Reviews of The City Cafe

No fuss, extremely hearty breakfast. Tasty food and cool retro American diner decor. Plenty on the menu for all to enjoy. There is no way you will leave this place hungry.

Do you want to join the king for breakfast? Well when you walk into The City Cafe you're greeted by a life size statue of him, which leads into a glitz of Americana. Posters and neon signs adorn the walls an a large dineresque bar runs along one side. Lots of booths dotted around as well. I went for the Scottish breakfast. What I got served was fit for the King. Sausage, bacon, eggs, haggis, black pudding, mushrooms toast and tattie scones. All cooked perfectly a great way to start the day before a day of exploration in Edinburgh. The staff were friendly and efficient and only add to the experience...all in all a great place for food .
D. V.
Amazing breakfast selection! Big portions and tasty food. Good vegan selection. Friendly staff. The Cafe is nicely themed and the decor is quite nice. Very spacious.
S. G.
Loved the food... all parties enjoyed it. And the staff were very friendly and lovely too can't fault them and do definitely recommend. It's one of the places we visit that we probably don't go enough!
C. J.
Great cafe, big menu, great Scottish breakfast. We ate here both mornings we were in Edinburgh, friendly staff, great coffee, but busy (so book a table!).
Four of us, all eating plus two hot drinks & cold drinks each was around £55-£60 I think. Would go again 👍🏴
S. H.
I love this place! Despite being themed like an American diner, I think this is one of the best Scottish breakfasts in Edinburgh... with black pudding, haggis, tatties scones and square sausage!
V. D.
First day in Edinburgh and we found this awesome little breakfast spot! All the food was great but my stand out favorite was the fried eggs as the flavors showed they where extremely fresh! Cappuccino was great as was the mimosa! It was all fantastic and a wonderful start to our trip! The atmosphere was also great full of Americana and flare feeling like a true American diner! If you want a good breakfast I highly suggest giving this place a shot!
J. B.
Very friendly staff, stylish decor and excellent music playing in the background. Just ordered some side dishes as a snack and they were very tasty. The haggis bonbons were delicious, wish they sold them in the supermarket. Would recommend if you want a cosy place for snacks, food, alcohol and coffees (which are a good size served in mugs!) and also have dogs as very dog friendly.
R. L.
Cute American diner, had a lovely brunch. Coffee was really good and the staff were super friendly and attentive.
D. C.
Staff were friendly upon arrival. Place looked unique and quirky. In the background there was a pool table. When we got there, unfortunately it was being used the entire time. Wasn't clear if there was a waiting process or not. I loved how attentive the staff were and without portraying as annoying. They timed intervals perfectly and tended to our every need. Food was great and there was a fairly decent selection. Only down side of the whole place was how warm it was. We were right beside the windows too as well as the front door remaining open aswell.

Came for our breakfast on the Saturday morning. Busy but staff where great & wasn't long to wait for food at all. We both had the full Scottish breakfast, which was delicious and chocolate bar milkshakes. Great food & great service, thanks 😊
j. r.
The food here is really good and it has a good look, but on a close look needs a bit of paint and a perk up.
The prices are quite high, £10 for a Scottish breakfast which is a lot of food but the coffee is £3:20 a cup which is Costa and Starbucks level and sadly this place doesn't deliver that ambiance. However it wouldn't take a lot to get there.
J. C.
Easily one of the best places to eat in Edinburgh. They serve all day every day and provide everything you could want from Breakfast to Lunch to cocktails. Great staff, wonderful atmospehere, good Gluten Free options and those with specific dietry requirements. Thoroughly reccomend a visit
P. S.
Fantastic Cafe. The Scottish breakfast is really good. Highly recommend. Staff are very friendly. Nice atmosphere too.
G. I.
Great American style diner. Friendly service, great breakfasts. Reasonably priced.
I. C.
Lovely place, highly recommend.
So much food to choose from and very friendly staff.
S. H.
Very accommodating to my partners allergy, lovely food and the staff were great. Only giving 4 stars as it’s not the most affordable place with a filled breakfast roll ranging up to £6.25 but that’s just a small gripe. Would definitely go there again
E. I.
The kind of comfort food that leaves you smiling and happy. Very friendly staff and comfortable seats. Clean toilets.
n.
Had an amazing full Scottish breakfast. All of the staff are very friendly and welcoming. 100% worth missing my train for!
M. C.
Great place for breakfast, generous portion and friendly environment. We really enjoyed our first Full Scottish.
j. m.
Friendly and happy staff. Tables cleared and cleaned quickly. Highly recommended the french toast with bacon and maple (flavoured) syrup. Will definitely go again next time I'm in Edinburgh.
A. G.
Great choice of food and great quality. Good service and nice atmosphere.
n. c.
Really nice pancakes and salmon, wish could go here more often!
R. G.
Good food, friendly service. Well priced.
A.
Best breakfast in Edinburgh, everything was outstanding especially the haggis and the kinder white Russian milkshake. Happily stuffed.
J. H.
First time trying vegan haggis and it was delicious! Great vegan breakfast but no vegan butter alternative butter was provided. Pancakes were nice, nothing hugely spectacular so probably wouldn't order those again.
M. H. (. H.
Searching for some traditional scottish breakfast? You are in the right place. I just love their scottish breakfast! It's big & tasty! Haggis was soo yum, rich & soft. Potato bread was just perfect & I should mention about their bacon! It was perfectly cook, soft juicy in the mean time crispy! With pint of juice large size of breakfast will cost around 15£ but It's worth it.
M.
Very cool vibe in here. The staff, food and music were all spot on.
T. S.
We had a full Scottish breakfast here and wasn't disappointed at all. The aesthetics of this cafe is outstanding. The staff were very kind to us as well!
S. D.
We went for breakfast yesterday. We've been to a lot of places for breakfast and this place is by far the best for a full cooked breakfast. I had the large version and was not disappointed. It was huge! Well cooked and just the right combination of components. S left completely stuffed and happy.
My wife had the eggs benedict and was extremely happy with hers. We will definately be coming back.
J. S.
Visited The City Cafe for breakfast, food very good (decent portions too), staff very friendly would recommend a visit
L. M.
I had the French toast with bacon and maple syrup with a side of scrambled egg and my partner had a full English. Had an amazing experience at this cafe and visited twice on our trip to Edinburgh. Food is absolutely delicious and hope to go back sometime in the near future!
C. M.
Friendly attentive staff, good portion sizes and tasty food and drinks. The decor is just brilliant. Arrive either early for breakfast or past 1200 for lunch to avoid the brunch crowds at weekends - it's a very popular choice! And rightly so!
S. M.
Cafe was nicely decorated and staff were friendly! My order was wrong twice, had to wait for a while and the food was bland. The nice staff took my meal off the bill however the breakfast was nothing special.
N. L.
Quick service, friendly staff and reasonably priced food. Props to Sarah and Andy for getting us fed and watered in good time for our show just next door at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre.
V. l.
I ate today #veggie delicious #breakfast
Staff so friendly, I waited my food ,not more 7 minutes
I was full all day after this breakfast🤩
It's worth its money
R. D.
Been before, pretty average. Order wrong, took ages to get the bill where 3 colleagues stood at end of bar (pool table end) chatting and laughing. Decided to go up and pay as waited too long, was then told we had to sit down to pay. Felt as though as supervisior was lacking on shift. Food wise, was ok. Always a good option in centre of old town.
t. e.
I just had to write a comment here to let you all know how wonderful the staff at this cafe are. I got locked out of my apartment, and decided to go in for a meal while I tried to figure it out. My server ( I unfortunately didn't get her name, but she had brown hair that was braided back ) chatted with me about my situation and while she brought me my drink and food asked me for updates. She was so lovely, and without knowing it, she helped me stay calm and logically figure out what to do. I think I arrived around 2PM and I stayed there until 5PM until the handyman came to unlock the door. The staff told me I could stay as long as I wanted until I got it figured out. What a lovely experience! I really recommend going here!
A. J.
Had the Scottish Breakfast ... Value for Money... Great place...
M.
Lovely place, straight away got confirmation I'm welcome to stay the fair few hours I wanted to. Pretty good food and it's a stylish spacy place with nice atmosphere. Excellent WiFi too and friendly service. Looking forward to drying the drinks too, some very promising milkshakes are available...
J. A.
Really nice breakfasts, ok coffee. I had to drop a star as the tea was rubbish. One bag in a pot, I waited until I'd finished my breakfast but it still wasn't brewed. Can't have dishwater tea with a fry up. Excellent sausages.
D. S.
Very busy at 11am on a Sunday, could only get a high seat but managed to move to a booth before food arrived. Service was friendly but slow, considering we only ordered breakfast rolls although they were impressive! See pics. Rolls were plentiful and hub enjoyed the hot chocolate. A good variety on the menu too.
J.
Had the Scottish breakfast plate here for £8 and it was absolutely delicious. The serving was very filling for 1 person. Egg was fried perfectly soft, toast crispy and buttered, fried but not greasy tomato and mushrooms, meaty sausage and bacon, and of course, delicious piece of haggis and black pudding. The interior is like an old fashioned American diner and food in general tends towards diner style.
E. S.
We were really impressed, we ordered our food and when it came my pal got a phone call from the hospital to say her father was ill.she had to go outside to take the call so did not get the chance to eat her meal, when i explained why it wasnt eaten the young blonde girl behind the counter offered her a fresh meal which i though was really kind, also the young waiter from inverness lovely too, service like this makes a place really special, would 100% recommend this cafe.
A. G.
Very busy place and nice atmosphere. Breakfasts served all day till 10pm which is quite handy. Food was great and they allow you to change upto 2 items on the breakfasts which is handy if you are a little bit fussy. Was really busy and we had 2 wait 15 mins for a table, was worth the wait. Normal breakfast(£8) and a coffe(£3) works out the same to get a large breakfast(£11) as you get a free coffe with a large, worth ordering the large for the extra food.
C. F.
Friendly, helpful staff and they seemed adequate in numbers. No waiting around for us away all. Very quick service. The food looked good, although we didn't order any supp can't comment on the taste or speed regarding the good. The menu had sufficient options, I think it would accommodate most people as far as finding something you'd like. Not sure about dietary requirements.
Good cocktails, the "classics" aren't on the cocktail menu, however on request, they can make the most common ones. They do non alcoholic drinks and coffee, even a cold coffee. Also coffee is available for takeaway in a disposable cup.
Spacious seating and comfortable booths too. Outdoor seating also available out the front. The outdoor seating is a smoking permitted area. Ashtray provided.
The inside decor was trendy, in my opinion, kind of like an American diner/ bar. The lighting was quite dark.
The toilet facilities were a let down, pretty run down and really looked disgusting. That's the only reason why I didn't give 5 stars.
I am unsure about disabled people's access to this bar/ diner? There's stairs upon entry and inside? I'd be inclined to say there's no disabled entrance, however I can't say with certainty.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself I'd definitely go back if I were in the area.

