy atmosphere.
R. C.
Cute little corner cafe, excellent menu with heaps of vege and vegan options
Lovely staff and service
S. D.
Didn't go there for food but to help with the charity work they were doing to help the plight of Ukraine, but the smells coming from the kitchen mmmmm. Will definitely be going in for food next time in passing. The staff were brilliant and very polite, can't praise them enough. Steven from Castle Removals
C. G.
Unusual menu with reasonable prices. It is the sort of place you wouldn't go back to in a hurry although the service was efficient and friendly.
R. B.
Very nice French toast! Coffee could have been a little larger but overall a lovely place to get breakfast!
K. J.
An unpretentious cafe serving ex food both healthy and vegan at ridiculously cheap prices.
Dogs very welcome and loved with hugs, water and treats 🦮.
Staff very friendly and helpful too, it was fairly full when we arrived but service was not rushed and efficiently swift. One of Edinburgh’s hidden gems🤩.
C. D.
Wonderful cafe dog friendly and dogs are given a sausage and water. Fantastic home made cakes and scones and great service.
A. H.
Imaginative menu as well as breakfast and lunch classics, friendly staff, cosy atmosphere. Often bustling. Good food.
B. L.
Beautiful little cafe with unique, quirky tables, really friendly staff and a great menu selection. We only stopped for an afternoon cake and coffee/smoothie but we absolutely loved it. Can't wait to pop in for lunch one day 😊
J. D.
Menu includes lots of delicious vegan options! Friendly service, warm atmosphere and an all-around great place to have breakfast, brunch or lunch.
R. M.
Ordered the chicken nachos, hallumi fires and a cappuccino.
It didn't seem that busy, there were a few tables taken - but the food took about 45-50 mins to arrive. This wasn't an issue though, as I was catching up with a few friends so time went quite quick.
I thought the nachos were dry not very nice, ended up leaving quite a lot of them. Didn't see much salsa or guacamole. I can't remember there being any sour cream.
Cappuccino and hallumi fries were nice. Probably wouldn't go back.
A. J.
Amazing food, we always come back here. Great place to show visitors (when you can again) and such good options on the menu for whatever food restrictions you have! Their pancakes are to die for, their sourdough breads are amazing and the smoothies are the best. Fully recommend!
T. F.
Good selection of food. Good value for money. Plenty of vegan options. Presentation could be improved slightly.
K. S.
Lovely little cafe, great availability of gluten free and dairy free options. My pup was absolutely spoiled when we came in and they gave her a sausage 😊
l.
Excellent food, friendly staff, great service. Brilliant place.
A. M.
Lovely little place, had brunch there. The picture speaks for itself!
E. B.
Had the full English breakfast and the French toast with bacon and maple syrup
M. S.
Lovely neighbourhood spot featuring lots of vegan and vegetarian dishes. Friendly staff and a cozy ambiance make this one of our favourite lunch destinations.
R. S.
Edit: Just been for afternoon brunch and again superb staff and great C19 protocols. Highly recommend this great cafe.
Original review: Superb menu that is pleasantly different from everywhere else! Staff super friendly and great C19 precautions like hand cleaning sink at the entrance. Highly recommended.
Pics are the chicken satay club sandwich. Prawn and avacado bowl, halloumi fries and watermelon smoothie. All delicious!
J. B.
Lovely little gem of a cafe with vegan and gluten-free options and such a nice ambience. I love the shabby chic decor and how welcoming they are to doggies. I didn't have one myself, but the cakes looked amazing and I could see that everything was presented with a lot of care and attention. Really happy to have found this place.
S. A.
My wife and I enjoyed a fabulous lunch today. The menu and food was superb. We also felt very safe with all the measures that have been put in place during the Covid-19 pandemic. We look forward to returning before long. Very well done.
L.
I visited Piecebox for breakfast with a friend on entering there is a handwash basin with soap to wash your hands which is far nicer than alcohol gel. We both had the eggs royal and it was delicious. I don't drink caffeine and in most cafes they have decaf coffee but not tea so I was pleasantly surprised they have lose leaf black tea.
W. H.
Fantastic. Delicious food, a great selection of veggie and vegan stuff, too. Very generous portions.
Lovely staff, swift and efficient, friendly.
Great atmosphere, eclectic and funky music selection.
Found it by chance, and been back 4 times now, and I'll be sure to visit again on future trips to Edinburgh.