Last night in edinburgh, decided to come here for breakfast! Had the veggie breakfast & veggie burger as i wanted to try it and was not dissapointed! Such an amazing vibe and staff are so friendly, decided to come back for dinner and glad we did, food was absolutely incredible, massive portions and soo cheap (definately recommend if youre on a budget or just looking for a great atmosphere)! Please remember to tip your waiter😁 cannot wait to come back here if we get a chance to, thanks so much for such an amazing time and being so kind 😊

I'm really reluctant to give City such a low score. The staff were wonderful, and were worked off their feet when I visited. But they also allowed a group of people without masks to congregate right next to me, and very nearly push me out of my seat. I know from experience how difficult it is to try and get customers to adhere to any kind of sane distancing regulations, but this was particularly egregious. I should say that I came in at a particularly busy time, and was too socially anxious to say anything to the staff, but my larger point still stands: they need better distancing. The food was decent though, and served within a very good timeframe, given how busy they were when I was in.
In summary: get a booth, where you have some privacy, but definately try this place out if you're trying to get a meal on a busy night in town.
B. _.
American diner atmosphere. Rather cheap prices. Breakfast was alright but maybe too fat and greasy (we had bacon, sausage and fried egg rolls). Really nice waitress and the waiting was time okay (around 20minutes to get the breakfast). The coffee is really good which is even more surprising for an "American" diner. This is a good quality-price ratio.
A.
Cheap and cheerful diner! Really awesome food here, tried the veggie breakfast which was only £6.40 with student discount! Was a very big portion and really tasty! My friend ordered a milkshake which looked amazing!
Service was pretty good, they forgot a couple of things for our table but all in all friendly and welcoming.
e. t.
Amazing food, very tasty. Excellent service, despite being so busy the staff were lovely , friendly and helpful. Went twice in a row it was so good. Thank you.
R.
Vegan milkshakes were great and loved that they were pet friendly.
V. A.
Great atmosphere friendly staff and even better food my stake sandwich was out of this world be back soon!
R. G.
This place is fab! Loved the atmosphere and the staff were super friendly! The food portions are huge!! Mostly American themed food and all delicious! Very happy tummies and great value for money!
R. I.
Food was good, portions, staff were good they did however say they had a kids menu but they didnt, however the only charged half the price for what we ordered for the childrens which was good.
A. a. a.
Well needed Scottish style breakfast! Delicious and filling! Good price, friendly and accommodating staff
G. M.
Plenty of staff on today, service was great, short wait for table. Had soup and a sandwich. Soup was very tasty roasted tomato, served in a mug with a simple sandwich. £6.50, fair price. Others had great salad, burgers, all good.
P. H.
Amazing place to have coffee and Breakfast!!
Delicious taste and great service. Thank you!
h. 1.
Went here to see if I could have a tast of home on my trip ordered the French toast it was just eggs soaked bread that tasted sour; was dissapointed because as an amicana resteraunt I would have thought you were trying to replicate the food apperently not the waitress did not bring me the check after clearing the plates I had to walk up and find her.....just I guess a sad experiance.
C.
Great cosy place to have a coffee and something to eat. The coffee tasted really good and the waffles we ordered were fresh and sweet. Staff was friendly and looked after us.
G. M.
A gem of an American style Cafe with a retro vibe. The food is generous and well priced, the staff are always helpful and attentive. A good selection of drinks from the bar, with decadent milkshakes and cocktails also available. Very popular with all ages; definite favourite in the City. Also has a pool table and a genuine Wurlitzer jukebox.
L. J.
I had the vegetarian fajitas which cost £11, overpriced in my eyes. The wraps were dried out and crunchy. The veg was mostly onions so not very enjoyable and didn't have much spice. Missing good texture and was bearable but not amazing. I had a pint of diet coke (£3) which was really weak and not at all in the right proportions, watery. Not too bad for atmosphere or staff, but overpriced and the food wasn't good.
R. (.
If you only visit one place in Edinburgh, it has to be this! Great fun! Lots of cool, interesting and slightly mindbending stuff to see.
n. h.
Went here on a friend's recommendation and we weren't disappointed, lovely food and friendly staff
N. V. K.
Very nice american-style diner. We had a delicious Scottish breakfast with fried eggs, sausage, black pudding, beans in tomato sauce and bacon. Even the haggis tasted good! We accompanied our meal with a vanilla milkshake. We came back the next day to have the american vanilla pancakes with maple syrup, which tasted very nice as well.
S. E.
As we was visiting Scotland for the first time, this was a good rated place, we take a walk and arrived we was seated within 5 minutes, ordered food and drinks promptly, atmosphere ad service was good, from what I understand they were busy and short staffed, as we were sat a couple next to us had there food arrive, ate and left whilst we was still waiting for drinks, another couple arrived ordered drinks and food, and whilst still awaiting drinks which were only a hot chocolate and mint milkshake, there drinks arrived before ours, finally drinks arrived after 30minutes waiting, and an hour came and the couple next to us had there food arrive, I then decided to bring it up with the waitress that our food still hasn’t arrived and she mentioned there short staffed, yet the couple who ordered one breakfast the same as us both had ordered there’s roughly 20 minutes after us yet had there drinks and food arrive before us. I don’t like to complain but I just thought it could be a bit of an eye opener for staff to check ticket times to make sure it doesn’t happen to often, other then that it was nice food and friendly staff. 3 stars.
V. K.
Slow serving but the food was really good.
Higjly recommend.
J. C.
We sat in a booth...1950s music playing..had lunch of chicken salad sandwich and a tasty treat for pudding...brownie and ice-cream.. just decadent...lovely staff too
K. W.
This is well worth the five star rating as a breakfast place. Can't say on the rest of the food as we only visited for breakfast.
It was very popular and had a great diner buzz to it. Portions are of a good size and the food tastes great.
M. H.
Happy friendly service with a outstanding breakfast selection, highly recommended
A. M.
Lovely place, fantastic staff and gorgeous food
G. S.
Nice themed cafe/restuarant, favourable food prices, and good too. The toilets were closed that day. No explanation and e erybody had to use a unisex toilet. But hey that's life. We enjoyed the place.
R. R.
The best veggie haggis I've ever tasted. All the mushy foods contained separately. Brilliant breakfast, reasonably priced and friendly staff. We were able to sit outside and they brought water for the dog. It was a lovely, relaxed experience.
S. H.
I ate breakfast at the City Cafe at 9:30 am on Thursday 15 July. Not only was the Full Scottish Breakfast really tasty, hot and delicious, the 2 young ladies who were serving that morning were so well in tune with each other that it seemed they were performing an elaborate and well rehearsed dance!! They seemed to anticipate each of their needs. They were efficient, polite and professional despite being very busy. It was a joy to observe. ( not weird at all - I was just sitting in a place where I could see them and was alone!)
Note to management: one extra server on a morning would not go amiss!)
R. G.
American diner. Priced as expected. VERY BIG portions. Lovely staff. No frills dining. Would return.
J. H.
Delicious vegetarian chili full of veggies and came with both rice and tortilla chips. Returned the next day for the porridge. A lot of very tasty options for vegetarians!
S. D.
Great music, super friendly staff, delicious food & pet friendly. Need I say more? Yes, the Haggis Bon bons are scrumptious!!
D. H.
A very quirky place to visit.
The staff were lovely and the service was quick.
The food tasted nice.
I. B.
It was good it was my first time there had breakfast Scrambled eggs and Smoked Salmon it was really lovely the girls were lovely and friendly will go back.
D. H.
Amazing food. Reasonable price. Great service and love the decor. Will definitely be back again
l. A. G.
I Love the decoration of the place, American retro atmosphere. The staff was lovely and super friendly. Guys cocktails just for 6£. 😍 Niceee!! Right?
A. C.
One of the best pubs in the area. Not only does it have great decor and friendly staff but a good selection of drinks, great food menu (Inc all day breakfast) and - during the Fringe - a free festival venue. Couldn't manage to finish my breakfast, which says a lot for 6+ ft man.
a. f.
When ever my wife and I are in Edinburgh we always have breakfast here. We have been going to city cafe for over 19 years now and it’s always been consistent good. Great coffee great breakfasts and friendly staff.
Cannot recommend enough.
D. M.
Great staff and great place to eat and drink. On top of that it’s great value too.
J. S.
Fab! Great service, food and ambience. Wished we’d found it earlier in our stay as we’d definitely have gone back.
A. D.
Well priced, large meals and a big selection in an American diner, though the staff seemed very rushed and it took awhile to pay.
L. B. J.
Fairly priced and very good burger with a grilled beef patty and meaty smoked bacon
M. N.
Stopped here for breakfast, food wasn't amazing, neither were the shakes, but there wasn't anything bad about it. Staff didn't particularly seem bothered about customer service, barely speaking a word to anyone, whether they'd just walked in, were ready to order or pay.
Weird atmosphere with the staff standing around and chatting between themselves for the majority of the time we were there.
a. G.
Food was good, decor cool and staff friendly.
J. C.
We popped in on quiz night (Thursdays at 9pm) and had a great time. The piri piri chicken nachos are also a great choice, if you're having a hard time deciding.
B. H.
Atmosphere is good, food was pretty poor. Burnt muffin, packet hollandaise and hard Eggs...not quite the Eggs Benny I was expecting from an American Diner.
S. K.
Great service. Great atmosphere. Great food and drinks.
L. L.
Absolutely delicious breakfast and lovely staff.
S. W.
Great breakfast, red hot, quality ingredients and perfect size. Friendly staff and nice location.
j.
Fab little place. Went for breakfast twice here and was really nice. Also open for drinks of an evening, the boozy shakes are gorgeous. Reasonably priced.
D. H.
Yummy food, so polite and welcoming atmosphere from the staff.
Doggy friendly too 👍
F.
Nice selection of food and good vegitarian options.
K. B.
I always seem to end up here during any visit to Edinburgh. It’s central, big portions, nice service and ok pricing for a city. During the Fringe they put in free/pay as you like shows of good comics and there is always a nice buzz.
W. C.
An incredible place that feels like an instant portal to an American Diner. With a pleasant and caring stuff and with an endless refill of your coffee or tea which is a rare sight in Europe.
Though that I was risking by ordering a Scottish breakfast here. But I was wrong to have any doubts.
Big portion, good and quick.
A. R.
Really nice café, staff are very tentative band the food was cooked just right .. will go back
A. J.
Came here for a full Scottish fry-up and it was delicious. Everything described on the menu was on the plate, and it all arrived hot and in a reasonable time.
A. G.
Dog friendly,great vibe,top food.
C. C.
Feels like being in NYC! An incredible selection of different breakfast - the full one is just perfect, and the large vanilla pancakes stack is just what you need some weekends. A cup of good filter coffee, a newspaper, and that's your morning done!
M. A.
This cafe is so, underrated!
Because. These guys make the best vegetarian Scottish breakfast. The vegetarian Haggis is to die for. This meal brings you back to life.
They also make the loveliest strawberry milkshakes. All at a very reasonable price too. The customer service is outstanding.
Im just going to keep coming back.
C. L.
Typical American 60s fast food restaurant. The atmosphere was so real I was expecting the waitress to come and get our order in her rollers! Great burgers and Mexican dishes. Not being very clean was the only minus.
C. A.
Good little cafe. Clean, tidy, welcoming staff, good portion sizes, prices were spot on. No booking required which was great for us as we were on a day trip. Would definitely go back and recommend.
M. G.
Yummy American style food and drink in the centre of town, with pool and all sorts of events. Given its location reasonable pricing too. Great for lunch or to start a night out.
R. C.
If you want a coffee at midnight in Ed rather than alcohol swing by. Booze too of course, but a nice mixture
E. R.
Best cafe/restaurant on The Royal Mile. Massive portion sizes making it great value and mouthwatering milkshakes.
Bright and colour diner vibe which just gets more enjoyable and lively as the day goes on.
J. M.
More than what I expected! The food was tasty and the service warm and welcoming. This is a nice place to meet friends for drinks or cup of a coffee. No shortage of outlets for charging phone/computer too. Free wi-fi. Child and dog-friendly just like it says! Ed was a fan.
M. C.
Was recommended this place as dog friendly and it was. The staff were very friendly and the food and drinks were great.
J. h.
Absolutely THE best cafe in town, from food, service, staff and venue. We'll worth a visit.
V. M.
What an amazing place to eat. The food is spectacular and the staff are really lovely.
S. B.
The full Scottish breakfast will keep you going for a day and a half
K. S.
Fab food. Love the decor. We ate breakfast here and it was very busy. A popular little spot
T. G. (. G.
The lagerita is breakfast of champions! Keep doing your thing because you winning!
H. R.
Nice to have a vegan option but it was a bit bland. It needed a veggie sausage or two.
I. M.
Food was fantastic and choice on menu was huge and staff where great
J. T.
Was here on New Year's Eve. It is really good for brunch, there is a lot of choices and the staff is very welcoming.
A. B.
Great service and food. Went for brunch. Pancakes and waffles tasted good.
Tea took a little while to come and staff apologised and did not charge. This was a nice touch.
Would go again.
K.
Super friendly staff. Veggie brekafast a bit bland. During the weekend there's a line to get inside
H. L.
Oneof my favourite places in Edinburgh, i have been here soooo many times! A friend who now lives in Aus says she cant wait to come back and visit. Go enjoy the breakfast!
D. B. S.
Good food and you can enjoy karaoke party
G. S.
My favourite pub in Edinburgh. Bar staff are brilliant and always a pleasant place for a drink. Thoroughly recommend the nachos too!
N. S.
It's one of the best places in the city. Highly recommended
J. W.
This was a chance find and was a nice change for us! We really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the food and service was good it was a fabulous break from the norm 🙂
J. F.
My wife an I were visiting Edinburgh and needed a quick place for breakfast. We found The City Cafe to have great french toast with an interesting decor & music.
J. G.
Perfect breakfast spot for a stack of quality pancakes 👌 Service was a tad slow and one order was wrong but otherwise great