V. C.
Went in today and had a very nice coffee and superb milkshake! Great service too from the short young waitress who was very attentive and friendly! Highly recommend!
S. M.
Went here for breakfast with friends before Lockdown, I usually only put a review up if a place is exceptional and this place is that. Really efficient and fast service, superb food & juices. Every meal we had there was excellent and generous portion sizes too.
The sign of a good cafe/restaurant is consistency and as you can see by other reviews this cafe really is great.
E. J.
We had a lovely breakfast here on our last day in Edinburgh. I had never tried haggis or black pudding before, and the owner was shocked - so she brought some table side for us to try. It was fantastic, and I instantly regretted that A) I had not tried it sooner, and B) we hadn't made Piecebox our breakfast choice earlier in the trip - I would have loved to have eaten there again. Great food and even better company.
J. S.
Yummy🥰🥰just a wee visit for a couple of rolls take away
O. B.
outstanding breakfast, we went back for more eggs benedict and the full scottish breakfast! :)
E. S.
Gorgeous. Great service. Amazing Haggis. Bread was perfect on the Scottish breakfast. Best fry up I've had in a long while, and the place was absolutely bumping from open at 9am. Get there as soon as this places opens!
K. R.
My father and I spent a week in Edinburgh and came to this cafe almost every morning. The staff were always warm, helpful, and inviting. We loves getting to know them. The food was consistently excellent, no matter what we tried. The coffee was delicious- and a drinkable temperature right away, which is lovely. The decor is so eclectic and charming, it feels like a home kitchen and makes the whole experience a delight. I will absolutely return if I get back to Edinburgh!
K. H.
Amazing food! Smoothies and egg dishes were so good! Covid measures adhered to very well and they even had a hand wash station at the door! Dog friendly. We will be back!
J. L.
Fantastic charming cafe with lovely friendly staff and great food. The menu is extensive and very reasonably priced. I will be back!
N. D.
Lovely cafe with an extensive, tasty menu. Love their breakfasts and lunches. Got a great range for GF and vegan too. Really friendly staff too.
S. B.
Comfortable, charming and nicely placed just off the union canal. Equally good for brunch as for coffee and cake. My fruit scone was delicious, I've also had bacon and eggs which was equally tasty. Highly recommended.
d. c.
Great Earl Grey tea and amazing food, plus gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options abound, even dessert, and the staff are terrific. They're dog friendly, Too! We met a lovely Labradoodle (lab/poodle mix) at lunch today!
P. Z.
Sooooo lovely place! I went there with my dog. The Lady gave her a few pieces of sausages and water. Coffee was delicious, raspberry Brownie gorgeous. Very comfortable chairs. I definitely recommend!
E. P.
Really lovely cafe doing a great Sunday morning trade when I visited. Staff friendly, menu varied. Had eggs Florentine and French toast. Both of which were good, generous portions.
I. O.
Excellent breakfast and lunch menu, beautiful presentation, generous portions, quick service, friendly people, what's not to like? Can get very busy and you may have to queue a they don't take reservations. They serve a range of drinks including artisan beers, wine and spirits. They are child friendly, have high chairs. You may need help getting through the front door if you are a wheelchair user and it will be challenging to get to the bathroom as the tables are quite close together. There's at least one bathroom that includes baby changing facilities, but I'm not sure it's fully wheelchair accessible (hence 4 rather than 5 stars). But I'm sure that if you call in advance they will find a way to accommodate your needs.
J. H.
I love this place. Great for Sunday lunch, fab with kids. BYOB too which makes the price for a meal very good.
I have never been disappointed with the food, best veggie breakfast I have found for a while.
Staff are usually friendly, if a little rushed (but only because it is always busy)
Best to book ahead, especially if you want to sit in the hidden garden area (ssshhh)
Decor has gone from quirky to barmy in the time it has been open, they could do with cutting back a bit, but that would be my only complaint, which isn't bad.
S. M. H.
Very nice atmosphere and food is always good here. The children's waffles where perfect fit two hungry 3 year olds and both finished their plates. I had the eggs Florentine. Yum!
R.
Came in for some breakfast and found my new favourite local cafe! The coffee was hot and you could actually taste the vanilla in my latte unlike some places, and it was sweet enough that I didn't need to add any extra sugar as per usual. The full breakfast was very good and there was no problem substituting the black pudding and haggis for more sausage. Staff were very friendly and service was quick. I look forward to going back to try the creme brulee french toast!