Classic Brittish breakfast, I almost finished the whole thing but the blood pudding, it was very good & filling, bet my cholesterol will be measured by astronauts and not doctors because it will be so high
recommend if you’re in Edinburgh and like American Diner feel, friendly staff and warm atmosphere, there are vegetarian options and lighter alternatives if you’re not into big breakfas
A. L.
Really funky American style diner in the heart of Edinburgh with great food, drink and cocktails. Highly recommend
N. K.
Fantastic veggie breakfast lots of variety and tasty. Staff very friendly and helpful even though it was busy.
L. C.
You can never go wrong with City Cafe. Known by club goers as the go to place for pre drinks , I've been going for many years and quality still grand. Great food, service and drinks. Lovely American themed atmosphere , includes a pool table! Great job guys
H. H.
The food is so good. Nice portion sizes that make you feel full. It's a bit expensive for an everyday spot but it's my go-to when looking for somewhere good but without a lot of faff. Staff are really nice, the social distancing was handled well and aesthetically it's quite cool to sit in the middle of Edinburgh in an American diner. Great place.
M. S.
Great American style diner. We went for breakfast and had a vegan feast which was perfect after a night on the whiskey. Friendly staff too.
R. T.
Realky nice meal butchers share plate very good as was burgers nice american style diner
J. G.
The pool table there is nice. Its just one pound each game. Haven't been there for the food but I tried their nachos and it was tasty.
J. S.
Great food, quirky diner feel milkshakes are ace
G. P.
Funky wee place. Decent cocktails but staff slower than a week in the jail
L. W.
What you expact a diner to be. Good variety of food and nice service.
M. M.
Great food and lovely guys serving you
L. D.
Nice food, good service as always
M. W.
Great fun decor, great breakfast! I had the French toast and bacon with maple syrup, and it was delicious ♥ servers were nice too.
V. B.
Went during the morning for a coffee and some breakfast. Everything was okay. Did what it said on the tin.
C. B.
Always enjoy a visit here when in Edinburgh. Friendly staff, cheerful despite always being busy. The french toast made with sourdough is my must have
T. m.
Great breakfast, the boozy shakes are worth it
A. B.
Great Scottish breakfast. Reasonable prices.
T. M.
Good waffles and americano. Interior was great, straight from '50s America. Service was okay.
V. G.
The staff were fantastic very friendly helpful and efficient- we could not fault it at all
J. M.
Good atmosphere, reasonable prices. Well cooked fresh food. Will be back.
A. A.
Retro vibes and friendly staff serving proper Diner classics.