A. A.
Food and customer service excellent, due to being busy food was slow to be brought to the table and as a thoughtful apology drinks and cake offered to us for free.
Which was appreciated, a great independent café.
S. S.
I love this place! I'd say go early on the weekends as it gets crowded very quick and they don't take reservations. Food is always on point, at a more than reasonable price. Staff always happy to help and very accommodating with buggies/strollers (even when they half of the cafe space). Baby changing facilities available too.
L. F.
Lovely breakfast with filled rolls and pancakes. Rolls a little past their best but that was probably due to the heat, don't worry we'll be back 👍
R. M.
Nice, small cafe. Usually pretty busy when I've visited with quite long waiting times for food so don't go if you're in a rush. However very tasty and worth it for a nice coffee, breakfast, lunch or brunch!
R.
I absolutely love this place - yes it can be busy but I have never had to wait long for a table, and the staff are extremely welcoming and friendly. Very easy to spend a couple of hours with all their wonderful selection of food, drinks and desserts. Love the quirky decor as well.
S. W.
Really lovely place! Great for brunch with lots of tasty options. Very dog friendly always providing you with a cut up sausage and water bowl for the pup.
G. C.
The best place in Edinburgh for breakfast!
J. P. (.
The best espresso I have ever had. It's also good idea to add some breakfast and smoothie to order. All delicious. The service is then cherry on top of the cake. Love it.
I. F.
Lovely little cafe. Had a very filling and tasty traditional Scottish breakfast here. Haggis, Lorne sausage alongside the usual trimmings: egg, bacon, beans, tomato, mushrooms and toast. Friendly staff.
K. I.
Perfect mix of vegetarian, vegan, meat dishes, amazing cakes, gluten free heaven and breakfast of champions. The staff are friendly and professional. Friendliest eatery in Edinburgh! Will definitely be back...
S. D.
One of my favourite places in Edinburgh to get brunch. It used to be just their cakes I looked fwd to but all the food is fantastic now :) make sure to arrive early if u want a table for lunch as it fills up fast.
M. M.
Every bite of our breakfasts and every item I saw come out of the kitchen was amazing. In terms of overall quality, this little out of the way restaurant is honestly one of the best I've ever been to anywhere in the world.
R. F. M.
Nice place for a coffee. However, the food was not brilliant. We had the vegetarian option which was good but could have been better if some of the items were not been overcooked.
C. X.
Such yummy dishes! And great service.
A.
Really lovely cafe. I love everything about it, the decor, the staff, the food, the coffee, the smoothies, all are up to high standards. The even have live music events which I'm looking fw to. If you're looking for brunch, this place comes highly recommended.
F.
AMAZING. This adorable wee cafe has beautiful mismatched decor and they permit dogs, so I love to come and have tea and scone with my poodle sitting next to me. One time, my granny complimented the staff on the excellent food, and they gave her a free cake! Love you Piecebox!
C.
I've beenhere a few times and always had great service and tasty food. They also over a student discount which is handy as well. Although it can often be very busy at weekends so might struggle to get a table
H. H. B.
Great food, friendly staff, social distancing and hygiene well observed and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Definitely recommend.
d. D.
Wonderful staff, teas, coffees and cakes. Even better: they are pet friendly and make a special fuss of visiting dogs. Good behaviour is rewarded with Sausages for the doggies!
E. B.
Amazing food, a good all rounder. Good vegan menu options also catered for. Homely atmosphere, brilliant service, everything's enjoyable.
G. W.
I've eaten here often. Always busy. Food is always good. Nice place, lovely staff. For me it's too expensive. £5 for a bowl of soup, I'd expect that in George St but not Polwarth.
M. W.
I like this place. Good quality food, great coffee. Homemade cake loaves with vegan alternatives. Food is fresh, tasty but not cheap. Worth it though.
S. P.
Excellent , very friendly ,food delicious , had a lovely lunch last Sunday with my daughter and her puppy Chip x
K. M. C.
Lovely service and we were able to purchase prosecco for my birthday.
Dog friendly too!
My only complaint was that my fritters were a bit scorched...
G. M.
Lovely food, attentive staff, nice relaxing Sunday morning vibe.
K. J.
I like this place. Been coming here a few years. It's getting expensive though (maybe because of Brexit?). Quality and portion sizes are a notch away from "cheap and cheerful", which I like, but at Bruntsfield prices.
It's still always busy from around noon onwards, because who can be bothered walking to Bruntsfield (or Loudon's in Fountainbridge) when they're hungry?