Visited up from Newcastle upon Tyne with my son for breakfast during the Fringe Festival. The place had only been open roughly 30 minutes and it was already almost completely full. We did get one of the few tables still available and got our orders in, we were served our drinks quickly and our food wasn’t too far behind. Especially considering how busy it was.
My son ordered the pancake stack and fruit and I had the French toast and bacon. The prices were reasonable compared to the other cafes we were looking at. We were both very impressed with what we received. My two slices of French toast were very large, and moist with plenty of egg and the bacon was smokey and not salty. My sons pancakes were thick and he got strawberries, raspberries and blueberries for the fruit. Both came with a generous serving of syrup. By the time we were half way through our meal there was a queue of people out the door and I can see why, if all of this places dishes are as good as what we had it’s worth waiting in line for.
Next time we are in Edinburgh we will definitely come back. Thanks for a delicious meal.
M. P.
Nice service and food
Nice location
Reasonably priced
P. T.
A great spot for breakfast! 👌🏻
m. b.
Good food, nice theme and reasonable prices
P. F.
Great food, quick service. Ordered eggs benedict, it came quickly and was piping hot, it was delicious!
H. D.
The staff are amazing. The menu has gluten free options and just happens to be the place where I had the most amazing gluten free burger in my life 😋
W. P.
Excellent breakfast, full cooked was delicious. The pancakes which I ordered with bacon were outstanding! My only suggestion is that the syrup should be served on the side, the pancakes were drowning in syrup which was just a bit too much for me. Next time I will ask for it on the side, the food really hit the spot. Good service and the coffee was excellent too.
E. E.
Absolutely lovely place and even more wonderful staff.. food was delicious and came quickly after ordering. Would absolutely recommend stopping by here.♡☆
H. E.
Its not good food for the price, although it is alot of food. Its just confusing
L. “. R. W.
Absolutely loved it!! The hard shakes are delicious as is the chilli cheese fries. Portion sizes are huge! Would highly recommend going there <3
N. E.
good vibes, loved this place. Tasty breakfast.
J. K. H.
The food was delicious and friendly staff. Vegan options too. I had the vegan Mac and cheese. Yum!
S. B.
Look it was pretty good, but I'm a lactose intolerance person and they couldn't swap my cheese for a lactose free option hence 4 star
S. W.
A nice, informal and laid back venue to grab a bite to eat and a drink. A wide range of burgers, hot dogs and main dishes, and a great variety of cocktails
L. S.
Lunch here with my friend Tracy was delicious. The atmosphere of the realism amazing. Definitely a muct go to restaurant if you're in Edinburgh
S. B.
Came for breakfast, fast service great food
A. K.
Very cheap scottish breakfast. Very tasty also. Tried some milkshake also which was heavenly! Absolutely recommend!
C. M.
Cheap and cheerful meal. Good gluten free options.
L. C.
This place is perfectly located in the center of Edinburgh. No problems to get at table around lunch time. The service is good, many active waitresses who takes good care of you. The food is really good with reasonable prices, we ate here yesterday and decided to come back due to the great nachos. The music in the restaurant is great and not too loud. Would recommend!
D. F.
Personal explanation of guidelines and their preferred ways of getting around, made us feel very safe.
The food was amazing, as always and a proper mug of tea made it perfect.
Friendly staff were ever present.
J. C.
Brilliantly quickly cafe. Freezing cold day so was looking to escape into some warmth. I wasn't disappointed. Brilliant menu selection and I chose the pancakes. What's not to like about pancakes and a nice pint of lager. Really perked up my day. Staff were so friendly. Definitely go back again if I was in Edinburgh!
H. B.
Great all-day breakfast. Very friendly staff. Delicious comfort is hangover food.
J. G.
One of our favourite places, great menu, great staff and awesome cocktails.
M. A.
We was seated quickly, but took a while even though quiet to get a menu, but that was the only real problem. Food price especially for City centre is very reasonable. The food came hot, quick, tasty and in large portions and was served by polite staff. There's plenty of choice of both food and drink, and the cafe is clean. So if you like your food with a 50s style American feel I highly recommend it.
M. G.
Great place, food is amazing
L. V.
Nice place, the full breakfast was so good
S. T.
Great service and great food, offers GF menu 👍
J. L.
Wow . Eggs royal was best ever. Friendly place.
A. M.
Breakfasts are So good here. Only let down was filter coffee at £3 slightly pricey. Overall really good
A. D.
Been here from Canada 3 years in a row now! Great place for food and a cool atmosphere!
K. R.
Good service very good breakfast food good hygiene 👍
M. s.
Brilliant food and cocktails. Staff are excellent 👌
J. E.
I told the very friendly waiter we would leave a review and I forgot! His name was very short like Bri or something like that! I hope that helps! He was lovely food was great and even tho they had to eject a drunk guy they did it so professionally and swift, we didn't really notice the commotion. Very well done guys
M. P.
Great breakfast. The flat white was massive as well which was really good. They did get my food order wrong though making us late for a show which was slightly irritating, especially as we'd made it pretty clear that we needed to be done by a certain time and we had checked with them to see if we had enough time to order food. They also didn't seem particularly bad about it. But oh well. Would probably go again just without a time to be done by!
l. c.
Love this place really great food.
G. v. d. L.
Great American diner-inspired place that serves all-day breakfast. Staff were exceptionally friendly and chatty, food and drink were great. Seating was plentiful and very comfortable. Would definitely recommend!
h. h.
Really nice staff, they're very welcoming. Be brave and try the burger challenge. It certainly beat me.
C. D.
Always a good place for a quick bite before heading to a club etc
G. G.
Lovely food and great service. They should offer a smaller breakfast, there was too much food which was a bit wasteful but everything was good.
M. H.
Got to say its awesome 😀
Great choice for breakfast we both had the full Scottish, first day we had the small which was great and more than enough but the second day I had the large it comes with free tea or coffee only worked out 50p more all that for under a tenner and it was perfectly cooked.
American dinner with great atmosphere!
B. C.
This is a great place ! The atmosphere is so good and decoration is pretty funny and cool ! Just a detail, we went a morning but we've been waiting for an hour before taking our breakfast since they forgot us...! But they were kind and they gave us our meal immediately ! We came back in the evening to wait our bus taking hour, so actually we're not traumatized ! The cool thing is that there is some phone charging places at each tables !
C. G.
Great Americana style cafe. Good all day menu and great atmosphere at night where it has more of a bar feel. Service is normally fast and friendly. Recommend the pancakes and milkshake if you have a sweet tooth.
Y. M.
I honestly don't think I've ever had a bad time here. Always love the atmosphere. Not too pretentious. The kind of place that feels like it would be good working here just to be a part of it. Always Got good tunes playing and usually there just before we leave to go to the clubs. They serve up some decent food too. Never really issue with being served and wait time Is usually not long compared to other places. It's dope, keep it up. 5 years strong coming here.
D. W.
Highly recommended. Love it. Been going there since before most of the current staff were born....
N. P.
Really good food at affordable prices. Cocktails are awesome too.
I. S.
Cool little American themed diner tucked off the Royal Mile. Very friendly staff, great breakfast (pancakes and waffles were amazing, plus free tea refills!) at really good prices. Decor and music are top notch for a themed place, while not being totally over the top.
A. L.
We popped in to The City Cafe for breakfast on a Sunday morning. There was a slight wait for a table maybe 15 mins but not to long. The decor is akin to an American diner and the music was pleasant ( I tend to Shazam tracks).
Staff were friendly and the prices are very reasonable around £8 for a big breakfast which was cooked well and very tasty. Filter coffee provides free refills.
Would suggest if visiting at a weekend give yourself time to wait for food, it was very busy before 12pm and therefore factor in a wait if you have anything booked for afterwards.
R. B.
Very busy cafe bar just off the Royal Mile. Parking nearby is almost impossible and the street where it is located is cobbled, which make access for those with walking difficulties problematic.
Eclectic decor, with good atmosphere, but noisy at peak times. Very efficient, hardworking and pleasant staff, large and varied cafe style menu, of tasty, well cooked food, but in keeping with the rest of the eating establishmets in that general area, prices tend to be more expensive.
C. K.
Great food and great music! Cocktails were amazing
D. E.
Great service , great food and friendly staff
C. G.
Tasty mint choc chip milkshakes and crispy fries made for lovely date afternoon!
S. R. F.
Lovely lush vegan breakfast in a fabulous sitting area. A bit like the cafe the Fonz goes too. Staff lovely and friendly. Beer served too. But we had a pot of tea. Great that they had soya milk too. Will be back. Yummy!
B. B.
1950's American Dinner style restaurant. Great decor and music. The menu is huge, American and British food. They give you huge portions (very American) for decently cheap prices. They serve breakfast all day and have fabulous milkshakes with or without alcohol. They have a pool table in the back and a decent size bar.
R. R.
Enjoyable American Diner. An Edinburgh institution that has been here as long as I remember yet they still pay attention to detail. The ice-cream milkshakes, hand made burgers and dogs are excellent.
N. T.
Stopped by for breakfast before our train back on a Monday morning. Cafe was really quiet and were a little put off by it, but it was fantastic. Good service, the milkshakes and waffles were brilliant, and my partner managed to polish off the French toast with bacon. Left full to the brim and had to walk off a sugar rush and food baby before lunch! Would definitely go again!
R. L.
Found this American style diner near our hotel and it's an absolute gem. Stylishly decorated with authentic posters. Food is very generously offered. Lovely atmosphere. Had breakfast here during our 3 day stay. Gets very busy at the weekend.
C. T.
What a fantastic breakfast! I had scrammed eggs on toast with salmon, and my partner had a full cooked breakfast. Everything was made with care, real butter and full of flavour. The haggis and black pudding was tender, moist and full of flavour. We will be going back as their main meal selection looked great as well. Handy location, friendly staff and great quality food and prices.
C. W.
Nice place to hang around with friends and family. A nice classy bar with wide range of liquors. The staff is nice and friendly.
K. B.
Busy bar with authentic cafe decor upstairs. Quickly served at busy bar. Reasonable choice and price for a pint/drink. Downstairs was hosting events for Fringe unfortunately was full despite having tickets!?!? No reflection on Bar all was good. Friendly comfortable place.
S. D.
Great place to go If you've missed breakfast and still want some. Their full Scottish fry up is cooked how it should be as are the pancakes. Staff are friendly and chatty too :) Would definitely return here again!
B. K.
Friendly staff. Breakfast was decent
S. N.
Best breakfast in Edinburgh and very dog friendly too
M. B.
OK place for a young crowd. Reasonable menu available if you need a breakfast after a late evening
L. U. F.
Great breakfast, but the coffee not so much.
S.
Good value veggie breakfast. Staff was polite and helpful. Would recommend if in the area.
j. h.
Nice place abit different to your normal cafe the waffles looked excellent, will try before we leave
M. R.
love the place. 70's decoration. Good food. staff very friendly
R. O.
I absolutely love coming here for food. They do all day breakfast, which ranges from pancakes to eggs benedict to full Scottish to porridge... So many options! Burgers, sandwiches, nachos etc too. Really fun decor, good music, friendly staff - awesome place.
P. B. W.
Great American dinner in old Town Edinburgh
G. W.
Went for breakfast and it was excellent 👌 definitely recommend 😊 staff super friendly and helpful 😊
L. M.
Always our 1st port of call after landing in Edinburgh Good choice
G. S.
Great service and prices. The food is amazing.
D. S.
Both my partner and I enjoyed the chicken fajitas. However, constructing the fajitas was fiddly due to the excessive amount of ramakins/tupperware it all came in. This also left little space on the table for side orders.
Portion sizes were decent and Milkshakes tasted lovely!
Would recommend.
R. T.
Very tasty food and good service!
A. W.
Charming American Style diner in Edinburgh's Old Town.
Was greeted by the King of Rock and Roll on arrival. The food here was high quality, with really nice Sweet Potato Fries, and a Beef Hot Dog. The staff here were very friendly.
Would visit again.
K. G.
Went for breakfast at the weekend, really busy place but service was still on time. Good price for breakfast and plenty choice. Waitress was very friendly and attentive. Will be back to try dinner
A. R.
Loved it beautiful breakfast great interior and service brill will return 👍😊
B. D.
This is a really good cafe with good dependable food at very reasonable prices. The staff are great and the '50's American style diner decor makes for a lively setting. I've always had the large vegetarian full Scottish breakfast and it is definitely large and very good value for money.
S. O.
Staying at South Bridge we looked up nearby breakfast venues. Great location just off the Royal Mile - American diner style but with a Scottish twist. I loved my full breakfast with all the usuals plus haggis and tatty scone. Just delicious and such good value. Veggie options. Great staff and clean. A must!
R. J.
I always love going to City Cafe, whether for brunch, a milkshake, a cocktail or a big meal! Great food, friendly staff and a separate vegan menu with amazing vegan milkshakes, amongst other things! Very dog friendly too.
R. L. (.
This is how a cafe should be done! Great breakfast with very good prices, (especially going large with added tea or coffee). Well though out Vegan and Vegetarian options too. We'll definitely be back.
A. W.
Nice place with very good customer service. We appreciate that dogs are welcome. We loved vegetarian hotdogs.
G. U.
Great for unlimited cup of joe, or American diner inspired food anytime of the day. It's a bit of Iconic place for people of Edinburgh to go to. Not too many pool tables available in Edinburgh City Centre any more - good to see one still in use.
R. P.
Nice little cafe, very friendly staff and reasonable prices
R. P.
We all really enjoyed a fantastic little breakfast, set us all up for the day, friendly staff too.
M. h.
Best breakfast I've had!!
K.
Had a breakfast it was lovely did me all day . The staff were excellent, it was nice and clean a really nice place , will definitely visit again when we next come to Edinburgh
Y. C.
Great place for brunch! Food is good. Staff are friendly.
K. A.
A cool retro diner style cafe with a good selection of affordable cocktails.
Staff are friendly and chatty.
The milkshakes looked amazing but unfortunately did not have time to try one out but certainly will next time.
Plenty seating in the form of booths, tables and barstools.
Would be a good starting place for a night out.
P. R.
Lovely cafe, enjoyed food and drink
M. H.
Good vegan options, atmosphere and friendly staff
D. D.
This American diner is located on the royal mile and is just about there, as one. It has the same interiors with good service but not the exact type of food. The breakfast here is hearty and filling as is the milk shakes, but the mains and desserts aren't really up to the mark. I had the mac and cheese and was disappointed. Their burgers also are a bit dry for my liking. And this is from me going there multiple times. They have some beers on tap. It's a relaxed night out with friends for a quick bite but doesn't really tick all the boxes of being an american diner. Is mostly catering to tourists.
R. E.
We didn't eat here. We watched a show as part of the fringe festival. It was a great venue for a personal gig. Would definitely visit again if we were in Edinburgh again.
c. g.
Walked in this place and read the menu...initial thoughts were an American style bar from the 60s with usual hotdog and burger type fayre....I was doubtful but my eldest lad said the Google reviews were good so decided to try. In short it was a great decision the food was tasty and well priced. We saw a street entertainer from the royal mile walk in later...if it's good enough for locals. Would certainly return.
R. R.
Delicious breakfast & a fun atmosphere!
S. B.
The food and drink was fab and the staff were superb in this iconic Edinburgh café. It has great vintage character and atmosphere with cool jukebox playlists to boot. The older this place gets the more iconic and unique it will become. Keep up the good work.
M. M.
Great place, the staff work very hard to bring a positive experience to everyone who crosses the threshhold. Food is top notch and doesn't cost the earth.
The waitress with the tattoos has the most beautiful accent I have ever heard. Would return.
D. L.
We went twice during our stay and both times we were treated with some of the best of the customer service I've recieved in a long while
The food was exceptional and they have the most delicious thickshakes like you would find in American diners. 10/10
D. J.
Really nice American style diner! Went for brunch and the staff are really great and the food was excellent and well priced. It can get quite busy here so be prepared to wait
D. H.
Wonderful breakfast, great service, thankyou
S. K.
Friendly staff and good breakfast. The design is very atmospheric as well. You should try the Scottish breakfast for 9,5 £ with haggis and black pudding. It is a very big portion and has many types of the traditional Scottish breakfast :)
L. B.
Fantastic food - great service ! Highly recommend for a sugar fix breakfast
N. P.
Great coffee, fast service, friendly staff, and terrific location.
J.
Relaxed and chilled vibe - for a Saturday night it was full of people having a drink, chat and a good time rather than being lairy drunks. Great food as well and loved the service, thank you!
A. Z.
Great menu, great atmosphere, and warm & friendly staff. Our favourite place for brunch, lunch or a bite to eat and a few drinks in the evening.
M. B.
Excellent meeting point. Fine food, top beers, good music, fine service. Very competent personel. Cozy environment. Recomended for all tourists visiting Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.
N. S.
Big city cafe. Food was twice the price and half as good as the cafes at home. Looks good on the internet but thats where it ends. Service was good. Ok for basic food.
S. C.
Love this place - a must for every Edinburgh visit. Good honest food - burgers, fajitas, nachos. Great 60s decor with Elvis at the entrance. Loved the music too.
n. s.