C. G. T.
Great customer service and lovely food with lots of options!
M. N.
Formerly an outstanding local eatery, Piece Box has unfortunately suffered a drop in quality since a change in ownership.
The consistency of service and high standards across the menu was previously a strength which lifted this attractive cafe/bistro above the fierce competition of the cafe scene in Bruntsfield. Sadly, over many visits, it's clear that you're as likely to find 'middle of the road' fare as higher quality samples. Over the past few weeks I've been served Eggs Benedict with no topping, tasteless omlettes and rubbery scrambled eggs.
However, it's not all doom and gloom. When first opening, the cafe gained much of its regular following from its vast array of home baked sweet treats, changing daily, often with exotic and interesting combinations of flavours and textures. French patisserie was a frequent attraction, along with a choices of baked cheesecakes and almost canape-style traybakes. Cakes still make up Piece Box's offerings, albeit more standard fare now. The loaf cakes are tasty and there are sometimes gluten free or vegan options. If you're looking to drop in mid afternoon for coffee and a fruit scone, then you're likely to have a wonderful time in the comfortable and homely setting. If you're after more, then you may or may not have as much success.
J. F.
Great food that caters to all dietary requirements. Dog friendly. Lovely milkshakes too! Thank you!
M. M.
Lovely food, lovely staff who made us all very welcome.
R. E.
Covid safe and excellent food.
Wrote a 5 star review 5 years ago, decided to update it as I'm very impressed with their covid mitigation.
There is a new sink by the door to wash your hands. Screens on tables, sanitiser coming back from the loos. Menus are wiped between uses. As are the tables and chairs. Plus there is a new ventilation system.
O. K.
The place is nice but really busy on the weekend mornings :). The food looks delicious but the full Scottish breakfast was disapoitment. So, if you go there try something else ;)
D. J.
Really cute and warm ambiance. Staff was really nice. And brunch and breakfast options are yummy.
A. C.
Lovely little spot in the back end of Napier. Offers student discount!
Food is good. I ordered a full fry and it had lovely presentation and flavour
S. L. (.
It's always pretty busy which means some people really like it.
Been a couple of times. It's nice enough but food is fairly mediocre and service is slightly unfriendly. Wouldn't actively avoid but when there are far nicer places in Bruntsfield would probably hit up other areas first.
Pricing is pretty good though and defo more reasonable than Bruntsfield.
D. B.
I love this place! The staff are amazing, the food is awesome and it has a really friendly atmosphere. They also sell the best chocolate brownies on the planet!
M. M.
Came in for breakfast. Lovely atmosphere, food was really nice (had the full vegan & sweet potato buns), will definitely be back!
R. K.
Fantastic cafe; reasonably priced, lovely interior and friendly staff. The food was top-notch, and it's dog friendly as well! Highly recommended.
I. M.
Great friendly service, welcoming homely atmosphere and decor, excellent food and really really good coffee, and reasonably priced too. Without a doubt one of my new favourite cafes in town.
r. j.
Excellent food, wonderfull vegan choices. Whenever I go in there I always feel welcome, all of the food or very hearty and filling.
The piecebox is the best.😍😍
P. Y.
Raspberry muffin the perfect combination of raspberryness and sweetness. Really lovely. First official latte after giving up for lent and was worth the wait.
P. G.
Lovely staff, and a great atmosphere. That's not it, cant forget the cakes, yummy!😃😃
C. M.
I was a big fan of Piecebox when it first opened for the kitschy decor, cheap food and friendly staff but it feels like things have gradually been changing for the worse over the last year. The food prices have increased, though there's nothing exciting or new to try on the menu and there are a couple of grumpy waitresses whose service is so bad that we're put off going in when we see that they're working. Hopefully things will improve because this could be a great local brunch spot again if they put the effort back in!
T. A.
Lovely, quirky little eaterie. Food was all fresh and a nice choice. Will return to sample their cakes. Would definately recommend a visit there!
A. B.
First visit and will definetly be back. Great menu, lovely staff and great value for money.

(Translated) During my travels it is difficult for me to go back to the same place twice, because I like to discover new places, but when you find the perfect breakfast, there is no point in going elsewhere. A delightful shabby chic style venue, with a lovely and helpful owner. The dishes are hearty and delicious, with typical Scottish recipes. Warmth, unique flavors, cheerfulness and average prices for the place. So if you want to try the best breakfast in Edinburgh, make a note of this place.