We’ve had breakfast and Lunch here (on different days lol) and both were excellent! Lovely food and a great atmosphere, definitely recommend :)
k. H.
Fun atmosphere, large portions of delicious american food, and friendly staff. Reasonable prices. Good hours too. Open later than a lot of other places. Food served until 10pm. Definitely recommend!
T. C.
Nice place, good food and friendly staff. A bit more expensive than other places but very good
M. D.
Great breakfast but a fun place to go any time of day.
D. M.
I do like the City Cafe, so kitsch and cute! I like going in for breakfast and ordering a stack of pancakes, which are incredibly reasonably priced and very filling! Going in later on in the day is also a treat with their sharing platters being a particular highlight, add in a milkshake and your day is made!
D. H.
Great food, amazing friendly service and good prices. Large menu, I would highly recommended this restaurant. Thanks to the two young lads serving us on Tuesday nothing was a problem (even though we're were an awkward international group) and they checked on us a few times
R. A.
We had posh Mac and cheese, chilli cheese chips and chilli con carne. Service and food was fantastic 👍 large portions and an amazing brownie to finish. Well worth a visit.
M. E.
Fantastic Chilli Burger, huge steak chips and great onion rings with sweet chilli sauce. Also a fine selection of beers, all fairly reasonably priced and just off the royal mile. Loved it.
A. M.
Been coming here since the 90s. Cool place but food average. Service can be very hit and miss. Better cocktails and beer selection would be a nice improvement. Normally go to Bubba q instead now for the food and here for coffee catch ups.
J. M.
Excellent American diner style cafe with an excellent selection of draft and bottled beers and ciders as well as a very handsome range of cocktails and milkshakes.
The menu features diner classics including waffles and pancakes for all day breakfast items as well as burgers and hotdogs. Teas and coffees are done as standard as well as a selection of 'hardshakes' - alcoholic milkshake!
A. B.
A great 'full Scottish' and the boozy shakes are brilliant. My go to place for a big fry up when in Edinburgh. Healthy breakfasts are also available.
M. S.
Great breakfast, friendly staff in a lovely relaxed atmosphere 🙂
J. M.
Really lovely atmosphere, the staff was really friendly and the food was amazing
a. m.
Check the deal board out for cheap drinks lovely place for a pint
R. D.
The City Cafe lies about 50 yards away from the Royal Mile and is a pretty lively pub open throughout the day serving from breakfast to the early hours of the following morning. I like the seating outside during the Fringe festival to watch the world walk by from here. Pretty standard beers on offer and a wide range of spirits.
W. A.
A place that is both great for brunches and a great place to hand out for drinks in the evening. I used to live near City Cafe as a student and would often go there for food which was consistently high quality. Very lively 60s style diner decor that caters well for large groups.
S. A.
Lovely atmosphere in this funky centre of town pub. Super kid friendly :D
M. F.
Great American style diner/bar. Friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. They also allow dogs in which is a great bonus if travelling with your pet. Can be very busy in the evenings.
R. B.
Love City Cafe, spend many a night and morning after here!
Great food, the cooked breakfasts are fabby! Yummy burgers and I love the chilli. American diner style surroundings.
When its not the Festival, you can get pitchers of cocktails for £8 or pitchers of beer for £7. Total bargain.
D. C.
Well managed re distancing etc without being oppressive. Food as good as ever and staff (masked of course) very well informed and helpful. I'd give them a try.
M. P.
Hip and trendy, City Cafe does exactly what it claims to. The burgers are decent and the atmosphere is cool. I also had a birthday party here once in the downstairs function room and it was well-staffed and impressive. I have to say, I wouldn't spend a whole night drinking here though. I've always considered it to be more of a pitstop than a session bar.
T. C.
Great place. Authentic diner. Highly recommended
C. V.
Great diner,love the pancakes
W. B.
Been in here a few times now. Real nice laid back vibe about the place. Staff are friendly and quick to clear tables or bring orders over. Food is good and drinks aren't too expensive. Pool table up the back too. Worth stopping by.
L.
My husband and I went here and their burgers were okay. They delivered mine undercooked even though I was ginormously pregnant, so I had to send it back. They took it off the bill and gave me a whole new burger and fries which I thought was very nice. It's a nice enough place but we probably won't be going again because the food isn't worth the price.
L. M.
Great price for the location, great full breakfast and they were more than happy to substitute items for me. Great experience, would reccomend to anyone looking for breakfast in central Edinburgh
s. h.
Lovely cafe glad we found it!
A. R.
Tia Maria Hot chocolates are fab. They aren't on the drinks lost but they'll make it up for you. Hot dogs are tasty to. It looks like a 50a diner. Ideal if your looking for somewhere to eat on the Royal Mile.
J. C.
Don't get the "3 waffles" - you get 1 and a half. I could've cut it in half again and got "6 waffles"...bargain hey...
E. M.
Nice decoration. Good customer service. Affordable and delicious food.
B. M.
Foods amazing but it's expensive
F. A.
It’s City effing Cafe. What more needs to be said! Great food and cheap cocktails with lovely decor and a pool table, can’t wait to go back.
R. S.
Great table service and good food. The deluxe hotdog was tasty!
A. L.
Ok American style diner. We didn't eat but had tea and rested up for a while. Some ok beers on tap including super chilled Heineken which is rare these days! Apparently popular for its pancakes..
J. B.
Wow, fantastic food great value, freindly relaxed atmosphere. If you are looking for a breakfast to set you up for a day sightseeing this is the place. Only warning is that when they say large breakfast they are not kidding!
B. M.
Nice quick meal.
L. M.
North West England visiter.
Loved this place good food, friendly service. I visited here in the afternoon and again the following morning, relaxed and chilled atmosphere. Cafe/ American dinner/ bar/ local vibes.
T. B.
Great place, always has been a bit abstract but that's what makes it worth coming back. Staff have always been friendly and welcoming and despite Covid, they are still as friendly and welcoming.
M. v.
City Cafe is a cool hangout. jukebox, snooker tables, retro theme going all around, extremely affordable and basic menu. The breakfast is perhaps the best bet. If you have a crave for some cool tunes and milkshake, look no further. The food in general is ok, again, value is key here.
L. M.
A great place to visit day or night for drinks and food (or both). Its a good place to enjoy a bacon sandwich and a pot of tea with the paper or equally have pre drinks before a night out.
It is a relaxed venue and the staff friendly and accommodating. The decor is American diner style inspired and there are cosy booths and comfy seats along with a great music selection.
K. M.
I'm nostalgic about this place for a variety of reasons which is the only reason I can't bring myself to give it one star. I would if I could, believe me. Anyway I've never enjoyed a night out that ended up here, usually a part of crowds who don't actually live in Edinburgh; from Fife, but bless them they don't know any better. If you end up here for whatever reason, I offer my empathy - but if you have a choice and whether it's for a meal or for a drink or a night out, do please go elsewhere for your own sake.
T. P.
Had both breakfast and dinner recently. Good food, nothing spectacular. A big part of the dinner was forgotten on most recent visit, apologetic staff but no discount or freebies offered, so left a bit hungry & disappointed! But would still return. Bar prices reasonable, apart from the £4.90 Erdinger - be warned!
N. M.
This American themed cafe/bar just off the Royal Mile is a fun place to go.Whether you fancy a lazy afternoon of food and drinks, or if you're in the mood to party in the evening City Cafe is a good choice. The 50s style diner decor is cool. The ornamental juke box looks the part, sadly its just for show, but don't worry because the music is always great. The food is good, not ideal if you're on a diet because the burgers, mac n cheese, and sharing platters are hard to resist. Another gem at the City Cafe are the milkshakes, specifically the alcoholic milkshakes! A grown-up treat, that I would highly reccommend. Another notable mention goes to the cocktail pitchers for £8, tremendous value for money! City Cafe have a decent range of beers, spirits etc. Price wise, fairly standard prices for Edinburgh city centre.
R. M.
"City Caff" (as me and my mates call it) is an American diner-style restaurant/bar which does a mean breakfast along with a North American themed menu.
There are big booths to sit in inside, or if it is a nice day you can also sit at one of the two metal tales outside.
City is great for a quick and hearty bite to eat, whether you're recovering from a hangover or in the early stages of laying the groundwork for one.
The breakfast options are mostly standard fry-up fare, but are cooked well and piled high - it is my favourite place in Edinburgh for a fry-up. There are also morning roll options, too. If it's after 11am they'll also give you hair of the dog if you want it.
Lunch and Dinner options are decent, but not /quite/ as good as breakfast (I just love breakfast, I reckon) however they are not break the bank expensive either - nachos, burgers, hot dogs, chicken, etc. Just what you'd expect from and American diner serving up quick bites.

Great food. Veggie options are good, and if your up for it there's a burger challenge! Is usually a venue in the summer for the Fringe so if you are seeing a show there, i reccomend eating there first!

Good atmosphere, cool American diner vibe, really good food and portion size. However, the service wasn't top notch. Still, we didn't leave completely unsatisfied, we were happily full.

Siuated in a great place, near High Street and Bannermans Rock Club. Food amazing, had the all day breakfast and a bottomless cuppa joe. American style but cooked better than at a greasy spoon cafe. Service was really helpful: recommended to try milkshake cocktail, for £6.95, instead of just the norm. This is must for anyone who likes sugar and alcohol. Great to share. Could also get a £5 voucher on their website. Definitely going back the next time I go up there.

The food was absolutely amazing however the venue wasn't as excellent as the food and did let the city cafe down a bit. Overall I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a tasty American meal.

Best lentil soup I've ever had. Very friendly staff.

Went for an earlyish lunch here and it was pleasantly quiet. The waitress was helpful in explaing the menu and drinks on offer. The food was tasty and filling with a good portion size.

Food was delicious, the Biscoff and Bourban shake was surprisingly good as well.

Good food, really enjoyed the cafe. Slowish service due to children's party there, despite that we enjoyed it. Gluten free options were only a burger and chips.

Great food and service, on a side street just off the royal mile. Went for breakfast and a lunch over two days, defo recommend
L. T.
Great food, reasonable prices and quick service.
R. L.
Average food, friendly staff but won't return

Had a very nice lunch with my dog here, staff are very friendly and service is second to none, the dog even got offered a bowl of water. The music is 60's rock and is very fitting for the cafés theme.
M. A.
Great service and good food in an American diner themed cafe.
S. H.
Good food, music volume is perfect. Most places get it too loud or all from one speaker. Could eat chat and enjoy the music (3pm).

We ate a typical British breakfast. Both the service and the portion were fine and the place itself simple but I didn't mind it. It's a bit expensive though.

Brief - Take a group of 18-24 year olds from Glasgow to Edinburgh and make them appreciate the fine art of whisky...neat, no coke.
Hmmm...a tough call.
To make this experience a tad more palatable, giving them a solid meal of burger for lunch seemed in order. The City Cafe fit that bill in the best way. A hearty selection of burgers with huge home cut fries eased their burning throats and stomachs a treat. Apparently you may see a few of them back through to try your burger challenge...you have been warned.

The City Cafe is great fun with a 50s diner theme throughout, the space is split into booths, the bar looks straight out of Greese with the bar chrome shined up, a Wurlitzer juke box is at the front too and the venue downstairs is hire-only.
I went to the Elite event here and really enjoyed it so when we were caught in a sudden down pour on the Royal Mile this weekend we dashed in for some shelter. A couple of Bloody Mary's and we felt a lot better. They did have capers in which I wasn't overly keen on, the bacon vodka option was interesting and tasty plus the spice level and flavor were good too. We ordered nachos with chilli beef which were nice but not as good as good as they could have been. I think I will stick to the burgers next time though not the Ultimate burger challenge which I fear would be the end of me.

Great diner layout, the menu is exactly as it says and everything tastes amazing. Staff were very attentive and nice too. I really like it here, very fun!

Visited City Cafe a few times now and there’s a reason for that. Great food, great staff and great pricing. Also love the theming of the Americana 1950’s diner.
M. O.
This place is really nice and has a real authentic diner/cafe feel. Great old school music and good customer service. The food is good and decently priced for the portions you get!
B. S.
THE go-to place for all day breakfast and milkshakes. There is nothing bad on the menu. Always friendly reception even when packed out. Love this place!

Art deco inspired interior, popcorn, dance music, free wifi, lots of spirits (great choice of Rum), great value cocktail or beer pitchers and a happy crowd. This place is really popular for some pre club shandies and meeting friends.
The door staff are well managed, the regulars are friendly, the bar staff are pleasant and helpful and the vibe is the best in the area by a long shot. The food used to be better but is still good enough if you are looking for a quick bite while you are out and their breakfasts are very satisfying.
Super busy during the festival as its known to be a cool and quirky place. The only real draw back is that Blair Street doesn't get the sun in the afternoon and can be quite breezy so you can't really sit outside in the good weather. If you want to go to one of the big night clubs in the Old Town and you are looking for a good place to start your night then City Cafe would be my recommendation as its right across the road from Cabaret Voltaire, just down the Cowgate is Liquid Room and five mintues the other way takes you to the Bongo Club.

Food was good and the staff polite but just a tad too laid back. Great music and ambiance. I thoroughly reccomend. Priced well for location and quality
M. D.
Great street dining for affordable prices. Always great staff on call. Plenty to choose from. Burgers are my favourite. Another star for second floor seating. All good

Went in when it was very busy. Staff were very helpful and managed to get us some seats so we could eat at the bar. Very good burgers and really good selection of drinks.

Very nice place if you have low expectations and just looking for a place to get coffee. Loved their big mug cup of joe.
All day breakfast is the best

Love this place. Great music (if you're into all things underground) with DJ's at the weekend. Cheap pitcher cocktails, great food, great banter and all in the style of a 50's diner.
S. D.
Nice American style diner, affordable and good value with all-day breakfast. Had an excellent beer-battered scottish haddock (large fish, thin batter) with tasty self-made chips for lunch.
J. K.
Good range of lagers and a handful of craft beers. Well located just up from the Cowgate, and has plenty of seating and a couple of pool tables. Outdoor seating area too.

Enjoyed it, had a really nice breakfast and portion size was great. Could be doing with more tea though without having to order extra and a spoon with each cup would be good 👍
J. B.
Really great American style diner. Big portions, reasonably priced. Speedy service and the food was great too. Chocolate milkshake is amazing here too!
D. G.
An American diner, it does bellybusting food and has friendly staff with a great atmosphere. As for prices it's about average for Edinburgh.
J. C.
Fantastic Café. Dog friendly and the staff were great with my 2 German Shepherds.
Great Breakfast. Definitely visit again.
M. T.
Good place for lunch or small bites and drinks. Friendly staff

Long standing feature of central Edinburgh. American diner decor. Craft lagers and comfort food menu. Small outside area and basement bar too.
M. B.
Nice cafe, we only drunk 1 beer.
G. B.

Amazing dinner style bar restaurant. Good selection of ale and lagers and cocktails.the food is always good and the have a pool table so you can't go wrong

The Belgian waffles should be skipped. They'll warn you that the syrup is really sweet, but the problem is actually that the waffle mix contains two to three times the amount of sugar that it should. You could see the sugar in the waffles!
A. A.
Best Loaded Nachos I have ever had by far, Dog friendly to.
D. S.
Really nice breakfast and drinks!

A bit of a hidden gem in the centre of town, and it's perfect for a meal or just a drink. Vibe is cool and it has a relaxed atmosphere. Popular with a wide mix of people.
